The Harbour Shed Fish & Chips in North Devon

We loved the cod, the sausage and the chips. The batter was deliciously crispy and the peice of fish was huge! A great price too. You couldn't get better.

Website saying open until 8pm, went at 6.15 and was already shut!! Tables on chairs so not just shut either. So went to the other chippy which was great.

Food is cooked to order, so expect to wait. The cod and chips we had was absolutely fabulous! large portions seem to be the standard. Prices very sensible. Staff polite and friendly.

Having come here for fish and chips every couple of weeks these last few years and recommended it to friends and family, it makes me sad to write this. My son and I went in August and were served small, sad looking portions, nothing like what we were used to. Thinking it was a one-off due to it being a busy summer day, my husband and I went back today. Not only did I get a similar underwhelming meal, but it was made and served by a horrid, angry, rude man! There’s a much nicer place near the cliff railway, will be going there from now on.

Great fish and chips with mushies. Lovely batter, crisp and not oily. Would definitely recommend it.

Reasonable fried food but in our opinion not as good as the other fish and chip shop not far away. Eat in or take away. Everything closes early in Lynton/Lynmouth so be mindful

Had fish and chips was excellent crispy batter and freshly cooked def going again

not very good on previous visit, so thinking that was a one off incident I tried again and was disappointed at dried up very small portion of fish and chips. I only ploughed through it because I was faint with hunger. They do a decent drink of tea. Wish I had gone to my usual place the other end of Lynmouth for a larger, moist portion.

Just crap.went in with small dog 🐕 walked to outdoor area then went in to order,small fish was actually tiny chips pale and undercooked mushy peas were cold.Went inside to take the tray back and in front of other people the guy serving said get out the gate not through here he didn't say that before he'd had our money .

Dogs should NEVER be allowed inside anywhere that saves food !

Fast fresh food, and great service

Awful. Everything was hot held so hard and dry when we received fish and chips. Over £50 for 2 adults and 2 children to eat! The only good thing were the mac and cheese bites because they were freshly cooked.

What can we say? It’s beyond ridiculously bad. Waited ages to get around 17 various sizes white bait. £5.25 Just see the comparison pics to Esplanade which is about 20 meters away. We got these first, opened the box and voila! Most of it is gone?? That for £5.25??!! Thank God they said they had no Devon crab otherwise I think what we would have had would only be the shell! Lol So we went to Esplanade. For £5 we got about 5-6 times more. We bought 2 boxes. It was amazing! Fresh, generous portion. Satisfying. Friendly service. Totally recommend the Esplanade. Don’t bother with The Harbour Shed. How anyone can do that as a business is beyond me. Boxes are the same size by the way. Go to Esplanade. Wish I had read the other receivers.

Soggy chips with can of coke for £1.90 p ( the highest than any place in the country ) No toilet facilities

Don’t get me wrong, the customer service was exceptional, very friendly people. And the wait for the food was around five minutes. The food itself however was a different story. Four of us went to Lynmouth for the day, and for lunch looked for a place to eat, and we happened on this place first. It was a short wait to order food, though prices are a little steep. Two out of four of us ordered battered cod, one of those pieces were lovely, the other was like rubber. And it was a unanimous agreement that the chips were pretty awful. They tasted stale and most were hard on the inside as well as the outside. All in all not massively impressed with this place, a little disappointed actually.

We have arranged our day in Lynmouth around the Harbour shed - usually full enjoyment Unfortunately we arrived this afternoon to find the HS closed and seemingly closed for a private partner. No notice on the door just a long queue of folk waiting for service We returned home without a meal!!

I can recommend the chips here - proper English chips made from real potatoes!

Second time eating here the portions are very small. Large chips just seems to come in a large box it's about half full. Even though you get a buzzer to wait the food wasn't hot hot still warm though but could be better. I think it is expensive for what it is but understand the location it's not always going to be busy and need to cover costs but if it was really good quality wouldn't mind. Hopefully of I'm back in the village maybe 3rd like lucky, lastly though like other reviews chips need to be cooked for longer and a better supplier maybe lots of bad chips

Had takeaway large fish and large chips. Probably the poorest fish and chips I've had for many years and it wasn't cheap.

First time I’ve ever used this phrase, but genuinely the ‘best chips I’ve ever had’.

Visited the chip shop last year and my Dad was blown away with the Katsu curry sauce. He has been waiting all year to return! Was slightly worried to see that it had recently changed hands and had received some negative reviews. We decided to take a risk and go anyway and we were glad we went. Highly commend the food and service. Only recommendation would be that the dogs could sit in the inside eating area.

We ordered out and had burger with chips and chicken bits with chips. The burger was tasty, freshly prepared and very good. The chips were undercooked and soggy. The chicken was ok.

I was concerned that my partner’s hamburger looked undercooked. Sadly he ate it and was very poorly the next day. As we were only visiting Lynton for 3 nights this totally ruined our break. I wouldn’t recommend this takeaway.

The worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. The fish seems stale - it’s tough and tastes odd and the batter comes off the fish as if it were some sort of crust, all oil-soaked and disgusting. The chips are awful as well. Give it a wide berth if you value your tastebuds.

Dry overcooked fish and tasteless cardboard chips. We were all really disappointed. An old couple came in and asked for steamed fish which they said they couldn't do and when the couple had left, the staff were laughing at them. Not everyone can tolerate batter. Also the tables and c stools could do with a good scrub. On the positive side, the menu is entensive but just a shame it's tasteless. Wished we'd gone back to the Espladande around the corner.

Lovely location and nice outdoor seating. However fish was very dense and not very flavoursome, chips under cooked. Portion size on the smaller side.

The Harbour Shed Fish and Chips in Lynmouth is an absolute gem! Me and my boyfriend wanted Friday night fish and chips to eat by the sea! My boyfriend has a nut allergy, and we were thrilled to find that they are very accommodating and take allergies seriously. Despite arriving just after closing time, the wonderful staff went out of their way to serve us. The fish and chips were very tasty, crispy and fresh. Highly recommended!

Worst fish and chips I've ever had! We ordered haddock, but it tasted like river fish. The colour of the fish wasn't even white. I couldn't eat it, the flavour was awful. Even the dog wouldn't eat it! The portion size of the large chips was small, but since these tasted old and hard, we didn't finish these either. The vinegar (which wasn't real vinegar anyway, just vinegar flavoured liquid) tasted like it had been watered down. I would not recommend this place, unless all you are ordering is mushy peas, which were fine.

The place is in a perfect position, right on the front with inside & outside tables, plus it looks clean. We ordered our food & sat inside as the breeze was fairly strong outside. Within 5 minutes we were called to the counter & our food was ready. Good service. The food itself was plentiful & tasty & we both enjoyed it. The negative was a family on the next table, with their dog, which a lady had allowed to sit on her lap while they ate. She constantly fed it off the table & the staff didn’t say a word. I am a dog owner & I would never do this.

We had takeaway from here Friday night after travelling 6 hours. Chips were mushy and falljng apart fish did not look like previous photos. Beans were nicest part, highly disappointing 😔

This used to be my favourite chippy in Lynmouth. Definitely the best for fish but recently the opening hours have been irregular. Also the online ordering has stopped working.

On arrival we ordered and payed, 1 and a quarter hours later no food through out it was busy and the bloke frying kept saying we only took over yesterday so we waited watching peoples orders being wrong in the end we went back to the counter to to be told they have no receipt for our food but we were sat there with a buzzer for when the food was going to be ready we kindly asked for a refund and went somewhere else poor service I’d avoid if your Hungary because theer were others waiting other an hour.

Went for a meal as we went 3 years ago and was ok ,this time absolutely rubbish,high prices and terrible! Very small portions ,fish fried until dry but expensive even charged for condiments!!avoid at all costs !looked like a real chippy with all the “frontage” but abominable!!must have been bought in definitely not battered fish on the premises!!awful!!!!

Great location- able to eat inside so seagulls didn’t get free lunch. The person serving was lovely and friendly and we liked the idea of the buzzer device which went off when our order was ready. Our order was put in a takeaway bag (I had already said it was to eat in), when I collected the order they had forgotten my chips and husband had to ask twice for his order. It was a shame because it’s a lovely place and another time probably no issues - heard the lady saying only opened yesterday so maybe just ‘teething issues’ today.

I have to say they were the best fish and chips I have had in a long time. Friendly staff, too.

Unfortunately they were out of stock of the one veggie option on the menu. The chips were really soggy, not one was crispy in the whole box. On the complete flip side, the onion rings were sensational! Also not the friendliest staff in all honesty.

The second worst fish and chips we've ever had. Dry tasteless scrappy chips. The fish was so thin, and the batter was dark brown it was so overcooked. It was a struggle to try and scrape the measly bit of fish off the unedible batter. I doubt I managed two mouthfuls! Binned the rest It's a fish and chip shop, that's what they cook day in day out, so how can they get it so wrong?

Visited The Harbour Shed a couple of weeks ago whilst in Lynmouth and what a great place. The food was fantastic...the fish & chips were the best I've had in a long time and the wife said her pasty was the best she'd ever tasted! A warm, sunny Sunday meant we could sit outside, which was where I found my only gripe...the picnic benches were a little on the low side for my ageing legs after a stroll down from the Blue Ball Inn, via Watersmeet. The staff were friendly and the food was ready pretty quickly on a busy day, so all in all, The Harbour Shed comes highly recommended and we will definitely be visiting again when in the area.

The place was recommended to us, so we thought let's try it ourselves! First impressions are good. The place is clean, the menu is visible right at the entrance of the takeaway area and prices seem fairly reasonable. We only wanted 2 large chips for £9.90 With a small queue of 3 people in front of us it wouldn't take very long we thought. Nearly 15 minutes later before we could order. The lady at the till was friendly and quick with taken our order. Within a few minutes we did get our chips in 2 separate boxes. We did buy ketchup and mayo separately for £0.35 each. The food was hot but there wasn't a lot of it. Unfortunately the chips didn't have much flavour, not fluffy and no crunch on the outside. It wouldn't be our first choice to go back to but we hope this is just a one of.

Rude customer service and won’t be coming again. Every shop in the village seemed to have run out of water, so we simply asked politely if we could fill up our water bottles with tap water. The guy behind the till didn’t know what to say but seemed to say how they were about to tidy up and close. I asked if he was still service fish and chips, and he said yes? Which I thought was disgusting how you could serve us food but not even fill up our bottles for us, especially as a pregnant lady who was desperate for some tap water. We instead went to the fish and chip shop further around the corner to the right, facing out to see where we spent £20, had all our bottles filled up and had great customer service. Thanks for sending us to the better fish and chip shop! :)

Super fish & chips. Reasonably priced, good sized portions and the slice of lemon on top was a nice finish. It was also fantastic that we could sit inside with a dog.

Had 2 take away meals from here on 2 separate nights while we were staying in lynmouth..all cooked fresh lovely food friendly staff will definitely be coming back here in September

I opened my regular size cod and chips up, sat ontop of my cod is a thick, black, curly hair about an inch or two long, either a pubic hair or facial hair.

Our favourite place to stop and have food on our way down to Devon. It would be nice if the seating area stayed open whilst the shop is open. Great food and friendly staff.

I have now visited the Harbour shed on two occasions all in all a good fish and chip shop in a modern well appointed premises with friendly helpful attentive professional staff.This is definitely my first choice for aish and chip shop in lynmouth reasonable prices and good portion sizes

We got fish and chips from here because the other fish shop was closed It was awful it was greasy and the oil had a very strange taste the fish was tasteless we asked for haddock Wich we have eaten many a time and this fish did not taste of haddock and had a very weird flavour We won't be returning it was the worst fish we have ever had

Called in here as prices seemed slightly cheaper .ordered small fish and chips. Seeing food go past it all looked lovely fresh batter and cooked well. Ours was lovely golden batter and nice tasting oil . Service was very quick and didn't wait long .nicely presented and tho thought a bit pricey . Portions were adequate and enough for lunch . Charge of 35 p for any sauces needed .think w as a.Bit steep most don't usually charge. But was very nice .standards are obviously high .

We had take away on Saturday 4th November 2023, 2 haddock with chips and 2 cod with chips, some of the chips were not cooked properly and hard, the fish was horrid and 3 of us could not eat it, never again.

Delicious! I had GF battered sausage. The best! Really lovely takeaway. And didn't feel too greasy after the batter.

Friendly staff but fish was absolutely dreadful. The batter was so tough it felt like it was going to break your teeth. Almost inedible. Felt like it had been reheated but I have no evidence of that. High hopes, spotlessly clean restaurant, friendly staff. The chips were lovely. Did not eat in.

What an absolute treat! I suffer from Coeliac and I didnt just have GF fish and chips, I had the best GF fish and chips I have ever tasted. The staff were friendly and helpful and the seating area was basic but comfortable. I throughly recommend this place if you are in the area. You will not be disappointed!

The best fish and chips I've had in years. We had the dog with us who is a big boy, but he had plenty of space to sit with us while we ate. It was clean and tidy and the chap working was lovely.

We have spent a week in Cornwall and happened upon Lynton by chance. It was our first fish and chips of the week are were not disappointed. The batter was exemplary and freshly cooked chips were delicious. Staff extremely courteous and was an outstanding experience all round.

We were really looking forward to this and decided to eat in. We waited a while for the food but as everything is cooked to order we didn’t mind. Between us we had cod, haddock and hake. The batter was rock hard on all and even broke a wooden fork. And the fish inside (which was very thin) was dry and bitty rather than big soft flakes . Clearly overcooked. The hake didn’t taste too fresh either and I couldn’t eat it. Hugely disappointing. The chips and sides were really good though! We didn’t raise this at the time as the two experiences we’d had just before tasting the food didn’t fill us with much confidence. Firstly, both doors at each end of the chippy were open. It had been a blustery and wet day and 2 of our party were in their 80s. It was really drafty so we asked if we could shut the door next to us. We were told no as it gets too hot behind the counter. Surely the door could have been closed temporarily for an elderly customers comfort? Secondly, the child’s meal came in a deep box (like happy meal) and our little girl couldn’t even see into the box let alone eat from it. We explained the situation and asked for a cardboard tray (like the adults meals came in). We got told to rip open the box which we had already done but seeing as she wanted to pour her gravy over it would have ended up on the table. So we asked for the tray and was told we’d have to pay 30p for it! We’d just spent over £50 there and they had the gall to charge for a flimsy cardboard tray so that our little girl could eat her meal. Overall poor food and service. Won’t be returning.

By far the worst cod I have ever had. Stiff as a board. Batter over cooked and absolutely dripping in cooking oil. I was offered another piece but one mouthful had turned my stomach and wasn’t offered a refund. Wish I had gone to the other chip shop.

I can honestly say the fish and chip here are consistently fantastic. Cod,Haddock or the Hake is amazing. The batter is the crispest you will ever find and never soggy. The chips are also right up there. Having eaten at Rick Stiens take away in Padstow on many occasions. This chippy is on equal par. The fish is always cooked to order 10/10 every time

Chips were nice, but the fish was over cooked and quite hard work.

As we walked past this shop, I noticed that this shop cooked their chips in veg oil but unfortunately, they cooked their fish in the same oil as the meat products eliminating any chance of having fish with the chips. I did go for the middle size portion of chips which ended up looking quite lost in the size of the box given (should have taken a picture). The chips themselves we cooked fine freshly out and crisp better than the ones that I got after returning home to Huddersfield.

Rude staff. Overpriced. Driest chicken nuggets to ever exist. Woman behind the counter was vile. Avoid. Go to the Esplanade chippy down the road instead.

The place has decent fish and chips with some other dishes available. It was not the best but as I said its decent. I had chicken fillet burger where the bun was not toasted and the chicken fillet was dry. May be other dishes might be good but not the best experience I had.

Had two fish and chip meals tonight. The batter on the fish was so overcooked it was unedible. It was actually burnt The chips were very pale and uncooked with two teas cost nearly £28 and it ended up in the black bags that are for rubbish

Lovely place along the water serving great fish and chips! Some tartar sauce (and extra lemon) would’ve taken it up a notch, but as I didn’t see any sauces on the menu, I’m guessing it’s just salt and vinegar?

The best fish and chips. I had the small person which was just the perfect size for lunch. The chips were cooked well and were crispy. But the fish really was absolutely delicious. Cooked to the perfect level of crispness. As white as snow. Not greasy at all. Never do I manage to eat the whole portion. No waste today. Told staff and they let me into the secret ingredient . Recommend that you try them .

Friendly staff , lovely setting to eat out in the garden area , perfectly cooked Fish and Chips , Hubby had Cod , I had Haddock , both in lovely crispy batter , generous portion for medium, the large portions must be Moby Dick sized! Highly recommended and we will return on our next visit .

This “fish and chip shop” doesn’t even deserve 1 star. I ordered the chicken burger as the photo looked nice on their board, however what was “cooked” did not resemble the photo at all! Sticky floors and dirty table . The food was awful especially the chips plus extremely expensive. Last but certainly not least.. the woman who served us had a massive attitude. Do not bother going in there your wasting your time.

Only managed to eat here twice in the 4 days we were down this time 😂 staff friendly, great decor, extensive menu. Their fish is fresh, tasty and cooked perfectly. Chips amazing, burger, chicken fillet burger and everything else are amazing too. Always struggle to choose! The mozzarella parcels and mac and cheese bites are the best I've had.

Excellent cod in seriously crispy batter and great chips, friendly staff and a garden to eat them in. Had the regular size and that was huge!

I’m intolerant to gluten and dairy and their menu was almost completely both gluten and dairy free! I had the cod bites and chips and the fish was so light and fresh. The staff were lovely and very helpful with my allergens and it has outdoor seating with a view of the harbour - oh, and they’re dog friendly!! The only downside is that they’re not closer to home! Thank you for amazing service and delicious food
