Great food and amazing customer service! Personal favourites are the soft rolls, jam doughnuts, Venesse swirls and hot cross buns. Everything freshly made in the back. 1000 times better than any chain bakery! Will definitely be back when we are next in the area.

The best for bread and cakes bar none.i live a 40 min drive away but I make a regular trip to here to stock up with the delicious rolls and Bread for our freezer.very friendly service from the lovely ladies recommended 😋

A very nice little bakery on the high street. The minced beef and potato pasty was lovely and still warm. The sandwiches look very tasty too.

Mind blown with the rude staff in this bakery. like its hassle to serve you. Hope a Greg's opens near it then they wouldn't have the hassle of customers. Who would support a business run by people who have no respect for thier customers. Just found out a Greg's has opened in Halstead 😆😆😆 Goodluck!

Best freshly baked bread for miles

I ordered my sons 16th birthday cake from Humes and it looked and tasted fantastic - chocolate sponge with their favourite, Biscoff buttercream! Thank you ladies for a delicious cake.

Nice bread but the rest of the goods we bought was average cakes and doughnuts very dry.

Just want to thank you for our lovely anniversary cake. Looks too good to eat - but we did and the sponge was light and the lemon cream was lovely - not too sweet. Overall a really lovely cake.

I love this little bakery, excellent produce great staff all the girls are always cheerful. I highly recommend this bakers, I often go out of my way just to go there. Breads superb too all types.

These have not been on the Halstead high street since the 60s by accident. Great choice and always fresh and tasty.

If I wasn't of a diet I would be down there everyday. Fantastic selection, always fresh and the window presentation is always tempting. Personal favourite has to be the sausage roll.

Absolutely fantastic cake and afternoon tea for my daughters lockdown birthday. Judith was so helpful and accommodating in planning the special cake. My daughter is an Orla Keily fan and the cake was beyond our expectations. She was in her words “amazed”.The afternoon teas were apparently delicious. Why shop anywhere else when we have this on our doorstep.

I love Humes as it provides high quality bread and cakes every visit. The staff are friendly and helpful and they worked throughout lockdown despite the risks so we could continue to get our bread. They are a welcoming and much loved part of Halstead and I hope they will continue to bake for the town for many years to come.

Staff were OK not very warm welcome no friendly disabled access but I have to say that it's been the best carrot cake I've eaten in Essex and priced very well.

I have fond memories of Humes from my childhood and the service and quality hasn't changed over the year, still a great friendly welcome and same fantastic food. Recently ordered one of their new afternoon teas. Having tried .... A few of the others being offered locally during lockdown which have disappointing, Humes have maintained their standards and supplied us with a fantastic spread at a competitive price. Judith was very polite on the phone, asking if we had any dietary requirements and asked our preferences. The selection of food was fantastic with more than enough to go around. Honestly can not fault the service or the food. Fingers crossed they'll continue to offer this service.

Always great service, wonderful fresh bread, rolls,cakes, pies, filled rolls for lunches, soup in the winter. Offers gluten free produce too. It's no wonder they have been around for a long time. My kids love the gingerbread men and butterflies!

Very careless. Workers do not wear gloves or masks, the pastries and such are left out in the open where they are easily contaminated (not bagged up like in supermarkets), and the rude workers had the nerve to shame my father for getting close to the pastries in front of a customer. I used to go here frequently but since I saw how they behaved today and the fact that the workers would rather talk to regular customers and each other before serving me. Will not be coming back again.

Lady with glasses and curly hair. No greeting, no acknowledgement, too busy complaining to serve us, then continued to embarrass a family member in front of customers. Sorry, but at least 6 people from my family and friends won’t be coming back.

Called in here for a couple of sweet treats this morning as they are the only bakery open in town. As the member of staff was halfway through boxing them up she coughed half into her arm half into the air whilst still holding the uncovered cakes. I tried to convince myself that it was nothing but neither of the staff were wearing masks or gloves and by the time i had walked home I realised there was no way i could eat my cake or allow my pregnant wife to eat hers. I really think the staff should be wearing masks to protect their customers and keep germs of the food. The bin ate both cakes.

Quite pricey and in serious need of refurbishment, that said their products are very good.

All I can say is the bread is excellent, the pies are excellent and the cakes are excellent. And of course the service is also excellent. This shop is probably one of the best bakers in Essex if not the best. Hence a very worthy 5🌟 rating. Very highly recommend. 😀

When I first started work at 16, I used to be sent down by my employer to get everyone's food mid-morning, their rolls/bred is wonderful, a wide range of different types & pies/pasties, why is it when things taste so nice they are always fattening I still buy them. when we are working locally that is the shop we all head for.

Stopped for a quick snack. Bought sausage rolls and the meat content was awful. It was like eating sawdust. Will definitely not return. This used to be a very good family bakers..... very disappointed.

I must empathise that I didn’t actually visit Humes in person - but instead I attended a football game at the nearby football ground where Humes supply - and I had one of their steak pies, along with a meat pastie.Both very colourful, tasty. Sadly I’m from London so can’t get here recently - I wish I had a bakery like this near me? You know you wanna; Humes!!!5/5

We have been using these bakers for many years now. The product range is diverse & of the best quality. All of the staff are cheerful and efficient.I would not hesitate to recommend this particular bakery.

Came HERE on our way to Sudbury, and brought few cakes, for our girls-when later we get home to eat. Had the Ice fingers, then Jam Doughnuts, so much Jam in them, and sugar lovely, Icing was thick and buns soft and melting in your mouth. Loaf fresh bread, lovely and had a strong yeast smell. Tasted lovely in morning with toast and Marmite.

Absolutely great little bakery, have to get there early so that they don’t sell out of the best bits. The synthetic cream donuts are the best I have ever had, the jam donuts are amazing and the sausage rolls are my complete favourite. The staff are friendly and the prices are very reasonable, definitely recommend!

Halstead are extremely lucky to have such a fantastic, traditional bakery in their town! There sell lovely pasties, pies, homemade cake, bread - all at really good value. The bread is lovely and fresh and their cakes and sublime. I wish they had a bakery like this in Braintree,

The fare is always fresh and reliable. Excellent quality celebration cakes made to order and very good value for money.

Humes has consistently, over the years, provided Halstead with beautiful tasting bread, pies and cakes. Service is efficient and always cheery. There really is nothing better than having an independent baker in your town. The fact that it is family run is the icing on the cake!

The best thing about Halstead by a clear distance

Used to live in town and returned on a day visit, bread is still as good as it used to be, hard to find proper bakers these days, keep it up.

Picked up a birthday cake for 80 people on Saturday morning 15/7/17 looked great.!!! got some little iced cakes for the children at the party.!!! everyone said it was the best cake they had tasted, so moist.!!! the staff are so helpful and friendly.!!! everyone asked where we got the cake from of course well all told them, and recommend they all get there cakes from Hume's.!!! thank you all for the lovely cake.!!!

All I can say is at it's the best bread I have tasted really recommend fresh and tasty. The shop shuts half day as normally none left. Open during lunchtime as supplies sandwiches and delicious sausage rolls oh and also cakes

Queued up outside always a good sign had two cheese and tomatoe rolls made for my lunch. Very nice as always cakes looking nice in the window they won't be there long soon be eaten

I was bought up and lived in Halstead for many years, having a Hume's Pastie was one of the highlights, I still have one when I visit even now and they are still the same after all this time.

Based in Halstead on the Essex/Suffolk border Humes is an old fashioned bakers. The bread and cakes are of the highest quality and taste superb. The staff are great and always helpful. A very good reason for living here !!!
