Our first visit today ( 28/07/24 ). It's a 50 minute drive from home, but we'd heard good reviews and wanted to see for ourselves. We weren't disappointed. The staff and owners were lovely. Sunday lunch was delicious. Lots of choice. Great value for money. We couldn't manage desert. We will be planning a return visit.

What a great place, food was excellent, staff were friendly and helpful. We booked to go back on Sunday for the roast dinner. If it's as good as last nights meal, I'll be in heaven. Well worth the drive out. Went for Sunday dinner 30/6/24, the lamb dinner we had was excellent tender melt in the mouth meat vegetables cooked to perfection as were the roasties, yorkie and stuffing. The portions were more than enough we left feeling comfortably full. Thank you. we shall be back again.

Arrived for Sunday lunch today. Four of us had the platter, which was extra meat and loads of it, all cooked to perfection. The staff were very friendly and could not do enough to make it a memorable dining experience. Will be back !!! Again and again Highly recommended. Thanks from all of us. Need a nap now!!

Visited for Father’s Day, had calamari and the Stilton mushrooms on sourdough toast for starters absolutely delicious. The Sunday lunch was the best we’ve ever had!! Meat perfect, proper roasties, cauliflower cheese, greens, lashings of gravy, if you haven’t been since it’s changed hands I urge you to go, you won’t be disappointed. The service was also amazing, served efficiently with a smile, left a well deserved tip. We will be returning very soon.

Top notch country pub with friendly staff and great food. I had the sirloin steak which was tender and juicy with chips and a side of green veg which I think was mixed and tossed in a buttery glaze which was delicious. Look out for the house beer too!

Cold could have done with the fire on ,beer (bass) lovely pint ,bar person lovely.

We have seen mixed reviews about the food and service, but I've got to say our Sunday lunch today was absolutely beautiful, one of the best roast out I've ever eaten. The staff, especially Julie were welcoming and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The food was so good, I didn't pick my pint up throughout the meal. Well done all at the jockey and we will definitely be returning.

Went for Sunday lunch today at this lovely country pub. As always the food was impeccable and seems to get better each time we go. The portions were huge, so much so that only one of us out of a party of seven was able to finish their meal! Three of us had roast lamb and the other four had roast beef and everybody in our party said how nice it was. The roast potatoes were delicious, as was the pigs in blankets and the roast carrots-in fact none of it could be faulted. I will say the gravy was the best I have ever tasted, really rich and flavoursome-you could absolutely tell this was home made. All I can say is compliments to the chef-keep doing what you are doing and we will definitely be back! If you haven’t been here before, prepared to not only be wowed by the food but also the warm and welcoming atmosphere-this is most definitely one of the best pubs in the area.

Got there at 8.25pm, on a Saturday night, and they had already stopped serving food. Again, it was a Saturday night. Talk about losing business.

Had a Sunday lunch, the pork belly was delicious, my partner had the lamb dinner, would definitely recommend, will be here for the steak & ale pie on Thursday. Staff are so friendly, and thoroughly attentive. Laura & James

Hello, I was there for Sunday Lunch last Sunday. One family were just leaving & told us not to eat here. I had a table for 8 people & everyone was very happy. Food was excellent. Some people are just a disgrace.

Visited this place on Saturday with my family we had a Sunday dinner and it was terrible was rubbery and was like eating a packed meal in a microwave, terrible service and I honestly would avoid at all costs management are rude!

as the rudest manager there could possibly be taking pride in being an absolute bellend to your customers with absolutely appalling. Response because you got a bad review but it's not the first that has happend tho so I can speak to you why don't you get to the pub so me and you can have a little chat on the phone that would truly appreciated

I have came in twice now for a chicken burger and it is absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth a 5 star and a beautiful singer was on when I came in last time , however I was just about to book a table for me and my family for my birthday but seeing the replies are absolutely disgusting , I am absolutely appalled by the way a manager is speaking to unhappy customers, and wouldnt feel comfortable bringing my family there having seen the disgraceful language being used “retard” “needs a dress code ” ,i will not be returning ever again, it is also devastating for the staff who work for him!

*Avoid* under new management and with a new menu. I was absolutely gutted today as the food served (Sunday roast) I wouldn't have fed my dog. No apologies for our feedback or even the offer of a free pudding. What a waste of money. Such a shame as previous menu was an easy 10 out of 10.. please don't visit and waste your time and money!!!! I most certainly don't have my own restaurant, I believe you have the wrong person. My choice to visit was based on my previous experience which was very positive. To avoid any confusion for any returning customers , it may be useful to put a dress code on your new and revised website if that's the case. Clearly honest feedback isnt received with maturity and understanding. I am simply sharing my experience which luckily for some, I am entitled to do.

*such a shame* this is a country pub with no expected dress code and allows dogs inside.. really nice inside, but a tad dated. *Food*.. shockingly unpleasant unfortunately. So disappointed. It resembled a frozen birds eye dinner, with no flavour, no gravy and of course cold. *Staff* seemed inexperienced and lacked some customer service to deal with negative feedback. Will be returning tomorrow to discuss with horrendously inappropriate and insulting owner.

Just driving in the area looked for food around atherstone and this place came up, we stopped asked they accomodated four all 4 and was an amazing and wonderful dinner Brill.

Went for dinner today and will be the last time unfortunately. Have been here plenty of times to have the amazing Sunday dinner and have recommend the food to everyone I have ever spoke to about this restaurant, This was not the case today. The Sunday dinner today was like going to a cafe at best. I had to leave the majority of my vegetables as they were hard and the gravy was none existent. had to ask for more gravy which was very thin and watery. The beef was very tough and compared to your previous beef that fell apart on your fork this was very disappointing to say the least. I ate what I could as I was starving and had been looking forward to my meal all day, I did highlight I will not be returning to a member of staff as I was extremely disappointed with what was once a 10 out of 10 meal to now a 2 out of 10 at best. I was told after my meal the chef had been changed and the menu had been changed. If I knew this before ordering I doubt very much I would have ordered anything but my choice was taken away when I was not informed by this. Seeing I am unable to react to your comments I will just add to these. My name is Richard and I am also not an idiot. Why would I lie regarding what I was told about the menu being changed, I believe you need to speak with your members of staff as two female members of staff you have on today both said the same thing that the menu had changed ready for winter. Also why would I lie about the review when in my previous reviews I have highly rated your food and experiences on my past visits. Instead of apologising for our poor experience you try to belittle myself and call me names on the internet for all to see. I hope all WILL see how you treat customers if they have a complaint with very childish bully boy tactics.

Not been in here for many years. Went in for Sunday lunch after walk with a local friend. Had roast beef dinner. Was an average standard affair. Perfectly nice but nothing outstanding to comment on.

Went Monday this week and walked in, the people already in there that obviously drank there all the time, all looked at us, like we had two heads. My husband said could we order some food and was told we aren’t serving food today. I was bemused.

We went for Sunday lunch and have to say it was absolutely beautiful, compliments to the chef! The service was very good, friendly girls, definitely will return 👍 😀

The food at the horse jockey is fantastic. We had two courses last night the steak pie was so tasty and the cheese cake was the best I had ever had. The chief is so talented the staff were first class and friendly. Cost very good it's little gem.

A nice little pub/ eatery to visit, especially if your walking your dog, as there is a nice wood opposite to take stroll through.

We were camping down the road and headed for the nearest pub. Lovely friendly place with fabulous pub grub. Best chips I have had in ages and officially the best chocolate brownie in the world (as rated by my 8 year old!). Nice garden, dog and child friendly.

Great food we had a mixture of Sunday lunches and normal menu all were fantastic, the beef and lamb cooked to perfection, great sized portions. We spent most of the afternoon in the garden until the British weather forced us inside, which was even better, full of charming cosiness, great atmosphere, friendly staff and very reasonably priced drinks and food too. Will 100% be visiting again. Thanks to all the staff for a lovely afternoon. The brownie is a must try.

TRY THE MACARONI CHEESE! Oh my, oh my indeed. The mac and cheese is insanely tasty. Pure ecstasy in a bowl. Although it's listed as a starter, it's quite the meal in itself. Topped with pulled pork or other options, it's amazing. Twinned with a functional and basic campsite out back, the H&J is a cracking pub.

Popped in here with friends for a drink and a bite to eat, excellent food and a friendly service from all the staff. I would highly recommend the jumbo Cod and Chips 👌🏼

Great Sunday Roast, with good choice of beers

Unfortunately we came on a day when chaos seemed to reign. They had asked for pre-order which wasn’t passed on to the kitchen. This resulted in a long wait. When the food arrived, it was a lottery as to who got the right order. Such as shame as the food was good and portions huge! Some staff lovely, others not really bothered that two small children had to wait ages for their desserts (not what they ordered!)

Having just being here with my two daughters for a meal, it was superb. Food was extremely well presented, tasted amazing and service was friendly and efficient, highly recommend this place. Steak was cooked to perfection, and the desserts, wow 🤩 amazing.

Lovely meal in cosy surroundings, typical village pub, log burner and friendly and attentive staff. So lucky to have this on our doorstep.

Just stopped here Friday till Sunday on campsite, the weather wasn't brilliant as had snow, didn't effect our time here, the staff are amazing, food is top notch, best pub meal I've had in a long time, Sunday dinner is lovely, 14 of us and they looked after us spot on , highly recommended and will definitely go again, thank you

Nice old pub. Worth a drive out. Had Sunday dinner. Huge portions, mountains of veg served separately. The brisket was a bit fatty but really tasty. The staff are excellent and friendly.

Great pub, great restaurant, friendly staff and locals and an on-site caravan park with electric hookup. The wife had the red wine ale pie and said it was the best pie she's ever had. I had the white wine chicken and mushroom pie and it was superb. Apparently they have live entertainment once a month. Cannot recommend this place enough

Visited for sunday lunch today. WOW! Honestly, the best in the area. Not a carvery, but not a lot dearer. The service was excellent, the room is lovely, and the food......... We will be back again, and very soon.

Oh dear! Not a great experience - the staff were quite welcoming and looked to be busy and efficient - although not one of them checked back with us to see if the meal was OK or if we needed more drinks…. We arrived 10 mins early for a booked table, bearing in mind this was a Sunday set menu, it still took over 30 mins to bring our food…. Which was was nicely presented but did not live up to appearances, it was cold, the meat was tough, the roasted veg were virtually raw, all in all disappointing. The service was beyond slow, I’ve experienced faster moving glaciers, it alsotook 30 mins to bring puddings, one of which the other was supposed. to be check in with us we may have been able to express our disappointment at the time. One gentlemen literally had to wear his gloves the room was so cold and if you’re going to have high ceilings with pretty beams you really ought to have a hi-level cleaning regime in place to deal with cobwebs and general detritus from the build up of dust, needless to say a return visit is not planned. Edit in response - no we didn’t complain, neither had the time nor the inclination, it’s your job to provide a proper service not mine. If the food was cooked fresh to order then I commend you on roasting beef and undercooking vegetables in 30 mins, that takes some doing, well done, doesn’t explain why it turned up cold though, if it was freshly cooked?? Maybe I’m just used to better, so I will take my lack of common sense to the nearest Toby, thank you for the recommendation, in the meantime you practice your finely tuned customer service skills, I particularly enjoyed your rudeness, that’s was proper special, lots of love Nicki xx

Fantastic Sunday lunch. I had a very tasty vegetarian Wellington. Husband had the beef, which was also delicious. Visited this charming Village Pub yesterday for Sunday Lunch. Not from the area we took a chance and phoned to enquire. Spoke to a lovely Lady called Sarah who couldn’t have been more helpful. She said she’d check with the kitchen as we wanted a table for 5 and we had a small dog with us. She did indeed phone back and said they could fit us in on short notice. Arrived at the Pub which looks very quaint and well presented from outside. A little unconventional as it has a caravan site in the grounds. Inside we were given a warm welcome. A comfortable looking bar area leads into a lovely dining area with exposed beams and fairy lights. We were taken to another back room which was ok. The service was impeccable, the menu comprehensive and extremely reasonably priced. It was honestly one of the nicest Sunday Lunches we have had. The starter of creamy garlic mushrooms on Ciabatta was just sublime. The Lamb was so tender , roast potatoes and mashed potatoes, home made Yorkshires , cauliflower cheese , roasted carrots- everything was just amazing and so obviously home cooked. Add to this 2 huge gravy boats - everything cooked to perfection. Just so impressive especially considering the prices. Reasonably priced decent wine too. Really worth a visit. Thank you and well done.

We haven't been this place the last two years and decided to stop for a quick bite after a long walk one evening. We had some burgers, which was all right, nothing extraordinary but made us wanted to come back for a steal night on Wendesday. We waited one hour for (the place wasn't even busy) a gammon and a steak. Ordered the steak medium rare and it came out very well done. Gammon was nice,egg was more than overcooked. The waiter did offer some free drinks but we weren't really bothered. A week after stopped here again for a beer and ordered a bowl of chips and nachos. Again after an hour (!) (and the place not being busy at all) we been told the order hasn't even been put trough the kitchen. Same happened with my boyfriend and his brother waiting one hour on a summer afternoon for a baguette and a bowl of chips. The one star is for the nice beer garden and the lovely location nothing else...The managment really needs to look into what is going on with the kitchen.. EDIT Owners reply: "What is surprising is returning to a venue 3 times after a bad experience. We don’t offer a ‘quick bite’ unfortunately so may we suggest your long walk bypasses a McDonalds on future"

Such a shame this place could and should do alot better. Great for a drink in the beer garden but not for food unless you have all day to wait. We tried the steak night on a Wednesday and was really looking forward to it. Ordered a steak medium rare and the girlfriend ordered a gammon. It wasn't particularly busy but we waited nearly an hour. My steak was over cooked dry and tasteless. The guy who took the order came over and asked how the food was. I was honest and told him the steak was awful but the girlfriend's gammon was OK. He did offer another steak which i declined. He was very polite and professional but i was very hungry and had waited so long I'd had enough. A week later I stopped by while walking and ordered chips and a chicken/bacon baguette. A very long wait for just chips and a baguette. A couple of weeks after that we walked past and had a couple of drinks and decided to order some nachos and chips. Over an hour after ordering i asked where the food was? The girl behind the bar asked the kitchen and they said they haven't had the order. I said forget and left . Clearly there's an issue with the kitchen/staff that let this place down. Won't be bothering again. Such a shame as its got a lovely beer garden but all just seems a little mismanaged.
