If you are looking to stay at a hotel that has charm and character coupled with friendly staff and owners then look no further. We have just returned from two nights and it has left a lasting memory, it's not often you get a hug and a goodbye from the owners when checking out! Chris, Nikki and Harriott make this place very special and have created a truly amazing environment where staff and owners work in partnership together it is wonderful to be a part of this experience. The wine list was fantastic and very refreshing to see good bottles of wine with a marginal mark up unlike some other hotel chains. If you want to get away from the soulless chain hotels and experience something a little different then look no further

Despite being one of the wettest weekends in wales. We stumbled across this lovely family run hotel. We had dinner in the library bar next to the log fire. We had a delicious little red wine and fine food. We ended up chatting to other guests and the owners, which made the evening a memorable night. We stayed in room 8, which was outstanding. Great views overlooking the grounds. The best thing is the bed,my wife and I had the best night sleep ever. When we dragged ourselves out of bed for breakfast this was also outstanding. I fully recommend this little bit of paradise.

I have been waiting for 20 years for Castle Malgwyn (not 'ammet 'ouse, please) to realise its potential. We have endured many ups and downs. At last, we had a dinner which delivered in the way this place deserves. The abiding memory is precision; portions, flavours and presentation. It is not cheap, but that is what special occasions are about. The consistency of the delivery made the difference, you pay for what you get. Bravo.

Just occasionally, one stumbles across a venue that routinely exceeds expectations in all respects in terms of food, drink, attitude, service and hospitality. Hammet House in Llechryd, Pembrokeshire, is one such outstanding establishment. We arrived on time on a Friday night and sat in the bar with a drink - my wife had a difficult choice as there were just so many flavours of gin to choose from. We were provided with menus and an extensive wine list to make our selections from. The menu is regularly changed, so even returning customers like ourselves are treated to something different on every visit. We both decided to try the duck for starters and while my wife had the fish for her main, I went for the steak and chip. After our orders were taken, we were shown into the dining room and invited to select a table. Breads were first up, along with our selected bottle of wine, shortly followed by our starters. The food was simply divine. Presentation, taste and textures were all superb. We finished our starters and waited for the main course, whilst enjoying some of the well chilled wine. What a treat that was. I really do think that the wine list here is one of the best I have ever seen in terms of range and depth. Mains arrived, and once again we were very impressed with the beautiful presentation, the taste combinations, and the quality of the food. Quite remarkable and absolutely 100 / 100 to the Chef. Thank you - superb effort, thoroughly appreciated. After our mains were enjoyed, we both elected to have a dessert to finish the evening off, and were delighted to be surprised with two glasses of champagne and an additional chocolate and raspberry cake offering from the house as it was a birthday celebration. What a nice touch. Thank you. I've said this before, but I will repeat it for the benefit of new readers of my reviews - if you are in Pembrokeshire and you wish to enjoy some excellent fine dining at its best, Hammet House is the place to visit (located at one end of the bridge in Llechryd). All in all, a wonderful and relaxed evening with some excellent food and drink. We look forward to the next one.

Food full of flavour, good portion size, excellent wines, friendly & efficient staff, a beautiful period building tastefully decorated with a light, modern elegance, interesting artwork and sculptures, very different from those normally seen in a restaurant. There are crisp linen tablecloths & elegant silverware for the tables, gentle low background music, not stuffy & mournful, we enjoyed listening to Leonard Cohen. We have dined in many fabulous hotels & restaurants including the ‘Hand Picked’ and ‘Macdonalds’ groups. When we see ‘Fine dining’ we have come to expect very small portions but not so at Hammet House. I meant to order vegetables with my fillet steak meal but was glad I forgot – there was plenty of food & variety on the plate, just right. Dessert did not disappoint either – attractive, light, full of flavour & textures. A very talented chef! The ‘plastic’ chairs in the dining room are not plastic, they are expensive Designer pieces in clear polycarbonate (we checked them out with a view to buying some!) and give an attractive light, modern look & wonderful airy feel to the dining room. Also – if a designer ‘plastic’ chair is good enough for the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire at the fabulous Chatsworth House in Derbyshire (we know as we are regulars there), then they are fine in any top restaurant! Our bill for 2 fillet steak dinners with 2 desserts & wine was just under £100 which we feel was very good value. Lower cost options were available and we could have chosen alternatives for around £40 per couple for a 2 course each (plus wine if you want it) - MUCH better value than many run of the mill pub restaurants. The new owners are bringing fine dining into the 21st century and are doing a great job, I just wish we lived nearer as it would be our preferred dining venue. We will definitely be back when visiting Wales again soon. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Stayed here for 2 nights to visit family nearby. We asked for the exceptional room ( £200+ per night) as we wanted to guarantee comfort and good sleep. The staff we dealt with were charming and helpful and seemed to be doing their best in a clearly understaffed hotel. Breakfast was average, the table we sat at had a window shelf that was dusty and had several dead flies on it. The bed was good , the badly stained mattress not so good. The bathroom was shabby, certainly not exceptional. The bathroom products are no longer top-end Aromatherapy Associates. When we returned to the hotel at midnight on the Saturday a man ( the owner ?) was playing very loud music in a communal room which seemed to be below the room in which we intended to sleep. The music was not turned down until we called and asked for it to be quieter so that we could try and sleep. The next morning no apology was made and we left with the impression that the proprietors didn’t care whether we enjoyed our stay or not. This could be a wonderful hotel as it’s an impressive house with lovely grounds. We enjoyed the art on the walls but would definitely not stay here again.

We ate here on a Friday night as non-residents. What a find. Staff all friendly and attentive, without being in your face. Left to pour your own wine at your own pace. A great wine list to suit all tastes and budgets. The food was the main event though. Beautifully balanced and cooked perfectly. Everything on the plate complemented each other (unlike other restaurants we have eaten where the chef's try and be too clever and it doesn't work). I can honestly say the food was as good, if not better than what we have had at a Michelin star restaurant. The food is well worth its double rosette AA award and should be knocking on the door for three rosettes. Portions are adequate but don't come here if you want a big hearty meal. Reasonably priced at £49 for three courses considering the quality. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

This was our second visit to Castell Malgwyn (as we know it), the first being some 15 years ago. In that time there have been two changes of ownership, the first being very unpopular with locals as they changed the name from Castell Malgwyn to Hammet House (presumably because their target clientèle found it easier to pronounce). They also destroyed the internal ambience of this fine Georgian mansion by modernising it. The new owners have thankfully partially restored the historic name (it is now called “Hammet at Castell Malgwyn” – presumably for the sake of continuity with booking agents), but the interior remains a rather incongruous mixture of ancient and modern. Let’s start with the positives. The food was excellent – well-cooked and well-presented and with some exquisite combinations of flavour. The service (despite what some other reviewers have reported) could also not be faulted. (I should add, however, that the restaurant was not very busy – only two other tables were occupied.) There is, however, a very limited choice – just four alternatives for each of the three courses (and three of the four starters contained seafood!). It was not a problem for us to make a choice of two courses (though none of the desserts tempted us), but if you are staying in the hotel you would be struggling after a day or two (we understand the menu only undergoes minor changes, or none, from day to day). We both chose the same starter – pork belly with langoustine. For main course, I chose the halibut and my wife the chicken. (The other options were fillet of beef and a vegetable risotto.) As I have already said, the food was excellent. Portion sizes, however, were on the small side (no problem for us in our mid-seventies, but an active 25-year-old might still be hungry at the end of the meal!). Less positive was the atmosphere (or lack of it) in the dining room. The background music we found to be totally inappropriate (too modern and too loud) as an accompaniment to fine dining – something more classical, perhaps even baroque, would be better. And we were not very impressed with the plastic dining chairs, especially next to a seventeenth-century sideboard! Restoration to a real Georgian feel would be a big improvement. Finally, we think the food is over-priced for this area. Two courses for two people, with a glass of wine and coffee, came to over £100 - about 25% more than we pay in local restaurants of a similar standard. To summarize, we would give five stars for the Food and the Service, three stars for the Atmosphere, and only two, I’m afraid, for Value for Money.

Hammet House is the perfect place for that 'special occasion'. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds, at the end of a long, tree-lined drive. it is country house, which retains much of former Georgian charm and ambience. Although it is a an upmarket dining experience, the atmosphere is friendly, unhurried and relaxed. The food is excellent and served beautifully. In addition to the wonderful food and tasteful decor, the added appeal of Hammet House is the range of gorgeous paintings that line the walls and staircase. Visited HH last night with guests from the US and London and was so disappointed and embarrassed by the end of the night, what a painful experience. On arrival, one of my guests was keen on a glass of champagne, having already resolved this ask on a previous visit with the owner who had put the option of a glass of champagne back on the menu, the young lady went away only to return and inform us that this was not permitted. So my party decided to push the boat out and go for a bottle of Tattinger instead, so the young lady goes off only to return and inform us that 'we have not organised our stock and there is no Tattinger available', so 2nd disappointment. For some of us driving we asked to see the soft drinks menu only to be told, this is being renewed and not available......apparently the hotel was so busy that we could only choose from 1 menu as opposed to being able to peruse the house and the bar menu and make choices across both, that rationale would have been OK, but the hotel never really felt overwhelming busy and had mostly couples and what looked like chaps on business staying in ones or twos, we were the largest party on the night of 5 and the restaurant was not full for the whole time we were there. Staff on the night who I have highly praised in the past were flustered, disorganised, did not appear to be 'managed' and did not appear to be in control, and as our asks got more awkward this became more evident. Had to chase for water for the table, bread and to request the wine menu. One of my guests has very sever food allergies -in particular vinegar and we expressed this emphatically when working through the menu whilst making our choices - the starter of organic tomato's which we were reassured had absolutely no vinegar in it at all did then arrive with silver skinned pickled onions, which had clearly been pickled in vinegar, my guest literally had to expel this from her mouth so as to avoid a reaction.....the menu asks for guest to make allergies known and we could not have emphasised this enough so I was mortified that this occurred to my more senior guest. We had another issue with the pudding where are questions to the young lady resulted in nothing like the Meringue as described on the menu - no mention of a large slab of lemon curd with only a few whispers of Meringue, again not being able to eat the lemon curd the pudding was returned. As a local resident I want to bring my international colleagues, friends and family to such a splendid place for a great dining experience, but this night was truly a disappointment and eating out all week and telling my colleagues that this would be the highlight of it, my expectations and theirs were very much unmet.

We live locally to Hammet House but it's taken us a while to get round to visiting for dinner. We should have gone sooner as the meal was excellent. We had 2 courses, and despite initially thinking that the main course portion sizes were too small it was quite enough given the canapés and amuse bouche we had too.I've given a rating of 4 out of 5 just because of some really simple things that somewhere with such high aspirations should be getting right. For example, asking which gin you'd like when ordering a G&T, or explaining upfront that only light tonic was chilled, or remembering that you ordered lime in your first G&T but serving lemon in the second without asking again. Maybe these things are picky but these are the things that great hotels & restaurants nail. That said, in no way at all will it deter us from returning soon.

This review is a little late but the memory of the most incredible meal lives on. The hotel itself is old, quirky and imposing. The decor is an interesting mix of modern art vs original features.  We had a large room with black furniture looking onto the grounds, with a huge comfortable bed. The plumbing is old so the shower took its time but eventually got things right. The grounds are lovely and there is a lovely river walk next to the hotel which was a little too muddy for us at the time,  sadly. But you don't come here for the room. It's the food that will bring you back. We stayed one night and had the three course meal for £49 per person. We were disappointed to find we were the only people staying there on a Wednesday in January, so chose not to eat in the dining room but by the fire instead. The awkward feeling of being alone soon went away when we realised that we had the head chef Matt Smith all to ourselves. Despite there being two of us, the stops were completely pulled out on our behalf and he brought out most of the dishes and explained them himself. We felt very special! For me to attempt to describe the food would not do it justice, as it was so artfully presented and delicious and by basic description would never convey the quality or the artistry that went into every dish.We had amuse bouches to start on a slate, including chicken balls, a cheesy chip and more. Then if I remember rightly, we had a savoury donut with liver parfait which was surprisingly gorgeous. Then we had a mini croque monsieur served on a wooden board. This was all even before the starters, so I don't know who out there is writing that these portions are small.Yes they look small, but the food is so rich and fabulous we could barely walk to our room afterwards. The food continued to impress with amazing starters followed by delicious mains. I had the fish served with a chicken wing, my partner had the most wonderful prawns. We then had an incredible pre - dessert of a 'pebble' formed with sorbet covered in liquid nitrogen on a bed of delicious mousse which was unforgettable. My partner then had a showstopping dessert served with a bowl of lemons in liquid nitrogen. After eating all of these wonderful things washed down with a fine wine, we shuffled to bed very full and happy indeed. We will definitely return.

Our first experience of the December evening menu. It was a stunning display of Matt Smith's expertise and led us into new awareness of what is possible with skill and imagination. Every dish, including the bread rolls, was a delightful kaleidoscope of taste and texture using previously unknown (to us) combinations of ingredients and cooking methods which married and contrasted with each other in a very gratifying way. The whole meal, from the welcoming canapes through amuse bouches, main course and pudding was a delightful process of discovery of new constituents, tastes and pleasures. We now know and look forward to having more beetroot spaghetti, cooked pears as a vegetable, blackcurrant pebbles, and so many other novel ingredients. The meal left us completely satisfied and I wish I could give it six stars, but five will have to do. Matt and Hammet House deserve greater recognition for the wonderful food they provide. Needless to say, the friendly staff also deserve appreciation.

A fairly well kept secret (as in they don't advertise the fact) is that there is fishing available in the River Teifi that runs along one side of the hotel. There is some sort of agreement that means guests can fish a 300 yrd section down from the bridge, provided they have a valid EA licence. The river is right at the top of the tidal section, so even with low summer levels you can get caught out if the tide comes in. I only managed to catch a little Salmon parr although I did see a big Sewin (sea trout) cruise right past my fly. Locals fish at night for Sewin. I managed until just after dusk when it got too spooky. There is a local expert, Harry, available as a guide if required. Probably a good idea if you actually want to catch something.

I've eaten here a couple of times before. We came in as a family of four, the welcome was warm and friendly, I asked for a bottle of wine that they used to have on the menu and the young waitress managed to get hold of a bottle of it for me-fab start. The food was amazing, full of flavour, my hot smoked salmon main was probably the best salmon dish I've ever had and the dessert was immense. Well done Hammet House, all of us loved our food, we'll be back again very soon!

Just come back from a special dinner to celebrate life and friendship. The food was amazing, each course an adventure for your taste buds. The complementary appetisers, amuse bouche, and palate cleansers on the a la carte dinner menu were a complete surprise, enticing and an added experience that really should not be missed. The decor was a fantastic blend of old and new, with modern art, sculptures and furnishings sat alongside dark leather sofa's and historic features. Staff were lovely, pleasant, friendly and at no point did we feel hurried or that anything was too much trouble. Would love to return again, and try another seasonal menu. Well done all.

Our family treated us to this stay to celebrate our joint 50th birthdays. The food was fantastic. We ate in the restaurant all three nights of our stay. We were never disappointed and there were even one or two little gimmicks, all adds to the theatre. All of the staff were absolutely excellent. Always smiling and very helpful. We had the afternoon tea whilst we were there. This was lovely, homemade pork pie and sausage rolls included. Breakfast was the usual buffet with hot served. I thoroughly enjoyed the homemade yoghurts. Even the tomato sauce was homemade. You really got the sense that they enjoy what they do and do it well.

Out of this world! The fine dining menu was exquisite. The experience of eating the actual food was exceptional and staff were especially attentive. So we arrive expecting a 'A La Carte' dinner, oh we were so wrong it was a hundred times better! Canapés with arrival drinks, personal service at the bar, surprise additional courses (you'll have to go and find out for yourselves). The entire menu was expediently but the starters and main where, for both myself and my husband, of such high quality. The words Michelin Star, Heston Blumenthal and Masterchef finals have been said a number of time over dinner and since after. The best bit was the liquid nitrogen for dessert (I won't spoil the surprise). If you want to experience fine dining at affordable prices and guarantee you get the best of the best, then you must go there. I want to shout it from the roof tops. GO THERE! THE FOOD IS OUT OF THIS WORLD?

This would be a lovely place to have a celebratory dinner, if you have the cash to splash! My only criticism is that it was so quiet in the dining room on the day that I ate that I felt a bit awkward having a giggle with my partner.I liked that we could sit in the bar area, drink, have appetisers in a bit more of a relaxed environment before we headed in to the restaurant proper for dinner.

My husband and I stayed and dined here for our 15th anniversary. Having stayed and dined in a number of similarly rated establishments in the area we were expecting something special. Check-in: Although we'd prepaid for accommodation, dinner and breakfast with what I thought was a great deal on LivingSocial, we were chased up to our room to request the voucher and a credit card for any extras, this should have been requested at the reception desk, by chasing guests you automatically infer a mistrust!Rooms: The 'cosy' rooms are very small with seemingly little attention to detail, i.e. no plug or light near dressing table, word work not painted in areas which aren't fully on show, very average old white tiled and small bathroom with scruffy mastic hanging. We did look at a couple of the larger rooms which were being cleaned and whilst they were spacious, they still lacked the appearance that you'd expect from reading the website.Bar: Certainly not comfortable seating, if you think you'll relax in a sumptuous sofa or armchair after dinner think again. I agree it's lovely to have a few modern quirky pieces but they should be Cleverley integrated amongst more comfortable furniture. The cocktails were superb, there was an extensive menu of which some, not all, of the staff were knowledgeable.Dinner: Absolutely appalling, can honestly say the second worst meal compared to expectations ever! Cold, dry, tasteless scallops for starters and similarly for the dover sole with a pork crackling dust, except this was void of any moisture whatsoever, the bread was rock hard and was returned to the kitchen twice. All of these issues were pointed out to the embarrassed waitress who confirmed it didn't 'look right'.Management: We weren't asked if everything was alright with our stay on departure but I thought it only fair to bring to the attention of the management, thus giving them the opportunity to appease us. How very wrong I was, when I pointed the shortfalls out to the owner/manager he replied that he had to totally disagree and that he had in fact been in the kitchen the night before when the bread was returned, which apparently broke open the soft rolls with great ease, this could only have been done with a sharp implement and why on earth didn't he come in to the dining room to check if everything was ok the evening before! Once I realised the complete apathy I requested that we be allowed to settle our extra's bill as quickly as possible as we wished to get out of Hammet House as fast as possible! I've read a number of good reviews about Hammet House on here, perhaps we were just VERY UNLUCKY, I've also read some not so shining and personally if you're looking to spend a similar amount of money in a fabulous place not far from Hammet House, I'd recommend The Grove in Narbeth or the Corran Resort in Laughrne, both have fabulously individual accommodation and exceptional restaurants!

We ate at the hotel on 2 nights, the first in the restaurant and the second in the bar. Some of the menu items were available in both.I have never enjoyed a cheeseboard as much as the one that I had here in the restaurant. The concept of being from the 3 local counties was excellent, but the cheese themselves were exceptional. The night that we ate in the restaurant was a little eerie, as we were the only ones there, and we seem to have been left alone for a while, no doubt whilst the same staff dealt with those eating in the bar area..so not the best night for atmosphere. The food was very good throughout, both well presented and of good portion size, and certainly tasty. The chef no doubt will see stars in his eyes one day, particularly given the quality of his little between course items. The second night we dined in the bar where other people around helped with the atmosphere. The food was not there to compete with the restaurant items, but was nevertheless of a high standard.Wines and beers were good and reasonably priced throughout.I would definitely eat here again, in either part, and recommend both to you too.

Popped in for afternoon tea for 2....food was just acceptable but for £18 each I expected far better quality and quantity.Granted there is normally a required 24 hour notice required, so perhaphs this is why it was below par. The bread for the sandwiches was not home made., which I would have expected at this cost, served on a plastic cake stand, not a ceramic one, again attention to detail is lacking. There were also cobwebs on the windows which would indicate a poor housekeeping standards.....and as for plastic chairs..really?I had to use the mens toilets which were smelly, cracked urinals and taps with no tops on...Very disappointing, and better value afternoon tea at the Cenarth tearooms.A return visit is unlikley.

Although the decor in this restored country mansion wasn't quite my cup of tea, the food certainly was. Dining at its very best - not cheap, but worth every penny and a few more. Popped in for a coffee, which I must say was very nice. We sat in the drawing room, which is a beautiful old room but unfortunately it has been ruined with some ultra modern furniture and odd light fittings. We sat on plastic see through seats which were actually comfortable, but just looked totally out of place. In my opinion this hotel would be a real gem if they went for a more classy feel inside. Unassuming Head Chef Andy Beaumont is a hidden diamond and delivered an unexpectedly excellent gastronomic experience which topped everything I can remember eating in the last year. Without detracting form the hotel, it was the fine dining that will stick in our memory for a long time and hopefully we will sample it again soon. The ingredients are of the finest quality and were obviously prepared, cooked and served with great skill and delight. Andy clearly takes great pride in every aspect of the food service. The most stunning aspect was the combination of flavours on the plate that were so complementary. The starters of 'Seared scallops, tartar, pearl barley, roasted peppers, sweet onion, toasted hazel nuts' (me), and 'Foie gras, smoked duck, black truffle, apple' (my good wife), were simply stunning taste-explosion ensembles that we enjoyed with a delicious Bee Blauschiefer Honigberg Riesling (my wife is an apiarist). My main course of 'Venison, sauerkraut, roasted parsnip puree, salted caramel, elderberries' was perfectly cooked and executed, but my wife's 'Welsh fillet steak au poivre, creamed leeks, sweet potato fries, salad' was simply stunning. The meat easily beat the Wagyu fillet at Al Muntaha (Burj al Arab) for both tenderness and taste and was perfectly complemented by the plated accompaniments and a bottle of Malbec. I cannot recommend Andy Beaumont at the Hammet House restaurant highly enough. His superb culinary offering is right up there with the best you might expect from Bray or Mayfair.

My fiance and I moved to west Wales from Chelsea, London last year and have tried to visit as many restaurants and recommended gastropubs in the local area as possible as we love eating out. Although there are some very nice restaurants in the Pembrokeshire area, most notably The Grove in Narberth, our favourite by far is Hammet House. This is because not only is the food superb, creative and beautifully presented but it is the full experience and ambience of the place which we love. We have visited the place a few times, the most recent being for dinner a few days ago and each time we leave very happy. The service is exceptional, often with one of the owners wandering round chatting to guests. The girls who work there are lovely, chatty and helpful. As for the decor, that is the best bit!! I simply cannot understand the negative comments left by other people. The owners have taken what was a tired 'Faulty Towers' and breathed new life into it. The feel is modern and fun but without pretension. The whole place has clearly been carefully thought out and is a true labour of love. The vibrant colours and Phillippe Starck 'ghost' chairs are a lovely touch. It is a breath of colourful and creative fresh air from the chintzy and rather dull decor in all the other hotels in the area.

We went for Sunday lunch. There was Pork loin or Beef to choose from. We chose pork and it was lovely. There were 7 side vegetables, all beautifully cooked also Apple sauce and gravy. For desert there was a large choice. I chose the home made meringues with summer fruits and whipped cream. The meringues were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. They were beautiful as they were not too sweet and the fruit and cream complemented the meringues very well.
