Water- scam? As I sat down for a coffee with my husband, mineral water with pretty glasses, ice and lemon were placed in front of us. Wow- amazing service, I thought . But, on examining the menu, my suspicions were alerted as I suddenly realised we would be paying £6.40 for something we hadn’t asked for. The waitress confirmed we would be charged and would we like tap water. Suddenly , the beautiful iced lemon mirage was whisked away and tap water, minus ice and lemon, replaced it. It kind of felt like we’d been demoted to economy, from first class, but without being given a choice in the first place! I then began to wonder if this was a subtle way of getting customers to pay more as some would be too embarrassed to reject the beautiful water and say no. I even saw a young couple clutching half drunk bottles of water as they left ( okay slight exaggeration on the ‘clutching’ ) but I did wonder if they’d been duped as well. Jack and Alice say they are ‘humble and slightly nostalgic’ and that they ‘care about the guests [they] serve’. Really? Well if this is the truth, then please have the courtesy to ask before serving over- priced plastic bottles of mineral water!

Great little place for a casual meal. Food was freshly prepared and served with a smile. We'll be back.

Very basic and average food, a very small cocktail costs £10 but lacks flavour or taste. Bit disappointing to be honest!

Great cafe. Had lunch and coffee & cake while working on iPad. Very happy here. Maybe the coleslaw was a little bland, but everything else was super.

So went there yesterday evening for a casual meal. Pros - Great location and vibe. Areas that need improving - The hostess demeanour was rather cold. A smile at the customer goes a long way. I gave her the benefit of perhaps being a long day however reading the reviews below, it seems consistent with others too. Ordered Moroccan Mint tea and Lamb Cutlets. Whilst the tea was ok, the lamb cutlets were shockingly bad. Besides being extremely poor cuts of the meat, you would be hard pressed to eat them. I somehow managed to nibble at 2/3 cutlets but couldn’t fathom the 3rd one. Sent it back and it came back exactly the same. Figured it just wasn’t going to be any better and left it at that

Literally a café that sells beer, but costs you an arm and a leg. £6.35 for a pint of ale. Central London prices for a small town. I live in Bucks and the same pint would be two thirds of the price down my local, so that can't be the excuse! The pint wasn't even that nice either nor were they serving any food to help wash it down. All the customers were 60+ so the atmosphere was dead, which is understandable as you'd reach retirement before you got the bill. Proximity is to the train station is it's only redemption!

We have just been for Sunday brunch and really enjoyed it. It was lovely to see it busy with a great atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and the service was excellent throughout. We ordered Jacks big breakfast and smashed avocado with poached egg on toast along with smoothies which were freshly made. The food and drinks were delicious. We will definitely be coming back.

Service is lovely! Had a cup of tea and a coffee and walnut cake here. Tea was tea but the cake was dry and not great. Won’t be coming back. Had a bit of a funny tummy after

Lovely independent eaterie, nice selection of dishes and cocktails! We had a late booking today and they accommodated 4 of us for lunch. Pancakes with mixed Berry's and Greek meze is amazing!

What a shame this place has really gone down hill :( not friendly at the door, portion sizes are like starters, only chips as potato option, v expensive for what you get, crashing glasses around at the bar and slamming the fire exit door about 3 times not an enjoyable meal maybe ok for a quick drink but would def not eat in there again such a shame as a great place before or after the cinema.

Disappointed. Food was mediocre. Good portion sizes though. Waited about 15-20 mins to be asked for a drink and then was not approached the entire time we were there to ask for a top up. Food took about 45 mins to arrive to the table.

Great place for brunch with friends. Friendly and efficient service. Buzzy atmosphere, good Bloody Marys and lots of interesting and tasty food choices. A 2nd visit more recently for a late lunch was also very enjoyable, quieter but still a warm atmosphere, good food & beer.

Valentine’s Day. The scenery was nice and busy. We ordered the fish cake and prawns to start which set our standards high, these were very good especially the fish cake! Disappointingly, our mains were not nice. I had the mussels and my partner got the chicken Milanese dish. The chicken was very dry and the pasta seemed microwaved. And the mussels were bad, and the sauce wasn’t very good. We finished with the chocolate fondue which was a nice ending. The service was good at the beginning, but declined by the end of the evening- we were waiting a while for cutlery for our already delivered food, drinks order etc. I would give it a 6/10, not sure if I would return.

Brunch is good here but the evening meals are bland, I've tried evening meals here twice now and it's just disappointing. I had some steak sandwich which had unseasoned steak and sweated out onions, sandwiched in some lifeless bread. Service was good and the drinks are excellent. Would come here for brunch and drinks

Really slow service, we had to wait 25 minutes for our first drinks to arrive. We were even asked twice within this time if we'd like to order some drinks. Don't go there if you're short on time.

Confidently cute, capable and multifunctional cafe/bistro with plenty of variety. Favourably flexible wine menu has several options by glass and carafe. Quite miraculous how the open kitchen extractors cope with Burger Wednesdays!

The atmosphere was amazing the soup was delicious and came super quick. The chef memorised our order without writing it down. Everyone was kind. I enjoyed the hash browns. And and Becca was lovely. Alba and Arya D

A great place to catch up with your friends. There is a Tapas menu also a bar menu ie burgers and chips. A selection of beers and good section of wines and cocktails. Tea and coffee. A warm and friendly atmosphere. Lovely staff.

Sadly, I feel the chef wanted to go home, we were the last order, he rushed, the centre of the chicken was uncooked (no core temp measurement being used!). While I would try this place again (and avoid the chicken), my partner never wants to go back again and she used this quite place often. Nice eclectic place, but I advise going early, or checking your dish before diving in.

Food was great and reasonably priced. Cocktails very good. They had a live singer, Kuran Dohil-Lynch, who was phenomenal!

I moved out of Buckinghamshire a while ago and I miss this place a lot. It was one of my favourite places to go to for brunch and a coffee.

Always a great stop before going to see a film in the Everyman. Super food and great service. Mini hamburgers were... well... mini so maybe need something extra too.

Had breakfast here this morning and immediately booked to come back tomorrow. The staff were really welcoming and helpful and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. Lovely atmosphere, service and surroundings xx

I visited Jack and Alice last week and it was one of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had! The staff were extremely attentive and the food was absolutely delicious! I will definitely be returning!

Didn't get to try the food as the waitress was more interested in just getting money, rather than listening where customers would have liked to sit. There were tables available, but we were not allowed to choose, although we came for reserved time first. Ridiculous service, so we had to leave.

Sadly this place does not accept dogs, which is unfortunate considering the very helpful Huddle round the corner does.

Ordered soup as vegan (double checked with waiter) and wanted something light. Very limited vegan options. Soup was ok, came with sourdough bread and DAIRY butter! Asked if butter could be swapped for a vegan spread (such as flora) was told they didn’t have it. Friend ordered eggs and specified no Hollandaise, when it arrived complete with the sauce the waiter argued that ‘it comes with the sauce’ and even tried to say that my friend didn’t specify - I had sat there and listened to her ask clearly for what she wanted. I have been here before and had a much better experience, either the waiter was having a bad day or simply doesn’t listen to the customers. Shame as we now won’t be returning or recommending.

Food was good. Staff nice and pleasant. Booked dinner Friday night. Came to us at 8.50 pm and told us we could not order any more food. Kitchen was closed as chef had been working since morning. No warning. We had to argue and explain we were hungry.

I visited Jack and Alice for the first time on Saturday evening and had a wonderful experience. The food and atmosphere are a 10 for me, but the stand out feature was the beautiful relationships between the staff members - it truly gives the place a unique warm buzz . Love it here. Often go for lunch. Service is always cheerful and the food is so tasty. My partner and I have been meaning to go for dinner here too as it’s so good. But overall a great loco and within minutes of the train station. Food lush and staff could not be more helpful. Always enjoy our visits.

A nice spot with very friendly staff. The menu has a nice variety compared to the first time I visited over a year ago. I had the steak sandwich but was underwhelmed with the size, it was like half the sandwich was missing. What was there tasted good. Wasn’t happy about having to pay for a cup of hot water but overall a pleasant lunch.

Asked if I could change poached eggs for Fried and the manager was hesitant to ask the chef if that would be possible. Waited 20’mins for sweeteners to arrive. Veggie brunch - eggs were over cooked vs soft as I had ordered. Hash browns over fried and just fell apart - all you could taste was oil. Mushrooms were soggy and halloumi was barely cooked. All in all disappointing service and food for the price you pay. Bearing in mind fego is 2 minutes away and for the same price - you get better quality food and far surperior service. It’s a shame

We had only coffee and croissant and toast for breakfast. We must say service is never great since we have to try so hard to get the staff's attention. They spend more time chatting among themselves bar near the till and coffee machine. The place is very noisy, difficult to have a chat. We have been very disappointed since they automatically added 12.5% service charge. We feel that it should be left to the customer to decide, especially for a cafe.

Amazing, ordered the gluten free chicken schnitzel and fries. I'm Coeliac and they had no issues catering for me. Home made gluten free Victoria sponge went down a treat with a cuppa. Finally service was amazing and staff are so friendly and helpful!

I absolutely love this place. Have visited on numerous occasions for breakfast, brunch and lunch and the food and service have been of the highest standard on all occasions. Often best to book in advance for busier periods but staff have been good at fitting us in when it does look full. Smoothie menu is also great and worth sampling. Would highly recommend a visit. Parking is generally available on the adjacent Street but if there are no spaces then there is a pay and park car park across from Waitrose just a short walk away.

Always so welcoming here. The owner is very hands on and the staff are friendly and attentive. Perfect for socials but also private enough with roomy tables/booths to do business meetings. Great food and coffee. Thank you!

DISAPPOINTING customer service. Unprofessional waitress and cynical manager. I specifically ordered sweet potato fries with my plate and was given normal fries. I politely mentioned this to the waitress who then said that it would take too much work and time to change the fries and brushed my comment off without even apologising. Then, a few minutes later, the table beside us received the correct fries and I told the waitress that she had merely been unprofessional. She then complained to her manager who cynically asked me if I wanted the sweet potato fries WHILST I had already started paying. He then proceeded to comment on how I should not have ‘talked to the waitress like that’ when all I did was comment about her poor service. Overall I am heavily disappointed after hearing many good things about the place.

Best place to eat !!! I absolutely love jack and alice - the staff are super friendly and kind and really are accommodating to dietary requirements ( I’m celiac with a nut allergy) and I pretty much eat what ever I like from mains and desserts ! The vibe in the place is out of this world and it’s hands down my top place to go ! Highly recommend for all !

Nice place for a catch up and some good quality coffee

A group of ladies together for a catch up. Food was excellent and enjoyed by all. However, service was very slow, meals did not come out together and food was left to go cold whilst we waited for everyone to be served. When we asked how long food was going to be, the response was unhelpful and an example of poor service - left my friend feeling very uncomfortable. And our waitress was just sullen - looked like she wanted to be anywhere else but in the job! The saving grace was the general manager who gave us our bill at the end of the lunch. I gave her feedback on the poor service, which she received gratefully - I work on the basis that of you don't know then you can't do anything about it. I hope things improve because the food really was very good.

Everytime we go to Jack and Alice's its great, the staff are always all welcoming and helpful, the food is first class, high quality, the portion sizes are just enough it actually feels like you've had a meal. Well done guys please don't change a thing you've got it just perfect 👍

I ordered a take away. Whether the system was glitching or what I didn’t receive I confirmation email until the time it was supposed to be picked so I didn’t know if it had gone through. When I went to pick it up I went to the hatch and pressed the button. A lady walked past and I assumed she hadn’t noticed so I pressed the button again. She walked past again so I knocked on the window and she still ignored me so I walked in where the staff were rather cold and judging. The food was okay they do good burgers but the chips were rather soggy. Much nicer places with nicer staff to get take aways from.

Asked to leave despite ordering a full meal and coffee after an hour because there were other bookings and I was by myself. Disappointing ...
