Gurkha Cottage in Croydon

The prawns tasted funky and after we told the waiters. He said that it was how it supposed to be. Clearly it wasn’t, It is not our first time eating Asian food. We were not offered a replacement dish of any sort. In the end We did not eat it and after asking for a discount the waiter felt the right to get upset with us (yes, he got upset, the poor thing and we were the one being asked to pay for bad food) he refused the discount saying that he wouldn’t do it just because we didn’t like the food?!! Good job! Keep treating your customers like that.

I don't use to write such a bad review, however they gave me no choice. I have never had such a long and mediocre experience in a restaurant. We sat at 7.30pm and the restaurant was nearly empty. After a while we ordered 2 starters and 5 main courses. The starters arrived in 20 minutes and the rest of the food at 9.40 when we were nearly leaving the restaurant after have asked few times about our order. The food was OK. Expect my order who was wrong. I received something like peas and zucchini when I asked for a mix grill. They brought me another one which was supposed to go to another table. The meat and the fish was dried and not so tasty. We ate everything because we were really starving at that point but I actually didn't finish mine, so I shared with my friends who agreed with me about the quality. We paid our bill and after that we said we should have been entitled to have a discount. The answer was that the service charged hadn't been added because of that. The service charge is optional and, of course, we weren't willing to pay for that. A discount and an apology would have been very kind and shown some respect for the customers. Inconveniences happen but the attitude was unacceptable. Please don't go. Ps:the table behind us waited 2 hrs as well, the table in our right was out in 20 minutes. Basically,everything is randomly served.

Called at 6 o’clock on a Monday evening to find the door locked and a young lady behind the bar on the phone completely ignoring us! According to your opening hours you were open at this time? Had said young lady either acknowledged us in some way when it was obvious we were wanting to eat it would have been much appreciated! Went somewhere else...you snooze, you loose!

Slightly overpriced wine but the momos are amazing, as is the tarka Dahl. Never eaten a bad meal there and their takeaway options are great too! Absolute gem! :)

Visited after few years and amazed by the new decor, in fact we were confused to identify too and had delicious meal. Mix seafood in medium spicy sauce was amazing, Himchuli Vegetable was flavoursome and long and soft pilau rice with spice aromas cooked to perfection accompanied the curry very well. Manager also visited our table and had words regarding food, service and view on new decor. Memorable visit will be back soon.

Went here tonight for the first time in over ten years with my wife and daughter. The restaurant has new owners now and had very recently been refurbished to a very high standard. (The Trip Advisor picture of the frontage is now out-of-date.) The service was excellent, attentive and friendly. The food was absolutely brilliant. Easily the best Nepalese food in Crystal Palace currently. We started with lamb momo, onion bhaji and garlic chilli mogo. The momo were divine. The bhaji's were clearly freshly made and easily the best that I have ever tasted. The mogo were quite firm to the bite but tasty and beautifully spiced. We then had an absolutely excellent chicken tikka masala and jhinga jaffrani (tandoori king prawns) accompanied by Bombay aloo, chana masala, garlic naan bread and rice. All were truly excellent. We finished with homemade gulab jamun and rasgulla. The wine list had five decent whites and we choose the New Zealand sauvignon blanc which was excellent and had four stars on Vivino. Overall, a lovely evening meal and we will definitely be back.

We had a great meal , vegetarian currys were fresh and tasty starters were served in a contemporary style. The surroundings were newly decorated and staff were very helpful, a good way to spend an early new year's eve meal.

Fabulous food. Do visit. Their vegetable Momo's are wonderful as a starter. Do also try their lamb staff curry which is melt in the mouth. Veggie side dishes are fab- light and not swimming in fat. Try the himchuli veg as an side, bhindi bhaji - wonderful flavour and service with a smile. I have never had a bad meal here. The staff are wonderful and the food is light, healthy and not sitting in ghee. Best nepalese in the area.

I usually avoid any Restaurant with a cottage in the name (they really need to change their name) but after a few years livings near this place I decided to Give it a try and wasn’t disappointed! Excellent food both eat in and takeaway! Bombay aloo particularly good! Best curry in CP for sure!

My husband and I ordered take-away from Gurkha Cottage for the second time during this holiday and were exceptionally pleased with the quality and taste of our food; fresh and delicious. Highly recommend.

Lovely clean restaurant with lots of atmosphere. The food is excellent, freshly prepared and very tasty. Shame we were only visiting, otherwise it would definitely be our local. The portions are good size, the service great and the staff very friendly.

We went with my family for dinner. Soon as we entered we were greeted and taken to the table which made us feel very welcomed. The staff were friendly and were able to suggest us the special dishes of the restaurant. The food were served quickly and they were fresh and very delicious. All our family members enjoyed our time here and looking forward to our next meal out here and highly recommend to everyone.

Had a lovely meal here on Xmas eve. It has become a family tradition to eat out the night before Christmas and this restaurant did not disappoint. We did not book early and were surprised we were able to get a table at such short notice.

Sin duda no es un buen restaurante con comida monótona. Menús de sucio. Es demasiado caro para lo que te dan. Queso naan plana, seca y no podía detectar cualquier queso, uno de los peores tipos de pan naan que he tenido.

I booked Gurkha Cottage on a recommendation from a local and although I'm no expert on Nepalese food, our meal appeared authentic with some delicious dishes I had never tried before. Service was friendly, accurate and and timely. We had a pleasant evening right up until I tried to pay the bill. Then we find that the credit card machine is not working. "Why" we ask, "didn't you mention that when we sat down to eat?" "There's a sign on the door". Well we didn't spot it and it appears neither did our fellow diners on the next table. Both of us had to trail off to the cash machine. This is simply wrong. In the 21st Century, if the credit card machine isn't working diners should be told before that order. How ever good the food I was left with a bad taste in my mouth and our evening was tainted. Will I go back? There's a heap of choice in the Crystal Palace area. Diners are spoiled for choice. In deciding where I eat next my last experience might just count against this restaurant.

Been to Gurkha cottage with my family, the food is excellent. Good customer service by the staff and pleasant environment. I recommend this place to everyone.

Food was very good - it just took an age to get to us.

The food is tasty with fresh ongredients used. Both vegetarian and chicken options were chosen and we were happy with both. The house white complimented the food well and overall the cost was reasonable.

I enjoyed my Nepalese curry at the this friendly local restaurant.I find the staff really friendly.The menu is quite interesting; especially good are the side dishes.The food is hot and tasty and good value.They also take the South London Club discount card.Recommended.

I enjoyed this restaurant, the atmosphere was good as was the food. I was pleased to see a vegetarian menu, which mainly could be converted to vegan. If I had any adverse comment it is that what I ordered and thought was a curry dish turned out to be a stir fry, which I ordered with vegan pilau rice? I am not sure how I could have known that I wasn't ordering a curry. I would like to try the restaurant again and would be more careful to order a curry, a vegan curry. That said what I had was lovely just not what I expected. Would be good if indian restaurants were able to provide vegan nan or vegan peshwari nan. I manage to substitute coconut milk instead of yoghurt when I cook at home.We had a lovely family meal curtesy of my eldest son.

Went here for a meal with my friends on my birthday.The guy on the phone when I booked asked what the occasion was. I told him birthday with that we have birthday napkins and little happy birthday sec-wines on the table. My self and all friends really enjoyed our food! Nice food but our delivery time got moved back 10 minutes later than we wanted, and then it didn't show up for a further 30 minutes after that. Not a very happy customer

Food was not good have had much better, real authentic Nepalese. Portions were way to small and expensive for what we recieved. The food arrived cold, nan bread was crispy and generally below par for a Monday night. Will never order again, I am extremley dissapointed.

Disappointed with the delivery time - 30 minutes after quoted time and we had to reheat the food. However the food was really tasty., so if you have time to wait then would highly recommend.

This has always been my favourite takeaway but I wonder if the chef or recipes have changed: the momos and baked samosas have gone from being the best I've ever had to a bit so-so. Please go back to the old recipe!

The food was ok. I wouldn't go there again as I reckon there are much better curries to be had in South London (like Lahore Kebab House, in Streatham, for example).

Very good as always, only suggestions are to consider getting an insulated bag to transport the food in (as is common elsewhere) as was not very hot this time. Also suggest you add a vegetarian option to all the classic/specials within the app - as is available if I call in the order, again this is common elsewhere.

Ordered food at 19.10 with confirmed delivery time of 19.50. It got to 20.10 called and it was in the restaurant waiting to be picked up and was told it would be 15 minutes. It gets to 20.30 and still no delivery, so call up again and are told its on its way...5 minutes. 10 minutes later still no delivery, I'm annoyed, it's almost an hour late and it's very likely to be cold. Poor delivery service!!!!!

My wife and I went into ghurkas cottage at about 7 pm.It was easy to find it was on church road in crystal palace.The staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was gorgeous.Our starters were piping hot and the mains were too.The only tiny fault was the price of the alcohol,but I have found that is common down in this area.

Great little Indian in Crystal Palace. Enjoyed going there. We booked last minute on open table and they did not notice that we had booked, but as we were in no rush there was no issues. The staff were lovely and willing to give us a table in the next 30 minutes. Food came out and was really good. Would love to go again. Recommend.

The Sherpa chicken and the green chicken were both just too spicy. Neither myself or my husband could eat them and we like hot food. It was just unbearable level of hotness. Some of the Poppadoms were stale. Disappointed as we have ordered before and enjoyed what we had.

Went here for a birthday meal and the food was really good, decent priced. Wasn't a long wait for food but a long wait for service, but we was a large group. Went here for a birthday meal and was so lovely!! Food was really good I had the tandoori chicken which was a huge portion and very yummy! I ordered this with rice which was a bit dry so next time I think order with sauce! Overall lovely night and when going home and had a problem with the cab they offered a cab number to us so kind!

Its been our few visit now with friends and family. The food and service at Gurkha Cottage never fail to impress.Its a must go Nepaese Restaurant in Crystal Palace for Nepalese food and its real flavour with indian touch.

That was some of the best food I've eaten in a long time. The staff were lovely, very helpful.The Kathmandhu beer was cold and refreshing. I had "off the menu" lamb dumplings which reminded me of my time in Nepal. The Green Chicken was so tasty - a terrific blend of coriander, chilli and garlic. The saffron rice was perfectly cooked.Cost was about £30/head.I'm looking forward to my next visit to Crystal Palace so I can go again.

Gurkha Cottage offers genuine and tasty Nepalese food at a reasonable price. Most importantly for us, they cater for vegetarians and vegans. Not only is the food plentiful and delicious, but the service is charming. I have been here three times and will definitely be returning!

Very nice food full of fresh flavours.

I usually love the food here, but this time it was extremely extremely oily. A layer of oil on the top and too oily to eat. I'm sure it was just a one off as the food is usually amazing!

Incredibly disappointed as I'd heard good things but the food was 40mins late and completely cold by the time it arrived, and I only live 1/2 mile away. I'm having to reheat in the oven as I speak. Won't be using again.

Second time ordering,and was awful compared to first,food all lukewarm,,starter was so small it was a ripoff,chips came in a plastic containers for the kids,,was so soggy from condensation,they got binned,really dissapointin.wont bother ordering again .

We were very pleased with our visit to the Gurkha Cottage. The menu had some familiar dishes but plenty of unusuals to try. We had the Lamb momos and Prawn puri followed by the staff curry and the five treasures chicken, with a keema nan and coconut rice. The food was excellent with good sized portions. The service was well timed. The staff were very friendly but not pushy. My only slight niggle is the 10% discretionary service charge added to the bill. But we will certainly return on our next visit to London

They can't sleep enough for you here. The food is delicious. Great choice of veggie food which is great for me. Their valentines night is super sweet and takeaway is always brilliant.

Visited here on 29/5/16, after a day in Crystal Palace.As previous visits, the food was very good & staff were very polite.The Staff Curry is good.Will return.

This restaurant ticked all the boxes. Very tasty food - a ton of choice for a vegetarian. The service was discreet and excellent and the restaurant was super clean. One point that is important to me is that the air filtering ststem is efficient as there is no over-powering food smell. (E.g. the smell of fish makes me heave so I'm very happy when you can't smell it). This restaurant is definitely a few steps up from the ubiquitous curry house.

This is our second visit to this little gem. Unfortunately we don't live in the area so have to travel a fair but to get here, but it's so worth it! We arrived on Saturday night at 8pm taking the risk of not booking in advance. Although still very busy we were warmly accomodated. The ambiance of this little restaurant is wonderful, the staff are very friendly and are happy to assist with all your requirements. The food it's cooked fresh to order and is so good! We try something different each time and can't fault anything so far. The curries are spiced and seasoned well, you can taste all of the individual flavours and are well presented. Compliments to the chef!! This is a great restaurant, and can't wait to visit again.

Bizarrely I grew up eating Nepalese food but not in Nepal. It was in a small seaside town on the South East Coast of Kent ! Our local Indian restaurant served the most excellent Nepalese cuisine (and still does to this day). So imagine the excitement at home, in Herne Hill, when we found the Gurkha Cottage a few miles away ! We were greeted by Deepak, the Manager. He was very attentive as were all the staff who are lovely. Starters came quite quickly and were excellent. A mix of paapri chaat , mixed grill and onion bhaji. All perfect and beautifully flavoured. Mains were the Sherpa Chicken (seriously hot so not for the faint-hearted) Kukhura Aloo with Chicken and a Prawn Korma (specially made for our youngest son). We also had Bombay Aloo and Mutter Paneer as well as some Naan. Extremely tasty food, very tender meat and superbly spiced. We were very full as the portions are enormous. In retrospect will skip the starters next time or order less ! The bill for the 3 of us came to £92 including service. But we had some alcoholic drinks and soft drinks too. A great evening out ! Certainly recommend. Coming back in a couple of weeks as part of a larger group of 16. And looking forward to it !

The two curries we orders were extremely sweet (which we didn't like) but the mushroom rice was nice and spicy and the onion kulcha was delicious.

Why, if I order a meal at 18:45 (whilst I was still en-route from Birmingham) to be delivered at home at 20:40 did I get an attempted delivery, text and phone call at 19:21 to tell my delivery was here. When it was delivered at 20:30 (thankfully I was home by then!) the food was luke warm (which I resolved with the use of the Microwave) - and I think I now understand why. As usual the food itself was of a good standard but please next time TAKE NOTE OF THE DELIVERY TIME!!

Having moved to the area relatively recently I'd heard a lot about Gurkha Cottage so wanted to try it out. My experience was a bit of a mixed bag. The restaurant itself is nice, good ambience. The food however was a little hit and miss. Service was pretty slow and it didn't even seem that busy. Unfortunately one of our starters was frozen in the middle still which wasn't great. The mains were better though and of a decent quality. The nan was good. Overall a very mediocre experience and with so many other curry houses near by I'm not sure I'd return.

Highly recommended... I thought yak and yeti was the best in Crystal Palace until I went to Gurkha Cottage. Our new favorite
