Grumpy's in Southend-on-Sea

My regular breakfast, lunch, or sometimes dinner joint. Staff are always so friendly and helpful and chatty. Atmosphere is nice and light with a 50s diner vibe. Food is always so good from burgers and hotdogs to full breakfasts and ribs. We've had most choices on the menu. Milkshakes are excellent and there's a handful of beer choices. Staff that stand out with great service are Indie, Kerry, the chef, and Emily.

Nice place to eat the food was lovely I'm not a big burger fan but the ones in here were really nice and nothing was too much trouble for the girls serving us will definitely go again!

First time here. Staff great. Food great. Had same 4 breakfast items at another establishment not far from here last week, and that place food quality not a patch on Grumpys. Interesting internal USA theme decor. Will be back.

It's a quirky American style diner that's just so out of place it's brilliant! Food is good and reasonably priced and staff are friendly and polite. Worth a visit just for experience - I'll be going again, I'm sure

Went tonight for my daughter's 11th birthday. Very welcoming and couldn't do enough for you. Food was good and the girls loved the shakes. Great value as well See you soon Grumpys!!

I really want to like Grumpy's. I really want it to be good. But it just isn't. After giving it one too many chances, (I've been with my family 3 times over the past 4 years) I will not be returning. The bottom line is, the food is simply crap. It tastes cheap. It tastes loveless. It's horrifically overpriced. We really felt aggrieved at the £70 bill for 2 adults, 2 little kids, with no desserts. The final insult (and this could go a LONG way to resolve some of the flavour issues) is the use of the cheapest, nastiest condiments. You leave feeling queasy and mugged off. We will not be returning. Another woeful example of an inadequate and rip-off eatery in Southend.

Me and my gf dicided to show up before closing and thought we would be turned down but was met with a smile and a warm welcome at are suprise! Staff were so lovey and we were served by Emily. The place its self was really interesting with loads of classic picture and props topped up with classic music and classic movies playing. Food came up really fast as was Lovley overall was really really impressed with the food the place and how kind and quick the staff was couldn’t recommend more.

Lovely diner! Loved the vibe inside with the decoration and music :). Great range on the menu and very American! We were served by Verry & Emily who were both attentive and nice ladies. Liked they had lots of veggie/vegan options.. great vegan Oreo milkshake! My husband said his burger was one of the best he’d ever had! ;)

Went here for my partners Birthday with our two young kids (2 years old and 10 months old) really nice atmosphere and great food. Excellent family run restaurant.

We came first time to check out this lovely American Diner, At the door a lovely young lady Chloe greeted us with a friendly smile, Chloe and Emily thank you for professional but friendly customer service. The food was delicious we ordered Home made Beef Burger. We definitely will come back and try the breakfast as well.

Build your own burger..asked for NO red onion…granddaughter has a reaction to them ( not serious but unpleasant) burger came with red onions..was sent back to be corrected and returned WITH red onions. As the waitress was busy & so pleasant we just removed them and she ate what she could of the burger…ruined what could have been a very nice meal…

Service by Jasmine & Mia was excellent, Mocktails Milkshakes and Desserts are amazing! Just one suggestion maybe some themed background music go well with the atmosphere and setting!

If your looking for a proper American then this isn’t the place. Told the waitress I didn’t like the burger and she became very hostile and charged me full price for a meal I didn’t eat.

Food was good. Reasonably priced. Slight disappointment in desert sizes. Portions were smaller on second visit. Small neapolitan ice cream had no chocolate scoop.

Great atmosphere and decent food

Really good shakes and food, nice environment. The menu has the selection you’d expect from an American diner, I had the ribs and the portion was more than big enough, you won’t leave hungry. I would go again.

Went for a meal for mine and my girlfriends birthday. Staff were very friendly and happy to help. They were very accomodating to my girlfriend who is lactose intolerant and my nephew who has multiple allergens. Fantastic quality food and a great atmosphere all round the resturant.

Went here with my partner and his family for our birthdays, was outstanding! I have lactose intolerance and my nephew has multiple allergens and the catered for both of us very well. They have a massive allergen and Vegan menu. The waitress’ serving our party went to the kitchen and checked what meals were suitable for our nephew and had everything double checked on food packaging. Couldn’t recommend enough! The food selection was amazing and there was lots to chose from. Would definitely go back again!

My son and I visit here often as a treat for being good. We visited last night after a day out. Staff as always are very kind and friendly. Kerry & Mia attended to us last night. Food is always cooked fresh and served hot , and very tasty. I always go for the grilled chicken, I should try other dishes from the menu because when I see other food being served it always looks so good! Thank you again for a lovely meal. We love Grumpys Diner. Friendly staff. Amazing food. It's a little overpriced, in my opinion, but the food, service and general ambience make up for it.

This diner was advertised on a map at the hotel we were staying at so my husband and I decided to visit there for dinner with our 4 year old granddaughter. We were quickly given a choice of booths and served promptly by Jasmine and Emily. They were both patient with our granddaughter who enjoyed colouring in her picture and choosing where to place it on the wall. She enjoyed her meal as did I - hubby less so. I would recommend this diner for those looking for a varied menu and friendly service.

Two of us ate and had breakfast, and both of us had the works. The works was a good-sized breakfast, which was cooked well and presented nicely. We had coffee with it, which was nice and hot and had a good taste. The service was quick and polite and the 50's American theme in the resteraunt was really well done. It certianly somewhere I would consider going back to dinner. The only slight disappointment was a gentleman (who appeared to be known to the owners) who felt it necesssey to have a loud conversation on his mobile phone, on loudspeaker, and no one from the staff seemed to find that at all strange or suggest to him that perhaps it was better done outside for the benefit of those dining inside, who didn't want to hear both parts of his loud conversation. If I had any feedback to the owners on how to get 5 stars, it would be that it would benefit them to ask people, in such circumstances, to take phone calls outside, as to not disturb other diners inside who were trying to enjoy their food.

As a regular customer who turns up with various women (they never judge me tho) the staff are always so patient and helpful. This time I was served by Kerry and jasmine who do a great job. Also the chef did a top job of our food. I had a burger as usual with the pulled pork and we ordered the new York chicken burger which we demolished. So glad they serve cream soda. A strawberry milkshake was added. All were great as usual. 👍

We love Grumpy's. Food delicious as always. The service from Jasmine and Emily was excellent. Lots of choice fir each of us. The Mac n Cheese was particularly enjoyed by my granddaughter. Thanks to Lloyd, the chef. Looking forward to our next visit.

Loving the new menu, found myself drooling at the thought of their American Works breakfast when I woke up Saturday morning and had to wait till my husband woke up from his lie in to have brunch there. My husband had his usual Mini Works Breakfast and the American works breakfast fully satisfied my craving. We both love the fun atmosphere, great food and friendly service and it's our go to place if we don't feel like cooking at home. Recommend the breakfasts, steaks, ribs and burgers as well as the milkshakes and sundaes if you have room! Treated an American friend to breakfast here and she loved her breakfast so much she took a doggy bag of pancakes home with her!

Use to eat here a lot. This was our first time back since the Pandemic. Very disappointed not the place it use to be. Service poor food not great lot of money for what it was. Staff rather clean up ready to close then look after customers. Doubt if we will return.

If you want nice food, friendly staff and a rock 'n' roll atmosphere go to Grumpys Diner. Booked a group of 20 for breakfast and all the pre ordered food came together, was piping hot and nothing was too much trouble. We'll done to Kerry and Chantelle. We will be returning.

Back again for another scummy, late breakfast at this excellent American themed Diner. From the moment we arrived, until a friendly farewell, Maya, Lily and Jasmine made it a brunch to remember... for all the right reasons. Oh, and the food was superb too. I'm shortly going to be leading a fabulous 50s themed wedding held at Grumpy's Diner. It's the perfect venue for it, and Kerry has been so great to work it through with! Can't wait to get back there for the big day.

Grumpys. Says it all. Rude staff. Dreadful service. The worst food I have experienced in years. How this place stays open is beyond me. I'd give it no stars if I could.

Did not know this diner existed. Loved the themed decor and thoroughly enjoyed my first visit. Staff attentive but not intrusive and food plentiful. Have no doubt will visit again

as a celiac its so so nice to see a menu with the GF symbol next to each dish . my only issue is that I could only have a couple of items on the menu. the staff were very polite and professional. so if you come here please leave a tip . this place is well worth a visit..

We had our child's 6th birthday party, the staff at the diner catered for 30 children and 15 adults, environment and food was great. Staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. Birthday cake they provided was amazing! We cannot thank everyone enough. Would 100% recommend.

We visited here as I'm gluten free and my partner is lactose intolerant, and their menu seemed super allergen friendly so we thought we'd be in safe hands. I want to start by saying that the food was great. Really tasty and much cheaper than we expected for the amount of food you get. Unfortunately I can't say I felt as safe with my intolerance as I'd hoped I would. When asking if certain things contained gluten or wheat it seemed as though our server had no idea what gluten was- every question I asked seemed to baffle her! This really damaged my trust in the place as I had no idea if what I was ordering would actually be safe. Thankfully she asked the chef who seemed to actually know what was in the food. If you're going to deal with allergens/ intolerances I think it's so important that the staff know how to deal with these things, or at the very least know what they actually are!

Yeah it was a good place ive been there 4 times and been satisfied everytime. I can also imagine it being a great place for family's and dating couples too. I go with friends for lunch now and then their very friendly despite the name lol. Yeah its its a pretty great place tbf. They also do a good Full English 😋👌

It is a nice place 1960 but I only went in for a cup o coffee. Thinking about going in there for a meal. It was quite as it was 11.30am.

Food was slow to arrive considering that place and nearly empty. While was waited it was easy to see that the place needed and detail clean or less ornaments for them to clean. During were stock, mostly bottled. Bottled cola with straw, no offer of a glass. Once food arrived, it was reasonable well presented. It seemed and lots of it bought in, but the items that should be fresh looked like they were. The food was ok; that it thought just ok. I could have bought ready meals and ovened them for the same result. All in all it was cheap, look nothing like any American dinner I’ve ever been in (unless you stole all the cliches from films and TV shows), strangely offering English breakfasts (American cooked are way different); the food hot and edible. Would I revisit? Yes, but mostly for either convenience or no other choice.

Needed food so stopped by. Decided on Monroe omelette. Was okay but not anything that I couldn't manage myself at home and was over priced. Waitress was friendly and attentive but did tend to finish each sentence with "All all"!!!

A trendy diner fashioned after American diners with food named and decor to match. Can get crowded with families with children. Food prices are reasonable but the quality of the food is comparable with economy dinners

Went to the Grumpy's for a late breakfast with my gf. My gf really liked the design of the place. It was a 1950s American-style burger place (although neither of us got burger in the morning). We ordered a steak & eggs, and a savoury waffle. We wanted our sirloin steak medium but turned out well done (still not bad tho). The waffles were fair. Ice americano wasn't on their menu but they still tried to make one for my gf (a plus). We also tried Irish coffee for the first time there (taste pretty good). Another story about the Grumpy's and the Adventure Island. We were going to the Adventure Island after the meal and we supposed to buy the one day pass over there. But we saw that the Grumpy's actually sold discounted day pass for the Island (standard £28 vs Grumpy's price £18)!!! Turned out we bought the tickets in the Grumpy's and have saved a lot of money! Please be noted that they only accept cash payment for the day pass. We were told the money is to be donated to charity.

Glad we found this diner. A great American theme, menu choice is great, and the food was delicious. We took my son for his 5th birthday, and the staff were amazing and helped make it a great evening for him. Personal touches like birthday table decorations, and adding a sparkler to his birthday cake for us. We will definitely be back, thank you!

Was looking for somewhere to have breakfast on the esplanade and everywhere was full, so ended up doing a quick search on Google and came across this place, a few streets back from the seafront. I'm glad I did, its a cool American themed diner and has a great selection of food, even has fancy milkshakes too! Good food, good prices and good staff. Definitely will be going to back!

Another 1st class visit on Saturday morning for breakfast. Great value, big portions and really well cooked . Great staff too.

Food was very basic routee 66 meal the burgers were over seasoned, and chips were cooked and then warmed up again only thing i enjoyed was the 1 onion ring that came with the meal walked out paying £75 for 2 adults and a young child very disappointed as had been here few times before and enjoyed last times

Tasty food with fast and friendly service from Chantelle and Ellie. Would also recommend the cocktails and mocktails, much more flavoursome than many other places!

Love the interior design and the food is delicious 😋 definitely have to get a milkshake!
