We loved Anakuma and had heard such good things about Halisco so were really excited to try. For us it didn't live up to the hype. Super cramped, service was fine but not overly friendly or attentive. We tried a number of dishes but it was very hit and miss, many lacking in flavour. Not sure whether we'd give it another go unfortunately.

Food was fresh & authentic tasting but it took an hour and a quarter for our food (only 4 tacos) to come out. It is also super cramped and noisy which made for an uncomfortable experience. Staff were nice though! With slightly faster service & a couple less tables, this place could be perfect.

Visiting Brighton, we had Halisco highly recommended to us. We just about managed to get a table at 4 PM on a Sunday afternoon—it’s a very small, intimate restaurant. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive, which made for a warm welcome. We started with the smashed potatoes, which were a nice, flavorful opener. For mains, we had the chicken and pork tacos, but unfortunately, neither lived up to expectations. The pork was extremely dry, and I found some unpleasant bits in my chicken, which took away from the experience. We ended up leaving the majority of the food. While personal taste plays a role, the execution didn’t quite hit the mark for us. That said, it may have just been an off day, as everyone else we spoke to had nothing but praise for the place.

After coming here on Sunday for mine and my partners anniversary we left really disappointed and only spent half an hour at the venue. The atmosphere was really uncomfortable, lights full beam which, as I’m sure you can imagine, didn’t set a great vibe, the service was fine but we felt an element of ‘I can’t be arsed’ which was fairly uncomfortable and the general vibe was really off. Staff members in and out of the front door and leaving the door open which made it really drafty as well. The food was fine but for the price we were so disappointed. Nothing seemed to have much seasoning and it was all generally pretty underwhelming and lacking anything special. I’m so gutted as we’d heard amazing things from people so the bar was put pretty high but overall we felt pretty annoyed spending 70ish quid on a sub par, bland meal while also being made to feel like we were holding up the staff from leaving for the night. Maybe it was an off day, I appreciate it’s a Sunday evening but I was so excited to try this place! Feeling #sad

Booked a last minute table after our wedding anniversary plans fell through. Despite having issues with internet and music, the atmosphere was great (honestly wouldn’t have known there were issues if we hadn’t been told). Loved being able to hear the kitchen and the general buzz of the restaurant floor. Staff were so friendly and attentive and the food… the food was insane! I nearly cried at the first mouthful of the potato small plate, honestly the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten and haven’t stopped thinking about since for the past 24 hours! The tacos were superb, the pork belly being our favourite with the beef short rib a close second, and the beef tartare small plate was so rich and flavourful; a must try. We came across Halisco watching Adam Eats Britain and are so glad we did! Can’t wait to visit again soon and try even more of the fantastic menu.

The best place for Mexican food in Brighton - I’ve been here 4 times now and every time was a great as the last. Highly recommend both the Mushroom and Beef Birria tacos. The corn chips are also brilliant, but the guacamole is a bit overpriced, it’s very nice, but it is just guac. The small menu is a big green flag, you know that each item has had thought put into it, which really shows as everything is unique and tasty in its own way. The drinks are also great, the service/staff are very friendly, and it has a fun, busy atmosphere. It’s a must-visit place if you’re after some Mexican food as a treat.

Phoned up the restaurant, as I was advised to do by A&E the next day and they claimed we would've got it from somewhere else - WHAT A JOKE! 5/7 is a strong number of odds, given that some of us hadn't even seen eachother in years. The food was yummy, though perhaps a little overpriced. One of our wait staff was very attentive, the other was noticeably not. He didn’t take our order down properly as 10 minutes after we’d had our starter taken away, the attentive staff member asked if we were waiting for anything else, to which we said the tacos. The tacos came out 15/20 minutes later, so had obviously never been put through to the kitchen. The restaurant itself is extremely dirty. The sticky wooden tables have engraved patterns in them, where years of crusty old food and stains sit inside of. The floor is dirty and the staircase down to the toilets is covered in food and stains - clearly never mopped. The toilet had a broken toilet seat and the hand soap was empty. When we left, the inattentive staff member was standing in front of the door, moved to the side when he saw us, but didn’t say bye or thank you. Wouldn’t come back as the restaurant’s cleanliness is off-putting and if not for the attentive staff member, I think our experience would have been much worse.

I think that the food here is extremely overpriced for what you get. The tacos are small and the pork belly is definitely unimpressive. It was dry and basic and not at all worthy of the £10 price mark. We also had the prawn sharing plate. £12.50 for literally three prawns is a joke. £4 for a prawn is crazy to me. I don't understand why everything is so expensive. If you want to eat here and be full you'd need to spend £30+ on food alone, let alone drinks and service (friendly but not much to it). I came here a year ago and I was quite impressed. However now I can only suggest that you avoid! Don't listen to the hype. There's better places in Brighton with much greater value for money.

I was excited to try this place after hearing good things. Unfortunately I left a little disappointed. As other reviews mentioned, it is a small place and they could do with making sure all the tables are clean and not sticky when you sit down. We ordered a couple of starters which came out fairly quickly and were nice. The corn ribs were the highlight of the meal. If you go here hungry or in a rush do not get the tacos! Despite it being a Sunday lunch time and not even full it took nearly 45 minutes for two tacos to come out. Once they did arrive they weren’t even that hot. The crab taco was oily and the fish did not taste fresh. The sweet potato taco was a good veggie option but not worth the wait. Overall, I hoped for more as I love Mexican food. The starters were nice but the service was very slow. I won’t be rushing back.

We had a reservation at 9:30 and we showed up on time. They told us it would take a second to get to our table and we had to sit outside in the cold for at least 20 minutes. A guy came out and was so pushy offering chips and salsa and it seemed like it would be on the house after we were putting up with their disorganization, but we were charged for that and no drinks or anything comped. Once we sat down they didn’t give us a moment to breathe before making us order because the kitchen was closing which is not our fault because we should have been sat at a much earlier time and they should accommodate or cancel our booking instead of the half assed uncomfy experience we had. If they messed up the booking they should have communicated that so we could have gone somewhere else and enjoyed our night instead of being rushed to eat in and out of the door under 40 minutes with the most pushy waiter who stressed all of us out and then we had to pay for everything. In my experience usually restaurants are a little more accommodating so you should probably figure that out. Not loving how much I had to pay after all of that.

We'd heard very good things about Halisco and couldn't wait to try it. Chose a Sunday early afternoon and were informed they would need the table back in a little over an hour, which was fine. Tacos are usually quick to eat so figured 45 mins was plenty time. Put in our order with chips and guac and padrón peppers to start then three tacos for main. The starters were quick to arrive and the best dishes we had to eat. Then we waited almost an hour for the tacos, even though other tables who arrived after us received their food. Our server didn't even acknowledge us during this long delay and the three servers were hardly rushed off their feet, so an update would have been good. Eventually got our food, which was ok. Cod tacos good, crab tacos ok, sweet potato tacos a bit too tangy.

We were celebrating a few special occasions, and he made it memorable by helping us settle in and keeping the food and drinks flowing! The food was great. The food was the best bit about this place, and unfortunately that was just too oily. I’ve got to say it’s all tasty, it just needs less oil. The Elote corn was full of flavour, but dripping in oil. We had the cod tacos, crab tacos and Queso Birria to follow, I know the seafood ones are battered, but the batter is HEAVY, I expected the queso birria to be fairly oily, but by that point the oil from the other dishes and the broth that came with the birria was all getting a bit much. Classic marg was good 👍🏻 The service was a bit clunky. Took a while to get menus, & order. Didn’t get asked if we’d like another drink when clearing away the first round of drinks (while we still had food 🤷🏻‍♂️) The atmosphere is the worst bit unfortunately. It’s a really noisy room, nothing in there to soften the acoustics, despite there only being about 6 other diners inside at the time, the music, and the noise from the bar (glass & cutlery clinking, cocktails being made etc) made it really difficult to hear the waiter let alone have a conversation.

Overpriced food, disappointingly small portions, frustratingly weak drinks, all at a premium price that will leave you disappointed. The variety and flavors are not necessarily bad, but the value is abysmal. ► ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is in a small space that can get crowded during dinner hours. During the summer, the outdoor tables provide a little more room to move your arms, but the vibe is usually pretty positive regardless of how crowded it gets. ► SERVICE: Not bad. The staff are friendly, though it can be a little slow to get to you if there’s a big party or a bunch of tables to serve. On one occasion, a friend did not get their starter until the rest of the table were receiving their mains, so it’s worth being clear and direct when ordering. ► PRICE: The breaking point, and the reason I will not go out of my way to return. With a starter, a main, and two drinks, you’re not leaving at any less than a £40 bill, which can buy you SO MUCH more at many of the other top-tier restaurants around Brighton. ▬▬▬ FINAL THOUGHTS ▬▬▬ I would LOVE to love Halisco; it’s one of the few Mexican restaurants in the area and the food isn’t actually bad... However, at its current pricing and quality, there are numerous other options around town where you’ll get *far* better value for your money. At the prices and the portions it offers, Halisco positions itself as worthy of a fancy dress night out…but nothing about it is so memorable to justify the bill at the end of the night. And even if Mexican is hard to find, there is (ultimately) both better Mexican and better margaritas elsewhere in town.

Spectacular small plates (the tacos are great as well), very small place. It was very loud when we were there. Can‘t miss if you‘re in Brighton

Conflicting experience. The dishes we tried were really tasty, generous and authentic Mexican. However, the atmosphere of the place was chaotic, rushed, distracted. The drinks menu is extensive, but devoid of description or visible passion for the ingredients. The decor, lighting and music were gaudy and aggressive and the seating was cramped beyond comfort. On the whole: great food, overstretched service, environment not for us.

Tasty food, but don't expect to be full afterwards unless you want to spend a lot.; very expensive for the actual quantity of food you get. Also very cramped inside

Waited two hours for food, no apology then we were told as a sign of good will our optional service fee was taken off….service was pretty awful considering this was a special birthday meal. They’ve lost 10 customers.

Had a lovely Monday night dinner here and would definitely recommend. Drinks and small plates in particular were the highlight. The cheese and okra croquettes were one of the best dishes I’ve had in my life! For drinks we had a paloma and the tropical spicy mezcalita and they were both gorgeous. The tacos were also delicious, as expected. I had the cod tacos and my boyfriend had the pork belly (as they were out of the birria tacos) and we would both definitely recommend them. We weren’t a fan of the tortillas themselves as they were dry, ripped pretty easily, and had a floury taste- but the flavour and of the filling compensated for this. The sauces in the tacos were particularly delicious! There are some vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options clearly labelled It was pretty busy for a Monday so I can imagine it is rammed later in the week- I’d recommend booking ahead. Alongside the food, the service was also a highlight. Both staff members were lovely, particularly the waitress!

This was such a disappointment visit. I had this booked for two months as it’s hard to get a booking. The booking finally gets around and we walk in excited and immediately the server said to us ‘we need the table back at 7pm’ and sat us down. We got there at 6pm. We saw the server go straight to a table filled with girls and stayed there for 10 minutes and we watched him give them a free shot. We had no menu by this point. We got the menu and tried to flag down the server by 6:20pm. Our food came out 6:40pm/6:45pm and we rushed to eat it all as we knew we had 20 minutes. The food was alright. Wasn’t worth the wait and the service was so poor. The food was expensive for what it was. We paid overall £106 with a tip (as we always do) but felt so disappointed walking away from it. Such a shame. It’s right next door to Bincho and was sad we wasn’t in there instead.

Truly great Mexican restaurant. Was not expecting to eat chorizo filled squid today, and definitely not expecting it to be absolutely killer. Oxtail/brisket birria was tender, messy and with an amazing broth to dunk in. Hoping to come back and work through the rest of the menu!

Been looking forward to coming here for ages as had so many good recommendations. So pulled the trigger and booked a birthday meal for my wife with the kids… Arrived to be told we had to sit downstairs as they had a big group coming. ( why they couldn't sit downstairs I’m unsure? ) Ended up being the only ones down there. No vibe at all and smelt really damp. Sacked it off and left. Absolutely gutted.

We go in here for lunch on quieter midweek days. Good food and drink choices for vegan and gluten intolerant people. The place also has great baby change facilities on the same level as the restaurant.

We live less than 2 mins away from here and was looking forward to trying one of their margaritas . We arrived on my partner's birthday(!!) and refused a drink unless we purchased a full meal; we offered to buy some smaller/plates of snacks but were refused. Service was quite rude and un-accommodating. A week prior we ordered a takeaway to pick up and again service was quite rude and the food was underwhelming (Burritos) and overpriced. We thought we would give it a second chance as we live so close, but wont be returning.

Tasty burrito at Glastonbury but very small and expensive, mostly wrap, and pretty light weight
