Our second visit which was as good as the first. A great pub that has a mix of walkers/locals etc, very friendly & welcoming. Starters came with a lovely site salad(not the usual lettuce/tomato)but everything & fresh too. A sizzling steak on its way to a customer…we were sold on the smell as it passed by. We ordered ribeye, very nice & you cook it to your liking on the hot stone.

We decide to go out for Sunday Lunch, years ago we used to go th the Horse and Jockey, so we thought we would give it a try. We were not disappointed, on arrival we were greeted with covid precautions, before being taken to our table by a very pleasant young lady, she gave us time to settle before coming to ask what drinks we required. They only had a Sunday lunch menu, but even so there was enough choice. We both had the same( very boring!) Prawn cocktail, which was more than enough, but delicious, then Lamb, roast potatoes and mash were on the plate, and what I did like was the gravy came separate as did the other four vegetables. The atmosphere was good too, in these difficult times. All in all, we had a very enjoyable time.

As the pub had just started doing cream teas, we thought we’d give it a try. Glad we did, as the food was very nice, with a good variety of sweet and savoury treats. There was plenty of it as well (doggy bag!). Very good value, and the young lady who served us was very polite and efficient.

I visited with my Mum this evening for dinner, this was her first meal out since before lockdown and we were not disappointed. We both had the home-made steak and ale pie which was fabulous, huge chunks of tender steak, melt in your mouth pastry and the most amazing gravy, together with gorgeous chips. Very large portions and extremely good value. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. We will definitely visit again and would highly recommend. Thank you for making my Mum's first post-Covid dining experience so wonderful.

We have eaten here a few times before and it has been very good, but we always had steaks. We decided to have mid afternoon dinner to avoid the crowds, that may have been our mistake. When the dinners come out they were absolutely drowned in gravy, hardly any roast potatoes and the Yorkshire puddings were soggy, like they had been microwaved. We got the feeling the food had been plated up and kept warm waiting for us to come in, we were the only ones in the restaurant. The starters and deserts were excellent hence the average rating. When I go back I will definitely be sticking to the steaks. This is the only bad meal I've had there and I always give a place a second chance if they have been good in the past. There are a lot of very good eating places in the area, so they need to up their game.

The Horse and Jockey have been great. We had food from them 4 times in our 3 generation holiday to Northwood. We had a lovely lunch here, 6 adults, 2 toddlers and 4 dogs (who got given biscuits). A steak night was delicious - fun to cook your own steak on the hot stones. The other 2 evening meals were prepared especially for us as take aways as we couldn’t leave sleeping toddlers. It was all very good. Staff friendly and welcoming. We couldn’t fault it and would definitely return on another holiday. Thank you.

Pre booked for an 18th birthday family celebration for 16 from ages 70+ down to 3 years of age. As we were a large group we were asked to preorder our food and so all meals were served together. Meals all hot, good sized portions.. children’s portions of pasta very generous. Lovely to have the steak brought to table sizzling. Steak pie .. to quote someone whose had many ‘ in top 3 ever tasted!’ So a resounding endorsement and with separate servings of chips and veg make for a very substantial meal. Burgers, gammon and fish all tasty too. Empty plates sent back to kitchen shows how much we all enjoyed. Lovely atmosphere and will return very soon. Thank you

It is a shame, we looked at the trip advisor reviews which weren’t glowing, but thought we would give this place a go. The surroundings and staff were welcoming and lovely, although a little cold. The roast was not very warm, could have been the room temperature though. Meat, gravy and Yorkshire fine, the veg I think was frozen and the roasts well cooked, if a little over cooked. The lemon posset, was nice but not to our taste. Just have a look at the detail and I’m sure things would be improved

Had such high expectations after a lovely visit here a couple of years ago. The event was just my wife’s birthday and a quick, local rare escape for dinner out whilst our children were minded for us at home.Apparently the Moatshed still own this pub but have let it out to a ‘manager’. The lady hosting the bar was lovely to be fair and the place hasn’t changed much... But, the food was a massive disappointment. And the restaurant service was really poor.No clue what’s happened here, but frankly it was awful. The food was poor. I had the burger. The double burger. Two dry cheap burgers in a bun. And it arrived upside down. I wouldn’t be the least bothered about this if it was tasty... but it was dry and tasteless and very little garnish or anything with it. A few chips. The burgers were cheap and they can’t have been homemade !! My wife had the lasagne. She reckoned this was homemade and said it was fine. My prawn cocktail starter was cheap and I think not homemade. Heavily spiced and few prawns. Just not nice. My wife’s starter of spring rolls was dreadful. The ice cream I chose for dessert had no flavour and actually seemed to be flavoured ‘ice’ - cheap vegetable fat ice cream, not a real or local - or similar - decent product. We were so very disappointed.Moatshed owners get back and tell them to sort it please!! This is our local and we won’t be going back. The gents toilets were not clean and for sure hadn’t been cleaned or inspected before evening service. There’s just no way.It wasn’t expensive - £45 for the two of us - but even so... that’s not the point. The Moatshed is wonderful and we will ensure we go there next time.Come back guys and sort this lovely little local pub out else you’ll have no business left here.

The service here is appalling. There are lots of staff but they all hide in the kitchen rather than serve customers, half an hour to take the order having asked could we order. An hours wait for the main course, what no cutlery, then spot the waiters laying all the other tables pointedly ignoring the fact we'd finished our meal till we had to ask if we could order ouddings and could they remove the dirty dishes?Dont bother with pudding thrown together, covered in gloopy syrups and no cream to be found.

We usually go out for tea on a Wednesday with our friends who travel to our village 8 or so miles away to dine in our local which, we like very much. On this occasion we decided to travel to them and dine in their local, The Horse and Jockey as it was "pie and pint for £9 night. We liked the pub, nice atmosphere with the locals having a pint. While mentioning "pints" a comment i will make here is that all the "ales" available are not in full view and i missed the fact that Shropshire gold was on offer and ended up going for a beer i didn't particularly enjoy but on returning to the bar for another i spotted a Shropshire Gold sign well off to the right of the pumps. It then turned out there were more ales on offer but were quite hidden away from where i was stood. This is a mistake imo as they should be in a more prominent position. Anyway, food was ordered, four pies two beef and ale and two chicken chorizo. the meals were really nice and enjoyed by us all, no problem but then the real object of this review cropped up. Whilst settling into our second round of drinks and enjoying a nice, relaxed conversation at 19:50 a pub quiz was got under way by a man speaking into a loud pa. system, what! conversation was killed outright as we were now involved in a pub quiz we didn't go in for. It appears that the quiz sheets were offered to our table whilst i was at the bar so i had no knowledge of it whatsoever. The quiz now spoilt our experience of the place so we finished our drinks and left. Our observation was, if there is going to be a quiz, start it later when people have eaten and by the way, we realised that the majority of people had come in for the quiz which is good for the sale of drinks but not good for people eating and chatting, like us. It's up to the landlord to do as he wishes and it's obvious he values quizzers more than people going in for a nice meal and conversaion. The result of this is that, sadly, as we liked the place, food and staff we will not be going back, we will instead, be going back to our local on Wednesday again. Our local pub has it's quiz night on a Thursday which starts at 9pm. after the food has finished, much more sensible imo.

Excellent beer well kept and the new managers are really friendly and welcoming. Mark definitely knows how to keep and maintain a good pint. The place has a real buzz and I have seen a big influx of new customers in the bar and restaurant. The manager has kept the same waiting staff who are polite and knowledgeable. The pub has a new chef and having sampled some of his food I am sure he will make his mark on the place. Mark and Jan are supporting the local community and I wish them well in the village. Having said this I find it hard to understand the 2 negative reviews that have been put on. Saying the pub is "absolutely disgusting" could be taken as an insult to the local customers. We have been here a handful of times and it has always, always been absolutely divine, but apparently it is now in different hands and we were left sorely disappointed and hungry. The steak and ale pie resembled cat food, and was dry and chewy. Hardly justifiable of the price tag considering I ate the chips and that was it. I complained and was met with a pretentious rudeness, about how the meat wasn’t chewy because the waiter had tried it? Excuse me. It was chewy and disgusting, and the rest of my family around the table agreed. Very rude and nonchalant. Offered a substitute of pasta, which I declined as I do not like pasta and my family had almost finished eating. I was then offered a free sweet. Which to me is just plain rude considering they served me disgusting food and I haven’t had a main meal. I requested the manager who was pleasant enough and offered to take the main meal off the bill. However the pretentious waiter lingered and cut in every opportunity he got whilst I was trying to talk. We then decided to stay and have a dessert, we all ordered a chocolate brownie, what they served us I have no idea. It was such a tiny slice you could barely make it out on the plate. It wasn’t chocolate that’s for sure. Neither of us had the energy to complain so we finished our dessert and went to pay the bill. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU EAT HERE! IT WAS DISGUSTING! RUDE STAFF WHO TRY AND BELITTLE CUSTOMERS. It was beautiful when we have been there in the past, but it has really gone down hill. Will never return. Lost 5 loyal customers.

No longer run by the Vernon family and sadly no longer the same high quality of service or food. Small portions served on small plates to deceive patrons into thinking they are getting value for money when they are not. Steak pie not the raised pie full of succulent meat serve with a rich gravy now replaced with a bland virtually meat free offering that would hardly fit the description. Sticky toffee pudding so small a portion that it looked lost on the plate very bland. Fire alarm constantly sounding when ever a diner had a steak on the stone served. Service slow coffee ordered not served left tired of waiting. Will not return

We visited here for my son's birthday. Four from the party had the steak which you cook yourself on a hot stone and others in the party had fish, burgers and pie. All of the meals were huge with beautiful presentation. We went as a party of fourteen. The menu is not extensive but what there is is well cooked and presented. I had the pate to start which was very good, my main was a steak and ale pie , which was actually two slices of shortcrust pastry with large chunks of tender beef inside. My dessert was a boozy lemon ice cream, mine was nice but one of our party had the same without the booze and as the lemon flavour was a shot of limoncello hers was just vanilla ice cream. The place had been well decorated and has a nice seating area outside the only thing it lacks is atmosphere.

The menu wasn't extensive and the food was simply described. When it came, however, it was superb. Between us we had 2 lasagnes (one beef, one vegetarian) a steak and ale pie and a beetroot and goat's cheese tart. All were very good, and the chips on the side were absolutely perfect. The beer was good too, and fairly priced across a wide selection. The menu is fairly standard, albeit a large number of the dishes ( 6 out of 13 main courses) served with the same accompaniments of chips, salad and coleslaw .The garlic bread we ordered whilst waiting for main courses was made with a white bloomer, sliced and buttered with garlic butter, but given too brief a spell in the oven - it was pale, pliable , and served with limp undressed salad garnish. Two main courses of chicken in parma ham were slightly dry and overcooked, and the steak pie appeared to be a precooked puff pastry case with beef casserole in the middle. The casserole itself was quite tasty, but the pastry was rather hard and overdone. The burger was okay, although nothing exceptional. All dishes came with fries which were very nice - crisp and dry. The chicken and burger came with coleslaw which was probably homemade, but nothing special, and the vegetables with the steak pie were okay. Service was friendly and fairly prompt, and the young staff helpful. We were all a little disappointed having gone along hoping to find a new local favourite for a routine Thursday or Friday evening out, but it is rather let down by the just average food.

I love what the new owners have done with the place, and thought the menu was lovely, I had pate to start and enjoyed it, I had steak for my main and absolutely hated the way it was served, first you have to cook it your self, I like my steak blue so by the time it was served to me it was overcooked, I don't like having a hot plate with children on the table, and then to eat your dish was smaller than my toddlers plate so I couldn't put my onion rings, salad or chips on the plate with my steak forcing me to eat it all separate, which is a shame as the meat itself was a lovely cut. I'm not sure I would try again but I hope the business is a success in the long run.

We were not disappointed the food was delicious, we had the rib eye steak, the sea bass special and the penne vodka. All were beautifully cooked and served. The service was great and the staff were friendly. We will definitely be eating here again.

We are regular visitors to the Red Lion in Myddle. We return every time because the food and service is second to none. We always receive a warm welcome and we know how hard Pete and Jackie and staff work to make sure that their guests are not disappointed. If you fancy a meal out around Shrewsbury (lunch or dinner) then look no further than the Red Lion. You won’t regret it.
