We were a large group booked into Hobb’s Bistro and were pleasantly surprised at being given a ‘private’ room. Lots to choose from on the menu and perfect, friendly & professional staff. We opted for a variety of dishes and can thoroughly recommend the seafood chowder and the mussels (from Fowey). These we did have to order in advance…..totally worth it! The portions are large so we couldn’t manage to even look at the dessert menu. With wine, cider & tip, it worked out at £35pp. Brilliant value for money and definitely a restaurant we would return to.

Went here on a Saturday night and arrived before a large party arrived. Our food was nice and portions were very large all things considered. But the floor looked pretty dirty which was off putting. The restaurant is all very cosy so if there is a large party or group in you do feel all part of it, but I didn't understand why someone had a nickname of KitKat, I may never know... In all a nice restaurant and good meal. Just clean the floor.

Annual visit and nothing really changes, the duck legs are a great dish, large portions all round. These duck legs would also make a great variation on the tagine. The black pud starter is tasty and once again, generous portions, I'd leave the toast/bread out of it and it would still be a great starter. The one thing I would definitely change is the Guinness, much better to just stock the 440ml cans draught and get rid of the surger, kit. In my opinion it's not such a good Guinness. Thank for a lovely evening.

Table booked Service ok Stone floor didn’t look too clean The food was average at best - the crispy beef ordered as a starter was tasteless - not crispy at all - and surrounded by a massive amount of batter. Massive plate of whitebait served as a starter would have been better in a smaller portion had it been served with a small amount of brown bread - it was served on its own Ribs “from the grill” appeared to have been braised The Otherwise nice burger was spoiled by the presentation of what appeared to be tinned or bottled white onions - not caramelised as stated There are other places locally who are far more likely to get a second visit when we get to Croyde again

Average at best. Unfortunately all other tables received incredible service, were checked on throughout, however we weren’t asked and had to ask for additional menus, for water etc. The food was okay, our mussels were lovely but unfortunately our daughter had to send her burger back as it was purple and full of gristle. They did rectify this and made a small pizza for her. Unfortunately we had all finished by the time this had come out. We wouldn’t return but was not too bad.

A group of 14, with a pre-order almost a week in advance, led us to believe that things would go swimmingly here. They didn't! It took a while for a drinks order to be taken. This was done half of our party at a time, only to then find that the Korev 'new barrel' tasted awful and chemically. There was no other draught beer available, so the chaps had bottled beers decanted into pint glasses. The waitress had told the kitchen to start cooking our pre-ordered food before we'd even sat down, so nothing else could be added. The kids' sausage and chips, the sausage was pretty awful. I'm not sure if it was cheap or just overcooked, maybe deep-fried, but they didn't eat it. One of our party has an allergy, and unfortunately, we had missed that an item in her meal contained her devil allergen. That was on us, but when we asked for another, which we would have happily paid for, the steak was clearly just transferred to a clean plate and reserved within a couple of minutes. It takes longer than 2 minutes to cook a 2 inch thick fillet steak, and we know what they had done immediately. We asked the waitress to take it away, and my friend did not want another as she now did not trust them. This is an allergy, not a preference. This could have gone very badly. It's not good enough when someone has told you that they have an allergy. Imagine if this was a child who carried on and ate it without noticing. It's a good job my friend's allergy does not cause anaphylaxis or this could have been terrible! Anyway, the other good was good, very nice in fact, but the service was a bit meh. They were good enough to present us with the cake we had bought for our other friend, for her birthday, and bring us plates, but I got the impression that they were a bit like a rabbit in the headlights when it comes to service. We won't return, unfortunately, which is a shame as it's in a great location for our annual holiday in Croyde. We'll stick to The Thatch!

Available for an early evening meal on a Sunday night, as we only booked the weekend away at very short notice. As others have said decor is OK but were there for the food. Drinks -pretty good selection, provided water in jug - Cornish beer was good. Shared mussels for starter (special) good portion, hot and tasty but bread a bit disappointing (probably some part baked type mini baguette). Fried brie quite typical with a garnish and a small pot of ready bought sweet chilli dip. Duck legs - good sized portions and tender. Red cabbage was OK Belly pork - pork was a bit dry / overcooked, cracking good. Apple sauce out of jar and the other sauce with it pretty bland. Both above served with dauphinoise potatoes, which must have been pre-cooked and re-heated - this and the basic carrots and broccoli were only just hot enough. Lamb tagine, lamb quite tender, nuts gave some texture but couldn't really identify as Moroccan. Cous cous somewhat strange with peas in, but was described with that. Overall food just felt very average and so over priced compared to other places but it seems the restaurant relies on the seasonal trade so perhaps less concerned about its reputation and cooking to a good standard.

Should have guessed what was in store when it was the only restaurant in busy Croyde where we could book a table. The decor, ambiance and background music are old fashioned and a bit depressing. It’s a throwback to the 80’s with crushed velvet dining chairs (the kind that are heavy and tricky to pull in to the table), gold paint on some ‘feature’ walls and dark wood beams. The food unfortunately didn’t improve our view of the place: overcooked duck, overcooked veg and everything tasted like it had been brought in from Brake brothers or the likes rather than being freshly cooked. The only good thing is the friendly service. We couldn’t leave quickly enough.

We chose this 'unseen' before we arrived for our stay in the area, during the lightest set of covid restrictions. The food was delicious, especially the tagine and the keralan curry, and the service was pleasant and efficient. So it was a shame that the atmosphere was a bit odd, as this could be a fantastic place. The building exterior conveyed something warm and cosy, but the interior was monochrome and bright lights. We stood a good few minutes on the doormat before anyone came to greet us, and throughout the meal it felt as though the other diners stared whenever anyone moved! I'm sure that a new look and/or rearrangement would sort it out and encourage more people to stay for longer.

Lovely location. Regular visitors to Croyde but usually have children with us so hadn’t tried here before. This is not a restaurant you’d bring to children to. Decor is a little strange, being a little bistro we were expecting something different. I likened it to an Indian restaurant.Waiting staff were lovely. Very attentive and friendly. Drinks were expensive so ordered less than we usually would of. Menu was varied but only one vegetarian option. To be honest, the meals were fine. Just nothing to be overly impressed with or excited about eating. So we were disappointed, especially for the price you have certain expectations. The ingredients are obviously bought in and not freshly made. The vegetarian curry came with one poppadom (like the ones from the supermarket), and what looked like boil in the bag rice, but really would of benefitted from a small naan, and an array of sauces. It just would of been more impressive and appealing. My husband had the burger which again was just ok. It came with back of bacon complete with all the fat, and he hadn’t been asked how he’d like his burger cooked so it was more well done than he would like. We didn’t stay for dessert or coffee and picked up an ice cream from next door to eat on the way home. Unfortunately we wouldn’t come again as the prices are too expensive and the food is underwhelming, but being Croyde I am sure this place will do well.

First of all let me start with the positive. The staff were friendly and attentive but they were let down by below average food. The interior is a bit bizarre, shoddy furniture...I just put this weirdness down to Covid. The interior was very dated and the furniture was in bad condition...which on its own I wouldn’t mind but for the price of the items on the menu I would expect either a decent meal...or a decent chair to sit in....In principal the menu looked good and catered for all tastes. We ordered the bread and nibbles to start, the olives were terrible cheap quality as were the sun dried tomatoes and these were accompanied by one of those ‘baguettes’ you can cook at home from the supermarket. This was VERY overpriced at £9 and I was disappointed. The table next to us ordered a garlic bread....when it was brought out it was one of the ones you can buy in the supermarket and cook in 10 minutes. One of us had the mussels which were good quality. However the pork belly was a bit meh. Presentation was pork on parsnips, these were supposed to be roasted in honey but they were just boiled. The seasonal vegetables were some over cooked carrots and broccoli. Not really what you expect when you have a meal out. Non alcoholic drinks were overpriced...£4 for a basic lemonade...not a fancy brand...just from the tap. All in all...if you want the mussels...this could be a nice place. However don’t expect awesome things.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meals at this excellent bistro, so much so we ate here two out of the three nights of our stay! The food was delicious and plentiful with a varied menu on offer and the service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. They even accommodated our dog, Lily, who was made to feel very welcome. We will definitely return to this wonderful bistro with its tasty food and friendly staff on our next visit to Croyde.

Fabulous socially distanced meal. The crispy beef is amazing - lightest batter I have ever tasted. The lamb tagine was perfect - soft, tender morsels of lamb, juicy apricot & light, fluffy couscous. The chicken stroganoff was equally fantastic. The service was impeccable. Don’t miss the opportunity to eat here!!!

Called in for an evening meal a few nights back and was pleasantly surprised. Good menu selection (in comparison to local pubs) and food and drinks all a good price. We only had main courses, as much as we wanted pudding we were too full. The food was tasty we ordered the ribs and the duck. Service was prompt and friendly. Would return again if I returned to Croyde.

We are a family of 4 and 2 out of 4 meals were Lovely. My daughter had the childrens ribs but they were on the spicey side and hardly any meat on them and my Husband had the pork which he said was really quite tough.I had a Pizza which was very nice and my Son had a burger which he really enjoyed.I thought it was a very expensive meal for what we had but then Croyde itself is quite pricey for food.

Called in to see if there was any availability as the bistro looked quite busy.Got a table and was quicky seated. The waitress here who's name we didn't take and should have so we could name her as she was the most pleasant polite waitress we have ever met! She was petite with dark hair in a pony tail. The food was served in a reasonable timescale as were the drinksThe garlic ciabatta was a good portion size but disappointing as it was extremely dry and tasteless The pizzas I believe were nice but the margarita one was was overcooked and dry. The onion rings were good but the skin on fries were disappointing. There were only a few with skin on.We kind of expected home made but tasted more from a frozen bag.The seafood paella was nicely presented but for the cost we believe it was over priced. The place itself has a cosy feel and nice interior.Good for a couple wanting a quite meal.

Visited Hobs Bistro twice on our 2 week holiday in Croyde. First meal was good but second one and our last night!! was so disappointing. Pizza felt more like a shop bought base rather than fresh thin pan like Billy Buds (amazing pizzas) and the burger was not a patch on the Blue Groove redneck or the Kings Arms burger. Onion rings were ridiculously fatty. Service was amazing from one of our waitresses and I felt so guilty saying not completely happy with meal as she was soo nice (sorry did not get name, young polite girl with long dark hair). As for our other waitress can I just say please just work on being a little nicer. She was the only negative during our first visit.

In August in Croyde, every restaurant should be packed out and this one wasn't. It's a shame as the service was friendly and efficient and the food was decent. The lamb with roast potatoes and vegetables was very tasty. The whitebait starters were great. It's seems little more expensive than the neighbouring restaurants and it's hard to justify the extra because they are good too (if you can get a table) . It also lacks atmosphere because it is quite empty even though it's small. It would be great for a romantic twosome on a special date but that isn't what's happening in Croyde in August.

Not sure if all the food is at the same level of their pizza, but we chose to take them away and the pizza dough is clearly not home made and has no flavour. The rest of the pizza is oily and with no real taste. Why not make proper pizza when you advertise them on your door?...

Friendly staff, good location, nice atmosphere & the food is delicious! If your thinking of coming here and have read some of the previous negative reviews I would recommend ignoring them and visiting!!! I had the whitebait starter which was really nice followed by the steak which was sooooo tasty. Portions really good & fairly priced. Would definitely recommend visiting if you are in the area.

Having visited Croyde for many years it is possible to overlook Hobb’s Bistro for the more popular pubs and restaurants around, such as the Thatch. However, with the Manor being a disaster zone when talking of service (or if you’re prepared to waist up to two hours for your food - yes two hours) then Hobb’s is a must. Quaint little place it was a pleasure to get away from the rat race of the usual tourist eateries in Croyde. The food was really lovely and the service brilliant. To be honest we couldn’t fault it. And the price is a bonus as the menu is actually cheaper than meals in the other local pubs! Ridiculous! The only small advice would be for a little more background music to add to the cosy ambience. However, that aside, we thoroughly enjoyed it. We’ll definitely be back for a cosy table for two next year!! My advice is to try It as I think you’d be pleasantly surprised.

We had read previous reviews, however we were attending a wedding the next day and staying in the area. Due to it being a bank holiday weekend it was felt prudent to book as there were 6 of us. Most of our party had the mussels which looked excellent, I had the chilly beef which could have been anything fried so was a little disappointed. Main courses were average and there was very little atmosphere which was a shame. With a bit of tweaking I am sure this restaurant could be good, but it needs to up it's game to get some good reviews and compete with the surrounding area.

The seafood is excellent, burgers and roast dinners. I had the Thai salmon which was superb and the following day chicken stroganoff. The lamb ragine is very good too. Good beer and wine selection, very good friendly service. Recommended,

The worst meal I have ever had in any restaurant. Chicken was pre cooked, dry. Korma was tasteless, my sons pizza was from a frozen base. The chef knows that he/she can mug people of with this standard of food as there is little choice in beautiful Croyde. However if he or she are going to mislead us they might as well use M&S; microwave meals to do so! The ladies serving were very pleasant and I felt bad for them. Absolutely gutted I went here and I can not understand how or why this place would get more than 1 star! Baffled

Pleasant staff and quick service. Looks nice from outside and 'bistro' name made me think it would be home cooked. However bland chilli, boil in bag rice, shop bought chips and I would guess microwaved ribs still in the shape of the tub they came out of. Not worth going out for. Will not be returning.

We have been coming to Croyde for over 30 years and a trip to Hobbs was a real treat. We called in for the early diner menu without a booking and were placed on a table next to a radiator as it was quite cool in there. Waitress was being trained but she was very pleasant. Opted to share a starter portion of half kilo of mussels and when they came they were good. Sadly after that the meal was disappointing. Chilli and rice was bland and the lasagne and bought chips were just very ordinary. Almost certainly microwaved. All in all I would say it was edible but no better than I can cook in my camper. Would I go again probably not. Will have to try harder if it wants to get back to the gods old days when a top notch meal was guaranteed.

We popped in after a walk on Sunday just after they opened at 6pm. Lovely attentive staff and a good varied menu. I had the roast lamb which hit the spot with great flavours and good portion size. The other half had the lamb tagine which was the best she had ever had and was a large plateful. We will definitely be back next time we are in Croyde. They also do a £10 main course special menu between 6pm and 7pm which looked fab value.

I booked this surpise 50th birthday meal weeks in advance after reading all the reviews on here how i wish i hadn't. I was promised the table would be decorated. There were a couple of glass's with 2 small pieces of cheap metalic ribbon not the usual tealight or a couple of fresh flowers. The menu was very poor, we took ages to choose because it all sounded so dull. I wished we'd chosen just starters because they sounded slightly more appetizing than the main meals on offer - but we felt guilty. We were the only people in the restaurant for our entire visit. A table of 8 has cancelled because of the weather- a lucky escape! The waitress blamed the weather for us being the only ones there, but it didn't effect other eateries in the area. We offered to leave so they could close up I wish we had - she said the chef was here now so we guilty stayed. We eventually chose the spare ribs. At £16.50 we expected it to be home made. It arrived on freezing cold plates. It was clearly out of a microwaved bag with cheap frozen chips and a little pot of BBQ sauce from out of jar. The only nice part was the salad and warm finger bowels which was Warmer than the fòod. It was disgusting and so so disappointing. We should have gone to Iceland and heated it up ourselves. I was hoping for a special 50th birthday meal but we couldn't wait to get out of the place. Very expensive mistake obviously the locals knew better and went to the other eateries in the area. I had so much hope for this special birthday meal but was so bitterly disappointed

Stayed here for 2 nights to attend a friends wedding in a resort 5 minutes walk up the road. When we arrived it was very busy with people eating in the pub/restaurant and there was no parking. Staff advised they had saved us a space and we moved the cones and got parked. Quickly checked in and shown to our room. The room was spacious and clean. Large bed with 2 single duvets, my only grumble was it was not great sleeping under 2 single duvets on the double bed. We asked staff about getting to the bed behind the hotel and booked a table for dinner bit later, they were really helpful. 20 minute walk up a very steep hill behind the hotel and down a steep cliff path, we were on the most stunning beach, we had a swim! We had the local rump steak and chips for dinner that night and it was delicious. Breakfast both mornings was included and was very nice indeed. Would recommend the food here. We enjoyed our stay here and very good location for attending our friends wedding at Watermouth Cove.

We stayed here last night and the night before but, was ruined by the fire alarm going off at 5am . Tried to call reception but no answer. We made our way to the front of the building. Nobody at all was present, no staff at all ! After 15 minutes standing outside the George (5am) a car pulled up and a lady got out. I asked her why there was no one on site her reply was well we are not far away. Apparently we were the only residents in the building. I find this all very disturbing. All we got was "Sorry about that " JUDY BOSTOCK
