This one shocked me as the restaurant looked so fancy. We were at The National theatre to see a play so decided to have a meal beforehand. They said it was only a fixed pre theatre menu til around 7pm (the time the show was starting). We had a friendly waiter, he seemed new, and restaurant was quiet when we entered so didn’t have to wait long for our meal. I went for the crab soup to start as I’m a huge fan of crab. Couldn’t eat it. It tasted more like a tomato-ie soup (not a fan of tomatoes at all). I took a few spoonfuls but really couldn’t eat it. A man who looked like he may have been the manager approached and asked how we were getting on with the starters. I was honest and said I couldn't eat the soup and he kindly replaced it for the beetroot starter. That was a lot nicer. My friend had another crab starter (£8 supplement) which I tasted and that was okay. We both had the fish cake for mains. 1 solitary, very dry fishcake which tasted more like a potato cake as it was a case of spot the fish. I found the sauce accompanying it really strange as well. And then there was the chips, how wrong can you go with chips? Very in this case - which you can probably see from looking at the photo. Didn’t want to complain again so just left them. We decided we didn’t want to face any further disappointment so we just stuck with the 2 courses. 2 x 2 course meals with a couple of sides (water, but no drinks) came to over £100 once service was added and we were both still very hungry. Very shocking for this type of establishment. Nice loos.

The food was simple but good. Service also good. The meal was grotesquely overpriced, with a heafty service charge added to the bill. You would be better served in the downstairs cafe, where you will receive better value for money.

Lasdun is an object lesson n the harsh truth that one duff dish can ruin a full meal’s consistently hard work. A pity, because it started so well. A bone dry martini with an olive savagely skewered on a steel pin, generous almonds and olives genuinely the size of a baby’s fist were followed by brownly intense crab soup and a simply salad of tomato, pickled walnuts and grated hard goat’s cheese. How could a pie of curd cheese and spinach for afters possibly go wrong? Well it could, and a lot, unfortunately. First, it was not a pie, but a sausage roll. Second, filled with the largest gloop of spinach (curd cheese invisible if present) prepared in such a way as to remind any spinach phobe exactly why they disliked the stuff. A pity, as the fish cake had perfectly prepared spinach- why do something so badly when you can do it well? Puds were OK, unfortunately not sufficient to redeem. A pity.

I was meeting an old colleague and friend for lunch and was looking for somewhere close to Waterloo. Lasdun for lunch seemed perfect. Everything started well. Excellent bar service from Milo who recommended English bubbles to start and we then followed on with another English white from the Davenport vineyard that was reminiscent of a good Alberino. It worked really well with a pre-starter of Anchovies and oil when combined with the most amazing home baked crusty bread. We were then on to the smoked eel which was just a perfect starter, so full of complex flavours and textures that you just have to try this dish to appreciate it. Truly Michelin star stuff! By this stage it was starting to get a bit warm in this strangely luxurious but brutalist restaurant. Milo again pulled out a great recommendation - a light fruity French Pinot Noir to run alongside a rib eye steak and lamb with barley. By now the temperature was hot and really uncomfortable. My colleague loved his perfectly cooked steak and my lamb was tender and tasty. The chips were amazing as were the dressed greens. But eating was now uncomfortable due to the temperature. And the conversation forced as we were both suffering - taking the edge off enjoying the wine too! Although we had intended to stay for deserts and the blackcurrant "soft scoop" Mr Whippy style ice cream was really tempting, we bailed out to an air conditioned bar close to Waterloo in order to finish our lunchtime. I know it was a hot day but please, with a great lunch menu, a unique interior, excellent cooking and great service, surely a bit more air con is essential if not required from a H&S viewpoint? I had hoped for a memorable lunch as I had heard great things about Lasdun's but I can only say.......... don't try lunch on a hot day - maybe stick to dinner or a November lunch booking!

The limited and uncreative menu was surpassed in poor quality by the inedible dishes being flung out of whatever passes for a kitchen. Many food trucks are vastly better. We booked afternoon tea in this restaurant, I can honestly say it was the worst afternoon tea we have ever had, absolutely disgusting, two small sandwiches each, white bread one was dry, the other sandwich filled with grated carrot!!!! Supposedly with hummus which I couldn’t taste.Stromboli that was also very dry and a piece of pork pie all garnished with wilting greenery! Angel cake that was flavourless, a macaroon that was filled with a disgusting grey substance and a scone that resembled a dough ball, finished with the same wilting greenery, not sure I’ve ever had cakes garnished with salad before!! All for the cost of £59, I cannot say how disappointed we were

Now out-of-towners, we come up to London for matinees at the National, and lunch beforehand at House. This place is more than excellent. Welcoming, efficient (as they must be, everyone eating has a deadline to be in their theatre seat) and the food is inventive and absolutely delicious. I had smoked duck with red cabbage (it was the red cabbage that put The Other Half off that dish, but when he tasted mine he had a re-think) with a puree that would give even red cabbage a good name. I then had cod, perfectly cooked, with a clam or two and a delicious sauce and wonderful mash. TOH had sea food or fish pasta dumplings of some sort, they too were delicious, and the cod too. He had a pudding which he loved, and I had cheese. It was truly lovely, and reasonably priced. Thanks to all at House.

A pleasant and relaxed restaurant atmosphere. We settled for a quick lunch prior to the theatre. I had two starters and my husband had the set lunch menu which he stated was very good. He had smoked duck breast, beetroot and fig, followed by cod with clams and mash and I had an excellent Grilled prawns, cabbage and peanut ice cream, very clever in sense of flavours and fun. The second dish was Portland crab dumplings in a bisque, delicious. We didn't have time for a pudding.

We have eaten several times at House on our visits to the National; the set menu is such good value. On Saturday, before the matinee performance of Master Harold & the Boys (highly recommended) we had a very enjoyable lunch. Starters of smoked duck breast (my wife) and corn & cep chowder, followed by 'superb' lamb rump (rare accolade from Mrs T for meat) and cod & clams, with chocolate mousse and Colton Basset to finish. Drinks all reasonably priced too. We had a quiet table overlooking the foyer and the river and were very well looked after by Faye, our waitress. I would suggest giving it a try as it's very reasonably priced for such high quality.

I'm vegan and a fussy eater but the options were good. In fact this is the best vegan food I've had ever. Cucumber and avocado soup with roasted tomatoes, cucumber and watercress garnish, vegan cheese cannelloni with spirulina - a crispy kind of seaweed(?) delicious; and a coconut vegan meringue with poached pear and berries. Fabulous. I'd eat here again and again. My only regret is that it was so good I ate too quick and didn't savour it enough! My carnivore partner enjoyed his food too.

Attention - talented chef(s) at work! This is a remarkable restaurant where every dish feels like a labour of love, and every meal is a voyage of discovery. The cuisine is refined and creative without ever being pretentious. On our recent visit, we had the fixed-price menu (incredible value at £28.50) and started with Ox-cheek pastrami. The pastrami itself was absolutely delicious, and was accompanied (as always seems to be the case in this restaurant) by a variety of flavours and textures (celeriac, beer mustard, wild garlic, smoked yolk...) that kept the taste-buds humming and guessing - an absolute treat. We followed with lamb t-bone, cooked to pink perfection, accompanied by beets, saffron mash and herb juice - again, your palate is on maximum alert to the festival of surprises. For dessert, I had cheesecake mousse with strawberries and basil sorbet - so subtle, fresh, light and full of interesting contrasts. My friend had chocolate mousse (like none he'd ever had before), hazelnut cake and espresso ice-cream - of course I stole a few bites and swooned. The whole meal is perfectly proportioned, nothing is heavy, the overall impression is of healthy, balanced food cooked by talented people who care about what they do. Hats off also for the service, efficient without any stiffness, so pleasant and friendly. We have only one - well, two - words : thank you!

Service is always cheery, confident and competent. This time we did not have the set menu, but went with a fish and beetroot starter (The Other Half was obliged to them for not sullying his with beetroot, in his view the food of the devil). And for main, rabbit. Rabbit confit, rabbit pastry, just rabbit. Pure heaven. I love rabbit, I cook rabbit a fair bit at home, but this was the best rabbit dish ever. It would be wrong, wouldn't it, to go to the National for the rabbit dish rather than for the play? Wouldn't it?

Went to "house" before a show. Greeted warmly and that continued throughout our meal. The menu was intriguing but I made bad choices: the crab dumpling with bisque was a tepid, over decorated disaster. The lamb Tbone afforded 3 mouthfuls of meat and the saffron mash was stone cold. The other half did far better with cured fish of some sort which was reported as being delicious....it looked it too. This was followed by rabbit which was beautifully presented and went down a storm. We had a side of triple cooked chips which were to die for......I spent the first 10 minutes of the performance mentally working out how many portions of chips I could have had instead of what I had ordered. The waiter asked how everything was and being British I said "lovely". I never like to ruin a meal by complaining as half of us was well fed, but not me!

We dined after a matinee so no rush for curtain up for us. Unusually for us we choose dishes from the 2 or 3 course set menu sorely tempted though we were by other dishes on the full a la carte. The menu is of the sort where each dish is a list of nouns so little to guide you as to how the named ingredients will appear on the late - the wait staff will give you a description and tips on whether a side dish will add to your experience. We had the ox-cheek pastrami and the smoked mackerel for starters and the flavours were fantastic. We chose a bottle of pinot grigio from the special featured producers menu and it was as unusual and enjoyable as it was described - sometimes it pays off to order what intrigues you and beyond your usual comfort zone. For mains it was the hake with a sweet potato broth and leeks. Surprisingly it was the leeks that had the sweetest taste and paired least well with the hake, the sweet potato worked well. We had ordered chips as a side and the salty potato worked well to counterblance the sweetness of the leeks and rebalance the dish. Colston Bassett cheese and Bread and Butter pudding completed the meal. Overall a resounding success. We'll be back soon. Thanks to Wesley for great service and to the kitchen for well presented dishes.

4 of us ate here post theatre but I use the term ate somewhat loosely. Whether the food had been maturing from pre theatre dining or whether it was of poor quality from the outset I cannot say. The ox cheek pastrami was dry with unidentifiable vegetables; the goats cheese brûlée was an inedible serving of cold fat; the turbot was served on the bone overwhelmed by julienne pickled celeriac; and the mallard was dry with more unidentified vegetable matter. I was warned about shot but it seemed more likely it had died from old age. My advice would be to give this restaurant a miss.

As the gentleman sat in the table next to me put it, the restaurant could easily get away with serving whatever as people would come anyway. But they don't serve whatever. It was my third visit since the NT restaurant reopened as House, and each time I was amazed how good the food is - this time was no different. I dined alone, service was sleek and discreet and made me feel at ease despite being late for my reservation and having only an hour before the preformance. The cured mackerel was a delight, very palatable with a silky and creamy mash and gentle textures of beets. Cod was cooked to perfection, its melt in the mouth flesh flaky and skin crispy, balancing beautifully with a squash puree, romanesco and a sprinkling of toasted pumpkin seeds for a bit of crunch. Have a go pre show or as a standalone experience if you fancy clever seasonal cooking at reasonable prices. A lot of places in London get away with higher prices and charging you more for it. We have now been many times since our last review which was very complimentary. We have sampled the menu fairly widely. Any form of roasted fish has been a delight but you need not hesitate either if you prefer a heavier meat dish and then go sit in a theatre for a couple of hours. It always turns out, somehow, to be light - on everything but flavour. This review was prompted by the chilled Melon and Coconut soup. There are a number of subtle flavours vying for attention. It is an accomplished dish of high order! Well done. I look forward to the next time. One small matter is that I will ask for plain butter next time as I am just not a fan of the smoky variation on offer. A great team in this kitchen and as well as out front providing brisk and friendly service.

Great pre-theatre option. Very friendly service and as you'd expect they are very aware of people looking to get to the various shows on and make a real effort to ensure you get finished in good time. We dined on the set menu and it had a few good options and was great value.

We came here for dinner before seeing Follies. It got quite busy here but service was good. Waiter was friendly and attentive. Set menu is good value and good selection. Food came out quickly which is good as pre-theatre. We enjoyed all our food and cocktails. It was good to eat here then just go across to the theatre. Saves dashing about too much. Nice restaurant. Would come again.

Initially when we arrived all seemed good. The cafe itself looked historic and a bit eccentric, but that wasn't a bad thing, and the cost of the food seemed reasonable as well. The three of us took a seat, had a look at the menu and began to choose what we wanted to order. After about 5-10 mins we'd pretty much decided and then waited to be seen to by a member of staff. We noticed a waitress cleaning tables behind us and assumed that once she'd done that she'd come to us, as the other customers had already been seen to. No such luck. In fact I'm not even sure if she acknowledged us, walking straight past us and continuing to wipe other tables. We waited a little longer hoping she would come over and notice the open menus and lack of food and drink on our table, but the jaycloth was more important. Tired of being ignored, we walked out and left the 1930's time capsule hungry and frustrated.

Normally really impressed with service and value in Wetherspoons pubs, however, this was an exception. We ordered 2 pizzas and waited over 30 minutes for our food to arrive (usually Wetherspoons are really quick). When it did arrive, it was plonked in front of us with only a knife each, I realise lots of people eat pizza with their hands (as do I on occasions) however, it was quite a sloppy one, so we asked if we could please have forks. The server rolled her eyes and said she’d she what she could do, but it would be at least 10 minutes. To bring 2 forks??! After 10 mins we asked another bartender, who was polite, but could only give us 1 fork to share, as the others were being washed! Good job I hadn’t ordered a full English with beans. At the end I commented to a third bartender that we had only had 1 fork, only to receive another eye roll and sarcastic “sorry”. The pizza and drinks tasted good and were good value.
