Please don’t let other reviews or your initial first impressions of the appearance or this restaurant put you off. We aren’t from Shrewsbury so found this online and decided to give it a go. Initially, we were surprised to find it didn’t look like a traditional Chinese but that’s because this place does not claim nor pretend to be an authentic Chinese. What this place does is serve delicious, fresh, authentic food from Hong Kong. The meal was absolutely superb and the staff were SO friendly, polite and attentive. We are so glad we went and would definitely go again.

Nice people and service was good. However, this is literally an eat-in Chinese takeaway. Food is very average and extremely expensive. I had to pinch myself when looking at the menu. Lighting in the restaurant is awful, no atmosphere and cold. Would not go back, but the people were nice and accommodating and the food was ok. Save your money and get a Chinese takeaway for a fraction of the cost!

This is not a Chinese restaurant the food has a different twist. The food was delicious we had duck to start with lots of pancakes, it was tasty with enough crispy bits. Noodles and Beef curry along with rice were very tasty and big portions. The lovely waitress gave us details about the dishes. She took my allergy issues which were met by the kitchen. The restaurant was full so had a good atmosphere.

I took my partner for a birthday lunch, the setting is not encouraging, wide open space with very little atmosphere, with laminated menus. Very good table service, the waitress was excellent and handled my complaint with tact and concern. The starters were beautiful, hot ,tasty and set the meal off well. Then it went really bad. I ordered chow mien with brisket and crispy noodles. What I got was a pile of meat with gristle/skin on top of a pile of noodles that were soft in the middle and crispy around the edges and a very dead looking spring onion hung limply over the top. The meat was totally inedible. The passing waitress saw my concern and immediately offered a replacement. I ordered pork this time and what I got was eight tiny cubes of very roasted and flame hardened belly pork cubes and a large bowl of steamed rice. I don’t think you could ever eat that much steamed rice. My partner had the prawn chow mein and that was a pile of soft noodles with six prawns in it. When you consider the two mains cost nearly £30 that was not a a good deal. The deep fried ice creams for dessert were excellent.

The Szechuan pepper chicken is on full of flavor and a bit of heat that really hits the spot. And those golden egg yolk chicken wings, they're addictively good! The staff were very attentive so service was excellent, the waitress who served us was lovely and friendly she has really set the bar high on how a waitress really should be working in a restaurant. We loved that they played classic Canto pop music which gave us a very nostalgic feeling to the atmosphere. The food was lovely and every plate was bought out steaming hot, flavours were amazing. I had only heard of this restaurant only a couple weeks prior, and I can definitely say that this place exceeded my expectations. When looking at the menu, I thought it was a little pricey as I assumed that portions were on the smaller side… but when the dishes came out, the portions were definitely generous for its set price. The pork and bean sprout chow mai was only £12.50 - the portion was so big that we had to bring it back with us! The vegetable was a perfect savory side that went great with the rest of our dishes. On the menu, it clarifies that the soup could be as a pot or a bowl, so I initially wanted to order the pot for the two of us, however, the waitress added that it would be too big. I was a little hesitant as I wanted to share, but when it came out, at least five generous smaller bowls could be made out of that - only £5! The BBQ Steamed Pork Bun came in three, and the Siu Loong Bao came in four. For the Siu Loong Bao, I recommend having them with ginger and vinegar (they can provide) because it compliments the pork stuffing to a great extent. The Char Siu Bao (steamed bun) was absolutely amazing. For my boyfriend who has ham & cheese sandwiches on a daily basis, he was absolutely blown away by the flavors within this dish - I highly recommend. The staff so generously provided us with a free dessert from their menu, but as we were too stuffed to have it within the restaurant, we had the option that was able to be taken away - the Mango Sago with Coconut Milk; a personal favorite. This dessert may not appeal to a large population, but if you’re wanting to try an authentic Hong Kong dessert, this is definitely the one to try! I grew up in Hong Kong and after not visiting the country for 5 years, this restaurant has definitely satisfied all my cravings. The staff were so helpful when aiding us in deciding what to order, and the interior was appealing with Cantonese music playing (added that extra touch). If wanting to try authentic Hong Kong cuisine in Shrewsbury, I could not recommend any other place but this restaurant. The flavors of these dishes are none like the rest in Shrewsbury - a 12/10.

The positives: Service was really good, we were seated immediately and drinks orders taken. Food orders were taken quickly and the food arrived within 15mins. The Negatives: First chinese restaurant we have been to with no soy sauce or other condiments on the table. We had to ask and then a tiny amount was brought. The food was OK but nothing amazing. In particular the spare ribs were bland and had no been marinated just deep fried with some coating. The food from our local takeaway is actually more flavourful and a lot less expensive (£20 vs £70). However, Hongkonger is fairly new and they have time to improve and hone the menu so will give them another visit in 2 - 3 months.

As the town has been lacking a good Chinese restaurant for years I really, really wanted this place to be fabulous. Visited at 5pm on a Saturday evening and unfortunately you could tell straight away that it is a new venue. We understood that there was a staff shortage that evening and some friends had been roped in to help. This meant that some staff were helpful and knew what they were doing whilst others wandered around, hands in pockets and spending half their time on the phone. It also meant that their knowledge of the menu was non existent, about the only thing they could relay was items that were sold out. Clearly the restaurant is still getting to grips with how much to order, it was a shame that 2 dishes we wanted weren't available and judging by a similar conversation on other tables there were also other dishes unavailable. Always a disappointing start when you can't have half the things you wanted. The portions aren't huge and the price is a bit too high for what you are getting. The food was tasty, but I was hoping for something special and it just didn't live up to that expectation. For context if you are used to visiting China town in Birmingham then you are getting roughly 1/3 less for about 1/3 more. I really hope they keep going and I hope they can iron out these teething issues. I look forward to going back in a few months and fingers crossed it's like a well oiled machine, everything is available and we get something fabulous

So, we visited this restaurant with much excitement. We were given a warm welcome by the staff however they probably need training on the protocols involved in running a food outlet like this. For a start how about handing menus to the customer instead of leaving them on the table for the customer to find. Another benefit of handing the menus to customers is that whilst doing so you could perhaps tell them what is available and not available. After choosing our preferred dishes we were told that one whole page was unavailable. How frustrating! The straw that broke the camels back arrived when requesting if we could have some mushrooms with one of the beef dishes. The response “Of course, that will be an extra £10 but it does include broccoli too” I don’t mind at all paying extra but £10 for a portion of mushrooms? Really guys? At this point we finished our Dubai priced beer and wine and left. We will not be back, we would rather stick to Chinatown even if it does involve travelling. What a shame!

After much anticipation about trying this restaurant me and my family decided to pop in on a quiet Sunday evening 02/04/23. After a friendly greeting I had high hopes about the place. After looking through a very extensive and pricey menu we settled for a crispy chicken in sweet and sour sauce, a chicken chow mein and egg fried rice. This took over 10 minutes to place the order as they didn't offer a chicken version but only seafood and beef. We got there in the end. My family ordered all there's at the same time. All the food came out at various times over a half an hour period. My chicken came out straight away (10 minutes before everything else). My dad had his crispy duck and waited 20 minutes for his rice to appear. We had also finished one main before the rice came too. At this point 3 other main dishes were missing. When the chow meins arrived they were the wrong ones (seafood) which we didn't order. We then had to wait a further 20 minutes for the correct dishes. When these came out I was gob smacked. It looked like something a 5 year old would have made. No vegetables, swimming in grease and as bland as it could be. All for £15 a dish!!!! No seasoning or flavouring. All 3 dishes were left untouched. I complained to the manager and requested that these be deducted from the bill. After much deliberation only £7.50 was knocked off a total bill of £96. Extortionate prices, poor service and terrible food. Avoid at all costs. I will most certainly NOT be back. Left out of pocket and very hungry. See pictures attached.

An utterly shocking place. Having placed an order, we were told one of the items was not available and staff made a suggestion of something similar at £4 more expensive, but were not prepared to price match it to the original item. Total intransigence by all of the staff resulted in us walking out without finishing our drinks and ultimately cost the restaurant more in unpaid drinks than the original dispute.

Stylish restaurant, calming atmosphere, uncluttered, comfortable seating, very attentive and polite staff, great location. Only complaint for me personally, being vegetarian, is there was so little to offer. But then what would I expect of Hong Kong/Cantonese cuisine? I thought there would at least be a tofu dish, but even the tofu dishes mostly came with pork. Britain is usually quite good these days at having several veggie options on the menu. I had fried noodle and vegetable as my lunch special for £11. It was tasty and filling, but devoid of protein. So, probably won’t return.

We've had a few take aways from China House and the food has been excellent. Always really hot and tasty. Definitely recommend.

Three weeks on the trot we spent £50-70 each week every week the order was wrong, each time I called and complained they blamed it on me saying I didn’t order what I had in fact ordered, today I ordered( amongst other things) a chicken chow mein, I checked the order it was read back to me, I asked him to check it again as we had had two bad experiences he checked it and said it was correct in front of me. Got home to find a special chow mien ( we don’t like pork or prawns) I called and explained that yet again it was wrong they said I ordered a special chow mien ( a dish I have never heard of) I heard them in the background whilst I was on the phone saying I had checked it and it was right and that basically I was the problem , reluctantly they offered to deliver the chow mien ( we live 20 minutes away so all the other meals would be cold) they didn’t offer to refund me for the meal we didn’t get and the special chow mien was binned . Never going again as they’ve done this three times and instead of apologising they blamed me for their mistakes, never offered a refund for food we didn’t get and spoiled our family night repeatedly- just be aware, my advise to to take everything out of the bag and check it yourselves! Just to add insult to injury the food that we did eat was bland and the chips were dry - not good at all
