Very nice food, tasty, and the place is quite busy. I had the brisket taco and the pork quesadilla. The brisket taco was amazing, but the quesadilla was a bit burnt and didn’t taste that great. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place if you’re in Brighton—good food overall!

Overpriced food, disappointingly small portions, frustratingly weak drinks, all at a premium price that will leave you disappointed. The taste of the food is good enough...but the experience as a whole falls well short of expectations—justification enough to save your money. ▬▬▬ BREAKDOWN ▬▬▬ ⭐⭐⭐⭐➖ | FOOD ⭐⭐➖➖➖ | DRINKS ⭐⭐⭐➖➖ | ATMOSPHERE ⭐⭐⭐⭐➖ | SERVICE ⭐➖➖➖➖ | PRICE ► FOOD: The taste of the food isn’t, by any means, bad—it’s clear that someone behind the scenes knows what they’re doing—but the quantity doesn’t match the price… Two small tacos will run you no less than £10—each of which can be easily finished in 2-3 bites. And the “Small Plates” live up their name: often delivering more decoration than substance. (The stuffed squid, in particular, is a *tiny* portion at £11 a plate.) ► DRINKS: Disappointing and best avoided. A basic margarita will run you (at minimum) £10, and you’ll need AT LEAST two to begin to feel them. The variety and flavors are not necessarily bad, but the value is abysmal. ► ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is in a small space that can get crowded during dinner hours. During the summer, the outdoor tables provide a little more room to move your arms, but the vibe is usually pretty positive regardless of how crowded it gets. ► SERVICE: Not bad. The staff are friendly, though it can be a little slow to get to you if there’s a big party or a bunch of tables to serve. On one occasion, a friend did not get their starter until the rest of the table were receiving their mains, so it’s worth being clear and direct when ordering. ► PRICE: The breaking point, and the reason I will not go out of my way to return. With a starter, a main, and two drinks, you’re not leaving at any less than a £40 bill, which can buy you SO MUCH more at many of the other top-tier restaurants around Brighton. ▬▬▬ FINAL THOUGHTS ▬▬▬ I would LOVE to love Halisco; it’s one of the few Mexican restaurants in the area and the food isn’t actually bad... However, at its current pricing and quality, there are numerous other options around town where you’ll get *far* better value for your money. At the prices and the portions it offers, Halisco positions itself as worthy of a fancy dress night out…but nothing about it is so memorable to justify the bill at the end of the night. And even if Mexican is hard to find, there is (ultimately) both better Mexican and better margaritas elsewhere in town.

Conflicting experience. The dishes we tried were really tasty, generous and authentic Mexican. However, the atmosphere of the place was chaotic, rushed, distracted. The drinks menu is extensive, but devoid of description or visible passion for the ingredients. The decor, lighting and music were gaudy and aggressive and the seating was cramped beyond comfort. On the whole: great food, overstretched service, environment not for us.

Had a lovely Monday night dinner here and would definitely recommend. Drinks and small plates in particular were the highlight. The cheese and okra croquettes were one of the best dishes I’ve had in my life! For drinks we had a paloma and the tropical spicy mezcalita and they were both gorgeous. The tacos were also delicious, as expected. I had the cod tacos and my boyfriend had the pork belly (as they were out of the birria tacos) and we would both definitely recommend them. We weren’t a fan of the tortillas themselves as they were dry, ripped pretty easily, and had a floury taste- but the flavour and of the filling compensated for this. The sauces in the tacos were particularly delicious! There are some vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options clearly labelled It was pretty busy for a Monday so I can imagine it is rammed later in the week- I’d recommend booking ahead. Alongside the food, the service was also a highlight. Both staff members were lovely, particularly the waitress!

This was such a disappointment visit. I had this booked for two months as it’s hard to get a booking. The booking finally gets around and we walk in excited and immediately the server said to us ‘we need the table back at 7pm’ and sat us down. We got there at 6pm. We saw the server go straight to a table filled with girls and stayed there for 10 minutes and we watched him give them a free shot. We had no menu by this point. We got the menu and tried to flag down the server by 6:20pm. Our food came out 6:40pm/6:45pm and we rushed to eat it all as we knew we had 20 minutes. The food was alright. Wasn’t worth the wait and the service was so poor. The food was expensive for what it was. We paid overall £106 with a tip (as we always do) but felt so disappointed walking away from it. Such a shame. It’s right next door to Bincho and was sad we wasn’t in there instead.

The service and cocktails were brilliant. Regarding the food, the chefs are undeniably talented, and the dishes tasted superb. However, the value and portion sizes were disappointing. Many of their small plates are extremely small, particularly the squid, croquettes, and mutton lettuce tacos. The squid dish, priced at £11, was incredibly disappointing for what we paid. In total, we paid £110 for just a few small plates and some tacos. In my opinion, this is a lovely place to eat if value for money and portion size are not a concern for you.

Lovely Mexican spot in Brighton with very delicious tacos. Great choice of margaritas too. However, be aware the portion sizes. Between the three of us we ordered a few things and the stuffed squid was one of them. At a price of 10£ you would expect an acceptable portion considering it was under the small plates option. Disappointing. We had booked a table for my partners birthday dinner and had travelled in from London. Halfway through the meal we were told that a large group had shown up and asked if they could just "pop us on the counter upstairs" to finish our food/drinks so they could accommodate this group. We refused as we were enjoying the table and atmosphere downstairs (and were already told we had the table for a certain amount of time in the booking), but unfortunately felt very unwelcome and awkward after this interaction. One of the staff member was also quite hasty cleaning some tables and unluckily dropped a candle, which left wax stains on my partners fabric shoes. Safe to say it wasn't a great birthday experience. It's disappointing they aren't more organized as the food (apart from the tiny portion of guac) was good. Sad to say we won't be coming back.

I am particularly picky with Mexican food as the UK is overall tragic with Mexican cuisine. Although this restaurant isn’t the most “authentically” Mexican, it’s an absolute win! I would run back in a heartbeat because the food was just good food 🙌🏾 I’d give it a 9/10 - started lovely, well seasoned gauc, crispy chips and delicious cod croquettes. Buttery delicious corn ribs (which rarely get done properly in most restaurants) there was almost too much butter (said nobody ever) but I enjoyed it. ☺️ broccoli was well cooked and seasoned, tasted lovely. The oxtail birria taco was DELICIOUS, soft shell crab taco was the only slight let down, too much sauce drowning the crab. I think there’s potential, I just wish it was less salsa and the tacos was stripped back to a more baja like taco (fish, crunch and zesty crema) - not to drown the crab. Otherwise, still impressive. I was a happy unexpected diner, definitely recommend. Service was lovely too, keep up the good work! Even their drinks were delicious 😍 walk don’t run there

Had a fantastic lunch at this casual, friendly taqueria. From the friendly service from guys who obviously enjoy working there, to the *impeccable* food and drinks everything was amazing. From the first sip of a Virgin margarita to the last bite of my beef birria taco, this was a flavour explosion with every bite. The house hot sauce was fruity, sweet and super hot on the finish. Prawn aguachile was creamy fresh and bright. Comforting jalapeño hash browns filled us up before a pair of fish tacos and beef birria tacos - the latter being the best taco I’ve had, and after quite a few spins around this sun, that’s a high number and high praise indeed. This place made me glad I’d found it, nice to chat to the front of house team, and sampled some amazing food, I can’t rave about this place enough, you’ve gotta go!

Not worth the hype, or the money. Buzzing restaurant, but it seemed tonight, the staff were struggling to cope. No welcome, no menus. Table that arrived after us served before. Food was okay, corn chips burnt or just cooked, guacamole pretty bland. Hash browns and croquettes had elements that were good, but not memorable. Pork tacos dry. Veggie ones, good. The drinks were also really overpriced. We tried all the different types of Margaritas etc and they all tasted just like warm fruit syrup and arrived in a small tumbler. I can’t believe all the comments on here say it’s the place to go for Margaritas! Also try and avoid sitting by the door as it’s being opened and closed constantly and people are always walking into the back of you. We ordered a few light bites, and they came out one at a time with large breaks in between when we'd ideally have liked to have eaten them together. The tacos are very small for the price. On a whole, everything was pretty pricey, considering we weren't even full by the end and spent £70 (including 2 beers and a margarita). The food, however, tasted phenomenal. The pineapple hot sauce that came with our meal was so good I almost asked if I could buy a bottle!! Didn’t have our table ready for us when we arrived on time and had clearly overbooked as there had to be some shuffling around to accommodate us. Drinks took an age to arrive as they were ‘lost in transition’ according to one of the waiters. The small plates were very tasty, however half way through enjoying them we were told they had ‘cocked up’ some bookings and said that we had to move tables. This obviously wasn’t ideal as we were in the middle of eating but were at least allowed to finish our starters before being ushered to another table. We were begrudgingly given some free shots but only after asking due to the inconvenience. The food is great here but overall it’s so chaotic and just not a great vibe. It feels like they want to cram as many people in and money grab as much as possible. If a group arrives - let’s find somewhere to sit them with no regard to the how this may impact the customers already present. It’s a shame as the margaritas and food are great, the place just needs a bit more organisation, especially on a busy Saturday night!

Our first trip to Halisco today. Had a couple of great Margaritas. The pardon peppers were amazing. Both the fish & soft shell crab tacos were nice, although small. Could definitely have done with something else & will know to order a bit more next time. Sure we'll be back before too long.

Weren't taking card which was slightly annoying and we didn't really order enough food. What he had was great though

It’s cozy and feel homey in the restaurant. Food was yummy and tasty, we ordered pork belly, corn chips and tacos (soft shell crab and chicken), churros. Only comment about churros that not feel it cooked right, texture like Chinese bun (soft) not crispy like churros. Overall it was good and service was great.👍

Big fan of Halisco and eat here regularly, love the atmosphere and the food is delicious. The pricing recently seems a bit unreasonable. The margaritas are too small for the price. Would be good if they were served in proper tumblers, instead of tiny glasses. £5 for a small plate of guacamole is a bit wild, and £4 for tortilla chips. Then the salsa is £4.50. You should be able to get chips and dips in a casual setting like this without having to spend over a tenner. Also broccoli with a sauce shouldn’t cost £9, especially when the pork belly is only a pound more. Would really appreciate more fish / veg options which are not deep fried - whilst they are delicious, it can feel really heavy.

Me and my friends were really excited to try this place as the reviews looked fantastic. Although the food was edible, it really lacked flavour and punch. The mushroom tacos were slightly burnt and had no flavour at all. I spent £8 on a portion of brocoli which again lacked flavour and texture. The waitor walked off whilst we were in the middle of ordering and forgot to come back so we had to find another waitress to help. Overall the experience was mediocre and overpriced. The margaritas were awesome though!

Came here with my housemates and we had this booked for weeks and was super excited! Had heard loads of rave reviews but sadly didn't live up to our expectations. Service was OK though the waiter ran away in the middle of our order and forgot to come back so we had to call another waiter to finish. I had the melon marg, absolutely delicious and still thinking about it now! Also had both corn dishes, prawns, and crab tacos. Now when I think about Mexican food I think spice, fresh and zing... unfortunately the food we had was quite bland and lacked any spice or flavour. Also £8 for a little plate of tenderstem brocolli my housemate ordered was a bit much! I would say I'd like to come back again but with plenty of other restaurants in brighton I'm wanting to try, this will have to be on the back-burner before I give it another chance. I do believe it can be better though and I wish them the best of luck!

Absolutely out of this world food, and service with a smile! Had the waitress order us 6 random dishes and not tell us what they were - what an experience! Would come again in a heartbeat.

We visited Halisco for the first time to try the ''october best'' menu. Choosing to go for the Vegan option. The food was shocking to say the least, given the overwhelmingly positive reviews we were looking forward to this meal for weeks, booking well in advance to take advantage of the offer. The pickled veg starter was OK, probably the best part of the meal. This was followed by a mushroom dish that looked and tasted much more like a French dish than a Mexican one, the Texture of the mushrooms gave the impression they had been sitting around for a long time, as the block of mushrooms were dry and tough on the exterior and lacked any real texture inside. The main for this vegan menu was a pumpkin taco, which looked great, but the pickled onions on top were very slimy and the corn taco itself was VERY dry and hard, when holding the taco to begin to eat it, it broke apart at the bottom before folding, that's how dry it was.. Taking a bite into the breaded pumpkin, the pumpkin was very watery, the liquid pouring out of the bottom of the taco was just water, rather than what you might expect from a filled taco. The pumpkin had almost no flavour and seemed like it had been boiled and seasoned in a rush. The staff were reasonably attentive and did notice that I wasn't eating the food and asked if there was something wrong, when pointed out what the issue was with the meal, primarily the taco we were given an explanation that due to high demand, they had had to source the corn tortilla's for the taco's from a different supplier, and that they were ''just that way''. It seemed to be like they had been heated in a batch and had been sitting around for a long time, as they had lost all elasticity and had gone very dry, particularly around the edges. It was also explained that due to how the pumpkin was cooked, some of it would be wetter than others... Not exactly sure what that means, but what I was served was very poor and not appetising in the slightest. The member of staff did apologise and said they would give us a discount on the bill as an apology. My meal was 90% uneaten but I thought at least it was being handled appropriately. However upon receiving the bill, we discovered that we were given a 10% discount... £5 off for multiple courses being poor and one being completely unedible. I found this to be rather insulting given that the staff member that had given us the bill and issued the discount with had accepted that there were problems with the main course. Also worth noting that the tables were sticky and the floors were very slick. The whole experience left a lot to be desired and we would definitely not recommend Halisco.

Tacos were delicious - and the has browns and sea bass were really fantastic. But salsas were verging on inedible at a whopping £5 each (tasted like a bowl of Italian marinara sauce). Also paid £10 for 6 tiny Sainsbury’s sized prawns with no sauce on two dry tortillas. So a mixed bag really. Also pretty sure the stairs are a health and safety hazard and smells of damp

Came for the October Best £25 menu and left disappointed. Tiny portions with long, unexplained waits between some dishes. The food itself was average at best; not flavourful or exciting. The pork belly dish was the best although more of a satay than a mole. The dessert especially was bad, ‘tres leche ice cream’ turned out to be a melted scoop of vanilla drowned in almost too much booze (and we love a drink). The service and atmosphere didn’t feel very warm- as if there were too many tables for the space available. Overall we left feeling over-charged, underfed and underwhelmed.

Ridiculously overpriced. We spent 25 quid each on a set menu which did not include a drink. The portions were absolutely tiny. The “main” was literally a taco not much bigger than the palm of my hand. They certainly didnt load up on the filling either. Desert was melted ice cream in a large shot glass. The food did taste nice but it felt more like a sample than an actual meal. And for that price it is a bit of a joke. We left feeling like we had been scammed. Service was poor with a good 20-30 minutes between each bite sized dish. Definitely not worth the hype; i wont likely return. They also slapped on a big service charge as a parting gift.

The food was great but expensive for the quantity, sadly the pardon peppers were undercooked. Margaritas were great. Service was not great from 1 waiter.I never got her name but blonde waitress was very rude & had blunt almost angry tone, made me and my partner uncomfortable, service apart from her was fine. Atmosphere was great & nice scenery. I just wish the service was better.

Took some friends as had a lovely lunch there ages ago .. it was very busy , waiter spilt drink all over my friend and his starter ..no problem.. he replaced the drink and starter . A few things we wanted were off the menu ( sold out ) , so the 4 of us ordered the tacos... the filling was delicious but the tacos had all gone soggy . My friends couldn't identify a weird flavour in there's & the waiter couldn't tell us what it was . Was really disappointed to be honest . Recommend going around lunch when they are less busy
