I wanted a quick supper and ordered a flatbread with pulled pork- the food was really tasty! The service was quick and friendly in very welcoming atmosphere . I will go back to try more items from the menu which is very reasonably priced for the quality of the food served.

A great, laid-back and informal cafe. No doubt a popular hang-out with students but also suitable for anyone who likes a chilled out informal venue with simple but great food at a decent price. I had some kind of chicken flatbread thing the first evening, and then a couple of nights later a similar mushroom thing. Both excellent. Both freshly cooked to order. The chocolate and raspberry brownies are also highly recommended. Friendly staff, relaxed ambience, nice art work on the walls, outdoor courtyard with tables and chairs etc. Recommended.

The food was absolutely delicious, staff lovely and a wonderful place… The shawarma was wonderful and a good portion for £7, However, it’s a real shame that the £9.50 breakfast had just 1 sausage and the tiniest portion of beans I’ve ever seen. Still delicious, just not worth the money :(

As our son is in uni-digs in Headingley we wanted to acquaint ourselves with its eating places. We chose the Assembly Bar for lunch and first impressions were good as the cafe is in a large airy room with a relaxed atmosphere. The cafe also offered an interesting and appealing menu. However in ordering we taken aback by the sharpness of the waitress. Our enquiry about the type of soup was met with the response "It's gone!" We therefore chose the fish finger and chicken sandwiches and smoked salmon with poached egg. Although careful attention had been paid to the presentation of our meals we felt none of our choices were special in taste. We tried the chocolate and carrot cakes but again our verdicts were similar. In our overall assessment, we liked the room and atmosphere, but felt the service and food flavours needed improvement.

My first visit here was for a healing talk. Firstly I am pleased there was a disabled space free as walking is tiring for me. In the reception there were many plants for sale. On the walls there were several paintings displayed . We were in a small function room with a courtyard view. The presenters were friendly and made us all relaxed. I would like to come again and try the food or another event.

Heart is a great venue and is good for all kinds of visitors. It is very family friendly. The events there are also great and I've been going to the cafe for years. The food is usually very nice and the staff are lovely and very accommodating. It is clean & welcoming. That all said though, I'm afraid recent(ish) price hikes have led to my visits decreasing. Whilst I don't begrudge this lovely place making money and fully appreciate they have to survive in today's climate, it has placed Heart, price-wise, on a par with some of the 'trendier' venues in Headingley. I'm also less inclined to spend £7-10 on a sandwich there when I can buy a freshly made baguette at another nearby venue for only £4.50. My partner recently also ordered the mushroom, egg & truffle ciabatta & was shocked to find it was such a small dish (thin, appetiser sized portion of toasted bread) for a whopping £6. Perhaps we would have expected to pay this for a small starter at an Italian restaurant but not in this cafe. I also feel the cake has gotten a little uninspiring over the last year or two and it tends to be the same options. I do love Heart despite all this and will keep going, albeit not as often as I once did

Visited here for a quick breakfast and coffee before spending a day at Headingley Stadium to watch the test match. Google Maps led us to a bland, community-centre-esque frontage, but do not be put off!! Upon entering the décor, layout and music were all tastefully chosen with a pared back and modern feel in mind. Friendly and fast service, great coffee and fabulous food! Given the chance, I would certainly pay another visit.

Visited 3 times. great gig venue, wish I lived closer. Cafe is very pleasant, food nice, prices ok but portions a little on the frugal side e.g. an extra veg sausage and slice of toast with breakfast would make a huge difference. How about a breakfast/hot drink deal? On one recent visit, furniture started being adjusted around me to accommodate an event, organisers kept knocking my chair, not an apology or acknowledgment, very rude and ignorant! Please take these comment as constructive as I do like this cafe.

Unfortunately, we did not all receive our meals at the same time & as the waitress had a confrontational attitude had to prove that we had paid for all the meals. Woooooooweeeeee now that was a lovely experience. Me and my very desirable wife Margaret fancied a bite to eat after working up an appetite on our anniversary so we decided to give this lovely place a visit. I drove down in my powerful German convertible, it was a hot day so I had the top down (you tend to stick to the leather upholstery if you don't have the top down on hot days) and my wife Margaret loved the ride down to this place. Very ample space for my purring beast (the Porsche, not Margaret). The food was excellent but I was a bit disappointed at the lack of any authentic Mongolian cheese based dishes. I would definitely re-visit this establishment, the hearty meal definitely gave me the extra energy to properly enjoy my anniversary with my exotic temptress Margaret.

I visited the cafe in July with a friend and ordered a veggie sausage sandwich. The place was virtually empty but the order seemed to take ages to arrive. My sandwich arrived but my friend's didn't. I was one third of the way through my sandwich when the waitress sauntered over to tell me that she had got the orders wrong and I was in fact eating a meat sausage! I was utterly horrified - having been a strict vegetarian for the last 40 years! She did apologise but it was too late. 40 years of being true to a cause with which much of my life's work has been concerned, tainted by incompetent staff. When my veggie sausage sandwich arrived, it consisted of just 2 halved sausages in bread- nothing else! The waitress didn't make any effort whatsoever to placate me by serving me with a delicious veggie sandwich, or offer that I may have a refund as a gesture.I have eaten in restaurants all over the world but I have never experienced this kind of mistake in the 40 years that I have been a veggie. What would have happened if someone with a nut allergy had been given something with nuts in 'by mistake'? They need to take people's dietary requirements seriously! I am furious!

Great facility if you "belong", wear the right sandals and utter the right formulae. As for food it's made and served by people with few people skills who overcharge for mediocre food served with indifference and a sense of better things are happening behind the counter. No atmosphere, no inclusiveness and certainly no gritty daily realities. Great place for intellectual, political and artistic cliques to meet and conspire their latest lefty indulgence. So if you're gluten sensitive, socially hypersensitive, self righteous, vegetarian and morally superior you should fit in hand in glove. Nice and clean too.

I've had the honour of performing my poetry at the Heart centre on several occasions, the cafe is bright, good sized, stylish and the staff have always been very helpful. People who have been using the cafe for other purposes than the poetry event on those nights have always been respectful of the performances and in turn the people enjoying eating and meeting at the cafe have been treated with respect. Is it family friendly? Yes it is, but I don't think any venue that serves food and beverages later in the evening - 7,8,9 pm can be entirely family friendly, the mere fact that at 9pm people don't expect to have very young children in public places allows for more adult centred events to be popular. i have nothing against small families, I was small once too and can only imagine how hard it is to settle a two year old late in the evening, in a very quiet event such as a poetry reading. The poetry night is set up so that there is a break every fifteen minutes in which people talk, buy drinks, open and close the doors etc which is great as it allows for that stifling silence to not run on too long, allows people to leave if they want. There simply are not enough free events like this that support local artists in the community. It's very hard to forge a career in the arts and when I was just starting out, this place gave me a chance to try out performing in a comfortable, welcoming environment. It helped launch my career and i think the staff at the centre, and the people that work for free to set it up need to be praised.

The Heart is a beautifully reconstructed old building....architecture with heart. The coffe is splendid. And so is the cake. One of its main attractions for me is a monthly poetry evening where published and award winning writers from all over the country and abroad read their poems. It brings an audience from a wide radius. I've met people from Cumbria and Leicester, for instance, who've made special lourneys for these evenings. It might be an idea to let people know in advance that for just one night a month it's not precisely the place for a party. One night was spoiled for me and my friends who had travelled a good distance for one of the monthly readings....a small party kept up a chat throughout the evening, their very young child was understandably fretful, and appeared to be resentful of a very polite request to do something about it. But The Heart is a great place, and a great poetry venue into the bargain. Shame about some customers.

In short, went for a family celebration as venue was advertised as family friendly but was made to feel unwelcome for having children. Full story explained by this email I sent to the establishment:Hi,It is my son's second birthday this weekend and was one of my best friends' son's second birthday last weekend. As a joint celebration we organised to meet tonight. We researched a "family friendly" place we could visit for dinner and decided on your cafe (only after my wife had rung to confirm you were serving food until 9pm).We arrived between seven and half past and ordered our food. Soon after a poetry reading started. Whilst we made every effort to quieten our children there was inevitably noise. They didn't cry but children of two years old aren't going to be the most attentive listeners to poetry. The glances thrown back at us by the audience certainly made us feel awkward but we could live with that. However, what followed was frankly disgusting.A man approached us and announced "if it had been me I would have taken the children away" and "I just want to know if you are leaving now". We explained we had paid for our food and were going to leave when it was eaten. I have never even heard my friend raise his voice but this man really upset him and me. The looks from his fellow poetry readers and listeners left no doubt they disapproved of our presence (as an aside it is worth noting I am using the word poetry very loosely here - self-indulgent ramblings would describe it better but that is besides the point).Nevertheless, the pompous, conceited and rude actions of these people is one thing; such people exist, you live with it. What really bothers me is how you can get away with calling yourself family friendly? If you want to give your space over to these people, fair enough, put a sign on the door saying PRIVATE FUNCTION. Don't admit families on a family friendly basis, take their money and then have them freely admonished for not sitting in silence. This is not intended in any way to criticise your staff tonight whom were nothing but helpful and I felt sympathised with our position. The advertising of yourself as family friendly is nothing short of a lie. My wife, friend and I will reflect this story on netmums and other relevant forums as tonight was a night looked forward to by all but enjoyed by none thanks to our choice of venue. That way, hopefully, other families won't make the same mistake we did by attending your cafe. Thanks, Andy

Situated inside an old school that has been renovated and kitted out to be a modern community and business space, this cafe can seem a little out of place as you wouldn't know it was there unless someone told you about it. When you find it however, you are greeted with a cosy cafe, wooden benches with tables to match. A nice little enclosed outdoor space for those warmer days (handy to take you away from the bustle of a busy Headingley). The food is good, though maybe for some they may want a more simple dish. The coffee is average, nothing special, but certainly drinkable. Card payment is an option, but if it's just for that one coffee, take cash as there is a surcharge of 50p under £5. The staff seem to be a mixed bunch as sometimes you get a smile, sometimes you get a grunt. Overall it's worth a visit and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed, but watch out for unexpected poetry nights or quizzes that may not have been on the official plan as this can make an evening with friends a bit awkward if this isn't your thing!
