Needed s place near Kielder Castle for a couple of nights on a work trip and I found this place. Deceptively spacious bar and restaurant area and very nicely refurbished. Good selection of beers and a gun menu with Fever Tree mixers. Food is very good with no small measures. Try the chicken with Haggis stuffing, great combination. Rooms are nicely decorated clean and really just what you need. There are 9 rooms here, as o mentioned earlier it is deceptively large. The staff are very helpful and friendly too. Plenty of parking available.

Excellent stop over in our 5.4m campervan. There were several spaces at rear of pub with electric hook up and water for £10. The owner, who is also a motor homer, is hoping to have a chemical disposal facility installed in the future. Its free without the electric hook up. Free wifi. All they ask is that you use the bar or restuarant. Food very good, staff freindly and helpful. Would definitely use again.

We visited with our dog after a long drive up from Leeds. We were made very welcome. Our dog was brought water and a biscuit too. They had a vegan menu for one of our party and like everyone else's food it was excellent. For me the highlight was seeing locals arriving for a community bake off which looked well supported and showed the pub is really part of the village.

Whilst touring the borders we visited this newly refurbished pub with rooms in our motorhome on a Wednesday evening. A lovely welcome from the new owners David and Dawn, who have turned this place around from the 2018 nightmare reviews into the now ‘glowing’ 2019 reviews. We found this little gem of a pub so nice that we went back the next night too! Dog friendly and frequented not only by locals (always a good sign) but also others from further afield. Nicely kept beer and a reasonable selection of wines, as well as good quality wholesome pub food that is very well priced (including vegetarian). This place is definitely on the up now that this forward thinking couple are in charge. Locals, tourists, travelling workers, cyclists and motorcyclists are all welcome and they have 9 bedrooms if you want to stop over. We shall certainly be back next time we venture north as It’s an ideal stop off point on the way to the highlands, or as a place to stay as you tour the borders.

I don’t often go out to eat and am often disappointed when I do. This was not the case here. My food -steak pie- was cooked to perfection and my 3 companions said the same. The service was friendly but not too obtrusive and we felt very welcome. It was good to enjoy such an experience after some of the problems the pub has had under previous management. Well done to Dawn and David and their staff.

Having lived in the area for over a decade I've seen the Horse and Hound change hands many times to little success. I returned with my girlfriend after hearing about the recent change of management. I'm delighted to see that the Pub and restaurant are finally in the right hands.Booking was simple and parking was plentiful. The owners and staff were delightful. Service couldn't be faulted, the food arrived promptly and was of a very high standard. We took the recommendation of the owner and tried the family recipe cheesecake, which was certainly the highlight of the experience. It's clear that a lot of love and effort have gone into this project. The reviews left by previous customers under different management are certainly not reflective of the high quality of the establishment now.

As regular visitors to this restaurant we had high hopes following the recent refurbishment of both inside and out. Sadly the proprietor has concentrated on style over substance. The food was honestly the worst I have ever been served in a place purporting to be a restaurant. Some items had been badly cooked, stored and then preheated. This is a nice pub with friendly staff but unless and until someone is prepared to actually cook the food freshly they should stick to serving a cheese toastie.

We weren't over inspired by the menu and found the prices pretty high for a pub. The dining area is newly decorated but sparse and lacked warmth and atmosphere. The starters were nicely presented but not very exciting taste wiseMy partner ordered gammon steak with sweet potato fries for just under £12. The gammon was almost black on one side and slightly cooked on the other. It was thin cut and very tough. My roast beef dinner came with lukewarm veg and a roast potato that was under cooked almost £11, I think it had been boiled then deep fried rather than toasted in beef juices. My mini size Yorkshire pud was solid and I couldn't eat it. We then waited 20 mins to get our plates took away and to order our dessert. Then a further 20 mins and asking twice before they arrived. I believe the waitress had finished for the night even though it was 7 pm and we were the only ones left in the dining roomTo be fair to the owners, when we did complain they did everything they could to put things right. Offering a new gammon steak and then reducing our bill by not charging for the main course and giving us a free drink each. Very disappointed as was expecting a good value, honest, home cooked rustic meal from such a traditional pub! Please don't be fancy just serve the kind of food that Granny used to make.

This Inn has quite a nice lounge and restaurant. The food is simple but well prepared and presented. My husband had the fish pie and I had the haddock and chips. Servings were large so can't comment on the desserts as we were too full. They do appear to change their menu fairly regularly which makes it great if you stay more than one night. The staff is friendly but the meal did take a while to arrive considering there were only us and another couple there. We do tend to want to eat earlier than most restaurants start serving , so perhaps we were early. Dis take advantage of the bar offerings while we were waiting.

Sadly a rather underwhelming experience! After a long day driving, arrived at our B & B to be told that this pub has recently had new staff and guests had given mixed reviews. As we liked the idea of walking to and from it and therefore being able to relax with a drink, we thought we'd try it and be optimistic. It wasn't busy when we arrived after a 40 minute pleasant walk and plenty tables were available ( there were 2 other tables nearby occupied during our meal...so not hectic!) we found the menu very limited indeed and ended up ordering the gammon, egg and chips x 2. I have to say that at £11.95 each, gammon with one rather greasy egg, a portion of peas, a small portion of chips and 4 large chips, organised into a very miserly 'Jenga' style pile did not really justify the price! We ordered a pint of the cask ale and a large white wine ( both were fine) and a jug of iced water- the water was brought promptly by a very sweet, very young, slightly nervous blond waitress, however she was friendly. We ordered a half pint of the cask ale, together with a small glass of white wine, to drink in the seated bad area after we finished our meal ( we didn't bother with a dessert.) We did wonder why it took well over 10 minutes for our drinks to appear, when the bar was quite quiet! My husband went to pay the bill whilst I went to the ladies before our gentle hike back to the B & B. When I returned some minutes later, I was surprised to find him with 3 female members of staff who were trying to write down and add up the bill! They were struggling and seemed to be checking with each other what the drinks cost...and having difficulty adding up! They first added up the 4 drinks: large wine £5.05, small wine £3.35, pint of cask ale £3.25, half pint of cask ale £3.25. He was just paying as I arrived. As we got to the exit, I checked the bill and found that he'd been overcharged for the 4 drinks! I added them up and totalled £13.30...they charged him £13.80! It may have only been 50p...but still! Seeing as we'd already paid £11.95 each for our less than generous main courses, we felt £37.70 total was not good value! Clearly portions need to be more generous, eggs less greasy and staff taught basic maths! Service was ok but could have been a lot more friendly and welcoming! Would we recommend! I'm afraid not. On the walk home, we agreed it was a lot of money for a disappointing experience! We decided we'd have been better off driving somewhere for basic fish and chips! Heaven help them if they have a busy evening!

This pub has been much commented on locally in the past few years due to various management changes. Now, it appears to be in good hands again. Our friends and us has a lovely meal here on a Friday night, which appears to be Curry Night. The lamb curry was really very succulent. The fish and chips was well rated as well, as was the breaded brie starter. We were all very happy with the things we ordered. We also liked the design of the lounge, featuring various coloured seats and sofas. unfortunately the coffee machine was out of order, but they made coffee in the kitchen which was quite good as well. We have been warned to reserve a table, since it has been known to happen that the chef get sent home if there are no reservations. We'll bear it in mind, as we'll be sure to eat here again.

After 6 hours traveling myself, husband & little boy were hungry & tired. So we ordered a children's meal of sausages & chips with veg a vegetable hot pot for me as being vegetarian that was my only choice and a rump steak for my husband as was steak night. Carrots on my sons tasted very strange. Vegetable hot pot had no flavour and lots of frozen veg with a couple of fresh thrown in a tined tomato sauce topped with mashed pot and my husbands rump was a thin fatty steak that was also cooked wrong! I did complain at end of meal as was tired and fed up of being served bland vegetarian food, they said sorry and that was it, so no next time for us it will be straight home!
