Hemsby Fish & Chip Shop in Great Yarmouth

Not well thought out. There are 2 tills but no one knows where to stand to be served, just aimlessly floating around the middle of the shop. 1 till should be clearly labelled as "collections/online" and "shop orders", or something similar to avoid the mass of people just standing around, 3 people when I was in there were getting rather agitated because they weren't being served, because of this, the atmosphere in there shifts, making you not want to be there. Some customers even stand in the doorway when you are trying to leave, again, signage would help with this. Every chip shop I've been to, they always ask when wrapping up chips if you want salt or/and vinegar, this place did not ask and in doing so, I had to wait a further 5/10 minutes of already waiting 10-15 minutes for the order. The food is okay but it is greasy (typical chip shop), the sausage is very greasy though, the chicken nuggets are average and the chips were bland - even with other sauces I can have. Saying that though, the portion sizes are VERY good, it's just a shame on the quality of food.

Chips, curry & mushy peas (yes all on the same tray.) All fresh, lovely meal. Will definitely go back now we've found it!

Wow i was down the road an i could smell they fish an chips but couldn't find it until googled it abou 3mins from the street.

Ordered 2 large cod and chips and a regular cod with chips. It was cooked to order but took time, I asked for salt and vinegar on one portion and it was hardly touched. The chips weren't too bad to be fair but the fish batter along with the fish were tasteless. The batter was oily and greasy. The skin was left on which to my only my personal taste is horrible and put me off the fish. Not very big flakes of fish anyway. £32 was far too pricey for what we had and it was wasted.

I come from Cambridgeshire and the best fish and chips iv had is barney's plaice well till I came here. Wow, cod was on par, not dry, and the curry sauce was perfect. My new fo to fish and chip shop when on holiday

We are down in hemsby regularly and this fish and chip shop is the best Cooked to order and fantastic food and reasonably priced

One of the best fish and chip shops I've ever visited. Oh and they leave the skin on which i love and I'm not used to been from West Yorkshire and they even did us a bag of bits or scraps as they call them in these parts. All was cooked fresh in front of us, a very clean establishment. Staff very friendly and welcoming, will definitely make this a regular chippy for us on our 4x visits to hemsby every year.

Absolutely horrific, thrown straight in the bin, chips were brown and the potatoes were either cheap or from two days ago.

The fish and chips I ordered for my family were absolutely disgusting. The chips had obviously been cooked hours earlier and been kept in the hot hold. They were hard and over cooked. The fish batter was oily and obviously been cooked in old oil! And also kept on the hot hold for hours! The price was £41.00 for an absolutely disgusting meal. I will never be order from there again. There’s no excuse for it. Battered fish takes a matter of minutes to cook. There’s no need to batch cook. Absolutely horrible. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Just had fish, chips & beans from here, same for the wife but she had curry and gotta say the service and food was both excellent.. 5 stars from me & her..

Love the chips but i have read your reviews about the crunchy batter and have just had a battered sausage ! not a crispy bit in sight ? it was all soggy batter , not sure if there was a reason and this might have been a one off but i dont think i will order that again ! and no i couldnt take it back as we drive to hemsby on the strength of loving the chips then drive home before eating them

Best fish and chips I have had in a while, and good value

Good Fish and Chips plus battered beef burger and chicken burger, the chicken burger could of had a bit of lettuce as quite plain in the bun alone, some chips had black marks but overall very good and would recommend.

Just had saturday tea from the chippy and as usual it was bloomin lovely. Staff always brilliant. Thank you all xx

My first visit to this very popular chippie. Place and pay for your order, your number is called and you collect from the counter. The wait is definitely worth it, fantastic cod and chips.

Lovely large haddock cooked beautifully.

Massive portion chips. Had 1 portion between 2 + still too much. Only place found that sell rock salmon.

Honestly, really enjoy fish and chips and would really recommend this very friendly chip shop to anyone. While the customer service is fantastic, the great tasting food is even better and it is all reasonably priced to. There is plenty of parking outside and again, I cam not rate the battered sausages and chios enough. Its really handy because they accept cash and card payments and what's more important than that is the place always looks clean and tidy with an abundance of information for days out in the locality, and a vast sized notice board advertising local trades and services. Its a huge thumbs up from me.

Food every well cooked spotlessly clean and staff are friendly and helpful

Under cooked chips basically white had rock on should have 1 bone but mine had sinu it not been cut properly I would of taken it back but took it home they were very busy but no excuse for bad food only the seagulls eat it

Very busy which is normally good - but disappointing fish and chips. Saw fish being cooked but delivered very dry and tough chewy batter. Would not recommend.

On a short break we found Hemsby Fish & Chip Shop on a Friday evening at the beginning of summer hols. Service was polite and quick. On the ball with a lot of food ready. You can phone to order ahead. Cod & chips twice with curry sauce. Very tasty & plenty of it. Good prices. Excellent all round. If we're in the area again we'd definitely go back. Highly recommended. *****

Cod was lovely and cooked to order, chips a little dry, but it's the end of the season and we will soon be having new potatoes, would recommend to order by phone on a Friday.

Let's start with the fact that my little boy doesn't usually eats a battered sausage, but he consumed the whole thing together with crunchy batter like it was a chocolate. Very pleasent meal on the day out, fish and chips very good and good prices ☺️.

Chips were undercooked, fish was swimming in grease and the batter very soggy, mushy peas were grey and curry sauce tasteless! Extremely disappointed, seemed very rushed. Was a waste of £18, will most definitely not be using again or recommending

This place will be the reason my doctor finds out I have high cholesterol! Unreal right from when I walked in! My mother had just moved to Hemsby and on the day we needed a meal and fast! I walked in the chippy and first thing I could smell was beef dripping, now if anyone knows about dripping and chips this is the absolute elite level way to cook them! Got it home opened it up and the taste and smell was just how I expected, I was in heaven! Im going to find it really hard to stay away from this place now I’ll be a regular visitor to Hemsby! I would also like to add the mushy peas are proper mushy peas not the watered down rubbish you get around London! Keep up the outstanding work, I’ll be seeing you and your beef dripping chips very soon!

We have been coming here for a few years now and the Hemsby Fish and chips is always on the list of places to eat. Sadly today the food was pretty awful. Both the fish and chips were cold and old. We normally visit at least twice a week. After throwing away old/cold chips and fish which normally are unbeatable but today was cold we will not be returning. Fish should always be cooked to order they take 5 minutes or so. Chips again should be cooked fresh if not possible at least part cooking would and a second cook (normally no more than a couple of minutes) would at least make them hot and edible. There are other friyeries in the area which do a good hot serving. Get better or loose your customers. Thanks for the response. Nice to see. One point I hoped you would pick on was the freshness of your food. You haven't. A shame. Pre cooked fresh fish goes dry after a while and should be cooked to order only. It doesn't take long You still have a good business and I'm sure if I had gone in at a busier time the review would not be a issue. Good luck to your business in the future. 👍👍

Went here whilst on holiday and glad we did. My son has an egg allergy and after trying two other local take outs we found this one, and thankfully their batter does NOT contain egg. Staff were very helpful, checking ingredients for us and even showing us portion sizes so we could decide what to buy. We had cod, chips, mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy, let's just say there was nothing left on our plates, very enjoyable. It's worth noting that they only accept cash, as per signage. Good price too, cheaper than I expected it to be. Thank you for your help and the delicious food.

Fish was piping hot and fresh, good crispy batter, chips also piping hot and crispy, overall very good quality and well worth it

After waiting for order to be ready, I went to pay by card, the unfriendly assistant bellowed cash only then said don’t you know where the cash machine is down the street. No signs in shop to say they only take cash. Walked out .

Every time we visit Hemsby which is quite often we have fish & chips from here and it's so delicious. The staff are always friendly and polite.

The haddock we ordered turned out to be as big as a Whale, to be honest one portion of fish and chips would of been enough for two people. For me the batter was too oily though.

Had food from here a few times on trips to Norfolk, all that my wife and myself have had has always been fantastic better than home.

Just arrived tonight at Hemsby beach holiday park, so glad we found Hemsby fish and chips. The fish was super tasty, batter crispy and light and the chips never tasted chips so light and creamy. Thank you for a great first night's dinner. 👍

Ordered 2 large cod with chips and 2 kids meals. Fish was cooked to perfection, saveloy was good, chicken nuggets went down well, but the chips were soggy. A little bit more time in the fryer would have done them the world of good. Tasty though

Can take money but can't do orders right. Ordered a fish and curry sauce and got chips and curry sauce how can they write things down and give the orders to people and expect people to eat what they haven't got. I was looking forward to it as well oh well I don't recommend this place if they to this to customers. Customer is always right and also waiting outside fair enough but if don't listen it's there problem

Excellent meal, but a bit expensive?

Nice food. Stopped for a kids meal and it was good. Everything was fresh and there was a short wait for the fish bites. Just a note, they cook in beef dripping.

I very rarely eat fish and chips but my Mum and I spent a few days in Norfolk and she loves fish and chips so we went and got some from here! Oh my word! These are the most amazing fish and chips I've had in many, many years! It's a good job I don't live nearby otherwise I'd be eating these far too often! The chips were SO tasty and the batter on the fish was absolute perfection (as was the fish itself). Delicious!

Fish and chips were fantastic. The curry sauce was amazing, staff were so friendly, only excepted cash which wasn't a problem as there was a cash machine down the road. Will definitely be going back next time

Very large portions. fish was a bit greasy but that was because cooked to order so didn't have time to drain . But in all very enjoyable will go again

Good fish, chips not to my taste, spent 6 mins transporting (closed) and ended up very mushy. Good for cooked dinner supplement but wouldn't push it for regular takeouts. Well priced though and plenty of choice for the fish (check availability).

Ordered our food online & then collected. Food was ready & staff were nice & welcoming. Portions were very generous. I had large chips & with I had got a regular portion as I could only managed half! My husband really enjoyed his fish & the onion rings were homemade & very tasty. All round a really good experience.
