If you like olde worldy, youll love this hotel however, also bear in mind that to access the top floor rooms, you'll need to climb 45 steps every time so it's not for those with mobility issues. Our room entitled Mayfield was nice but did not deserve to be called deluxe or exceptional and, whilst there was complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits and water, the milk was out of date and curdled the tea and, there were no tissues so you had to blow your nose on toilet paper. Although not the owners, the couple who run the hotel were friendly and accommodating and their breakfast choices were good as was its quality and presentation. Unfortunately however, because there is no bar or restaurant available, you are forced to brave the elements on foot or by car and find somewhere else to patronize every evening. The hotel is well situated to access the numerous places of interest in the locality and there is free private parking albeit up a very steep hill so, drop your bags off at the hotel before you park up.

Surprisingly in Matlock Bath there's little in the way of coffee shops! I was desperate for my morning fix, it was raining and we both needed a hot drink after our walk..My wife, said about going inside, The Hodgkinsons Hotel, as we were nearly out of options, I wasn't so sure, however we did. What a lovely surprise, once we went in. Lovely little table and chairs, in a charming building. We had a lovely coffee and tea here, served by friendly welcoming staff. I highly recommend this place...but don't tell everyone 🤫

We did not stay in the hotel - we had tea and cakes in the bar/cafe downstairs. Very good cakes - two of us had Bakewell tart slices, and one a slice of parkin - and it was also a very nice and relaxed space. Almost everywhere else in Matlock Bath seems to be a fish & chip restaurant so it was great to find a regular cafe!

We didn’t stay at the hotel but popped in for lunch and a hot drink yesterday with our dog. The service was amazing, super friendly staff and really knowledgeable about the history and the area. Would really recommend this family-run cafe and hotel.

Worst hotel I've ever stayed in,the room was filthy,to the point that they cheated us out of another £160 when we left to clean the room, the filthy room we had stayed in. Avoid this place at all costs, disgusting.

Thankyou for a lovely two night stay in your gem of a hotel. It is a place that we have already recommended to family and friends. We are already planning our next visit as we could find nothing to fault. We even found the window view from Calke interesting. I did take a climb up to the terrace gardens and the view was fantastic. The wife did give that part a miss though due to being scared of heights. The two different types of breakfasts we had over the two nights were very tasty and we liked the pre order system. Thankyou to all the staff and I hope you will welcome is back in the future. Stuart and Diane Brown.

We visited this restaurant yesterday as it was listed as a recommendation by the accommodation that we were staying at nearby in Matlock. We now know that this recommendation was made based upon the restaurants previous reputation/owners and that it has since been taken over by new management in recent weeks. As stated in another recent review - do not be fooled by the older reviews, the images or the old menu of the food that used to be served here. We arrived for our reservation (which was for 6pm) 5 minutes early to see that the ‘closed’ sign was still up on the front door. When we popped our heads in to enquire we were advised that the table was ready but that ‘the chef was not’. That should’ve been enough of a red flag in hindsight but we wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. We went away and had a drink at a nearby pub and returned 20 minutes later. The menu was disappointing to say the least compared to what we were expecting having done a bit of research beforehand. There was just one chef working alone in an open kitchen and one waiting member of staff for the entire restaurant. 3 of us ordered the stone bass and one ordered the fish and chips. The food was some of the worst that I have ever eaten in a restaurant despite waiting well over 40 minutes for our only course. We felt unable to make too much of a scene at the time as the restaurant was so small and intimate and because the chef was working in an open kitchen within the dining area. There were also some other diners present. When we received the bill we were charged £108 for a meal which consisted of 4x main courses and 4x soft drinks. We were left feeling so upset and ripped off and to be honest it ruined that evening of our holiday for us. I never usually write reviews, especially not negative ones but feel so strongly about our experience and really don’t want anyone else to be fooled into visiting this restaurant on based on its previous reputation and being left feeling the way that we did.

Had brunch with friends who have just moved to the area, 2 orders of eggs Benedict and one full breakfast all outstanding and beautifully presented. The best eggs I think I have ever tasted! The ladies who looked after us today were very professional but mostly very friendly and patient taking time to show us around and answer all our questions, the lady serving us was very attentive and had a great sense of humour 🤣We will definitely be back.
