If you want a great experience for breakfast I am not sure I would choose Habit. It's probably better as an evening venue. It smelt of beer and was still being cleaned from the previous night's festivities when we arrived for brunch at 10:30 on a week day. We were the only ones. The food was basic but nice, as was the service. We all ordered the avocado on toast with a poached egg.. and it was exactly that, with no frills. 4 slices of avocado... I think they stretched 1 avocado between all 4 of us. It was reasonably priced for the location... central London.

This is part of the Davy's wine bar chain, situated next to Fenchurch Street station. As such, I would have expected people in the bar on a Friday night. Instead there were a small group watching the football on TV and nothing else. We had the dining area to ourselves (noone else ate there the entire evening) and yet my companion's burger was still burnt when served and had to be sent back. My food was fine but it spoilt the evening somewhat in that we weren't actually eating together! The only saving grace was the service was good - the waitress was also covering the bar, so I dread to think what might have happened if the place had been busy!! - and the 2-4-1 offer on food (although - again - we did need to point this out as the original bill did not include the discount).

I had my birthday drinks here on a Friday night and hired half of ther bar which is a considerably large area. The team were very accommodating and helpful with our veggie food requests and keeping my cupcakes in the fridge. The bar doesn't get too busy in the evenings so it's great if you want somewhere with space to meet/celebrate with friends to celebrate a birthday or other function. Would have no hesitation in going again.

Often come here as it's not far from my office and my boss doesn't like walking. Underground restaurant which is very rustic inside. Not a great deal of choice on the menu but ok typical British cuisine - nothing to shout and scream about though. Service is also very old fashioned but generally pretty good, could be slightly cheerier though. Peroni's on tap which is a positive. Reasonable prices but there are plenty of other places in The City which I feel are better value for money and have a better atmosphere.

Went here today lunch time. Ordered 3 steak sandwiches from the menu. Only 1 turned up as ordered so sent 2 back. I asked for my steak to be well done & it was served to me rawer than my 2 friends who had asked for it medium rare, there was even blood on the plate! I had to send back & leave in the end as they just couldn't get our order right. The venue was quiet & only 2 other tables ordering food, not one of these 2 tables were served during the hour we were there. Poor service & poor food.

The Habit is a reliable choice for lunch, like most Davy's places. The food is traditional but done very well, with a good selection of dishes from hearty fare to vegetarian options. The wine list is excellent, which you'd expect from a wine merchant, with well chosen options, without being too long. You won't go wrong with any of the house options. Prices were reasonable for a City location and there is no piped music, which I preferred.

Davy's wine bars have been a part of the London scene for more than 30 years. They have a deserved reputation for good wine and well-cooked simple fare. We were disappointed, though, in Habit. The decor is typical of Davy's, having the appearance of what I imagine a city coffee house might have been like. There are plenty of oak and barrels about the place. There are bar and restaurant areas with lots of alcoves and semi private rooms. In times gone by, a Davy's would have been jam packed at 8 o'clock on a Friday evening but there were just four people watching TV in the bar area, a group of six dining in one of the rooms and my wife and me. It is true the Rio Olympics on TV were a counter attraction but ... The menu is basic and brief. We chose crab toast to start. This comprised two slices of barely toasted bread spread with marie rose sauce and piled high with crab meat. The whole thing was topped with a fennel, avocado and chilli concoction which in colour was grey to the point of looking unappetising, and whilst it did not taste unpleasant, the fennel masked the avocado. Our main course was fish and thrice cooked chips. The fish was fine, although the batter could have been crispier and the portion larger. Cooking chips three times is something of a foodie fad that is fast becoming a cliche. The chips were soggy and waxy rather than crispy and fluffy inside. The accompanying mushy peas were well minted and tasty but an unfortunate luminous green in colour. Service was prompt and cheerful seemingly in apology for the lack of ambience. The bill, including a glass of wine each was a reasonable enough £50. I can't help feeling, though, there is better to be had elsewhere for not much more money. I hope Davy's can put some quality into the food and some vibrancy into the atmosphere and that in so doing they would attract more customers and create a venue that would capture some of the popularity of Davy's from the 1980s.

Situated on a quiet street between Aldgate and Tower Hill, this underground wine bar and restaurant is a hidden gem! This is a great place for a quiet date, particularly if you want to avoid the hubbub of nearby St Katharine Docks on a weekend night. We arrived at 9.15pm on a Friday evening (note the restaurant closes at 10pm), but the waiter was really friendly and willing to accommodate us. It was pretty empty around this time, but was nice to get away from the noise and clamour, as we'd just been in a pub where you could barely hear each other. The waiter recommended us both a glass of red, which was delicious, and then I went for the bangers & mash with gravy (felt like some solid comfort food), and my date had the pork chop with samphire and mash, which I hear was very good. The mash was excellent (really creamy but just the right consistency!). My dish also came with some really yummy onion rings - usually I'm not a massive fan as they can be very oily and greasy, but these were spot on. My only criticism would be that the sausages weren't great - they just seemed a little 'tired'. They were perfectly edible, but nothing special. The waiter, as mentioned already, was fantastic. Despite the fact that the restaurant was meant to close at 10pm, he told us to take our time, was very attentive, and just seemed like a really decent guy. We were also able to use my tastecard, which was a real bonus. I'd definitely recommend this place if you happen to be in the area and looking for a quiet spot for dinner (especially if you have a tastecard!)- the steaks are meant to be great too, but not really within my budget!

We had dinner on Monday night, we were the only diners. This was a shame as the food and wine were both excellent. The menu is limited, steak or burgers but what they lack in choice they more than make up for in the quality.Well worth a visit if you are a fan of steak and the triple cooked chips aren't just a gimmick they really are extra crunchy. They wine bar also serves good larger and ales and they have an excellent wine list.

The new menu is a triumph. Great steaks are back after the rather strange blip when they seemed to change supplier. Wine list is good and in my opinion excellent value. The staff here are wonderful. Most have been here for many years which says a lot. They are always welcoming and helpful. There has been the odd glitch when very busy and short staffed and I did have one horror visit when half the menu was unavailable due to a late delivery on a Monday but that is just one occasion out of the literally dozens of times I have eaten here. The best Davy's place in the City by a mile.Great food, fantastic staff, great value - what is there not to like.

We booked dinner for 4 on a Thursday evening at 8pm - I had never been before and it accepts tastecard so I was keen to try it out. We were quickly informed when we sat down that most of the menu was now not available which was my first gripe as the restaurant was empty and it wasn't like it was particularly late. We ordered but was then informed we only had 2 sirloin, only 1 pork belly...it got a bit ridiculous. The food then took a long time to arrive which again, given the fact we were one of only 2 tables in the restaurant meant I wasn't much impressed. The food when it finally did get there was decidedly mediocre. The soup to start was very poor, I could honestly do a better job myself and that's saying something, and the steak I ordered was very over cooked (I ordered blue, it came back medium-well). The waiter noticed me cut into my steak and saw how overdone it was which was awkward as he asked if it was ok and normally I would have asked for another, but knowing fine well it was the last steak they had I said it was fine. The steak arrived literally on its own on the plate, no salad, garnish, tomato, nothing. It looked very sad. The rest of my friends were equally disappointed. The portions were small, tepid, and it just seemed not much thought or effort had gone into it.All in all a very disappointing evening and I won't be returning. I used my tastecard but if I hadn't been getting 50% off the food already I would have asked for it off my bill as the whole experience was just sub par.Oh, and bring a jacket. I ate my tasteless food with my jacket on as the place was so cold.

We have used this restaurant for entertaining clients and brokers extensively over the last few months. The food, drink and service have been excellent and surprisingly good value for a business district venue. The Davy's white bergundy is a great wine with starters. I love the potted shrimps starter and Hake main. Ask for a Davy's reward card if you are likely to be a regular as it gives you good benefits. The service is superb. We had a bit of a hitch today in our meal ( I won't go into details) but the response by the management and our waiter were so superb that absolutely all is forgiven. Well done, The Habit.

This Davy's wine bar is underneath Friary Court, an unusual "quarter moon" shaped 1980s office building (hence the name - get tit?). You cannot miss it, because it's pink! There is a "sit down" restaurant area which I have never used, but I visit the wine bar regularly at lunch time with a group of friends. We tend to sit down for several bottles of wine plus sandwiches, chips and mini sausages, which banishes the hunger pangs very effectively. The house Rioja is a favourite with us at just over £20 per bottle and the sandwich variety is good. Whilst not huge, there is plenty of room for groups from 2 - 6 to stand or sit. Trying to sit a group of more than 6 would be tricky though. We usually book a table, although that isn't essential unless there are a lot of you. As mentioned by another reviewer, access is down a narrow staircase, so not recommended to anyone who struggles with stairs. This aside, The Habit, is a cut above the usual Davy's wine bare and good competition for others in that market.

This is probably the best of the Davy's chain in the City. Yes its down steep stairs, inaccessible to people with walking difficulties, and yes the chairs are on the tight side unless you are an average build, but the food, service and beers are worth going for,They do serve traditional real ales in pewter tankards, unlike near neighbour the City Flogger (avoid if you fancy a decent pint) and the food is good quality, freshly cooked. Scotch eggs and the cheeseboard (very eclectic) are 2 specialties. You need to book as the seating is limited and the bar does get busy at lunch times.

We're literally based opposite this venue so it makes for an ideal destination when entertaining clients or just continuing internal business meetings in more convivial surroundings.Menu includes sandwiches, light bites and meals but given that I and a colleague are both on wheat-free diets, they are happy to adapt meals accordingly. We provided the bread on this occasion but they made up sandwiches and cheese on toast for us. Food is of a high quality given the destination and reasonably priced too. If using this venue at lunchtime during the week its advisable to book a table or standing room if you are in parties of 4 or more.
