The food here is excellent. Great combination of Nepalese and Indian dishes. Very friendly service, although a little slow Restaurant can get over crowded which can be a tad uncomfortable. They need a bigger restaurant, so probably a victim of their own success!

Best curry house in Barnstaple. Enjoy.

Having recently moved to the area from the south east of England we were keen to find a good Indian/Nepalese restaurant. We had tried The Spice and The Sagor in Bideford (our closest town). The Spice was a complete disaster and The Sagor was just okay but nothing to write home about. So tonight as we were on Barnstaple we decided to try The Gurkha. The staff were welcoming and friendly, orders were not rushed but but taken promptly, drinks arrived quickly, and the food was delivered in good time. The food was lovely, unfortunately we decided to play it safe and ordered 'known' dishes so that we had a direct comparison and they all tasted as expected. So I said unfortunately at that's because I would have loved to have ordered some of the dishes on the menu which looked intriguing. If I have one negative comment I would say the meat to sauce ratio could be better but overall the taste was lovely and we will be back. I am aware that they are opening another branch in Bideford at the end of August '24 so if the food is as good there then that is set to become our new favourite Devon Nepalese restaurant.

My wife and I have been enjoying the Gurkha for many years, ever since it opened in fact. In that time the food, the welcome, everything you want from an evening out has been wonderful. On our latest visit we tried the LAMB SAGWALA which was really tasty with tender, melt in your mouth lamb. Thanks again Pradeep and staff for your service, see you all again soon.

I ordered a chicken biryani for takeaway. The price online is 8.95£ and they charged me 10.95£ when i was saying that i ordered the biryani because its of the online price and they started arguing with me. That’s so rude.. didn’t liked the food as well!

We just had the most delicious meal at The Gurkha, made all the better by the wonderful, friendly service. I can highly recommend the Tandoori King Prawns which came out on a sizzling hot skillet and tasted gorgeous. We had roti and daal to accompany, and some poppadoms with chutneys. Everything was beautifully fresh, and served with a smile. Thank you so much, we’ll see you again soon.

Had a takeaway from here… chicken tikka masala, it looked and tasted like chewy chunks of chicken (clearly microwaved) in tasteless tomato soup … honestly … I was flabbergasted. I honestly would rather starve if this was the last place on earth

Came here for a different style of cuisine and having had Nepalese food a few years ago I wanted to try a different dish again. I ordered the Base Camp Curry from the waiters recommendation as I wanted a traditional dish with some spice. Ordered this alongside a Gurkha Naan (Garlic Naan with fresh Chillies). Other dishes that were ordered was Tori Macha and Shahi Paneer. All the dishes were really good, unique, flavorful and tasty. The Base Camp Curry was exactly what I wanted, not over spicy where I rushed or fought through my dish, but enough heat for me to enjoy a dish with a kick. The waiter was really friendly, approachable and knowledgeable in each dish which helped in making decisions in what to eat. The location, although on a side street makes it more interesting as to what's the restaurant going to offer. From my experience I would say definitely give it a go, you won't go wrong Dropped a star on the atmosphere as we weren't there whilst it was busy so couldn't give a full 5, but with the background music and service from the staff no complaints here 👌🏽

It might not look nice from the outside, but as they say don't judge the book by it's cover. It looks cozy inside and comfy. The staffs are really nice and hospitable. 5 thumbs up to the men who serves the food. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Overall experience was one star because i have woken up the next morning, regretting my experience here. The starter was enjoyable but the main was rubbish. I ordered what was advertised as a spicy garlic lamb dish but what I got was what tasted like tinned tomatoes with very little flavour with a few pieces of lamb... Very disappointed with the lack of flavour. The waiting staff were very pleasant but the gentleman server was a hustler... After we made our orders, he continued to suggest more and more food to the person who I was with, gullible, she fell into his trap... Unfortunately , I was the person who was paying🙄 It was the way he targeted her, and turned his back to me while he did this. I wasn't impressed. The atmosphere was ok but the décor needed updating 20 years ago... Floral carpet isn't a thing anymore... The bill was just over £70 for two people, not worth it....

We had a big family take away from here and the food was amazing, will definitely be back.

What A Spot... Best Curry Around Here For Miles !!!

Visited this lovely restaurant for the first time last week. The welcome from the staff was amazing so friendly and warm. Our meals were gorgeous, I had Tandoori,my husband had a fish curry and we had rice and peshwari naan. Food and service could not be bettered. Highly recommended.

One of the best curry houses I've been to. Even on a Sunday night food and service was second to none. I would recommend their Base Camp and Everest dishes. Prices are extremely reasonable and everything was just great value.

The food is full of flavour, the nan is probably the best I have had, the chicken chat puri was 10/10 and I now wish I lived closer so I could have it all the time! (Visiting family) the atmosphere and surroundings reminds me classic London brick lane curry house, comfort and friendly. The staff are fab too!

We've been to the Gurkha many times and it remains top of our list for any events and social gatherings amongst our group of friends. The staff are extremely friendly and kind, and made my 32nd birthday meal special. It's a small place but that adds to the character. You can still easily meet there with a large group if you book ahead. The food is always excellent and very flavourful. I highly recommend the Base Camp Curry if you like it a little hotter. Couldn't finish mine last night and had to take the rest home, couldn't bare to waste it! Will absolutely visit here again.

Oh what can I say! Our second visit and the standard of service and food as good as the first visit. Such a lovely team of smiley, genteel Nepalese and the chef is second to non. Friendly staff ,very good take away

Just had the base camp curry, two tandoori chickens, saag aloo and Tara dahl - absolutely lovely - even included some free poppadoms (and a sneaky beer as it was a bit late) - will definitely come back when we down visiting again - thank you 👏👏👏👏

We ordered a takeaway from here. The service was very friendly and efficient. However, the food was only just average. Both curries were quite bland, they were also meant to be spicy however there was no spice at all. Very overpriced for the quality of food.

Food is always great, staff are friendly and knowledgeable, they take dietary requirements seriously. Booking is advisable as they are always busy even on a random Tuesday night!

What an unexpected treat! As the cynical Londoners we are, we arrived to the restaurant extremely skeptical, but oh gosh how we changed our mind. The food is truly excellent, such a wide variety of Nepalese and Indian dishes all cooked to perfection. SO tasty! And the service is equally good. Cherry on the cake, it's also very reasonably priced. I don't often leave reviews, but to any other skeptical tourists around, I can't recommend it enough ;)

Wow food is just amazing. Really enjoyed the base camp curry.

Absolutely fantastic experience as always. Staff always go above and beyond and make you feel very welcome. Facilities always clean and the restaurant is always nicely lit and welcoming. The portion sizes are perfect, not too big and not too small. Food is always piping hot and tasty. Their Naan bread is the best I've ever had, but the main dishes are also phenomenal. Great curry house, used frequently, great hosts and great curry!

We were on the way back from a day trip to Lundy and after a few days of good pub meals fancied something spicier. We like our curries, especially Nepalese. We didn't have high hopes of a curry in Barnstaple but how wrong we were. Food excellent. Spiced really well, with each dish having it's own character and flavour. Highly recommend.

One of those tucked away places that you wish you knew about earlier. The menu is kind of Indian cuisine with added specialties, which means that there will be something for everyone (if they like Indian type food). The food was well cooked and good portions. The Nepalese style beer I had was very pleasant and accompanied the meal well. I will happily return.

Absolutely fantastic. Found it by chance and thank god we did. Food was brilliant. Service amazing. If your in the area eat here..... you won't be disappointed. . Only downside its hidden down side street and doesn't look the best but looks are deceiving. Inside clean tidy and greeting.

Had a great evening here, the Gurkha is an unfussy restaurant with some of the best tasting food you could wish for, the friendly staff give you plenty of time to choose your dishes and then leave you to enjoy your meal whilst always being on hand for your drinks orders. This was my first time at the Gurkha, I'm looking forward to many tasty returns, thankyou guys 👍.
