Hanson at the Chelsea in Swansea

We visited on a Monday night as a party of three and the food, starters and mains were all excellent. Stand out on the starters was the goats cheese tart and my Pork pate and pickle was very nicely presented. The cod in the cod Kiev was fresh and flaky. Both Halibut mains were superb. Attentive service and overall an excellent meal and good value for money.

We saw that this little place was open and went in, because we were on holiday and were feeling good. It is basically one room, served by ONE waitress (I forget her name, very sorry). It was one of the best meal we have ever had! Delicious food! Wonderful service! Great place and simply wonderful.. Everyone from everywhere or anywhere should go. Best restaurant we have ever been to. Go! Go! Go to this!!

I came here last night with my partner for a special occasion. The food was absolutely amazing and the waiter and waitress who served us were very polite. The only down side was when I asked about which was the lowest calorie coffee they had one of the other waitresses said to me “to be honest, it comes in small mugs and after all you’ve had and with the wine it’s not going to hurt”. I track my calories and had hardly eaten much all day, I chose the boiled potatoes instead of chips and gave my onion rings to my partner, plus had smoked salmon for my starter, I thought the response was a bit rude and left me feeling humiliated. She could have just answered me rather than make me feel silly. She let you down Hanson at the Chelsea. We spent quite a bit of money too but won’t return after that.

What a find! This is just off wind street, but yet feels a million miles away with how calm and boutique the venue feels. The tasting menu was excellent. It felt like a real treat but not pretentious. It is small inside, but well laid out. There is a good range of wine and other drinks on offer. We will definitely visit again.

Went here for my dads birthday and it was genuinely some of the best food I’ve ever had. We were recommended it by a friend. Lovely traditional looking place, great service, amazing food. Definitely coming back.

Hansons just gets better, faultless. Great wine and amazing food. The scallops with haggis are fantastic. I run out of superlatives. I am dairy and wheat free, this is never an issue. Great restaurant, staff are great. Amazing value for the quality, i just wish it was closer, we live in Nottingham.

Amazing starter. Overcooked pork as a main. Service was under average, and considering it was a half full restaurant, they were unintentive. Never once coming over to top-up glasses. I will give it another go as my partner has been twice before and said the service and food were better the previous 2 times. I will update my review after my next visit.

Magnificent meal in an intimate and relaxed restaurant. We had the 7 course tasting menu which was absolutely divine. Wonderful food and tremendous value for money. Would heartily recommend.

The restaurant is fantastic. Everything on the menu is spectacular! Love the Gin & Tonic. The owner Andrew is a great cook, his attention to detail is spectacular. I use to go to restaurant a lot, but now am rarely in Swansea, hasn’t been possible. Molly was an excellent waitress and the rest of his staff.

Wow, where do I start... The 3 of us were treated like royalty from the moment we walked through the door. The young front of house staff were truly magnificent throughout the evening. The food we had was absolutely amazing, for starters I had the Venison Ragu, my son had the Crab and my partner had the Salmon, for mains I had the Lamb and my partner and son had the Beef. We all even had Deserts as we didn't want to leave the restaurant. The whole experience will stay with us for a very long time and the next time we are visiting my son in Swansea we shall definitely be booking a table.

For starters we had the venison and camembert bon bons (newly added to menu) which were perfect. For mains we had the duck and monk fish dishes which were very good. The side of chips was nice too. Enough food on plates. Really great service from Kelly who made us laugh and checked in on us. The table was a little wobbly, loose feet which fe fixed.

Excellent experience. Front of house staff were very efficient and helpful. The food was really great. I have recommended Hanson to a number of our friends. We have eaten at the restaurant a number of times and we have never been disappointed.

Went there Saturday had a smashing time

Visited for lunch with friends. The lunch set menu has plenty of choice - starter and main, or main and dessert. Our party had a mix of starters and desserts. The starter was pate and looked beautiful, served with bread and chutney. Mains included hake Kiev and chicken with pasta. The hake was served with chips. All were delicious. Desserts were lemon tart and baked cheesecake. Again plates were scraped clean. If you want delicious food that’s slightly different then this is the place to visit.

Out for a Saturday evening meal with the family, we had 2 cod loin, a pork belly and a duck plus various sundries. As always, every time we've been here the food is top notch 5 star all the way. For some reason tonight, although there were 3 front of house staff. ,the young boy - Ben - seemed to be covering every table on his own while the two young girls had decided to enter the European fork polishing, customer avoidance championships. I get that cutlery is important but 3 couples in front of us tried in vain for 20 minutes or more to attract the attention of the serving staff so that they could pay and leave. Eye contact didn't work, raised fingers didn't work, all three tables had to go to the staff to make their intentions clear. This might sound snobbish but I'm sorry, people have lives and things to do and it seemed to frustrate everyone that left before us that as customers they were being ignored. The night should be about magnificent food, and great conversation, not 'let's play hunt the staff who only want to hide behind the fridge or polish cutlery whilst there were 6 tables of customers, 4 of which wanted to continue their evenings but were thwarted by the inaction of others. Sorry for my rant but it was particularly irksome tonight when we wanted to show our 18 year old daughter great food and service before she goes to uni and eats beans on toast for three years.. I hope the young serving girls really enjoyed their chat whilst Ben did the work of all three of them. 5 star food, 1 maybe 2 star service. We will be back as the food is amazing but would be reticent to take friends with us at this point

Exceptional. Always excellent but tonight exceptional. Starters scallops with haggis bon bons . I am gf but all done specially and delicious. Main course fillet steak which was amazing. Ordered on recommendation on the waiting staff who were busy and brilliant. Faultless and really enjoyed. I'm df gf and the food quality and service made it probably the best meal e ver. Exceptional value too.

OK here we go. I consider myself a bit of a foodie as my reviews will probably show but OMG this place has blown us away. Two couples three courses with drinks just shy of £200 and yes worth every penny so we can't recommend this place enough and we will be back.

This is our go to restaurant when visiting Swansea, so were looking forward to our lunch at Hanson at the Chelsea. We viewed the online menu prior to our visit and knew what we were going to order. On arrival at the restaurant, we stood at the bar area for a good 10 mins before a member of staff appeared. not a good start. We were then seated at our table and given the menu, which didn't have the same options as the online menu. The waiter suggested a choice of breads to start while we were looking at the menu, which we agreed to. This arrived as a warmed bread roll, cut into 4 quarters at a charge of £3.00!. My husband eventually chose the goats cheese bruschetta as his alternative starter as he liked the fact that it had rocket as part of the ingredients. However, when the starter arrived, there was no rocket. When queried with the waiter, he said that they had run out (only 2 other tables eating). If this was made clear when ordering he would have ordered something else. For the main, we both chose the duck, which we have had in the past and really enjoyed. When our main arrived, we couldn't believe the presentation of our meal - again it was not as described on the menu, no carrot fondant or root puree - these were replaced with mushroom puree, a slice of battered courgette (greasy) and one broccoli stem that was so hard, we couldn't cut it. The Duck itself has been deep fried to the extend that it was so overcooked that it was not succulent but really hard and crispy, and not to the standard that we have ever had before. The menu in the restaurant also noted a £1.50 supplement for the duck. We complained to the waiter who apologised. We also noticed that the set lunch menu has increased in price since our last visit, and a number of dishes incurred an additional charge. Whilst we understand that ingredients have increased in price, which means that customers have to pay more, we would still expect the same quality. When the waiter brought the bill, there was no money taken off for the mains even though he clearly knew we were unhappy with the quality of the food. When we challenged the waiter, he said, that he had meant to remove the £1.50 supplement for each of the duck main meals. All in all, it was a very disappointing visit, where we thought the food was overpriced, poorly cooked and presented and was not as described, so for this reason, we will not be returning.

Never having been to Swansea before if Hanson at the Chelsea is in any way representative then it has an impressive food scene. Lauded by the likes of the Good Food Guide as well as the Michelin l’homme pneumatique. awarded an AA rosette it advertises itself as a speciality seafood restaurant. Certainly the scallop prawn and salmon roulade made its mark whilst the mother and daughter at the table adjoining mine fairly ticked into their main courses of sole in a sea of mussels and shrimps which they supplemented with a sharing bowl of new potatoes. Half of the quarter of ladies ahead of me chose beaded hake and chips as their main. But there is much more besides with steak frites and pork shoulder tempting me almost as much as the duck confit I in fact chose featuring a carrot fondante, a pot of perfectly creamy dauphinoise potato not to mention a thick creme de cassis sauce. A whisky infused bead and butter brioche fairly swimming in an indulgent custard rounded off a truly memorable lunch.

My husband and I love this restaurant. We went there yesterday, 23rd June for our anniversary. The staff are so friendly and accommodating, Sophie so knowledgeable, an amazing person, Andrew the best chef ever, Nathan well, very inspirational with his soup recipes. Thank you to you all.

Really lovely place the food was excellent full of flavors and just the right amount. Definitely a hidden gem of Swansea. I would highly recommend here if your looking for a fancy dining experience with a laid back atmosphere

I was really disappointed with the whole experience. I paid £18.99 for the smallest potion of chips available at least around 4, and a crochet of fish that whilst it tasted lovely would not be enough food to feed a small child. I had a starter as well and was still starving buy the end of a meal that cost me in total with one glass of wine £33. Ridiculous. Now I'm all for fine dining don't get me wrong, but not when I leave a place more hungry than when I came in. Would not return. Only giving two stars because the food tasted nice. The food tasting good was the only good thing about this place, can not at all fault the chef. Your food was delicious, would just have liked to have seen more of it on there. (I know that's the style of the cuisine your going for, but to me a meal should be more than something that just looks pretty, it should fill you as well) I also felt very rushes and pushed to order, and the staff apart from the female waitress who was nice were quite cold. I know our friends were late, but these things sometimes do happen, you could have been nicer about how you communicated to us you needed us to order. Also my friend asked about one of the dishes she order having dairy as she's lactose intolerant, you informed her there was no dairy on her dish and when it was brought out there was dairy. Tip - Let your staff try your whole menu, when your staff have tried the whole menu they can be better at giving your guests recommendations. Because they will know more about the portions sizes, content of the dish, and the best way to sell the food to your customers. You wouldn't sell a car without letting someone have a test drive. Let them experience the whole menu so they have a grater insight into how to make recommendations. * I felt judged in that establishment by the guests, as well and overall it was prob the worst meal out I have ever had in my entire life, just because of the environment, portion size, and over all snooty atmosphere. I have been to fine dining places and still had a meal that looked lovely but also filled me, and could name a long list of those places in and around Swansea. This review is not to be mean but to just display how I honestly felt. Overall: Good quality tasting food, portion sizes could be bigger, staff and guests/atmosphere felt off and snooty. Didn't feel welcomed. Would not come back.

Food and service first class as always

Came here for an occasion dinner with my partner and was rather disappointed. First off, the name was wrong on our booking which caused minor confusion but was seated promptly regardless. The atmosphere is very cramped and uncomfortably tight, my partner was asked to move his chair multiple times and was bumped on the back when people (including staff) passed by. It took 25 minutes for us to find out if I could even eat there due to being vegetarian and there not being any vegetarian main options listed on the menu. No one came over to check on us so couldn't even ask, although when we did enquire we were told there was 1 option for me which I gladly ordered. Food came fast which we were pleased about however the standard was unfortunately not as expected due to the price point charged. Chicken was burnt, risotto was lukewarm at best and the scallops had ligaments remaining which was unpleasant. The soup and vegetarian linguine was okay, but again not what was expected due to the price. The wait staff were lovely but I feel more than 2 staff was needed out front on a full Friday night, this would have solved our wait time issue. We didn't want to say anything about the meals due to the 2 ladies next to us expressing that they were enjoying their taster menu so didn't want to dampen their evening. We are glad they enjoyed the taster menu, however we cannot say we will be back to sample it.

Lovely little restaurant in the city centre, very unassuming from the outside but cosy and welcoming. Lovely waitress who single-handedly managed the twenty covers with ease. A big pity about the food though. My starter of smoked haddock scotch egg sounded promising but didn’t deliver, soggy mashed haddock coating the egg and served room temperature, nice smooth aioli and scattering of micro herbs didn’t redeem the dish. Main of Hake Kiev served with a garlicky crouton with a very small concasse of tomato and chips. The fish was dry and the promised walnut, Parmesan and garlic butter filling pretty non existent. My friends’ steak looked great, puddings all very pretty albeit rather small!

So good we're going back tonight!

For valentine's I decided to book the Hanson as a treat. The menu was a 4 course tatser menu for £45 per person. Upon booked I was advised that we would be downstairs but this didn't change the ambience. It was nice and quaint. Almost 10 minutes after being seated we were asked what drinks we would like even though there was no menu to select from. The time between service of food seemed quite long. With the menu being a taster menu and portions smaller it seemed like a lifetime. Starter was a scollop linguine with panchetta and parmesan but the panchetta was nowhere to be seen, just mushrooms. The liver and foir gras parfait middle course was nice put way too much parfait compared to the amount of bread that was served. The main course was ok, felt like it lacked flavour slightly. The dessert was nice however missing the Bailey's ice-cream as stated in the menu. When asked the waiter explained that they had a busy service ahead. I felt this was quite strange as we were in for 6pm. Some changes on the menu but not telling customers????? Not good enough really. We left disappointed and hungry. A bowl of chocolate shreddies was needed afterwards 🤦‍♂️ This is the second time we've visited the Hanson. Unfortunately the first time was great for us either but I believe in giving second chances, however we won't be returning again.

Amazing food, glad we found this little gem for our family lunch. The food were excellent, everything from Starter to desert were cooked to perfection. We all had something different: Starters: scallops, fish cake, soup Main course: steak, lamb shank, hake, mixed seafood and the chef’s went out of his way to cook carbonara with king prawns for our fussy daughter (amazing)! Desert: crème brûlée, jam pudding, bread & butter pudding, lemon tart All highly recommended. The wine was very reasonable too. The staffs were very attentive and friendly. We’ll definitely come back when we visit Swansea again. Reservation for weekend is a must as they can accommodate 40 covers for lunch or dinner at a time. The lemon tart didn’t stay on the plate long enough for my husband to take a photo!

A lovely place to eat. The staff are friendly and polite.

We ordered smoke salmon and pumpkin soup for starters; salmon and hale fillet for main courses. The smoke salmon is great. Pumpkin soup is a bit too salty, the saltiness override the original flavour. Hale fillet is good, no compliant it tastes as expected. The salmon main course, is disappointing. There are rice underneath the salmon, its under cook. Its pretty hard. Customer service is average. I don't think will go for lunch again.

Went to the Chelsea Cafe in a party of 7 for a friends birthday. Had the basement room to ourselves which was like private dining! As usual, the food was pretty good although my rack of lamb was overcooked (cardinal sin). The mini shepherds pie though was imaginative and delicious. Wine was very good, especially the Uruguayan red. Will book again but next time will probably try the tasting menu.

Fantastic meal, high dining whilst being hearty and full of flavour. Generous portion sizes, left comfortably full. Presentation of food was. great and a varied wine list. Service was great, rarely see people as attentive and friendly as the young man who served us today. No delays, food came out in great timings between courses. Overall, really lovely place to dine would highly recommend

Took my wife for lunch due to the positive reviews. Left feeling disappointed. Lack of seasoning on the meals which is the first thing you learn in cookery school. Onion rings and chips were very oily and I couldn’t taste anything but oil, the steak was more like road kill rather than a sirloin, thin and full of sinuous, the butter sauce was bland and tasteless, I’m no food critic but when your paying good money you expect good food, I could have filled my fridge for £55 and cooked better food myself. The pate was just full of booze and I couldn’t taste anything else, wouldn’t go back in a hurry. Only upside was the waitress

Wonderful, cosy and delicious! We went for dinner last night, the service was great considering how busy it was. Food was delicious and beautifully presented, I had the Salmon Gravard Lax starter, Lemon sole main and Chocolate Crémeux dessert. My fiancé had the Scallop starter, Duck Confit main and the same dessert. I thoroughly recommend coming here if you're a lover of seafood, they also have meat and vegetarian options and can accommodate if you let them know ahead of time.

Lunch time visit midweek. Lunch menu not changed much since our last visit. Each course we received was presented very nicely and tasted delicious. Swift efficient service from the waitress who has worked there for some time. Sadly she is leaving soon for pastures new....

Visited after a recommendation from a family member for our 30th wedding anniversary meal. What a little gem of a restaurant, food and service amazing. Restaurant is tucked away off the main street, you would struggle to even know it was there. On arrival we were greated enthusiastically by Sophie our waitress for the evening who looked after us really well. Sophie explained the menu in detail and had great knowledge of the ingredients and dishes on offer. The evening was rounded off with a really nice touch as my wife's dessert was decorated with happy anniversary written in chocolate on the plate. Well done Hanson at the Chelsea we will definitely recommend to friends and be visiting again.

I just had the scallop starter and a glass of wine. The service was excellent and the food delicious. Every item on the plate was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Nowhere else in Swansea serves food of this quality, I shall definitely go back.

We ate here last night as a table of 4. Having a main course and desert, my husband left the restaurant hungary. He had 5 chips on his plate. No garnish on plate, steak was tiny. I felt quite embarrassed as we had been recommended this restaurant and our friends came from burry port to see us. Tiny meals, VERY expensive and very over rated. We will not be going there again. Staff were lovely though.
