Hennighans Top Shop in Powys

The food we had from this brilliant chip shop was fabulous. The fish was cooked to almost perfection, with a crisp batter and lovely tasting and flakey white haddock fillet. I can happily say that the pea fritter I had was one of the best I've had. Thick crunchy batter and gorgeous mushy pea filling. The last time I brought food from this chippy, I rated the food and service I received average at best due to miss-communication between myself and the staff. However, this time, the food/service has definitely improved.

Worst chips I've ever had the misfortune to buy. Very dry, as if they were from the oven. The price was also expensive I thought. Wish I'd gone somewhere else but was travelling through and there was a parking space outside.

Should have won the best fish and chip shop in the UK, Food is always top quality freshly cooked absolutely perfect.

Couldn’t decide on Friday take out and so pleased we chose chippy. We both had cod and chips with a side of mushy peas and gravy. The chips were split on; hot and well cooked with enough crisp, and the fish was excellent. Gravy and peas excellent too

Very good place to stop for food. Option to takeaway or sit in and eat. The dining area is comfortable and clean, service was excellent. Nice clean loos too! Stopped in for food after a motorbike ride through mid Wales. The menu is varied, very reasonably priced. I went for the scampi and chips and a hot chocolate, great value at £12.00, food served within 5-10 minutes, lovely chips, just what was needed. Highly recommended, and would definitely stop here again, first class.

Really good, high-quality fish which was sizeable and worth the price. The chips were good even after the drive back to my accommodation where I ate my meal - if you have a car with heated seats I’d recommend using them to keep it hot! I ordered online and then collected from the shop. Was ignored when I entered the shop despite standing at the collection point and trying to get the attention of the staff - then when someone did talk to me my order had been sat on the counter all along! Not the best.

Went for chips and a burger last weekend. The chap who served me was really friendly and upbeat. I was then served a decent sized portion for a good price. Perfect!

Best fish and chips I've ever had

I have eaten in our main chippy in machynlleth many times, and the food has always been average to good. The ease of use of the online order system has been a brilliant addition to those who have mobility issues, etc. I recently ordered using the online system, and my brother picked up our food from the shop. However, due to a misunderstanding and lack of communication from the staff at the chip shop, we thought that we had not received our full order. However it came to my attention that we had infact received our food ordered but I'm not sure if it was a money saving hack but they had put all of our scampi in a single carton ( I ordered 2x large chips and scampi portions) and had put the large haddock portion I had ordered on top of a large portion of chips. This made it look like we had not received the right order. However, after a shop worker had spoken to me via my brothers mobile, it turned out that they had put the haddock on top of the large portion of chips and the chips were the portions of chips to go with our scampi. Confusing, I know. Tho she said that they had added a extra amount of chips to the scampi for no extra charge, I am annoyed that they could of explained all of this when my brother picked the order up in the first place. By the time we had sorted out the issue, the food was cooler than it was when picked up, and had to be re-heated. The food itself was ok. Scampi was cooked well and tasted nice. My mother enjoyed her haddock which looked lovely. The mushy peas were nice but cold. The chips However, were quite poor. Alot of small crispy bits of chips. And chips had a re-cooked feel to them. Standard not up to its usual I'm afraid this time. The situation did not help either. Very disappointed.

Visit here when passing through and it's an absolute treat. The fish and chips are first class and some of the best that I have had. Always fresh and cooked to perfection. Good sized portions and great value for money. I would thoroughly encourage people to try them out, I'd be surprised if you are disappointed.

We fell on this place while travelling home from a week away, absolutely amazing haddock. It's probably the best we've had from a chip shop in a very long time. Massive portions sizes and really good prices, too.

Absolutely superb haddock and chips, cooked fresh to order. Generous portions, very friendly staff. Way better than any fish and chips you can get in Barmouth! Will return soon.

If ever you're in Machynlleth, do yourself a favour and stop by Hennighan's (I ate at the bottom shop, I'm sure it's much the same at the top shop). They do the best curry sauce, so deliciously fruity, it's out of this world! Oh, and also the service was brilliant too, it was quick and also friendly! Before I forget, the cup of tea was fantastic too! I wish I had some photos of the chips that I drenched in the curry sauce. 😬

I was very impressed with the Henningams chef and he was very knowledgeable about gluten intolerances. And use a separate GF frier and they have gluten free vinegar too!

Hello I’ve been visiting your chip shops for ever, the other year I came in and seen your largest sausage, my face was shocked. And the owner was lovely, had such a giggle and chat, it was a visit I would never forget. Fast forward a couple of years and I visited this evening. On entering the shop we looked in the hot counter’s all seemed nice. But nothing caught my eye. After a minute or two I looked at the wall menu. My husband ordered a chicken burger with chips. I looked at the menu and it stated a chicken burger. So I followed his order and ordered the same. The young girl on the till spent almost the entire time looking out the window / door we was then asked if we wanted chips. Errr yes! After asking if I wanted chips and her telling me the price and snatching the cash out of my hand this was the last correspondence with any staff member. We waited and waited, no questions of would you like any salt and vinegar, why? No question would you like butter or salad with your chicken burger! Why? No question would you like a bag! Why? The young girl then looked away from the window put our two boxes on the counter and walked off. This was after the so called cook turning our burgers occasionally in between the more important job of the evening looking what’s going on in the world on her mobile phone! How is this allowed? A young man behind the counter then came forward and said 2 chicken burgers. I looked at my husband and said no salad!? We walked out laughing at the poor service and even more annoyed of no offer of any condiments! Why? Good old Spar to the rescue. For lettuce tomatoes and cucumber. Driving back to the caravan both of us still laughing and appalled at the same time of the poor or should I say none existent! Customer service, Getting back to the van and opening our boxes, I was faced with a few funny looking chips and a bun with butter on it, butter who asked if I wanted butter? Yes no-one! Why????as I’m lactose intolerant! Why was I not asked for butter and why wasn’t I asked or informed that my chicken burger was in fact southern fried!? Which I can not tolerate! So my tummy now feels like my throat has been cut due to not being able to eat any of my meal! Not at all happy is an understatement!!! Kind regards The woman now in the kebab shop over the road! Having had many chippy teas from hennighans in the past, my wife and I made a beeline as soon as we arrived at the caravan in corris. We went into the shop across from the spar, and we were met by a rather sullen young lady who had a face akin to a slapped posterior. We ordered our food, no questions returned regarding salt and vinegar or any salad with our burgers. My wife then had to go to the spar and purchase some salad items. On returning to the caravan we saw only disappointment, dry chips, about 12 chips each and burgers that were drier than the Sahara Desert. As stated earlier we have never had a problem at hennighans , I have been 6 times my wife probably over 100 times. But the surly young staff need a bit of a chat. The young lady who was frying was way too busy on her mobile, I was rather hoping she dropped it in to the oven😂. The young lad was quite polite. It’s the first time we have been disappointed with hennighans and will be calling again this week at some point, but more than likely at the store further up the road.

Had salt and pepper squid with chips and mushy peas which was were simply delicious! The staff were friendly and it had a real community feel. Would happily go there again.

Visited the newer "bottom " shop and was greeted by a pleasant lady at the counter who helped me choose . The portion given was of more than sufficient size which is just as well as it is not the cheapest of places to visit. Have no hesitation of visiting again but for an family the cost could be off putting, no longer are fish and chips a cheap meal, especially here.

Had fish and chips in an upmarket restaurant earlier in the week and although good was not as good as Hannigans in Machynllyth, the fish had a really crisp batter, and the tasty mushy peas were made on the premises . I was also given some really good homemade curry sauce as a taster! Highly recommend this place, you can eat in or take away.

Descent food. Gluten free options. Flies in main shop a bit off putting. But looks clean to be fair. Usually very busy, but you can order online and by phone

My friend recommended this place to me so I was glad to try it. The food was fresh and well cooked. It was very tasty and the staff are nice and friendly. I would definitely recommend a visit here if you are near Machynlleth. Free on street parking too, a small but pleasant town centre to have a wander and burn off the chippy food.

Popped in while at a motorbike festival, our cod and chips were really tasty, beautifull cooked and large portions, a fish and chip shop well worth visiting, thankyou very much for the lovely food and nice staff. We had to pop back in and let them know how much we enjoyed the food.

Popped into Hennighans after several friends recommended it as one of the best fish and chip shops to visit. Friendly staff, great menu and reasonable prices (we have paid more elsewhere for lower quality food). We ordered a large chips, which was enough to share between the 3 of us, and a battered fish each. Chips were delicious and the fish was amazing, just the right amount of batter and a decent sized fillet of tasty fish. You can go to some fish and chip shops and enjoy the battered fish when it is hot at the start of eating the meal but it quickly loses the flavour as the meal cools down. Not here, the fish was perfect right down to the last cooling morsel. The mushy peas were also delicious, a real treat compared to the fluorescent tasteless mush that seems to be offered in quite of lot of other chippies these days. Highly recommended and will definitely be going back. Thank you :)

Best local chippy. For an occasional treat of picking up on the way home from a day out, everything was freshly cooked and gorgeous, served by friendly staff.

Stopped off en-route back home from our North Wales coast holiday. So glad we did, we bought fish and chips and they were amazing. The batter on the fish was so light and golden, the fish was so tasty - no stodgy offerings here. Chips were perfect, not loaded with grease. Generous portion size and good value for money.

Excellent gluten free fish and chips

Absolutely outstanding haddock chips. One of the best fish and chip meals I have had. We arrived just on closing time last night after travelling all day but the man was so kind and cooked our meal for us even though it made him late finishing. They kept hot all the way to Twywn too!! We will be back.....probably tomorrow!!

If you want quality fish and chips then you can in Hennighans

Chips and fish were alright. The curry was congealed, with lots of jelly lumps in it and not a nice flavour. The mushy peas were also congealed and tasted fishier than the fish. They charge you for a bag, forks and sachets. The young waiter forgot to put through one of our chips and I was responded with poor customer service from a woman. The gravy was tasty

We asked to do our daughters birthday party here for her and a few friends and they was more than accommodating, they dressed the table and done helium balloons. Also next door is studio 13 , their ice cream and pudding shop , we was able to pre order cupcakes for after dinner and they were beautifully made and delicious. The staff are all very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food itself was great , fish was beautiful.

Ordered a cheese burger and never got offered salad or sauce. Then you have to pay extra for sauce never heard that b4.

We called in to the Hennigans bottom chip shop today just after 12 . The place was very clean and staff very friendly and efficient .We didn't have to wait long for our food .I ordered jumbo sausage and chips and my partner had beef and ale pie and chips . The chips were still cooking so they were nice and hot when we received them and they had a crispy coating to them really tasty and soft inside , the jumbo sausage was very tasty too and not greasy .My partner really enjoyed his pie and chips too . We ordered small portions of chips and they were a really nice portions size not skimpy enough as they were, so glad not to have had large portions , our meals came to just over £10 excellent . There is a room to sit in next door so great for a rainy day .

After a 12hr shift in the cold, I didn’t fancy kebab or anything from the hotel I was staying in. I searched for Fish and Chips and Hennighan’s came up. I walked into a lovely welcome, they’re the only take away accepting card payments, and their chips and sausage I bought were lovely (and the portion huge), but the curry sauce. The curry sauce is something I will be returning for. It was decently spicy, really tasty and moreish. It’s the first time I’ve scraped to clean the container. I’m back in the area in a fortnight, so will see you again Hennighans!

Jesus the ladies serving here are miserable…sour faced all of them. What happened to smiling and being polite? Food is fine apart from the curry sauce.

Best Fish & Chips I have tasted. A lot of fish shops add a ton of salt (guess to improve shelf life) Here fresh fish and 1st class.

Went in around 4:30 for chips, they were OK but were definitely refried at least once, but then we were going in off peak. Would have been nice to have been asked if we wanted fresh. Prices are very reasonable and handy it has long opening times

Stopped off on the way home from Borth. Good chips, you could tell they weren't fresh, but still really nice! Good amount of salt and vinegar too 🙂

We thought that the cod & chips we bought from here were delicious.

We spent a weekend in Machynlleth and had this fish and chips as a take away on Saturday evening (15 October 2022). We ordered large cod, calamari, large chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce and curry sauce. When we got home, we found that we were given scampi instead of calamari and the cod smelled a bit funky, my boyfriend did eat half of it which was not that much as the fish was not "large" and he spent few moments in the bathroom feeling sick afterwards in the evening. I do not recommend this place. We did not have time to address this with the owner as we were leaving early next morning. The fish also was definitely not large, a piece of it was missing as if someone removed some of it after frying. It is a shame we did not take a photo but it looked nothing like some of the good review photos on here.

Indeed, when I visited the bottom Hennighans shop earlier today I got phenomenol chips from a lad called Rhys. They had been cooked to perfection and he was as quick as a cheatah serving them up. Thankyou very much Rhys that was the best I've ever seen anybody serve chips. Incredible.

It's rare to find fish this good, even on the coast. I sometimes drive up to an hour all the way from Newtown just to get some.

Terrible!!! Only fish available was Cod, the most common fish caught by Irish and uk fisherman. No other fish available till next Wednesday which would tell me the fish isint very fresh at all. I decided to skip the bad signs and try the only fish available (cod). I then asked for a knife and forks to eat my fish and was told they didn’t have any. only to realise when I got home to my knife and fork the fish broke up on the fork which tells me it’s frozen. Want to test my knowledge on fish? Be my guest!!

Feel Hennigans isn't as good as it was. The batter is far more greasy and the fish is very mushy - the quality that i've experienced from here previously is definately lacking.

We arrived too early for fish and chips 11am We had a breakfast on the recommendation of some builders who were working in the area. Very nice it was too.

Definitely some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten! Everything was really hot, and freshly fried, with beautifully crispy batter. Served by a very friendly lady too! Got some lovely cake and chocolate slices for later from their sandwich deli.
