Been eating their food for many years. Their fish and chip menu is just as you would expect and everything is good; from the pies to the fish and everything in between. Their Chinese food is also really good. We like the chicken curry and special fried rice, the salt and pepper ribs and my favourite is the crispy chicken with sesame seeds and chilli - no one does it better. Best to call and order before going to pick up they will give you an order number and a pick up time. Also they only take cash!

I really fancied a fish n chips tonight and with it being a bank holiday weekend most places were actually shut. Happy friend however, wasn’t. I have had their battered sausage, chips and fish cake before and they were really good so thought why not give the cod, pies and curry sauce a try. I can say that Happy Friend is probably the best place to get fish and chips in Leagrave. Considering they are actually more of a Chinese takeaway that does fish and chips, they are actually really good at it. The curry was very full of flavour, the cod freshly fried, covered in a very crispy, tasty batter. The pies were really nice, Pukka pies… chips also very very nice and they aren’t shy with portions either. Price wise it’s amazing and for the quality, I’d happily pay more. I honestly wish I took photos but once I took a bite out of the fish I was taken aback… I wasn’t even paying attention to my movie anymore, let alone think about photos LOL. The people and extremely friendly. The shop is family owned so you know every penny spent is for a good reason and it goes in the pockets of a bunch of very deserving people. I forgot to ask her name but the lady that served me was amazing, happy to engage in conversation & we had a few laughs making the experience even more enjoyable. Definitely recommend. I’ve got to try their Chinese next. ❤️

Ordered chow mein and egg fried rice from here today and the rice was awful. NO flavour, NO colour, literally had 3 pieces of egg in the rice and the rice was uncooked and needed to boil for longer. It seems they’ve put all there efforts into the fish and chips and none into the Chines food. To serve such a poor quality dish to a customer is disgraceful.

I live in Devon, but visit Luton often as my family is here!! Best Chinese!!!! Best fish and chips!!!! The fish is incredible!! The portion sizes are extremely generous. The chips themselves taste great!!! Good quality potatoes. The beef curry is my go-to if I don't have fish and chips

The fresh chips were nicely done, only thing I didn't like was they mixed some older chips in with them and they were soggy,limp and brown,apart from that the fresh chips were good.

Best fish and chips in Luton. They certainly don’t skimp on portions, always freshly cooked and delicious, whether or choose chicken, fish or anything else. Chinese is delicious too. Family run, very friendly staff. Our family have been going here for well over 10 years, nowhere else is as good. They do get busy Thursday, Friday and Saturday but the food is well worth the wait.

Worst fish I ever had in my life. Cooked straight from freezer , deep inside fish was still cold , the fish it self was so has sounds like fish was refreeze many times. Stay away please .not worth a penny

Just spent £2.30 on large chips to take away. Got home, they were horrible greasy and soggy never go there again.

best chips on the planet, lovely king prawn curry, chow mein, prawn and chicken balls, prawn toast, and a great duck with pancakes -never had a bad meal from here, had lovely cod from here too, very friendly staff too.

Best chippy/Chinese around. I travel from dunstable to get this. Also I really like the family that run it.

Delicious food great value for money

Wanted a treat leading up to xmas (23 Dec) and was advised against going to Tangs (which is closest to my home) so I remembered driving past here. IT IS EXCELLENT! The fish is delicious (batter is heavenly) and it coats the chips in a delicious fish-like aroma (best when its lightly salted). Someone also mentioned the portion size in another review and I have to agree it was huge (chips were heaped generously and fish was around 30cm) - had to finish it in 2 sittings at home as it was so filling (and I'm not exactly a skinny person). Mine cost £5.90 (large) which I found worth it after seeing the size and how long it took to finish. The staff were very kind and informative on how long I would have to wait (6 mins to fry each fish), and speedy while packing it up to take away. I think you have to buy dips like tartar sauce and ketchup pouches (25p each) which isn't too bad. There are seats for waiting, otherwise it is purely take away to eat at home. I think a small portion costs just over £5, medium is near £5.50 and large is £5.90. My brother brought home some 'high-end' fish&chips a fews days after xmas but it was no where near as good as Happy Friend! Thank you again, my family were happy and stuffed!

The happy friend in my opion is the best chip shop serving chinese food around . They will serve a half portion of chips unlike a lot of others saving waste. The spare ribs and currys are wonderful and good sized portions very reasonably priced ....well worth a visit

A really good value fish and chip shop serving lovely food to take away and always tasty and good portions. Service is always efficient and staff are friendly. This is also a Chinese takeaway we use both and as already stated the food is great we think it is the best in the area. The Chinese food is always very flavoursome and all dishes taste different unlike at some establishments whatever you order it all tastes the same not so here. We recomend heartily this resturant.

I'm sad to have to review this place again and this time in the negative. It's probably been longer since I last visited, I swore never to go back there. Only in desperate times... whatever that means in the given context. Value for money is no longer how these guys operate. 90% of the time these days their oil is dirty and you can taste it in the chips and whatever else has been fried. Their portion control of their chips make them the opposite of value for money. If they were nice, clean and fresh tasting all the time you wouldn't mind paying but they're not that. It's 2017 and I haven't been back there only for other people upon request, never myself and they always regret it. Sorry. Bake n Fry opposite McDonalds is better or even better Luton Town Fish and Chips on Calverton Road, this where I go and I'm not local. They're open all day from 11am - 9pm 👌🏽
