Hip & Pistol in North Devon

Am so pleased that the Hip has had their refit, so comfortable for a great evening meal but they are still doing their breakfasts on a Saturday too. The menu is lovely, garlic prawns scrumptious.

Lovely place with very nice interior decor. The breakfast was very nice and extremely reasonable. The staff were lovely and very efficient. Highly recommend.

We used the Hip&pistol for breakfast, and dinner on a couple of occasions and was always treated very well by the staff, actually we cldnt fault them. Menu was good, and had a good specials board too, food was cooked well and tasty, good choice of beverages both non and alcoholic, Prices were very good gor food a drink. A tad small on the inside but plenty of outside seating. Would definitely recommend going here.

We stopped in late afternoon due to rain and we liked the place so much we stayed for dinner. Great atmosphere and service, great selection of drinks and a really good menu. Food and drinks were fairly priced and good value for money. I had a sirloin which was cooked exactly as I asked for. I really enjoyed our experience at the hip and would love to come back again

Friendly atmosphere, good sized outdoor seating area, reasonable prices on drinks and food. We had rare steak and chips, both meals were cooked and seasoned perfectly, and were good sized portions. Would visit again

Had the van helsing burger special the other night and my partner had Le Hip Mac. Tonight I had a takeaway steak baguette chips and asked for chilli sauce which the chef happily provided. Food on both occasions was out of this world and freshly cooked and the chilli sauce I had with my baguette was clearly home made and non of this vinegar tasting batch bought jar stuff. With Le Hip Mac again this sauce was home made also and the burgers on that occasion were juicy, not dry but very flavoursome. All in all an amazing meal whether it be take away or eat in I will continue to go again and again for this quality of food and highly recommend to anyone who is going to visit. Well, what can I say! The family came to Ilfracombe on the Waverley from Porthcawl on Wednesday. We stopped at The Hip & Pistol for lunch and it was SUPERB. The food was delicious, the service was fantastic, and the atmosphere was second to none. What a fabulous venue - we hope to return next year . Thank you so much for making our day special.

Really enjoyed our visit here, had food and drinks. Had a few lighter bites which were all great, recommend the KFC style chicken and cauliflower both were so tasty, great homemade sauces also. They even had sun cream to share as it was finally sunny in the UK, the staff along with landlord were so friendly really welcoming. Well worth popping in for food or a drink or both

Saw that the menu had loads of Vegan options so nipped for lunch and a couple of pints. What a fantastic place - barman was chatty and friendly and the decor is fascinating. The menu, both for meat eaters and Vegans alike is great - The fake steak baguette was excellent and Cauliflower bites were delicious. Will definitely be back here next time in North Devon

Name changed to Hip&no8. The menu and specials are even better. We had the sea bass with crushed potatoes with spinach asparagus and a saffron cream and cockle sauce. I had the pork ribs bbq sauce, sweetcorn coleslaw and spiced potato wedges. Portion of ribs were large. Have had the hip’s breakfasts these are equally large and delicious. Pub does vegan and veggie meals. So something for everyone. Breakfasts and meal are fantastic value. The hip does a great selection of beers, lager and ciders.

We stopped here for a spot of lunch while visiting Ilfracombe and we are glad we did. It’s so friendly, great staff and landlord and fast service with a lovely atmosphere here. As vegetarians it is sometimes difficult to get something different to eat but there was a good selection of vegetarian and vegan meals here. I went for the fake steak baguette. This was truly amazing, the fake steak tasted fantastic with lovely texture and along with this plenty of mushrooms and topped with cheese. I absolutely enjoyed this. Portions were on the generous side and I struggled to eat it but I refused to be beaten. My wife had the fish burger with a generous portion again of chips. The meals were very reasonably priced which was also great. The atmosphere was great and although not many people in there at the time, it still felt like it was buzzing here. Well recommended here and we will return when we visit Ilfracombe again.

Went here for our Grandson’s birthday breakfast to start the day and it was perfect. Nic was on top form, his craic and sense of fun are infectious and he couldn’t do enough for us.The food was spot on and served to us really quickly which was brilliant. Thanks to all of the guys for everything they did to start the day well for us.

The Hip @ Number 8 has just served 4 of us the most wonderful Sunday roast. Excellent. Excellent beer, wine etc. So well priced. Well served. All so good. Go along and be amazed. Nick and his staff are amazing

Went in for a drink and what an absolute pleasure .The way it’s been fashioned is outstanding The floor is so unique and like a map of Jack Sparrow’s Treasure Map as well as the tables . The bar/ waiting on staff and the owner couldn’t have been any nicer .Daisy looked after us and Nick the owner is such a nice fella . We were visiting Ilfracombe and were trying to find somewhere reasonable to eat and this was perfect. They helpfully had the menus outside which was great. The staff were lovely, the food was great, so reasonably priced. Arrived very quickly and you get plenty. Would definitely visit again!

We were looking for lunch and saw the menu outside of this place and decided to go in. There's loads of outdoor seating but we ate inside in the pub. The food was reasonably priced and arrived piping hot. We had a sausage sandwich and dirty fries with beef brisket which were incredibly tasty. The music inside was a touch loud for a couple of us but we're probably a little older than the target market 🙂 The staff were welcoming and friendly and we'd definitely go back!

Best value food in Ilfracombe. Had 2 terrific meals in here, found it excellent.Can be a little bit rowdy, Especially on a Friday. But please don't let that. Put you off. The bar staff are incredibly hard-working. And you get served very quick Regardless of how busy the bar looks. Very friendly place

A great sports orientated bar, it's had a slight rename "The Hip @ No 8" The landlord is bang on to challenge under age drinking and runs a great kitchen and pub

Highly recommended for coeliacs - on visiting the Hip & Pistol I was very reassured by their careful approach towards preparing strictly gluten free food and felt completely safe eating there. The food was plentiful and tasty and service was friendly and quick.

Absolutely great staff and great food. We have spent our entire long weekend in this pub on a rugby tour to Ilfracombe. They made us so welcome and you cannot ask for a better owner. So thank you again to all the staff.

Spent a hour walking around Ilfracoombe looking for an evening meal. Nearly everything was closed then stumbled on this place and were instantly felt welcome. Good food. Well priced and the governor sorted out a cab home. Go there. You will not be disappointed.

Warm and welcoming pub. Was only stopping for a drink but decided to eat. Steaks, mixed grill and Big Mac burger absolutely beautifully cooked and presented. Hot, fresh well cooked, delicious food. Highly recommend. Will definitely visit again next time we visit Ilfracombe.

Had lunch in here. Friendly staff and looked quite nice from the outside. Got seated at a table outside (at our request) but tables were sticky and grubby which put us off, then moved inside which was better but unfortunately the food was shoved together and needed some TLC, reminded us of a school packed lunch! A bit hidden away but a good spot for lunch in the September sunshine. We had the Tuna baguette and Tuna wrap, they were well presented with lots of filling and a proper side salad!

4 night stay in Ilfracombe, everywhere fully booked until October. Don’t worry, pop in here. Fast service inside and out, drinks are good and reasonably priced. Don’t let the simple menu fool you. The food is excellent, good portion sizes, full of flavour- 10/10!Ate here 3 nights out of four. The other night was a large chain outlet mistake!!

Last night of our holiday, couldn't get in anywhere for food, even the wetherspoon across the street, this place had a lot of space, so there's the clue. Frozen food that was reheated, poor, greasy, dirty table. Scampi bitten into and water came out. Won't make that mistake again.

Menu was very limited but what they had was delicious. Think drinks were expensive and you had to pay as soon as you ordered. We didn't see an actually bill. After we got home we realised we had paid quite alot for what we had. Can only think the drinks were expensive as the food wasn't.

We visited the Hip & Pistol on Wednesday during a visit to ilfracombe. All of us were starving after a busy day and ordered jacket potato with chilli and a jacket with tuna, with some drinks. We paid upon ordering. Our drinks were quickly poured and brought over to our table, under the scaffold roof terrace outside. Good start. One of our group asked for a straw for their drink, to which the waitress replied “we don’t do straws” and walked off shaking the spilt drink from the tray on the floor. Next up the food. The chef brought out our food along with some sauce and cutlery. It would have been a nice touch but with a dried in dirty ‘white’ uniform it wasn’t the most reassuring. Customer service also lacked a little, as he didn’t ask if we needed anything else and just proceeded to walk off. We then started to tuck in to our food. From the outset, a large jacket potato with a good amount of filling and side salad. However, it quickly went downhill. The jacket potato was dry, no butter (none offered either and no staff to even ask) and the chilli was really poor. Greasy, tasteless and fatty mince and just some kidney beans - a lot missing from a normal ‘chilli’. Almost like it has just been defrosted and some kidney beans thrown in. We had literally just put our knives and forkes down when the ‘chef’ then reappeared, collected the plates and walked off. No mention of the food, hoping everything was okay, could they get us anything else, deserts?, drinks? etc. Not until we checked trip advisor after that we found people had a similar experience.

Only popped in for beers as this place is in the Good Beer Guide. However, there were only two on handpump and a third on keg. The first two were pretty average to be honest. Won't be going again for beer. Service was friendly enough though.

Called here at 6.30pm peak season. Table available in the garden in a nice sunny spot. Very clean. Service was extremely quick and the staff very friendly. Food was served hot and fairly large portions. A barrel of water to refill dog bowls is on hand which is useful. Not a posh place but a pleasant, friendly atmosphere and enjoyable meal.

Wasn't the best. Chilli no flavour very greasy cheap mince. Mash and sausage. Sausages hard and over cooked Ham eggs ham look as if was straight out of supermarket. Wouldn't recommend

Spent a Friday afternoon in this vibrant no frills pub selling good basic pub food and cider at sensible prices. Would recommend

No room to have a meal outside. The waiting on staff couldn't fault kind and curtious. However food was below standard. Sitting inside very loud and rough. Didn't enjoy it at all. Won't be back.

We visited here as it was always busy every time we walked by plus there was an outside eating area. The menu was ok -nothing fancy just pub food such as burgers, sausages, steak pie etc. The food came quickly and the steak pie was tasty and a decent size portion, but the fries/peas were average. As they were busy it was quite a wait to order drinks and food and had to ask for the dirty table to be wiped down.

Amazing, we had hotdogs with poppers and fried, there was load of food 😋 the signs in the toilet and the over all decor was just fantastic. Can't wait for the next trip

We really enjoyed visiting the hip & pistol, the owner was really friendly as was the bar staff the night before! Felt really well organised with covid precautions! (Very well thought out, we've even taken ideas back to our local!!) Prices round here are also an added bonus!

Been the hip and Pistols on many occasions and found that staff was very helpful friendly and happy and a good selection of drinks hot or cold Nic & Val are a credit to the hospitality industry I would go out the way to help you. It was covid-19 friendly and felt safe. And no doubt the both of us will visit again soon.

Was recommended by the owner of the B&B we stayed at so decided to pop in here for lunch with my partner and grandparents. Upon arrival we were looking at the menu outside and the lady came straight over to greet us. We sat outside as it was a nice day and they took our order promptly. We all had sandwiches which were very enjoyable and had an overall really good experience here. We would definitely visit again

Having just been turned away from the admiral Collingwood because of their lack of understanding of the new rules we happend upon this gem of a pub. They were happy to accommodate us and take the rules seriously. Food was exceptional and service really quick and friendly. Highly recommend!

Stopped off for lunch here on a very hot day. The menu was limited to mainly sandwiches and baked potatoes. The sandwiches were all very tasty and filling. The staff were all brilliant and compared to other places we were very impressed with how they are coping with covid. The gentleman was seating people where he could on a busy Monday and if a table came free with a parasol he was asking if people wanted to move, this making more work for himself all this done with a smile. I watched the cleaning being done to seats as well as tables (not many places seem to do seats) Definitely recommend!

Brilliant! Really well organised and well considered. Customer safety at the forefront. Staff were brilliantly helpful and friendly service was fab and food was great.

We came one lunch time and where shown to a table but before we could sit down we where shouted at by an angry tattooed member of staff (possibly the owner?) saying "oi don't sit down until I've wiped that!!" We all laughed as we thought it was a joke that a member of staff could be so rude but this carried on for the whole stay. The table we sat on was outside in the front garden and we must have been near the bins as the garden absolutely stank of hot sweaty rubbish! The angry waitress was actually quite amusing to watch as she never once smiled and was bossing all the staff around and she clearly hates all customers and definitely forgot she wouldn't have a job without the customers paying for their 'service'.This place will benefit from staff training in customer service and a repositioning of where they keep the stinking bin bags

We visited yesterday for lunch and were very impressed. Great service and the food was delicious. We sat in the lovely garden with our dog who was given a bowl of water on arrival, always nice to find places that are dog friendly. Hope to visit again in the future.

We stopped off here for lunch, managed to sit outside between showers with a brolly in case it rained, We had a mixture of jacket potatoes and baguettes which were all very nice. The staff were great and although it says that dogs are not allowed inside they were letting them in as the weather was so rubbish.

We had an lovely lunch here. The jacket potatoes and baguettes were very nice and large portions too. The staff took social distancing very seriously and we saw all seating thorough sanitised between use. We would definitely eat here again.

We ate here last week on a lovely hot day. Initially I was a bit disappointed they were not partaking in Eat Out to Help Out, but the food was so nice it was well worth the money. We had the jacket potatoes and wraps, and my son’s allergies were catered for with ease. The salad was fresh and tasty and the portions were very generous! Staff wore visors and social distancing was in place, even outside. Toilets were clean and it was a lovely meal. I’d recommend a visit here
