We stopped here for a drink with friends before lunch at a nearby cosy pub - something this was not!! We had a very unfriendly welcome, no atmosphere what so ever and someone wandering around in what looked like very thin boxer shorts!! The person behind the bar had a heavily bandaged hand which blood had seeped through, just not acceptable! Previous reviews are so right, don’t bother. Having visited The Hambro a few years ago, and had a wonderful warm experience, to be disappointed is an understatement. For such a beautiful village, it needs serious improvement

Really angry as places this bad shouldn't still be running. The service was surly, bordering argumentative. Food was 'P' poor, I mean really horrendously shocking. If your thinking of going i would advise you go to a petrol station instead - you'll get better service. If you're the owners checking out reviews...i think you should take other reviews into consideration and make some alterations.

After having a lovely meal at The Royal Oak up the road we stopped off on the way home to walk around the beautiful quaint village of Milton Abbas and visit the local village pub. We had visited a few years prior with family after a walk around Milton Abbey and had a warm welcome. This time we walked in to a couple of locals in the pub but otherwise quiet and was greeted by an unenthusiastic bar staff, I assume one of the owners who was slow and a bit grumpy throughout serving us. The pub lacked atmosphere or a warm welcome and it became apparent as a few more locals arrived that the nibble bowls they were all tucking into we for locals only as we weren’t offered any. No food is available in the evening, although we had eaten. Would i return? To the village yes, but the pub…? Probably not if the welcome remains the same. Which is such as shame as it’s in a beautiful location and is a lovely thatched pub. Owners need to greet non locals warmer than they do.

This really is the most beautiful pub in the prettiest village. I think it has so much potential to be a fabulous place to visit. We popped along most nights whilst staying in milton abbas for drinks and on the Thursday evening we enjoyed a fabulous curry from the tikka truck, excellent food at a great price, which was really delicious. The only downfall was not to see it bursting at the seams as it is a real gem to visit.

Stopped for a lunchtime drink on a circular walk. Only two others in the bar. Two beers out of four available. The one I chose was Palmers. Barman coughed as he served my drinks. The dead box hedging plants outside summed it all up for me. Sterile, overrated and bland. The village is a second home folly so it's no surprise.

A beautiful pub in a beautiful setting of picture postcard village Milton Abbey . BUT it doesn't serve evening meals and only offers sandwiches at lunch time. It's a shame that this probably once vibrant pub is now no more than a sandwich shop. OK if you want to sit outside and have a drink with the landlord/owner but move on for food

We stopped here for lunch, but all that was available was a light lunch menu. There was no atmosphere in this pub, and the owner seemed not to worry about the customer. The young barman has a lack of enthusiasm, and to be very honest we were glad to leave in the end. The only good thing I found was the beautiful village as you closed the door behind you.

Simply disappointing. Went there last year and it was excellent. Went again this year expecting the same quality. Each lunch was around a tenner and resembled what is served as a £2.50 school dinner. If I'm going to spend that much, I would expect good quality granary bread or rolls. I know costs are increasing but this was just poor service and poor quality.

I really don't like giving a poor review, but this pub sadly is now one to avoid. Here's why. Sunday lunchtime, mid-August, after a visit to a fabulous local potter's workshop, getting a bit late for a pub lunch. Picturesque village, lovely-looking pub, showing AA 4-stars, but no signal so couldn't check online reviews, but trust the AA ratings. What could go wrong? Inside, found that only sandwiches were available, with really high prices (£8 for ham and tomato, £9 for tuna mayo, etc). But surely, showing AA 4 stars these must be fabulous sandwiches, using local artisan bread, ham from local farmer etc. Gulp at price. Pay. Sandwiches arrive (man serving didn't seem to know which table they were for, despite tables being numbered and our giving the table number at ordering). Pappy, mean supermarket bread, wet square slice of poor-quality ham, tasteless supermarket tomato, tuna mayo weird looking and appeared to have been made with something like salad cream (not nice). Chicken wrap also seemed to be made with salad cream. My ham tasted faintly of washing up liquid (at least the chopping board had been washed down, I guess). All four of us agreed that these were the least appetising sandwiches eaten in a long time. Sorry, but even if the owners can't find (as afterwards we read on Tripadvisor) a chef, at these inflated prices surely anyone can make a half decent sandwich using good local ingredients? The only reason I've given this two stars is because of the view. And only two stars is a terrible shame as, in this setting, this should be a classic English pub doing - especially during high tourist season - great business.

Nice location. Oddly empty on a Sunday in August. Reason: no hot food. Had a prawn sandwich which was a mistake. Heavily buttered cheap granary bread, nearly raw prawns, tired salad. I let the manager know, and he didn’t appear happy. Still, it’s better than the Fontmell, which has to be one of the worst pubs in Dorset.

Beautiful pub in a even more beautiful village, and that's about it. We (couple with 2 children) realised after 3 minutes that something is wrong with this place, as virtually all guests around us complained about the food not arriving. So we asked the waitress what food would come the quickest. Answer: The hamburgers. Also, most of the other dishes on the menu wouldn't be available anyway...I see.The hamburgers really came after 40 minutes, and were horrible. At least we had something to eat, different than the couple on the table next to us, which complained politely that their food wasn't coming 90 minutes after ordering. The waitress clearly never served in a restaurant in her life before that day. Completely lost the poor kid. She got simply every order wrong and almost started crying. The gaffer behind the counter couldn't care less. Check out my other reviews about cottages and restaurants in Dorset, which are all positive. Which should serve as a proof that I am not a moaner. But this place is really a disaster. No idea how it could get so many good reviews. Or maybe we were unlucky and just picked the worst day in the restaurant's history.

This pub flatters to deceive. Very pretty and cosy but....we arrived on Sunday evening and although it clearly states that food is served until 7pm we were asked (presumably for the chef's convenience not ours) to order by 6.45pm. Although it is billed as 'vegetarian friendly' there was no vegetarian option, indeed not even a pescatarian one. The roasts (only option) seemed to be the reheated lunch menu and not very appetizing. Our room was cosy but inadequately lit but the worst thing was that the shower didn't give any hot water and kept just stopping altogether. The TV also didn't work. Breakfast was also not good. The poached eggs had been cooked with so much vinegar that the egg could not be tasted- a first for us. Such a pretty location but afraid we would certainly not eat or stay at the pub again.

We arrived after booking this month's previous and was shown to our room. We soon realised that it wasn't the room we booked. We booked a superior room as it was a special occasion. When we alerted the staff of this. We were then told the price we paid was for the room allocated. We then showed them the confirmation of the booking that confirmed the superior room. But they were fully booked so nothing was done. Was told to contact the third party we booked through. This did not really help as it wasn't what we paid for and put a shadow over the celebrations. We were then given a percentage off our meal but it didn't really help matters. So if you do book a superior room please check its what you will be allocated. This was a great disappointment. Also we were then given a simplified menu because the head chef had left. We had already previewed the menu online but then struggled to find something on the revised menu as this was a special occasion it wasn't what we wanted so please check as staff weren't very helpful with these problems which none of which was our fault. The room was tired and not to standards you would expect reflecting on the price.

We visited the area for a couple of days break, firstly we arrived to this pub for a couple of drinks and loved the look of it. We then returned the following day for some lunch it went down hill from there, both myself and my partner decided on the ribeye steak, the pub itself wasn't that busy so we thought the food would be quick out we did have to wait quite a while which would be fine if we were blown away but sadly my steak which was ordered medium/rare came out near enough blue and I had to send it back, my partner ate some of his but felt bad he was eating on his own, at the time his steak looked like it was cooked to his satisfaction medium, but sadly it was cooked well on the outside and once he got to the middle his steak was rare/blue in the middle,so when the waiter came out wihlth my steak the waiter was so nice and said that the chef apologised and that he had got confused, I then said that unfortunately my partner would not want any of his steak and that he had been put off eating it. I on the other hand had a perfect steak after all the faff. But it meant that I ate on my own and that my partner was starving. This went on with the barman watching and hearing everything and sadly when it came to the bill he continued to try and charge us for both steaks and was not apologetic for the whole fiasco. Sadly the waiter dealt with it amazingly well a young lad andv the barman put us in a fowl mood that he was annoyed of taking the food off the bill. And no apology from himself for our experience. We come to Dorset alot as my partners parents live there but I can say I would def drive to another pub to eat next time.

The good news is that the waiter understood this without us actually having said anything, and had talked to the landlord who came over, apologised and offered to comp drinks or pudding. We opted for pudding (super lovely chocolate fondants) and finished happy!! Things do go wrong sometimes and the important thing is how they are sorted out - in this case really well and consequently we will certainly go again (earlier and book!). Thank you!

We called in for lunch whilst in the area. Lovely table in the bar area, by the window with a super view of the village. We ordered fish pie, steak sandwich & local ham, egg & chips- all very tasty, with generous portions. Lots of locals in the bar, friendly atmosphere & attentive staff. We shall return in the evening & try the more formal dining room.

Sadly I don't have a great review. It was almost like I was an after thought, when taken to my room it was cold as the heating had not been turned on, the owner immediately turned it on and it did heat up quickly. I had booked a stay to take my godson out from his school in the village for his 18th Birthday and had put this in my booking when booking the table. The restaurants hours said 12 until 7pm, when I arrived at 4pm people were eating what looked like a very delicious roast. I confirmed my dinner booking for 6.30 and actually arrived at 6pm to be told that all roasts were finished! They bought another menu and pointed to a few things we could have. We both opted for the burger which was very tasty but not what I was really expecting for a Sunday 18th birthday meal.

This use to be a lovely village pub however upon our recent visit we received unfair treatment. Keith (the landlord) was extremely drunk and all over the bar, being rude to customers and staff.. just unacceptable. Will never return.

We had dinner and drinks in here while we were on our weekend away, such a lovely local pub with Christmas decorations and fireplace going. Very cozy and nice place to be, we were welcomed with open arms :)

Not as posh as I remembered it, we had a decent lunch at the Hambro Arms. We chose the bar area rather than the restaurant part (always better in my opinion), and took the spinach and feta pie, and the fish and chips. Good food, served by friendly people at slightly expensive prices.

We ate here 3 evenings on the run as we had taken a cottage in the village and I didn't feel like cooking!

This pub had a more up market clientele, to go with the residents in this highly sought after thatched village, and to service the tourists visiting it. The restaurant was recommended to us by people living nearby. The service was friendly and efficient and could not be faulted. We had the beef curry which was gluten free. There was plenty of meat in the curry, which was quite mild in taste. It came with poppadoms which were cold and a small pot of mango chutney (could have been more generous.) The deserts were average, with very few gluten free options. The Dorset Apple cake was tasty with custard. The red wine was smooth and of a good quality.

Visited with wife, daughter and mother in law for Sunday lunch last week. We were looked after very well and enjoyed a lovely roast with all the trimmings, along with a very good pint. Ali and her girls were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The kitchen staff clearly take pride in their work and we were so pleased that we promptly booked a table for Christmas Day!

Went to Milton Abbas to admire this pretty village. Called in at the Hambro Arms for lunch and my wife and me had an excellent meal for just over £30. The guys who run it were pleasant and helpful.

Had a meal at hambro arms and they over charged by over £15 . went back next day and they admitted their fault. I wonder how often this happens, so check your bill. Good food and decent enough service. From a local resident.

We waited over an hour on for fish and chips. This is not a criticism; the food was delicious. The kitchen didn't get the message, for some reason. We live locally, so will definitely go again. Fab ambience, it's still a "local" for the locals and a lovely restaurant with ceiling lights, like Christmas, but not so tacky! The staff are charming, the landlord seems to be hands-off, but present and everything's great.

Squeezed us in, although extremely busy. We all had the special of fish pie which was so full of fish and topped with the tastiest cheese. Served with salad which is fine for summer but would enjoy steamed veg with this dish in winter. Staff, Aly and Sam were delightful.

We had a night staying in Milton Abbas - what a picturesque village. Main Street is wide and houses interesting. Walk to Abbey was about 15 minutes and school is very impressive too. See photo

Took a while to find the staff when we first arrived but we were quickly attended to when we did find them. There's a good selection of food on the menu and we were both impressed with the quality and size of the food when it arrived, which it did in reasonable time. The table service was good and we can't complain. The prices were about what you'd expect for a gastro pub.

It is so difficult these days to find pubs that are open at the beginning of the week and which have a decent menu and the White Lion has both! This was one of the best meals we have had in the area and the place was really busy, even on a Tuesday lunchtime. The menu had a good selection and we had the salmon and the home made steak and red pie which were both really nice, followed by an orange and marmalade pudding with Drambuie custard. Very reasonable prices too. The pub itself is very old and quirky with low ceilings and a beautiful beer garden and is dog friendly. We’ll definitely be back and look forward too to enjoying the garden in the better weather!

Excellent traditional pub with tasty and well priced food. The staff were friendly and welcoming throughout, especially with the two children in our group. Would highly recommend the steak and ale pudding! Will defiantly be back if we are staying in the area again.
