Huis in Portsmouth

This was a great casual and homely restaurant experience, which is all too rare these days. The food and beers were all as hoped for, with friendly service. We will return...

We have been going to Huis for many years and have seen it refurbished with comfortable furnishings, but still maintaining its original family run appeal. What has changed since our last visit is that we were warmly greeted by an exceptionally personable young lady. Lauren led us to our booked table, took orders for drinks and on return took orders for food. She really made our day by being very helpful. very efficient, very interactive and had a great sense of humour. Truly a great asst. Everything about the occasion was perfect - great menu, great service, great food and lovely ambience. combined with a fantastic selection of Belgian beers. We really look forward to our next visit.

We brought our friends here on Saturday and they loved it as much as we do. The guys were welcoming, friendly and attentive. The food was amazing as usual and the choice of beers great. Portions are generous and so tasty our plates were clean by the time we finished. A great evening out in a relaxed and friendly place.

Delicious food and great selection of beers. The beef stew with stoemp was phenomenal and mussels were excellent too. Massive portions, especially the starters, which did mean one of us wasn't able to manage much of their main dish but they enjoyed it nonetheless. Definitely make sure you are hungry before you go :)

As ever the staff gave us a warm welcome. The atmosphere was great even at 3pm. The specials were all Oktoberfest related and finish on 17th October, we were so glad we caught it as the food was amazing. We shared the sausage sharer and the waffle. The waffles there compare really well to those you get in Belgium. The service is excellent, if you want time between courses they will just come back when you are ready, the food is delivered swiftly and is always a perfect temperature, although I would recommend leaving bitterballen a few minutes before biting down as the middles can be quite hot, but they are so delicious and hard to resist for long.

An excellent early evening dinner for husband’s birthday. Being half Belgian it was a treat for him to find, he really enjoyed everything. This quirky small Belgian cafe has great atmosphere and food. One highlight was the ceiling cartoon of Tintin and Snowy (a great fan). The food was very good and large portions. Especially enjoyed the Carbonnade de Boeuf. Service very helpful and friendly. Possibly they could have done with another pair of hands after 6pm as it was very busy. Recommend always book if eating. Allow time for car parking as in short supply and mostly street parking. NOT EVERYWHERE is free!! We will definitely return. 👍👍👍👍👍

This little restaurant in Southsea is a real gem and somewhere my husband and I have returned to time and time again since discovering it back in 2016. As a frequent visitor to Belgium/Netherlands this restaurant encapsulates the whole charm and aesthetic of bars we find on our travels. The staff are warm and inviting, very knowledgeable about the 100 or so beers on offer and are just present enough to make the visit enjoyable without being in your face. The food is amazing, the classic croques are out of this world, and the carbonades, meatballs and moules are fantastic, most dishes have a little twist to them with an added beer ingredients. If you can manage a starter and a main, as the portions aren't small, then treat yourself to a waffle, they are delicious. There is an ever changing specials board with fantastic dishes, and they cater for vegetarians too without offering boring alternatives. This restaurant is just far enough away from us that we haven't taken root there, but my husband wishes it was nearer. We have introduced so many of our friends here and they all love it as much as us. It's a good idea to book as this place is rightfully busy.

HUIS is a gem of a pub/restaurant that truly captures the essence of Belgium. Every time I visit, I feel like I'm coming home. The selection of Belgian beers is fantastic, and the food is equally authentic and delicious. The atmosphere is something special, with a touch of Belgian surrealism in the decor that adds a unique charm. Whether you're craving a taste of Belgium or just looking for a cozy place to relax, HUIS never disappoints. Highly recommended!

I visited Portsmouth a year ago and had a great meal at Huis. It was the first place I booked upon returning to Portsmouth and we weren't disappointed. This time we had onion soup, moules and pork belly which were all excellent. The cherry chocolate beer was my favourite drink and the service is friendly and efficient. Good value for money too.

My third visit, although my first solo. Hearty Belgian food, and a bewildering choice of Belgian beers, draught or bottled, to match. Superb alt-indie-rock soundtrack, chosen, not "curated". Small and convivial, by which I mean, be sure to book. DO NOT DRIVE – pointless! – travel by bus or train (it's a fair walk, from Fratton or Portsmouth). Bring a shopping bag, for carry-out from the beer wall.

The choices of both food and beers is fantastic. It is one of those places that you could stay and go thru the menu if possible. We will definitely be returning to try different combinations of their delicious food and drinks.

Absolutely fabulous place. In fact, one of my favourite places to eat now. Menu is amazing and the food is just exquisite. I had the meatballs first visit and the mussels 2nd visit - it is hard to describe how good the food was. The drinks menu is vast and if you like trying different beers and lagers you won’t be disappointed. Can’t believe it has taken us so long to try the place. It’s quite small but really quirky and the staff are really lovely. Already planning our next visit and can’t wait to take other family members. Brilliant. Thank you.

Loved this place! Massive selection of beers, great atmosphere, friendly and happy service but oh the moules-frites selection was a true find. Not sure how we managed the croquettes and the pork belly but the food was divine..... open all afternoon so we skipped breakfast and lunch to eat here late afternoon and it was buzzing!

We had previously visited the city but had not been able to get in so this time a booking was made well in advance. We are so glad we did! Not only were several people turned away ( it’s a small restaurant which was full all Saturday evening ) but our food was delicious. Across our party we sampled muscles and meat dishes and with the recommended Belgian beers to compliment the dishes the evening was superb . Service was friendly and prompt too. We would happily return !

I had lunch with friends who had been before and they raved about it. Well I must say it exceeded my expectations! It is a small venue but you don't feel particularly crammed in and the decor is simple and tasteful. The caged wall of all the different beers is impressive. I've never been to a restaurant with a bigger drinks menu than food. The menu is not vast but it is so difficult to choose as they all sound so good. I ordered the pork belly with stoemp and the smell was literally mouthwatering, I don't ever recall food make me feel like that. It was simply divine. The food is all cooked to order so don't expect fast service but it is sure worth the wait. The staff are lovely, there to help but not in your face which is always a bonus. I did try a pudding, I had the special which was Belgian Waffle with pistachio cream AND pistachio ice cream, simply divine! I cant wait to go back!

I loved it here, really unique. The staff were so nice and attentive, happy to recommend and talk about the drink offerings to guests. The drinks offering was insane, so many great Belgian beers including guest drafts and bottles which I assume regularly change. The food was great too, the kroketten were amazing, definitely recommend. Thoroughly enjoyed it and wish I lived in the area, as I would be a regular!

I'd never been in Huis before, despite working across the road, so was pleasantly surprised when it was booked for a birthday meal on my behalf. If I'd have known how good the food is here, I'd have been in ages ago! It is no exaggeration to say the Haloumi Rosti is one of the nicest plates of food I've ever had in my entire life, and I consider myself a foodie. The combinations of flavours were immense, the curried parsnip puree was perfection. In terms of attention to detail, flavours, originality and portion size, I don't think there's a restaurant in Portsmouth that beats Huis. Thank you, also, to the staff who were welcoming and polite, and who went above and beyond to correct a slight error in the order, even comping me a birthday beer despite rectifying the problem in five minutes max. Thank you Team Huis. You smashed it.

Having looked at TripAdvisor recommendations Huis came near the top and when we realised it was 5 minutes from where we were staying booked.Glad we did.I struggled with choosing as so much to like and then had to spend even more time looking at the beer choices. Food was excellent:a beef brisket burger with sweet potato rosti and pineapple for less than 9 quid, my son demolished his pork belly, the wife loved her mussels and my daughter thought her halloumi rosti was amazing. Interesting beer choices but both enjoyed the coconut beer and the banana beer.We finished with brownie in a waffle and rolled out the door 2 hours after entering. Great food, great staff. Can't recommend more highly.

We have frequented Huis for several years, a true gem of Southsea. We shared the french onion soup and 2 of the croquettes. For mains we had one funghi and one l’américain croque. All the food was generously portioned and delicious. Both good and drink are very reasonably priced, and the staff are welcoming and attentive. Couldn’t recommend more.

We visited this amazing restaurant on 24th August. It was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. We ate the Croque Americain, it was gorgeous, one of those meals you don’t want to end. The beers were fabulous as well as was the excellent service and atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant. My only complaint is that there isn’t a Huis where I live in Buckinghamshire.

Have visited many times both just to sample the many beers and to eat. Food and service were divine as usual and now consider this the best place to eat in Southsea now that Montparnasse has closed.

My boyfriend and I visited during August to commemorate two years since we went on a trip to Belgium. The beers were divine and just as good as when we were in Belgium (also loved the matching glasses to the beer brand) and the food was incredible. I had a baked camembert to start and the homemade garlic butter and onion chutney were to die for! My boyfriend had the special pulled pork buns which he absolutely loved and the smoked cheese sauce just elevated the whole dish. For mains, I had the halloumi rosti which was beautifully presented and the flavours complemented each other perfectly. My boyfriend had classic Moules Frites and said they were just as nice as the ones he had in Belgium, even if he struggled to get through them all! We could not be more pleased and it really made our Portsmouth trip extra special. So good for you to be so accommodating for vegetarians as that is hard to find sometimes! Cannot recommend enough.

After living in England for years finally found a place where we can exchange some Flemish/Dutch words and eat great Bitterballen. The service was very friendly and all the meals incredibly generous. The beer selection is very wide too. Highly recommend Huis!

Had dinner here with my Wife this evening. Food was so good I was contemplating divorce so I could marry the chef. The fantastic food was complimented by the great selection of beers and gin. Service was also brilliant.

I have being going to Huis every time I go out in Southsea for a few years now and the beer has always been outstanding with a vast amount of choice. I have been there for food a few times since last year and each time it has been incredible, beautifully presented and tastes out of this world. Service has also been very quick and friendly. Easily my favourite restaurant and I've been recommending it to anyone who will listen! This Saturday I had the duck breast and it was possibly the best duck I have ever had, I would also encourage anyone to get a waffle as they are definitely worth it if you can fit it in!

Wow. What a visit. Their food is top notch - the pork belly is stunning - my wife had the mussels and was very impressed. Good range of base level Belgian beers, and a strong craft mix. Would like to see some big name lambic but that’s picky of me. Quirky venue, nice staff, recommend

We visit HUIS often and were excited to be able to have some food and being along our dog. He has a brilliant time and enjoyed all the attention from staff. We had amazing food (Croque Monsieur is divine) and great beer. So nice to be able to go again :-)

Great service and lovely food - definitely worth a visit! Would have easily been 5 stars but on the day of our visit there was an unfortunate background 'white noise' coming from the fridges which was waiting to be fixed. Ignore that and it was a gem of a find with a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Thank you!

Came on a Saturday evening, must book as small quaint vibe and very popular! They had a cracking selection of Belgian beers, amazingly quirky glasses and the servers had good taste recommendations. The food was other level and the portion sizes big and hearty without being over-bearing! Can’t wait to visit again!

Having been a regular costumer (even enjoying deliveries during lockdown) for a while I can say I love Huis!The staff is really friendly and helpful and the food and beers great! Only sad note, I think they changed the bread used from Croques from a great and tasty sourdough to what tastes like supermarket bread (also super heavy to digest!).A real shame. I'll keep going to Huis but unfortunately I'm giving up on my favourite dish from the menu!

I absolutely love the croques at HUIS. Not only is the menu delicious, but it also has an amazing atmosphere and the staff goes above and beyond to provide guests with a delightful experience. Can't recommend enough!

Wide variety of Belgian beers and other alcoholic drinks. Generous portion of mussels, would definitely recommend sharing them with someone, along side with some small plates. Staff are friendly and efficient.

Very nice chilled out evening and meal. We went for petit modules, onion soup, belly pork and steak washed down with a decent bottle of bubbles didn't go for any of the great sounding deserts as we were full, all were excellent and great value for money. Will definitely be back next time we are in the are.

We love Belgian beer and always go to Belgian bars/ restaurants when we can. The staff were great. The food was just amazing. The tastiest meal I have had in a very long time. I bought some bottles to take home. We loved our evening in this bar, and will return when we are back in the area. Many thanks.

Me and my wife went to Huis on the 9/7/21 and had a lovely meal. We shared baked camenbert to start which had lovely bread, garlic butter and chutney, this was followed by our mains to which I had the weinersnitchel and my wife had the croque madame. My advice is simple.....go and eat there

I choose this place after reading reviews on Trip Advisor!! I was looking for somewhere a bit different and something with good atmosphere!! I’m glad I booked as they were turning people away at 7:00pm! We had the mezze platter to share and then I had red snapper and my husband had weinersnitzel. Both were excellent, big portions and creative! They have lots of Belgium beers available including an alcohol free one!! The 2 guys were attentive and served everyone quickly and efficiently!! It was a really good choice and totally recommend!!

We found a friendly, informal atmosphere at this Belgian bar/restaurant. We very much enjoyed the swordfish in lemon/caper sauce and meatballs with stoemp, which we’d describe as hearty meals, and the large chocolate waffles, but were too full to finish the latter unfortunately. They have a good range of beers to accompany the various dishes, which very much suited my husband, but, not being a beer drinker, I enjoyed the cider.We would certainly go there again on a return visit to Portsmouth.

A small restaurant that offered a warm welcome and large portions. We enjoyed a reasonable moules starter and a fine Belgian onion soup. Followed by a fine beef carbonnade with a westmalle tripel and a generous portion of belly pork accompanied by a not quite so much enjoyed apple beer. The inevitable waffle desert was also generous and crispy. Excellent value and efficient, helpful service.

Me and my parents visited today for a late Father’s Day and was blown away by the food, barely waited any time for each meal to come out and we had to get goody bag as the food was too good to waste! A quirky looking place this Belgian themed restaurant has a really unique character.We were served by a really attentive, friendly and helpful feller.The portions are a good size. The food is tasty, the beer is cold, and there's a smashing atmosphere.Thirty quid a head for starters, mains and two beers. Reasonable value.

Very friendly staff and attentive but discreet service - perfect - and as for the beers.. well, Belgian beer - ‘nuff said (And this is coming from the first Englishman to attain the BSB Diplôme (Belgian Office for the Service of Beer) pass with distinction, when it was first extended to include an English language version course in Belgium in 1997)

What an amazing place! I am a bit of a connoisseur of Belgian beers and ales so when I stumbled upon this place it was an absolute treat. Staff were very lovely and welcoming and seated us straight away. I ordered one of my favourite Belgian beers which is served in a special designated glass which I haven't been able to find anywhere. I asked the member of staff if they knew where I could possibly find such a glass ...He brought me a brand new glass over and just handed it to me. A great gesture. Very kind. Definitely going to be heading back here. Hopefully many many more times. Thank you all at Huis. Keep being great!

What can I say about Huis, it never disappoints! Hands down the best place to go in Portsmouth for food and fantastic beer. I think it’s fair we have become regulars and it’s become a permanent fixture in our diaries. The food is amazing particularly the specials and the veggie options. The service is great and as for the beer just wow, the number of options is astounding, appealing to every palate.I can thoroughly recommend it won’t disappoint!!
