Watched a few football matches here - good location and drinks are really well priced. The live music on a weekend is great and always a good crowd.

Went to a friend's birthday here - staff both on the door and behind the bar were lovely, attentive and helpful. My friend had a great time and would definitely visit again.

I watched the Euros final here - staff were reasonably good considering how busy it was and drinks are reasonably priced. Would definitely visit again, a good pub.

First of all Hagen&Hyde always has such a nice atmosphere and last night it was extra busy! You could see the staff were all working so hard, it was non-stop! I was there with a friend and we noticed two older men videoing us which obviously made us uncomfortable. We asked if there was any other free tables and the staff were so lovely and moved us upstairs - no questions asked. The men ended up leaving after being spoken to by staff and then we were offered pints on the house. They really went above and beyond- which they didn’t need to do! But thank you so much to Hagen for making the pub a safe space for women :)

Reading all the other reviews this is not the best pub in Balham! Came here for a few drinks which was fine; then decided to order food. I ordered nachos, big mistake!!!! It was the worst nachos I have ever tasted I can do better at home. It was just a bowl of dried nachos with no toppings! This needs to be taken off the menu. I paid £9 for the privilege save your money, don’t bother. If you want nachos go to the Bedford pub on Bedford hill. They do the best nachos that I have ever tasted at half the price and they are the best pub in Balham with better atmosphere and vibes. Save your money don’t buy the nachos ever;stock to the drinks only.

The best pub in Balham, and there’s tough competition. Brilliant staff, lots of room, great outdoor space and handling COVID really well. Great prices and great selection, can’t recommend it enough.

This is probably one of the best pubs in Balham! The staff are friendly and attentive and the beer is lovely (recommend the locally brewed ale Volden). The food here is also great, they currently have a limited menu due to covid but are happy to make changes/alterations on things if you’re veggie/vegan/gf to accommodate you. Great pub for a quiet pint or to watch sport downstairs! 5/5

Celebrated my son’s 30th in Hagen last Sat night, and what a night it was! Our group had a beautifully laid out area, white tablecloths, piping hot delicious party platters. After the birthday cake, we partied and danced till closing time, could not have been better. Huge thanks to Benjy, Nell...and Tom!

Popped in for a quick drink - lovely atmosphere good music and some very quirky paraphernalia on the walls - the EHO might suggest a clean of those parasols though :-)

Nice ambiance and decor. Good service liked the space and games available to play! The toilets were horrendous which is why this review gets only four stars.

Its kind of cool inside but like other reviewers said it could do with a really good cleaning. It smelled inside and the service could be better. There weren't many people in there and the employees were going over the books etc instead of asking if we were alright or needed another beer /drink. Probably could have sold us triple if they would have asked.

Hagen and Hyde I came to the door of the Hagen and Hyde at about 12.20am on Saturday/Sunday on 21st July 2019, I walked to the door and there was a female doorperson and a male doorperson, I was stopped by the female doorperson who quite aggressively told me that the establishment was full, I looked into the venue and it was clearly not full, I said it didn’t seem full, she said it was full and she suggested that I go for a drink elsewhere, I said I would wait until the venue was less full, she said it would be a long wait. After a few minutes , I noticed that people were coming out of the venue, so the venue was getting ‘less full’… by this time, the female security person had gone inside and there was a male doorperson on the door. I saw more people entering and leaving the venue, so I then asked the doorman if I could go in…he unenthusiastically said yes…I stepped into the venue and saw as it was even less full than I had initially thought, I said to the doorman that ‘it isn’t as full, as you said it was ’…I continued to walk some way in, then I had a grab on my shoulder, it was the doorman, he said I had to leave…I said why?...he said he didn’t like my attitude. Later, I asked him why I wasn’t allowed in and ejected, he said that I spoke to him rudely which I hadn’t, I just observed that the venue wasn’t as full as he and his colleague had previously said. I would like to know why I had initially let into a venue which clearly wasn’t full. I was dressed appropriately I wasn’t drunk or aggressive What was the real reason, and why was I met with such a aggressive attitude and thrown out? Also have any other people had a similar experience in this establishment?

The initial smell in the bar I thought there must be stables at the back. The downstairs area was dirty and stained seating. We left to go upstairs and it was marginally better due to an open door. We saw the galley kitchen which didn't look clean and the chef had no protective clothing. Generally dirty all round.

Good atmosphere with lovely roof terrace. A shame then that apart from the second bar not being opened thereby necessitating horrendous queues at the bar,a friend and o ordered 2 chicken wings starters which were 90% batter. Won't be going back there.

Mixed reviews about this placeGood: Turns up after 10, good DJ downstairs, great atmosphere overall.-the hot water system had malfunctions in the ladies bathroom but there was signage to avoid any incidences hopefully.For improvement: - a friend was served a very watered down coke which thankfully was replaced.-I ordered the steak which came with fries but the waitress said she wasn’t acquainted with this change in the menu so we had to wait for the fries to be made -service is slow overall and some of our party who ordered first got their food last (at least an hour later) but grateful if that means the food is being freshly made. Other: -portions are small -they had run out of wine glasses so was offered wine in an alternative glass not so classy for a ladies night out -some staff were apologetic for the delay with food-some bar staff were new members of the team, probably not the best to have them start on a Friday night

Popped in and was pleased to find different levels and a lovely beer garden out the back. The food was delicious and good value but the service was slow and they got my order wrong on this occasion.

Recently, I had a lovely evening at the Hagen and Hyde and whilst I appreciated a different colour straw in my g&t; each time (apart from the paper ones do go soggy). I did find it unnecessary that they deep fry the chicken wings (it isn't mentioned in the description so confused us). However, a good bar with a good atmosphere, just not so keen on chicken wings which taste like doughnuts.

Went back for Sunday roast after having Friday night dinner. Very eclectic decor, good beers, and good food. Place fills up early on Friday evening. Sunday roast was quite tasty and filling. Lots of good.

Estado aquí unas cuantas veces, es uno de mis favoritos de bares en la zona. Have been to this pub a few times, good atmosphere and nice selection of drinks. Have only eaten off the snack menu but I can tell you the wings were fab!

Booked for Sunday lunch, 4 adults (one in a wheelchair) and a dog. First impressions weren't good - I know it's meant to have a shabby retro appearance but it felt scruffy and unclean. We were shown to a small table in the corner with 3 backless stools on one side and a heavily stained backless padded bench on the other - our backs against an upright piano. I asked far a seat with a back for my elderly mother, which was brought to me. No one offered us a drink or brought us a menu, nor told us to collect one - after about 10 minutes, we worked that out for ourselves. The menu was sparse - a few starters, then roasts or sandwiches. Meatballs were on a blackboard - I asked for that - they were off. The end of the bar was littered with tea towels, old serviettes and various other bits of rubbish. In the end we upped and left. Poor show!

I live around the corner, so have been here several times to meet friends for drinks but only recently decided to try the food. I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich, and it was amazing! It is a friendly pub that does live music and a pub quiz on Mondays. The toilets are a little on the shocking side, and get worse the later the night goes on.

Very disappointing food and overpriced for what it was Also the portions were not great and left feeling hungry. The steak salad was overpowered by the sauce and very little steak

Visited this pub on Saturday night with friends. Fantastic atmosphere on the lower level where the band played, would definitely recommend to others. Toilets could do with an upgrade...

Went to H&H on a Saturday evening with a few friends before moving on to a birthday party. We popped in here on the off chance and were instantly impressed. It had a great atmosphere and good music. Good selection of drinks available and reasonably priced. Was really just starting to warm up when we left about 9pm but would definitely go back to experience a full night out here!

One of the newer pubs in Balham, and has become a firm favourite. A great crowd, open late (2am) and mixes comfortable drink with 'going a little silly' well (particularly if you head downstairs). Could comment deeply on design (it's rustically good) but for me personally, I'd rather focus on other things: that it always delivers. Good range of draught and, what's really impressive, is how welcoming and friendly the door staff are. Whereas some places can be somewhat dismissive, at H&H bouncers are very personable. One particular standout is Nicholas. He epitomises friendly door staff...offering advice on where to drink, why H&H is cool, and general great chat. Overall - great venue and an absolute must if you're drinking in Balham

Lovely pub/ restaurant in Balham. Near Rail/ underground. Good selection of beers and wine. Staff are friendly. I was served by Emily who took time to chat and was so helpful. Staff like her make a bar/ restaurant. Lovely beer garden at rear of bar. Excellent if weather good. Visit H and H any time I'm in Balham.

I drink at the Hagen & Hyde fairly often but never thought to test the food beyond a packet of peanuts until recently and I'm glad to say I did.The hot dog and fries is very filling and the halloumi fritters were pretty tasty too! Good selection of drinks here and the music is usually pretty good with an eclectic playlist from soul to pop. Gets lively from around 9pm on a weekend but can be pretty quiet up until then despite being busy.Nice sized beer garden but if you are a non-smoker seeking the sun - you will pay the price of second hand smoke. Not greatly accessible for wheelchair users as there are lots of steps to get outside or upstairs or downstairs to the loo.

Nice late night stop, quick service, happy staff and great atmosphere always happy to have a drink here and food always looks good!

Good choice of beers and good music, a nice and relaxed environment, a good enough Sunday roast, a large screen to watch sports, a good beer garden, what more you need.

This place is a real find. Located on the High Street in Balham, it is easy to walk past but please don't - you've got to try this pub. The staff are friendly and helpful, beers on draught and bottled provide an excellent selection, including my favourite IPA - Southpaw. Once inside you quickly notice that the pub extends deep into the rear of the building and provides plenty of space, including tables and chairs throughout, for friends to catch up. An eclectic feel from the old style Singer sewing machines at the front of the pub, to the miss matched tables and chairs in the back, this is quickly becoming a favourite haunt in Balham.

Visited here on a Sunday, it was a Rugby day so all the pubs were full but had heard they did a good roast! My friend and I ordered separately but within the space of 2 minutes - I asked for mine with Cauliflower Cheese and the waitress suggested I had it in a side dish for my friend to have. I said okay! 30 minutes later my friends meal arrives and there's no sign of mine - it takes another 20 minutes for it to arrive by which point she had finished. Low and behold the cauliflower cheese was on the plate (I have an allergy) so we had to send it back. All I was told was that the waiter was new 'sorry'. The meal eventually came and it was cold - certainly not worth the £12 I paid. We weren't offered any compensation rather a new member of staff was blamed. I certainly wouldn't come back here for food, I'd rather go to McDonald's, and that's saying something.

We were looking for a bite to eat and went to the Hagen and Hyde as it was quite late and in the area we were staying. We ordered platters to share and the food was really quite good. Prices were good too. Its got lots of character and I would definitely go again even just for drinks if I was in the area.

Found this by accident. Great atmosphere with a mix of clientele. Cool decor and lighting, and a good selection of beer and wine.

Having lived in London for many years, upon return I was dubious about this place, it looked typically cool just a little quirky....but none of that mattered when we first got served by a lady, who I think was probably the manager, she explained the beers to us, very well,we had one and went on our way. The next day we came back and had two of their starters, wings and squid the best squid I've had in a long time the batter was so fine and the wings were to die for. Then we had two burgers the chicken and the beef, both were excellent, being from Bristol but, having had lived in London we were both shocked at the quality and the price. Would definitely recommend to friends, and I cannot wait to return, thank you.....

Believe it or not but from 3pm it's tough finding somewhere that serves Sunday lunch! After visiting three pubs I finally got the last portion of beef here at Hagen and Hyde. Very generous portion and really tasty. Potatoes were a bit dry but other than that spot on. Friendly staff and overall a nice little lunch!

A cracker in the middle of Balham high rd. Great selection of beers and approachable food offering. The corn dog is great. Had a small gathering there one Sunday and everything was spot on. Big screen too for any sport fans

Sunday lunch for 4, booked the evening before. Nice atmosphere in the pub/bar area, upstairs in the 'restaurant' area was a bit quiet when we arrived, but got busier while we were there. We were told it was table service when we booked then asked to order at the bar when we arrived. We ordered 2 roasts beefs & 2 pork bellies. The waitress was dashing around looking very flustered, i think she was the only waitress by the looks of things. Food arrived fairly quickly. Pork belly was good & beef ok, just a bit over cooked with string attached to the meat still. Roast potatoes sadly not crispy, carrots undercooked (not al dente.. hard!) and cabbage was dull. For £14 it was a very average roast. Wouldn't return, plenty of other better roasts around for the same price.

Despite never writing reviews i felt it was my duty in this case....Met some friends here for drink and a quick bite.While i want drinking everyone sunk over 4 pints so there was no complaints there!The biggest surprise was the food which i found outstanding. 3x ribs, 1 steak and 1 pork belly all turned up in good time and excellently cooked. The steak was well cooked and one of the best my mate had eaten in a pub, the pork belly on bortolli beans with crispy sage leaves was an absolite winner, amazingly cooked.This is the kind of place from the outside i would walk straight past, nestled on a busy high street, but great food makes it an absolute winner. Keep up the good work...

After standing at a bar and being passed over for three locals I walked out and found the Hagen and Hyde across the road. Great welcome. Served straight away and interesting menu. Went for Breaded Herb Haddock in a toasted brioche, chips and a pint of bitter. Brilliant pub, good blues music. Just the job.

The atmosphere was and relaxed and they have a very good selection of beers to choose from, they also have many different kinds of flavoured liquors (if your into that kind of thing). There is also lots of seating however it was all a bit try hard. The front decor did not match the rear. In the back room the music was also way to loud. I would go back but not for food, it's a place for a quick pint after work.

The location is excellent and the premises are great, if a bit over-distressed in places.The beers are interesting and a small sample enables you to choose something delicious.Service is charming and spot on.The food is missing something - it needs a bit more inspiration and challenge. I went slightly off menu and I got the best dinner on the table because somebody had to work on it. We eat often at another Antic pub (The Antelope) and that is so much better.This pub is overall very good - it just needs more stimulus in the kitchen to be brilliant.

This place has a lovely cosy atmosphere in winter and plenty of seating making It one of the best spots in Balham for an after-work drink. I've eaten in the upstairs restaurant before (about Feb / March 2014 time) and was so pleasantly surprised- it's a tiny kitchen which is exposed to all the diners so that can see the chefs at work. Our waiter who appeared to be the 'front of house' was superb and was really enthusiastic about the ingredients and was talking about the qualtity of the meat and how it was grass fed, and sourced locally. We decided to go with the sharing steak - it was delicious and pefect for three people. I went back last night and we ordered drinks. Rather worryingly, we had to send them all back as there was suspicious brown lumps floating in all of our glasses. There was a new bar menu for those who want to eat downstairs in the buzzy but snug back room - we thought we'd try it as it looked great, nothing didn't sound appetizing. I placed the order at the bar with a bar-maid who asked me to pay up front. This isn't something I like to do normally but nonetheless did. The starters came out in good time and were delicious- really recommend the squid! Then, we waited and waited for the burgers. About 45 minutes later, two of the three turned up. We waited a further 10 minutes before deciding to go and ask where the third was. Annoyingly, we found out that it had been forgotten and the order hadnt reached the kitchen, but that they would start cooking it then. The portion of chips that we had ordered came with the first two burgers but we found chips that had been bitten in half in there....a little disconcerting...are they re-cycling old chips left by customers?! By the time we had finished our burgers, about 45/50 minutes later, the pulled pork burger came out- this was at 9.30pm and we had arrived at 8..! To give them their credit, my friend said it was delicious and it did look really good. They also were kind enough to gift a free pint of beer for him. All in all, we were left disappointed with the service, we had three or four different waiters over the evening however none of them asked whether the food was ok or whether we'd like more drinks. I totally appreciate that this isn't a 'swanky' restaurant and I love it for that, but in other pub/restaurants in Balham, the waiters will always do this and it's a shame that H&H don't. I probably will give it another chance as I love the quality of food but just rather poor service and questionable hygene...

The biggest plus of this pub is the ability to get a Sunday Roast at around 5 - 6pm when all other pubs in Balham/Wandsworth Common have ran out. It's saved us twice already after trying about 4 other pubs beforehand. The quality and quantity of the roast is decent... Not amazing but better than average. There is a great selection of beers - both cask and keg - and the venue is not as distressed as other Antic pubs (Antelope, Wheatsheaf). It is a massive venue if you take into account the decent beer garden and terrace. The normal restaurant menu is good with a leaning towards fish.It does suffer from a lack of atmosphere and it could be due to McDonalds next door and a busy bus stop out front.Overall, it's a pub I often find myself in without the deliberate intention of going to and it doesn't disappoint in that regard. It also opens late on weekends (around 2am from memory).

Decided to pop in here with my friends for a post night out Sunday morning roast and was pleasantly surprised! Although the restaurant seating area is slightly less desirable than the quirky bar area, we were seated and served quickly by a very friendly and charming waiter who was there for our every need. Food was brought out in good timing and none of us had any complaints, even had my chicken off the bone as requested! Reasonably priced for London too, would return in the future.

I took my mum to Hagen & Hyde for Sunday lunch yesterday - what a waste! First our drinks arrived - the bitter shandy was completely flat. Then we waited for our food. And waited. And waited, even as our neighbours who had arrived well after us were served first. Finally the food arrived - our order of roast potatoes had somehow transformed into fries, and when we pointed this out the waitress could not have cared less. Not so much as an apology. Moreover, the menu stated the steak would be served in a 'seeded bun' - not a seed in sight. The meat itself was chewy, the lettuce old.I really would not recommend this place. The service was shoddy and the food even worse. Such a shame as it looks inviting from the outside.

Popped in for a cold drink with two friends after work on a hot afternoon. I tried the Amstel first and got through it - although it tasted a little odd - so moved on to the only other alternative, a Scottish lager which tasted awful, faintly reminiscent of oil. When I complained they said there was nothing wrong with it and refused to change it. This is the first time I've been to this pub, and the last, despite it being local to me.

Went for roast dinner, and paid £13.95 for one slice of meat, 3 small potatoes and some veg.. No Yorkshire pudding as the menu you says 'we don't serve them as we don't think you need them'. Well feedback is with that size of portion is yes, you really do!My friend ordered fish pie which was a sloppy mix of potatoes and cheese sauce... No really fish to be seen. When we complained the chef argued we were wrong and there was nothing wrong with it... Our experience was topped off with the waitress spilling my friends drink, not replacing it and then adding it to the bill! I am a resident and a potentially good customer but I will not be returning.
