Hennighans Top Shop in Powys

Paid £10 for a piece of fish which was dried up, the batter was chewy and the flesh yellowish. The chips seemed as though they had been left over from lunch time with many of them being hardened scrap ends, the pie was cold in the centre yet the pastry had a hardened crust? The assistant was involved with a conversation with someone in the back area and continued chatting whilst they poured salt all over the chips. Over £20 in total was binned due to being inedible. I have visited here for years and years but have noticed a gradual decline in the quality of food and the service provided and I am saddened to say that I wont be trying here again. With regard to the owners comment stating that they are open 8 days per week, his other shop was closed for refurbishment at the time so NO, they were not open 8 days per week just wednesday through to Saturday, 4 days per week

Always fantastic fish, the best for many miles

First time for having fish and chips. 12 inch battered sausage and chips with curry sauce. Curry sauce was very tasty. They were absolutely lovely. Will definitely go again. Recommend

This is the best fish and chip shop locally and I come a few miles to eat here rather than opting for others more local to me. The chips are hot freshly cooked and lovely and the pies and fish are always tasty. There is often a queue but this due to the quality of food and worth the wait.

We ate in. The fish was delicious, as was the curry sauce. Chips a little anaemic and it was cold in the restaurant part but still worth a return. Super friendly service too.

I've had food from Hennighan's for as long as I remember and I never thought about leaving a positive review until now. (especially if it helps the rating) I cannot recall a single time where I was unhappy with the service they provide and can guarantee they will treat anyone with the same respect you show them.

Stopped on way back to Conwy. I wish we had gluten free chips like these up N Cymru! They weren’t greasy, perfectly cooked. Peas were really good! The chicken breast tasted great. Also rate the tomato sauce by Stokes! Will defo stop by again on way through.

Very disappointing, very unfriendly staff who all looked most unhappy in their jobs and spent their time chatting to each other and ignoring customers. We had to wait whilst our food was cooked which is normally a good sign, however the haddock was a very thin offering which was overcooked and dry. The pea fritter was encased in ridiculously thick batter and the chips were average. The curry sauce was nice. I object to paying £9 for a piece of fish (that didn’t include the chips) that’s cooked so poorly. Extra 20p for a bag and 5p for a fork. I really wouldn’t bother!!

We were in Machynlleth meeting our son on his way home from university and decided to have lunch here. The staff were very professional and friendly and the premises spotlessly clean, The food was of high quality and ample portions, the gluten free haddock was a good size and delicious. It was nice and reassuring to know that they understood about gluten intolerance. We will definitely be back

Shocking, if it wasn't for the other half I'd of taken it back. Size of the portion ? I wondered if I was given a mini fish & chips and at £9.75 !!! seriously? What a ssip take. Fish tasteless and dry my first thought was it had been double dipped re heated, chips, well chips. First and last time, reviews don't make sense if that's the standard of what you're used to around there, you need to get out more. Shocking.

We are coming to the end of our first season caravaning near machynlleth. We have tried almost every takeaway within a 15 mile radius on days out etc and keep coming back to 1 ! Hennighans 😀 Food ALWAYS ready on time, ALWAYS fresh and ALWAYS tasty, and when served with a smile , that's the reason we keep returning. Keep up the good work 😀

Called in on way to Aberystwyth to visit a friend. Got cheesy chips and they were bloomin lush!! Beautiful chips with loads of cheese melted over!! Friendly lads behind counter too!! Will come again and highly recommend!!

Tasty battered sausage and chips but counter service was a bit slow as the staff were focussed on online orders. The curry sauce is deliciously fruity.

Actually went to their take away/restaurant down the road, not the 'top shop' but couldn't find this on trip advisor. Fish was ok but a bit undercooked with greasy batter. Chips were ok but nothing special. TBH our local chippy in Telford is better for both fish and chips. Not so bad that I wouldn't go again but nothing special considering they're listed in top 40 chippys.

Excellent, high quality fish and chips. The Best! Always a joy to get food from here, and knowing it is sustainability sourced fish. I used the website online ordering, so it was all arranged in advance, and paid online by card. Arrived and food was ready to be placed into card takeaway packaging immediately. Delicious 😋

Soo good!! Usually you get a gross, heavy feeling after eating fish and chips. These don't do that. It was so good!! Highly recommend Guys behind the counter were a good laugh and rightly slated us for our Welsh pronunciation. A good laugh

I've heard good things about this place for a long time. On the outside it doesn't look fancy but on the inside its really tidy. Good clean tasty food and reasonably priced. It was the first time I've use this chip shop. It's a shame I live two hours away as the curry sauce it to die for. The best chip shop curry sauce I've had in my life. Easily! I do pass through Machynlleth now and again so I'll 100% call in.

Just popped into Hennighans for a drink and a bowl of chips. What a lovely restaurant, so clean and inviting. Staff very friendly, drinks lovely and the chips, wow the best we’ve ever tasted. We live in the midlands so can’t use regularly, but we won’t hesitate to call again when we are next in the area. Thank you so much for the wonderful service, see you again. Sue & Geoff

Only just makes average and this second visit will be our last. We first tried these chips last year when my wife was working in the hospital and if nothing else, this second set of chips a year later suggests they are consistent at least. Portions - small was reasonable size, though Large is more like a Medium. Staff, indifferent and completely ignored us for a couple of minutes until ready to ask for our order. A quick smile and 'be with you shortly' costs nothing. Food - Chips, about 40% were of a decent size and quality, 40% somewhat skinny and 20% scraps. Fish was OK. Batter nice. Sausage... at the price paid I expected a large one, not one that looked like it belonged on a cocktail stick with a piece of cheese. Price - above average, but given the poor quality I would avoid.... Not sure how this gets such rave reviews, other than there is no other choice perhaps.. Perhaps we're spoilt where we live with a large choice of chip shops and thus competition.

Tried this chip shop last week, when on holiday. It's the nicest fish and chips I've eaten in a very long time ! Not greasy at all and the fish was cooked fresh while we waited. I would definitely recommend it !

Another choice for gluten-free, and they were delicious! The family had a selection of items from the menu, and they were really happy with their meals, and as said, the gluten-free fish and chips were delicious. We'll definitely be calling in again on our way past!

Soggy greasy fish and chips...certainly didn't taste like cod that I ordered mushy and tasteless. 2nd time we have had from here not going to be a 3rd I'm afraid. Miserable staff who could even be bothered to acknowledge you more interested in doing their takeaway orders despite standing in front of them for 10 minutes and then asking who is next!!! No I'm not a tourist.

Have called at this shop for many years, called in yesterday beautiful food and staff were lovely. The fish here is amazing , give it a try you won’t be disappointed.

The food we had from this brilliant chip shop was fabulous. The fish was cooked to almost perfection, with a crisp batter and lovely tasting and flakey white haddock fillet. I can happily say that the pea fritter I had was one of the best I've had. Thick crunchy batter and gorgeous mushy pea filling. The last time I brought food from this chippy, I rated the food and service I received average at best due to miss-communication between myself and the staff. However, this time, the food/service has definitely improved.

Worst chips I've ever had the misfortune to buy. Very dry, as if they were from the oven. The price was also expensive I thought. Wish I'd gone somewhere else but was travelling through and there was a parking space outside.

Couldn’t decide on Friday take out and so pleased we chose chippy. We both had cod and chips with a side of mushy peas and gravy. The chips were split on; hot and well cooked with enough crisp, and the fish was excellent. Gravy and peas excellent too

Very good place to stop for food. Option to takeaway or sit in and eat. The dining area is comfortable and clean, service was excellent. Nice clean loos too! Stopped in for food after a motorbike ride through mid Wales. The menu is varied, very reasonably priced. I went for the scampi and chips and a hot chocolate, great value at £12.00, food served within 5-10 minutes, lovely chips, just what was needed. Highly recommended, and would definitely stop here again, first class.

Really good, high-quality fish which was sizeable and worth the price. The chips were good even after the drive back to my accommodation where I ate my meal - if you have a car with heated seats I’d recommend using them to keep it hot! I ordered online and then collected from the shop. Was ignored when I entered the shop despite standing at the collection point and trying to get the attention of the staff - then when someone did talk to me my order had been sat on the counter all along! Not the best.

Went for chips and a burger last weekend. The chap who served me was really friendly and upbeat. I was then served a decent sized portion for a good price. Perfect!

I have eaten in our main chippy in machynlleth many times, and the food has always been average to good. The ease of use of the online order system has been a brilliant addition to those who have mobility issues, etc. I recently ordered using the online system, and my brother picked up our food from the shop. However, due to a misunderstanding and lack of communication from the staff at the chip shop, we thought that we had not received our full order. However it came to my attention that we had infact received our food ordered but I'm not sure if it was a money saving hack but they had put all of our scampi in a single carton ( I ordered 2x large chips and scampi portions) and had put the large haddock portion I had ordered on top of a large portion of chips. This made it look like we had not received the right order. However, after a shop worker had spoken to me via my brothers mobile, it turned out that they had put the haddock on top of the large portion of chips and the chips were the portions of chips to go with our scampi. Confusing, I know. Tho she said that they had added a extra amount of chips to the scampi for no extra charge, I am annoyed that they could of explained all of this when my brother picked the order up in the first place. By the time we had sorted out the issue, the food was cooler than it was when picked up, and had to be re-heated. The food itself was ok. Scampi was cooked well and tasted nice. My mother enjoyed her haddock which looked lovely. The mushy peas were nice but cold. The chips However, were quite poor. Alot of small crispy bits of chips. And chips had a re-cooked feel to them. Standard not up to its usual I'm afraid this time. The situation did not help either. Very disappointed.

Visit here when passing through and it's an absolute treat. The fish and chips are first class and some of the best that I have had. Always fresh and cooked to perfection. Good sized portions and great value for money. I would thoroughly encourage people to try them out, I'd be surprised if you are disappointed.

We fell on this place while travelling home from a week away, absolutely amazing haddock. It's probably the best we've had from a chip shop in a very long time. Massive portions sizes and really good prices, too.

If ever you're in Machynlleth, do yourself a favour and stop by Hennighan's (I ate at the bottom shop, I'm sure it's much the same at the top shop). They do the best curry sauce, so deliciously fruity, it's out of this world! Oh, and also the service was brilliant too, it was quick and also friendly! Before I forget, the cup of tea was fantastic too! I wish I had some photos of the chips that I drenched in the curry sauce. 😬

Hello I’ve been visiting your chip shops for ever, the other year I came in and seen your largest sausage, my face was shocked. And the owner was lovely, had such a giggle and chat, it was a visit I would never forget. Fast forward a couple of years and I visited this evening. On entering the shop we looked in the hot counter’s all seemed nice. But nothing caught my eye. After a minute or two I looked at the wall menu. My husband ordered a chicken burger with chips. I looked at the menu and it stated a chicken burger. So I followed his order and ordered the same. The young girl on the till spent almost the entire time looking out the window / door we was then asked if we wanted chips. Errr yes! After asking if I wanted chips and her telling me the price and snatching the cash out of my hand this was the last correspondence with any staff member. We waited and waited, no questions of would you like any salt and vinegar, why? No question would you like butter or salad with your chicken burger! Why? No question would you like a bag! Why? The young girl then looked away from the window put our two boxes on the counter and walked off. This was after the so called cook turning our burgers occasionally in between the more important job of the evening looking what’s going on in the world on her mobile phone! How is this allowed? A young man behind the counter then came forward and said 2 chicken burgers. I looked at my husband and said no salad!? We walked out laughing at the poor service and even more annoyed of no offer of any condiments! Why? Good old Spar to the rescue. For lettuce tomatoes and cucumber. Driving back to the caravan both of us still laughing and appalled at the same time of the poor or should I say none existent! Customer service, Getting back to the van and opening our boxes, I was faced with a few funny looking chips and a bun with butter on it, butter who asked if I wanted butter? Yes no-one! Why????as I’m lactose intolerant! Why was I not asked for butter and why wasn’t I asked or informed that my chicken burger was in fact southern fried!? Which I can not tolerate! So my tummy now feels like my throat has been cut due to not being able to eat any of my meal! Not at all happy is an understatement!!! Kind regards The woman now in the kebab shop over the road! Having had many chippy teas from hennighans in the past, my wife and I made a beeline as soon as we arrived at the caravan in corris. We went into the shop across from the spar, and we were met by a rather sullen young lady who had a face akin to a slapped posterior. We ordered our food, no questions returned regarding salt and vinegar or any salad with our burgers. My wife then had to go to the spar and purchase some salad items. On returning to the caravan we saw only disappointment, dry chips, about 12 chips each and burgers that were drier than the Sahara Desert. As stated earlier we have never had a problem at hennighans , I have been 6 times my wife probably over 100 times. But the surly young staff need a bit of a chat. The young lady who was frying was way too busy on her mobile, I was rather hoping she dropped it in to the oven😂. The young lad was quite polite. It’s the first time we have been disappointed with hennighans and will be calling again this week at some point, but more than likely at the store further up the road.

Had salt and pepper squid with chips and mushy peas which was were simply delicious! The staff were friendly and it had a real community feel. Would happily go there again.

Had fish and chips in an upmarket restaurant earlier in the week and although good was not as good as Hannigans in Machynllyth, the fish had a really crisp batter, and the tasty mushy peas were made on the premises . I was also given some really good homemade curry sauce as a taster! Highly recommend this place, you can eat in or take away.

Visited the newer "bottom " shop and was greeted by a pleasant lady at the counter who helped me choose . The portion given was of more than sufficient size which is just as well as it is not the cheapest of places to visit. Have no hesitation of visiting again but for an family the cost could be off putting, no longer are fish and chips a cheap meal, especially here.

Descent food. Gluten free options. Flies in main shop a bit off putting. But looks clean to be fair. Usually very busy, but you can order online and by phone
