Harlech Tandoori in Gwynedd

I have been going here for many years whilst camping in the area. Yes it is run down and untidy, but the food has always been good. Tonight they asked for cash, which we didn't have so they had to relent and we paid by card, so what was the issue? We had to ask for a receipt and were given a hand written one. All this has left us a bit uncomfortable and we have decided we won't be going again.

Food was absolutely, taste less and over priced, 3 bits of chicken in a meal, rice hard and nann bread just raw garlic on top. Korma had lumps of hard coconut paste. Would never venture here again. Just picked it upro take away, the restaurant smelt damp and looked dirty paint crumpled of walls,server stunk of booze and tried to be very touchy feely with me. Never wanted to get out of anywhere so quick.

Worst place I have been in for food. Overpriced dirty restaurant. Please don't go there . Food was terrible, place was not clean, leaking ceiling, mouldy walls. Drinks were flat .

Amazing food great friendly service and definitely not overpriced!

The food was good, we had a special Harlech ,korma, balti and madras. We all love Indian food. The front man who everyone mentions is a little different 😘 but he looked after us well. Made us laugh. Could not fault him. While we were there they had loads of takeaways. Locals too.

You cannot fault the food but you’ll need to eat with your eyes closed. The place is rancid. It’s not fit to be used as a restaurant.

Very surprising place, really not welcoming, even if the food is ok. The boss welcomes you as if you were nothing, not a smile, not a friendly word, you have the impression of bothering him. His tie is hanging on a coat rack in the room, the chairs are smashed, the paint is in very poor condition. All this could be acceptable if the boss would do something about it. Finally, probably the only restaurant in the whole of the United Kingdom that does not take credit cards! In short… no choice, because no restaurant was open!

We were hungry and braved the contempuous looks of the proprietor. The atmosphere was cold and reminded me of the wait for my recent colonoscopy.

Ok, so….. living in Leeds we have many Indian restaurants to choose from so maybe spoilt for choice. We recently stayed in Harlech and had seen that the village had an Indian restaurant so decided that would be an option for one night. From the outside it didn’t look great but decided that we would get food to takeout, being honest it was the only place open on Monday evening. Walking in I should have listened to my instincts, the place looked dated and run down. The place was empty and two people (staff no customers) were sitting in the dark with no lights on. I still ordered food to go thinking books and cover. Hate leaving rude or negative comments but this had to be the worst curry I’ve ever had. Onions bhajis were burnt and tasteless. Chicken Rogan Josh was just a basic flavourless paste with a tin of tomato stirred in result a brown and red mix with no taste. It all went in the bin. Sorry guys maybe we hit a bad day looking at other reviews but neither myself or my partner ate the food. Definitely would not go back!

Food was extremely over priced. Chips undercooked. When paying approximately 300% more for something so simple as a portion of chips you would somewhat expect a little effort to make them appealing. Phone staff rude, reception staff rude. No comment on the actual state of the establishments interior. Personally won't eat there again but if your desperate, and in harlech.. why not? The foods a gamble and at least you'll be armed knowing that there prices are to high for the quality. At least you'll be prepared.

Very rude and ignorant guy serving the food ! Like a trip to faulty towers , decor very bad, paint peeling off everywhere and ripped chairs, didn't feel cean although thankfully the food was OK! and none of us were ill. The place was empty apart from one other table and they left soon after we arrived and we understood why at the end of our meal. The guy cleared the plates while other members of our group were still eating and was constantly hovering round us and saying can I have my plate , can I have my dish 🤔 we felt like he thought we were going to steal them, he never once smiled and we felt like an inconvenience. The lager which was advertised as draught came in a can and cost £5.95 each ! The coke was flat and horrible and when I said it was undrinkable he was very abrupt and said it came out of a can ,putting down abruptly 2 more cans and giving us disapproving looks we felt we dare not touch them ! The cook did come out before we left and we thanked him for the food which tasted ok but the whole experience was a disgrace and one we will not be repeating.

I have no idea why the rating here isn't much higher - their food is EXCELLENT. They have an extensive menu of delicious and very reasonably priced Indian dishes; the service is always friendly, helpful, and fast; and they're nearly always open. Bonus: you can sit and have a pint in the Lion and they'll bring your dinner over to you when it's ready. For take-away you really can't beat Harlech Tandoori. Highly recommended.

What a meal... we have tried this place year ago and I will be honest and it wasn't the best... but my god they have upped their game. Delicious and full of flavour. We have a take away as we live local!! Not a bad meal in the past year full of flavour and meat... Awsome take away. And friendly guy .. thanka=diolch

Said they were open to 2200 went there after a pint at 2130 closed, but they did make me a takeaway. Hence the stars .

This is lovely little restaurant, the food was delicious and service was excellent. It was quiet when we went so managed to have a nice chat with the very pleasant owner. Certainly will be returning here.

We’re in Harlech a lot but have never tried the food here due to the reviews, but last night we thought we’d give it a try so went in and ordered a takeaway. There were only 4 people in there and it does need a refurbishment but the food was actually very good! I did have to wait a little while for someone to come and take my order, and he was a little abrupt, but I had butter chicken and mushroom pilau rice and my husband had lamb dupiaza and boiled rice and both were piping hot and we could have shared one rice as there was so much of it, and it was very tasty. We would definitely go back.

Arrived in Harlech on Tuesday 29th Aug. Loved the quaint old worlde atmosphere of Harlech, but nowhere was open for our evening meal.....except this restaurant! Walked in and was greeted by an elderly gent who sat us at our decrepit table and even more decrepit chairs. He asked if we wanted cobra, husband had one. He asked if we wanted poppadoms. We said no thank you. He then demanded, you want poppadoms? My Grandson did, so we had 3. At the cost of £4.75! What a joke, we are given them free at our local Indian. Ordered the meal which at best was mediocre. Asked for the bill. You can only pay in cash or by cheque with card!! Who carries a cheque book around these days?? We paid cash, and got out of that dirty place as quickly as possible. Would I recommend? Definitely not!

Spectacular food and the service is so quick. The decor is OK. They staff are very friendly.

Food is really great in this place. We had tarka dhal, chana saag and a veg dansak – all prepared beautifully and tasted great. Waiter/manager accommodated non-dairy diet. The waiter (and I assume manager) ended up being incredibly rude and hostile to us, unfortunately. Seemed to stem from me calling him out for serving us 2 can-poured pints of Cobra, when the menu stated it was from the tap. There was no one in there, so was very obvious when he tried to subtly crack the cans and pour them out of view of the bar. Now, I don't go out for Indian food to get drunk. But a cold pint of draught Cobra definitely compliments the meal and adds to the experience. If there's a shiny Cobra tap at the bar and you order one, I think it's fair to expect the staff to tell you if the tap is off, rather than pour it out of a can, hope you don't notice, and still charge a fiver. After I pointed it out, he made an excuse about the menus not being up to date, and then just continued to be massively rude to us for the rest of our meal. Put our food on the table with the least amount of verbal interaction possible, and then was very keen to take our plates before we'd finished or were ready to leave. There were 2 tables being served including us - low pressure on kitchen and waiting staff, he just wanted to see the back of us. This is terrible service. I know that a lot of restaurants are struggling at the moment, maybe that leads them to make choices they don't want to make. But if that means treating your customers like mugs, at least put your hands up or have a back up when you get called up on it. Apologise, make a joke, even brush it off and pretend it didn't happen. Anything is better than making the customer(s) feel totally uncomfortable for their whole meal and absolutely determined not to leave a tip or good review. Good food though!

Don’t be distracted by the decor, the food was okay and was as good as any average Indian restaurant. However…and amusingly it was like going into a themed 1970s comedy sketch! We walked into a restaurant with one table occupied by a family of five. We requested a table for two and was asked to sit and wait whilst the only Waiter, in his 70s silver trousers, said he’d check. He returned moments later and hilariously showed us to a table for two in the empty restaurant! He then said “two Cobras?”. To which we replied, one for me and gin and tonic for my wife. Silver trousers waiter walked off to prepare the drinks. We heard the crack of a can being opened and returned with a “Cobra”, (not sure if it was!), and a gin and tonic in a tall glass, one piece of ice and warm tonic…straight out of the 1970s! However, the food was very nice and I couldn’t fault it. The experience was more amusing than poor! Do try it with all this in mind, it’ll make you chuckle, but leave you satisfied!

Got a take away fantastic Tara Dhal Main meals ,Meat was precooked then added to curry base sauce so disappointed not cooked in the sauce Chapattis poor.Friwndly service .But disappointed. My local Aagrah in Wakefield is the best I have tasted.

We had planned a takeaway, on a Wednesday night, only to get no answer on the phone and find its closed. Extremely disappointed. No notices either on the door or online for the reason. What a way to run a business.

Slightly tired decor on the outside doesn’t inspire confidence and the interior is similarly tired, but the menu is extensive, the food is good and the wine list is cheap - we paid £150 for 4 hungry blokes, 4 beers and 2 bottles of wine. I wouldn’t rush back nor would I avoid it. Oddly for a Friday night at 9pm, we were the only customers.

Got a takeaway from here. They missed a portion of rice. They labelled the plain and peshwari naans the same thing so we couldn’t tell the difference. The food was greasy and generally not good. There was a puddle of grease at the bottom of the bag.

Give this place a try as the food is very good, but don't be put off by the broken taps, the single use alarm in the toilet, the way the pictures are hung, the carefully painted walls, the peeling paint and the wall of coat hangers. Lastly if you wanted to pay by card... think again, but you might be lucky and get a lift to the cash machine in their company jaguar, you will be amazed how mamy warning lights are illuminated and the car still works, it does need a brick under the front wheel to stop it rolling back. When we are back in Harlech we are coming here again.

Lovely low key curry house. Food delicious. Atmosphere and fittings are basic but embrace it and you'll have a brilliant evening.

Don't let the tired decor and limited drinks put you off! The food was hot, fresh, cooked to order and served quickly. Friendly staff. It's the only place to eat out or pick up a takeaway in Harlech on a Sunday night, certainly on the early May Bank Holiday.

Re opened just had a cracking tikka bhuna keep it up and weel be back for more live locally and the area has been missing a good Indian restaurant friendly staff will be returning thank you

I just recently been to this very nice restaurant and I enquired about the ratings. I have been to the kitchen, it was very nice and clean. Especially I asked the owner why the rating was 0, he told me he changed the company and didn't tell the health officer, that's why the 0 rating is there. This rating will be updated very soon. Overall, the food was splendid. Especially the service, it was very good!!! I recommend you not to look at the rating, the king prawn shutki was my favourite in Madras Hot. Would do anything to make them well known 👏

Says it's open every day. My family and I have eaten here a few years ago and fancied this for our meal tonight (Thursday, 7pm). My parents, grandparents, and myself decided on what to order, then called three times to no answer. My vegitarian korma had a lump of chicken in it. Having been vegitarian all of my life, this has left me physically sick.
