Went here for a snack on arrival on Harris, and managed to go back twice more during out week there. Smoked salmon pate and oatcakes or sour dough was so delicious, I didn't even sample any cakes, but it all looked lovely. Friendly, relaxed surroundings, and great views to enjoy at the same time. The photography on sale was also pretty impressive - I am not normally drawn to framed photographs as artwork, but these were a class apart from most.

We visited three times in four days. The food is to die for and the photographic art is out of this world. My wife swears by the smoked salmon pate but I was adventurous and had three different dishes - all mouth-wateringly excellent. We have a house full of pictures but could not resist a breathtaking print of the northern lights. There are many excellent photographers around but here you will find real works of art. A favourite Salavador Dali print is now being consigned to the attic to make way for our newly acquired treasure.

Tea rooms and galleries on the Outer Hebrides tend to fall squarely into one of two distinct categories: traditional and eccentric. We felt this one was leaning more towards the eccentric and was all the better for that. The food was excellent and felt fresh and home-made with beautiful bread. While we were waiting for it to arrive I had a squiz at some of the photos on display. They were all of a certain type, were interesting and captured a sense of a life on the islands. There were several that I felt I could live with, but by this point they were competing with a fresh bowl of soup and frankly, that's no competition at all. The bread that came with the soup was so good that I've started chewing random things on my desk at the memory of it.All in all this is a very pleasant little gallery and soupery and makes a perfect stop off point if traversing the island.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

As regular visitors to Harris (and its small but fine selection of cafes) we were interested to try this new kid on the block.First impressions on entering were of a bright and modern interior with a nice feel. The owners were both very friendly and chatty. However we both raised our eyebrows when we saw the menu as we couldn't help but notice how strikingly similar it was in appearance and content to another art cafe in Harris. Given the small number of eating establishments around these parts, you wouldn't have thought it too difficult to create something original? As it is the quality of the food we had was decent overall although not up to the high standards in several other places in Harris and Lewis.Soup was good, but their version of salmon and oatcakes did not excite - the salmon was a pate, but there was nowhere near enough of it to spread over the five (I think) oatcakes. We tried cakes as well, but neither of us were too impressed, one was dry and the other was heavy and dense in the middle. Well short of the competition here I'm afraid!!The photography on display/for sale was really good, although again there were some distinctive styles and ideas that can already be seen in other galleries in Harris, particularly the black and whites. Still really excellent work though. This cafe's location to the north of Tarbert makes it a welcome addition to the area, but it would be great if they could forge their own identity a bit more! We'll certainly give it another try when we are next in the area later in the year.

We first popped into Hebscape four days after it opened in June 2014, loved it but never got round to writing a review. We were excited to go back last week when visiting and we were delighted to find that it was just as good as our first visit.First of all, the building itself fits in well with Darren's art. Simple yet stunning. Chris and Darren (the owners) are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for either of them. Service is both efficient yet homely at the same time. The food is excellent. Good quality, good sized portions and very tasty. (Cakes, scones and soups are all home made). After our visit at the beginning of the week we decided on leaving Hebscape that we'd return before going back to the mainland. What a good decision that was! Not only was it as good as our previous two visits, Chris and Darren gave us an excellent tip for a restaurant on the island that we hadn't been to before.Fantastic place. Don't pass by without stopping!

What a lovely welcome you get at Hebscape from Chris and Darren. Darren's photography is stunning and the coffee, teas and superb cakes encourage an extended viewing! Be careful to keep a sharp eye out for the sign as we missed it the first time when looking for it, the sign is pretty but subtle. Be sure not to miss this wonderful stop wherever you're going as it's well worth a visit. The cakes and coffees are so good, I would suggest to the owners to offer free coffee and cakes to anyone buying a piece of work, then you'd make several return visits... and several purchases!

This is a newly opened café/art gallery that has only been in existence for 4 weeks. Its run by Chris and Darren who also live on the premises. There are many café/galleries of this type in the Islands and the competition is fairly stiff. We visited the café just because it is new and we like to support the local economy. Our first impression was how well designed the interior was. Clean, bright, modern and uncluttered. The artwork was well laid out and appealing. Chris is the cook and Darren does all the art work - superb, extremely well composed photographs of many of the local sights but uniquely done. The prices for large framed prints is very reasonable. The coffee (a Latte) was very well done - the equal of any high-end coffee shop in any city on the mainland. The cakes and almost everything else on the menu were home made (also very good). Chris and Darren are very welcoming, very knowledgeable about the Islands and very good hosts. I highly recommend the HebScape if you are in need of refreshment and appreciate expert photography, beautifully presented in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

We ate twice at Scarista House Restaurant during our recent trip to Harris. We have dined here before on previous visits over the last 20 years and this year it was better than ever. Beautifully prepared local food. First menu - Twice baked cheese soufflé, followed by Stornoway landed hake in a delicious sauce and some delicious vegetables. and then a chocolate roulade!. Second menu - goats cheese, courgette and cheese raviol with a nettle pesto (amazing!) followed by local hand dived scallops and the most delicious lemon tart with excellent pastry, lemon verbena ice cream and a strawberry and pink peppercorn coulis. Stunning view and friendly, efficient staff in a small family-run hotel. The quality of food was excellent, but fully grown humans may wish to order two main courses each, such was the rather miserly amount of actual food - scallops and monkfish respective.y - on our plates. Top marks for presentation and taste, but would have loved a little more.
