Hawk Battlesbridge Wickford in Chelmsford

I used to love the Sunday roast but something has changed. Smaller portions, fewer vegetables, and having to pay for cauliflower cheese is not value for money. Things change so maybe I will try somewhere else.

Had a wonderful meal at the hawk! We go yearly as it's a special treat. The entertainment really made it lovely. Staff are great, venue is clean and well looked after. Only issue I could find is the lights were quite low so not only the waitress but I also bumped my head on them. They must have been designed to be low over a table and the tables have been changed I assume? We preferred to be where we could hear the entertainment, so our waitress was kind enough to give us a table in the area next to the entertainment and we really enjoyed ourselves. We usually find desert to be too much, however we loved the option of small desert and warm drink, the desert I think is still sizable on this option too! The entertainment kept us there to drink more and have more than we would usually do so it's very worthwhile 🙂 looking forward to our next visit. Thank you! (Also to add - there's no specific dietary catering although they do offer to work to make a specific meal) I would probably visit once a month as this is local to me and food quality is good if we can be more strongly assured about lactose and gluten free as I visit restaurants regularly with someone who requires the dietary restrictions.

The Hawk as always was very busy. Our table was ready on time and they had taken note on the booking that we would have a large dog with us and the table was perfect. Our server was friendly and efficient, she helped me get the new app on my phone which got me a very enjoyable glass of champagne.We were a table of 3 who each had 3 courses and each one was perfect, without a doubt the best roast in the area. Well done to the Hawk and all the staff.

We tend to default to the Hawk as we know it is reliable and good value. Needs to get up to date on alcohol free beer offering though. Lovely pre-christmas meal.

Nice couple of days in Essex with besties! Booked the hawk for 1.30 pm lunch! Obviously they were busy with xmas round the corner, but not overly busy! Ŵ sat for 25 minutes before being approached to order! We all ordered our food and a drink! No starter! The 2 x medium reds were £8 each and not very good ! The strawberry ciders were better value and seemed good! Sadly we sat for nearly 45 minutes waiting for food ! The table next to ours orderd well after us and got theirs first which really annoyed one of our group,!! When the lamb dishes arrived they were missing 1 item off the dishes and when asked a waitress why she said she would check but never came back to us! I had cod and chips with mushy peas! The fish was big but tasteless and the batter was thin and insipid in colour! The chips were warm at best and half were under the fish and soggy! The minted peas were in pureed form! Pretty horrible! The toilets are up 2 flights of stairs so no good for old patrons! To sum up! The meal and drinks were expensive! The malbec was bland! The meals were generally not great And it took over 2 hours to get and eat our lunch ,which is pretty unacceptable even if you are busy!! By the bye, we had to park a couple of hundred yards up the road as we were unable to get into the small pub car park! I cannot recommend this pub for a meal out as no one was happy with their meals generally! Shame as it is in a nice setting!

Had the most lovely dinner here this evening, the most friendly staff I don’t think I’ve ever had better service. The food was artisan but for such an affordable price. We want to say thank you Stacey for being extremely accommodating to a nut allergy on our table. 10/10!

We had our ladies lunch in one of the dining domes - it was wonderful. What a lovely experience, would certainly recommend. We hope they keep them as we would book again.

Went for lunch and had a proper tasty burger, sitting out in the garden on the really comfy seating, then chilled in the garden with drinks after. Will be back for more summer nights for sure!

I've wanted to visit this place for a couple on months now so waited till my birthday there was 7 of us we was first told the was no beef only on trio and sharers so four of us brought two shares we was all disappointed when 1 slice off beef come out with 2 small pieces of pork 1 was 3/4 of fat and 2 bit of chicken and veg all this for £50 for 2 people we did say about it to the Waitress and she did bring out some more mate for us, which was nice, but the food wasn't hot It was Luke warm we was disappointed with the experience and then service charge on top Boy going for the pictures on the website he looks absolutely fantastic, but unfortunately it wasn't what he was expecting Further to your reply on first impressions, I don't think we will come back. There are a lot better places out there and cheaper as well for more food same quality.

3 of us were seated immediately despite arriving in the middle of Sunday lunch service without a reservation. Good service and food, plenty of options on the menu over and above the traditional roast offerings. Car park was almost full, but understandable given the day & time. Highly recommended & will definitely be back.

Booked for my son’s 40th for 4 of us. Requested table near any of the fire places. Given a table as far away from everything in the furthest corner. One sheet of paper with menu on, 90% of menu was crossed off, so very limited food on offer. Waitress was grumpy. Another couple who sat down read menu & walked out. Then us 4 walked out. Total waste of time there. Won’t be visiting again. Wouldn’t mind but I belong to a ladies group (approx 20) which all attend & have a meal once a month there. Unfortunately I’ll be passing the news on

I was recommended this place by a relative and had great expectations. Unfortunately myself and partner were very disappointed. We were seated in the very back dining area which felt like someone’s dining room as opposed to a restaurant/ pub, meaning we missed out on the pub/ Christmassy atmostsphere, decor and general cosy feeling, as well as the live singer. It felt like we had been placed out of the way. The wait for the starters (cold starters bread) seemed too long, and the main courses for both myself and partner were almost inedible. The food was dry and overcooked with no flavour. The only good thing about the place were the staff who were pleasant and friendly. It is very unlikely we will return.

Really really poor experience from start to finish. We booked a table only about 45 minutes prior to our arrival...they failed to tell us that their grill/extractor was broken which meant they had almost all the children's menu not available...you would think they would mentioned this when we book a table, with a child. The service team really didnt seem to care for it, offered absolutely no work around or extra service, it was essentially a take it or leave it for a hungry 4 year old, who ended up having to order something that she did not like (£8 for just the main of a kids meal, all other local places do a 2 or 3 course meal with a drink for kids at this price). Service was slow, 1 of the adult pizzas had a base that was so hard the supplied pizza cutter couldnt get through it and the Vegetarian burger as quite possibly the cheapest option they could have possibly found, in probably 50 different meat replacements or veg-burgers this really was cheap and awful...should have known when they told me it's cooked in the oven and not on the (broken!) grill! The rest of the plate was rather miserable to, just some chips in a small bowl...that was it. No salad, no garnishing. For £17 it was very very poor value vs pretty much every other restaurant in the area. Unfortunately, this really isnt a one off. Come here once a year and never had a good experience for one reason or another. 3.5 rating on TR tells you all you need to know. Avoid, lots of other better and much cheaper options in the area....i just don't think the staff really care here; never show it in person when things aren't right and never provide a worthy follow up to reviews.

Nice menu with loads of choices for everyone. We all thought the food could have been hotter. Our server Senita was lovely. Just right, attentive but not overly. Great job

Delicious food and beautiful setting. My dining experience at the Hawk was truly exceptional! Stacey was very attentive and helpful. The food was really outstanding! My favourite was the pan fried sea bass fillets.

The new menu is looking really good, very tasty, really enjoyed the featherblade beef on the duo, never misses the spot!!

Went for Sunday Roast, extremely busy, staff really nice but service was on the slow side, then just finishing desert and was presented with the bill as we only had limited time which we were not told when booking.

Fabulous meal as always. Senita looked after us very well. Timings were superb. Attention great. Really enjoyable evening.

We come here regularly and usually have no complaints and are very happy with the service and food but today we both had lamb which is one of the most expensive dishes on the menu, only to be told when the dishes arrived that there was no mint sauce! No biggie really I know but not really acceptable when you have lamb on the menu not to have mint sauce which is it’s accompaniment!!

Nice food and atmosphere, nice cozy Gastro pub. Service was excellent and Sinitta our waitress was really helpful and friendly. Will definitely go there again.

My mum had her 70th birthday 🎂 at the Hawk. The food was great, but the service was spot on. So was an overall great day. I was stuffed. I will review if I like the place. If I don't, I put nothing.

Am sitting in the Hawk Battlesbridge a table for 9. The table was booked by my Daughter in law . On arriving I was informed that there was no steak, burgers and half the menu not available. When food was brought out quite a lot was cold. And then we were told that they had run out of Yorkshire puddings ( just as the main meals were being served) my fish & chips was retuned as the fish meat was not cooked it should be white and flakey The second time was only marginally better . Lots of I’m sorry from the waitresses.

The staff in The Hawk make it worth the visit alone! They really went out of their way to make my dad’s 80th birthday special, especially Sinita (hope I’ve spelled that right!) who was fabulous and felt like she was a friend by the time we left, and the lovely lady at the front desk. Very attentive staff, very helpful regarding my fish allergy, making sure the kitchen staff were fully aware.

I live down the road but hardly go in there anymore as they during the week only have 1 person behind the bar serving both the bar and restaurant drinks! (weekends 2 people). The restaurant drinks seem to take priority over the people standing at the bar so especially if they are making cocktails you end up waiting a ridiculous time for a drink! Not acceptable at over 6 pounds a pint. If you’re going to have a bar, please have bar staff!

5 of us had lunch at The Hawk yesterday and we were very impressed with the ambience, the service and the staff especially Stacy, our lovely, bubbly waitress who did a magnificent job looking after us. We had Starters, Mains, mini deserts with a cocktail finishing off with coffees. Everything was beautifully cooked and delicious. This is how a restaurant should be run. So a big thank you to Stacy who is an asset to your establishment and we are looking forward to coming again very soon.

Lovely Sunday roast and great service from our waitress Serina, she really looked after us even though she was very busy.

First time we went today cannot fault the food had sea bass and side cauliflower cheese And the fish and chips huge And mini dessert and coffee Best meal out in a long while Both were excellent the staff were friendly and nothing too much trouble food was hot and no wait Definitely will be back

We were meeting friends we hadn’t seen for eight years, we were made to feel very welcome and not pressured for time at all, we had a lot to catch up on and thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, definitely the best food we have had at a pub lunch in the Rayleigh/Battlesbridge area
