The lounge was doing a roaring trade in cream teas. I've been before and its excellent. The restaurant had 1 person dinning and 2 tables, other than ours, set up for bookings. 3 course set lunch at £32.95 offering all the roasts. We all had the lamb which was excellent, the vegetables were well cooked. The roast potatoes were rock hard, my fork could bearly break the skin, and my first attempt made it jump of the plate. The Yorkshire Pudding were cooked to death, perhaps days before. We all had the ice cream sundae. The ice cream had not been stored properly and had ice crystals in it, and the brownie was stale, presumably from a left over cream tea. Hawtrey's used to be really good, but looks like it has suffered from the times, with customers walking with their feet. Won't be coming back.

Four of us dined here on Saturday night and had the taster menu - we were not disappointed! Our Maître d, Bogdan, was first class and could not have been more accommodating in substituting some of the dishes for one of our party. The food and wine flight were truly fantastic. The only shame was that there weren't more people in the restaurant to create an ambience. Clearly the venue would benefit from advertising this great restaurant. We will most certainly return.

Went with friends for Sunday lunch, having been previously. We had some communication problems with our waiter, particularly in relation to dietary issues, but duly placed our orders. The starters were excellent but thereafter the meals went downhill. The beef was ordered medium rare/pink but arrived well done. Two of the three meals were rejected and replaced, but the beef was cut too thin and was very fatty. The chicken was overcooked and dry. The apple pie was very average, the lemon tart just okay and the ice cream sundae was just ice cream, no coulis or anything else. Nice setting and ambiance but food was a let down.

Hawtreys is the restaurant at The Barn Hotel, Ruislip. Wood panelling, vented ceiling and the lighting make for a very elegant setting. The evening menu is a la carte or a choice of set menues. Three courses for £29.95, or 2 for £25.95, plus a special lobster one. We all had three courses. Perhaps English modern fusion describes the food best and everyone enjoyed it and no one left hungry. Wine at £25 a bottle was fine. The service was 5 star excellent, the waiters were on hand, interested and knew the menu backwards. This was a 30th birthday celebration and we all had a lovely unrushed evening. Very recommended, especially if its a special occassion. Total bill for 6 with all drinks and service £280.

This restaurant deserves more guests than it currently receives, Why is it not better recognised, Perhaps the web site should be looked at! However the menu is excellent, the wines excellent and overall excellent. The restaurant is under valued by its local residents and it would be a great disservice should it be closed. Please do not let this happen.

We received a warm welcome from a lovely young waiter from Sardinia who was attentive and helpful without being intrusive. The lobster was beautifully presented in bite sized pieces and the béarnaise sauce was exactly right. Our favourite local restaurant for the past 15 years but it all changed on our last visit. All the things that made a dinner at Hawtreys extra special have been removed. Went here for a family celebration, on arrival we were scolded for being late, when in fact we were 10 minutes early ! The décor was very dated, as was the style and delivery of service. The food was luke warm and average. the table was wobbly and the place was draughty. There was nothing special about this place at all and it was vastly over priced for what we had to eat. The clue should have been that only one other table was occupied on our visit. A total disaster. We will not be returning and I would urge others not to book unless you want old fashioned décor and 1970's food and service.!!

The staff made us fell very welcome for our meal this evening. Along with our ordered meal we also had samples of food from the chef such as lovely home made foccacia, starter samples such arancini balls and smoked salmon. We plumped for the chateaubriand and with a gentle suggestion our maîte'd, we plumped to have it medium rather than our usual well done. We've been converted to eat medium from here on in, it was simply delicious, along with the rest of the meal - and the wine was sublime, served at a perfect temperature. We look forward to another visit very soon.

Really surprised at the food and service at this restaurant as was expecting better. The pages in the wine list were all falling out and needed a glue stick to stick them back in (plenty of evidence of the previous attempts...). Wines were relatively expensive but had a decent bottle after careful choosing. Strange menu choices - no obvious theme to the menu, so starters were smoked salmon (decent), vegetable soup (ok) and duck and goats cheese tart (no idea, sounded too strange). Mains were slightly better - lamb was good but pasta with tomato sauce very ordinary.

A group of us regularly visit the restaurant for an after-business dinner together. Each time we go, it becomes more and more chaotic. The set dinner menu last night was chicken, fish or pasta as a main (not a sniff of red meat in sight), and the desserts had all been substituted. The orders were taken and with each course there was someone waiting for their food because of errors either in the kitchen or with the order taking. One of the party discovered a piece of sharp plastic in the terrine (the explanation was that it comes out of a plastic container - so it's bought in, not made fresh), others' starters arrived so late and were not what was ordered that the food was just accepted. The under-salted main courses were cold by the time everyone was served, and then the side orders arrived after we had all finished eating. Oddly, an order for mixed vegetables was translated as "chips" when it got to the kitchen and 3 bowls of bulk-buy catering chips were put on the table. The desserts were served with fluorescent desiccated coconut all over the plate and the combinations offered (sickly sweet banana cake with sweet ice cream) was just too much.We wondered if the old chef and front of house staff had gone, which was why the food and service was a bit lacking, but we couldn't be bothered to ask.The junior waiting staff were all very pleasant and the room itself is clean and bright. For now, I don't think we will be going back there to eat and will find another restaurant to go to.

This is the second time we have visited Hawtrey's restaurant at The Barn Hotel. We were there celebrating a family birthday, and we had booked for the Taster Menu. The food is amazing and does not disappoint - each of the 6 courses accompanied with a selected glass of wine. It's a wonderful way to celebrate - not something you'd do every day but certainly a great experience. Our waitress, Valentina, was very friendly and warm towards us. Brian, who I think may be the Maitre D, is a wonderfully friendly gentleman, overseeing everything without being intrusive at all. He even insisted that I take his arm as he escorted us to the door when we were leaving - I may have been ever so slightly wobbly after all the different glasses of wine, too!As a treat for a special occasion I would certainly recommend the experience of the Taster Menu. If it's a birthday they may even bring out a special extra treat of a selection of petit four with a candle and sing you happy birthday.

Hawtrey's restaurant had a nice atmosphere and was full even though it was mid-week. The food was exquisite and very filling. Amuse-bouche were presented before each meal which meant I couldn't manage a starter. The atmosphere was really Christmassy with a massive Christmas tree and a lovely open fire which really got everyone in the Christmas spirit. There really was nothing to fault - if you are having a big family gathering it is the place to go - you will not be disappointed. I could even take a meal home for my husband who injured his back and could not join us -with all the plates and a jug for the brandy sauce - what great customer service!! I will return the clean dishes tomorrow. Thank you very much to the manager, chefs and all the staff we had a fabulous time.

I came there on Saturday with my friends.. Wow, one of the best place I've ever been to.. I've travelled the world, ate in a million of places, but the food here in the barn hotel was out if this world. Next time, will definitely compliment the chef personally. One of the best..

We have stayed at the Barn Hotel, of which the restaurant is part, and have been treated really well. On its own I would recommend the Hotel. This trip we had taken a close friend with us and we had praised Hawtrys for the food. So after a long weekend in London we sat down for our Saturday evening meal. We were not disappointed. The staff were really friendly, attentive and helpful. The waiter ( I might be doing him a disservice there) really new the menu and helped with the choices. Without picking out I particulat course I can honestly say that I have not had a better meal in a long time.

Evening meal with friends was excellent. The standard of cuisine is of the highest. If I have one small gripe, it was in respect of the wine. It is expensive and at the lower end, poor quality. But having said that the food was very good, in selection, preparation and presentation. Full marks to the Chef.

Booked through Open Table but, upon arrival, the restaurant had no trace of our booking. Fortunately they were able to lay up a table for four of us...while we stood around in our coats! It would have been good for our coats to be taken and for us to be shown to some seating while we were waiting. We were happy to find we could order from the set menu on a Saturday evening and we enjoyed the complimentary amuse bouche items, the various home-made breads and the assortment of butters provided. Starters were all delicious. Mains followed for two of us but the other two mains took so long to arrive, those of us with rapidly cooling food were invited to start ours'. The three mains ordered from the set menu were well cooked and beautifully present. Unfortunately, my husband's skate, ordered from the a la carte menu, although equally beautifully presented, was undercooked, pink inside and cold...presumably they had rushed to finish cooking it when the rest of our table's meals were already ready to serve. He did not complain or ask for it to be cooked further as he would have been eating by himself but unsurprisingly he did not enjoy it at all. Happily, I am able to report he was not ill! Puddings for those who had it were excellent but my husband, who is diabetic, chose not to order the only option for him - the over-priced cheeseboard - which, from memory, included chutney and grapes, both of which are full of sugar and no use to a diabetic...a cheaper, alternative cheeseboard, without these extras would be a useful item to include on the menu. Three of us enjoyed our meal...no prizes for guessing who didn't!

This restaurant was always good. Now the main courses and desserts are even better. Background music is handy to add conviviality when the restaurant is not full, and ensure nobody hears you talking and you are not distracted by others. The three course set lunch at just under £20 per person is great for a meal of this quality. You must budget for paying extra for a glass of wine, coffee, and service.Dessert was a delight of colours and artistry, with a pattern of pink strawberry (?) sauce edged with chocolate.Service seems a bit friendly and jollier than it used to be.

A nice place for Afternoon Tea. It was recommended to us by a friend. We enjoyed the ambiance of the lounge and could view the gardens. (We did not go out and enjoy them.) The sandwiches and cakes were delicious but bite-size only. Great for those on a diet. Lucky for me a kind waiter realised I was famished and prepared a platter of vegetarian sandwiches. Good man! We would have given excellent but for the wedding and funeral at the same time. Hence the slow service and too many people. It felt awkward - we did not know whether to smile or look sad. The Barn apologised and informed that we should have been told when we reserved. We will give them another try .. but I will ensure I eat before we visit.

I'm struggling to reconcile the glowing reviews of Hawtrey's with my recent experience of Sunday lunch here. I dine out regularly - from high street chains, to the fine dining end of the spectrum - and it's been a long time since I've eaten in a place that promises so much, yet delivers so little. I have to wonder if the reviewers giving 5 out of 5 here are just staff members masquerading as real life punters. My first gripe was that while the food menus were brought to the table promptly, there was a palpable look of surprise at the concept my wife and I might want to order any wine. The wine list duly fetched, we perused drink options while our food order was taken ...but then the waiter high-tailed it before we could give him the wine order too.Cue 5 minutes of non-attention as we hoped someone would come back to take our drinks order. Giving up, I headed to the bar located immediately outside the restaurant entrance to ask for a bottle of white. "You're only allowed to order wine if you're dining in the restaurant," came the response. I pointed out that I was dining in the restaurant, as they could clearly see, and asked them to send someone in. When the bottle of white we ordered turned up, it was warm. Straight off the store cupboard shelf I'd say. I told the waiter I couldn't drink it like this, but was happy to let it sit in an ice bucket until it was drinkable. Despite this, he still insisted on trying to pour us each a measure of warm wine. With our hands covering our wine glasses, he eventually backed down.Sadly, the quality of the 3 course lunch did not make up for the comedy service. The deep fried crab-shaped starter tasted just like ...well, a deep fried crab-shaped thing. The chicken ballotine main was marginally better, but still bland. And my cheese course (£3.50 supplement, on top of £25 for three courses) was a selection of different coloured and textured items, that all tasted of nothing in particular.Hawtrey's is not the fine dining establishment it masquerades as. Sunday lunch for two with (warm) wine left me just shy of £100. I have eaten twice as well, for half as much, hundreds of times in recent years. No amount of nice uniforms, white-gloved waiters and politeness (for all their faults, they are extremely polite) can make up for the fact that Hawtrey's has ideas way above its station, and is populated by staff who'd have Gordon Ramsay's temples bulging with fury, if ever he fancied parachuting in to fix things.

I'm in two minds about Hawtrey's. Part of me feels it would be great if the outstanding chef and waiting staff got the level of custom they deserve for such a splendid, good value offering; another part of me likes the peace and quiet!Food and presentation were to their usual high standard and service was delightful. If you're anywhere in the vicinity of Ruislip, go there.

I eat out A LOT, because of my job and also - well I love good food. This restaurant lists amongst the best and the meal we had as a business lunch last week left all us awe-inspired by the superb presentation but exceptional flavoursI suppose because its within the hotel and off the beaten track that this gem isn't as well known or feted as it should be, because for £19.95 for the set lunch, you won't find better value, or better food anywhere in LondonI shall be coming here again and again - what a find!

The log fire in the lounge was a warm welcome on a cold day. The menu changes daily. We were offered soup, a shellfish dish, or egg, as a starter. All looked interesting. The main course of lamb, cooked medium, was perfect. I asked for them to write Happy Birthday on my dessert plate which they did. I had told them my first name and spelled it and thought they might add that, but they didn't. Never mind. Good enough.Coffee was unexciting, although they had brown sugar lumps.A good place for a birthday party in elegant surroundings. (Although if you want paper hats, crackers, sparklers, singing waiters and souvenir photos provided by management and free drinks go to a big chain.)

As other reviewers have said, it is rather expensive, but worth every pence, penny, cent or whatever your currency is.

4 adults and an 8 year old child dined here on a Monday evening. We were the only guests! The menu was interesting with some unusual dishes e.g.wild boar. We had 3 courses, drinks before and a bottle of Fleurie and the cost inc 10% service was £222. For the quality of the food, service and ambience, it was excellent value for money. We will certainly go again.

Went with friends for dinner which turned into a very enjoyable evening. The restaurant is an attractive, comfortable and elegant venue with good sized tables, spaced well apart. The service was efficient, friendly and professional. We started with a selection of canapés, followed by an amuse bouche and bread served with a variety of flavoured butters.Several of us chose a starter of soft shell crab - superb, and the main course of lamb was cooked to perfection and served with a good selection of vegetables. Portions were just right and the presentation of the food was delightful. A pre-desert followed the main course (passion fruit sorbet) and there was a choice of three deserts. All this for £25 per head (the fixed price 3 course menu) - really good value for such a high standard of cooking. This experience was very different from a visit last year which disappointed us, but now we have sampled the true standard of Hawtrey's we can't wait to go again and introduce other friends. Thank you all at Hawtrey's.

Group of four adults, really enjoyed our lunch with very attentive staff constantly at hand when we needed anything. Unfortunately the soup wasn't quite hot enough, but this was taken away and a replacement bowl was hot and delicious. The menu isn't extensive but suited our party and we relaxed and enjoyed the surroundings especially as not cramped or noisy.

We visited on a Tuesday night with friends and waited for more than five minutes at the entrance to the restaurant before anyone even acknowledged we were there. We were immediately asked what drinks we wanted but it took ages for menus to arrive. Eventually our order was taken and we were brought some pleasant canapés, bread and a little later, an amuse bouche. However, our starter did not arrive until 1 hour 45 minutes after we sat down. A couple of times a waiter said "your food is coming" and I eventually had to ask if there was a problem in the kitchen and was told "shortage of staff". By the time our main course arrived we had been at our table for 2 and a quarter hours. We never received an apology and the service overall was not acceptable. The food was OK but quite honestly, having waited for so long, we really didn't have any appetite left. The main courses were just about adequate in size but certainly not generous. We didn't bother with desert. The service was really poor and an explanation for the delays, without having to ask for it, would have been appreciated and even a simple gesture of complimentary coffee would have been nice.We will not go again and if asked by friends, would not recommend.

Every single time I've ever tried to eat here during my stay at the Barn, something has gone wrong. First time, I tried to order food at 10pm to be told that the bar was shut and that I could have a sandwich. It wasn't even a good sandwich, it was terrible!Second time, the cooker was broke, meaning yet again - yes, you guessed it - I was offered a sandwich. This time, I knew better than to risk it and opted for the local McDonalds instead. So in short, I've sort-of eaten here once, and it was a massive disappointment. Phone ahead before driving here for your Sunday lunch - the cooker may be broke!
