It was a last minute decision to book Gilbert's on a Sunday morning but they had availability and I had not been for a very long time and their Sunday lunch deal of £29.95 for 2 or £36.95 for 3 courses was back so why not ! The hotel is located down a long leafy drive but there is plenty of car spaces so it should not be an issue parking. Gilbert's itself is located as you enter the main building on the ground floor with views over the garden so it's quite restful , the room not so much as it's very dated and old fashioned but to some people's taste I guess. There is a choice of 5 starters and main courses so something for everyone. Glad that a free bread roll and butter is offered with the menu. The crispy duck salad with bean shoots and watercress was tasty but served in an odd bowl rather than on a plate making it hard to eat. The tempura prawns came with a sweet chilli dipping sauce and garnished with tomato and cucumber and nice enough, the batter was crispy and light. Main course of roast beef was delicious, plenty of meat , the roasties were crisp but only warm, also served with carrot , asparagus and a bowl of cauliflower cheese which was slight pureed but tasted good and nice & cheesy. The Yorkshire could have been warmer too . Wine started from £21 , tap water was available on request, total came to £83.90 plus 10% service bringing it to £92.29 altogether for 2. Service was a little hit and miss , water had to be asked for twice, the server was not able to uncork the wine at the table and had to go to the bar to do it only to return without any wine glasses. However, plates were cleared promptly and the staff seemed jolly.

Lovely Hotel with an interesting history and characterful restaurant. This time we were seated in the old dining room as the main eating area was being done up but nevertheless it did not detract from the eating experience. Our meals were excellent and freshly prepared for us, my beer battered fish and chips was enormous, so much so I could not eat it all- shame. 10% added as service charge which is common place these days. Recommended.

Brought wrong orders, members of the table were brought their food after everyone had finished. Sides weren’t brought out with mains. The food was extremely poor and would never go back nor recommend to anyone. The food that was brought out was vile and the service was awful too.

Very quiet place. The whole restaurant was empty besides two of us Service was impeccable from a young waitress who was polite with good customer service. However they need to have more vegetarian options for starters and mains. I had halloumi baguette with couple of roasted veg in it. Halloumi tasted very dry and chewy. Shame on selection and quality of food. Rolls were warm from outside but cold inside. Probably microwaved. Place and service is nice, if only they improved the quality of vegetarian food.

I have visited many times. My sister got married here; I once held my baptism lunch here and I've walked around the beautiful gardens on many occasions. It was partly because I was feeling a bit nostalgic that I thought I would recreate a visit I had when the kids were just 5, 8 and 10. It was a summer day and we enjoyed a beautiful afternoon tea in the garden. My recent experience couldn't have been more different or more disappointing. Firstly the booking was by phone and I was asked to leave a £10 deposit per person, which I found a bit odd - surely a booking is enough without taking a deposit? On arrival, a friendly waitress quickly took me to an available table, offering a choice of two areas - all good. The interior looked the same as I remembered, the only change as far as I could see was management, as the hotel is now run by Best Western. The service was stilted, but this is because there were only two people serving, one of which seemed a little inexperienced. I had planned to enjoy an afternoon tea for 3 but on arrival decided to choose the fixed price menu (2 or 3 courses for approx £30+). I also chose one full afternoon tea (£32). The fixed price menu was ok, huge portions so relatively good value. However, this restaurant is far more expensive than it was previously. There are lots of signs that the owners are trying to cut costs wherever possible. 1. very inexperienced staff 2. no tableclothes on the tables 3. use of paper doilies on serving plates 4. photocopied menus (stapled) rather than a proper menu All of the above however, could be ignored/forgiven if the food is tip-top and in line with the price. This is my main criticism. The food, on the whole, was average. the breads served cold, the main courses were ok, but felt more like pub grub than a quality dining experience. The dessert was ok. On the plus side, the portions were huge for the main course and dessert, but I would argue they were far too big. My main criticism is reserved for afternoon tea. It was woeful! 3 slivers of sandwich, 3 tiny desserts, a savoury thing that I scarcely know how to describe - it had aubergine and courgette on it and was salty! the scones (1 plain and one with fruit) were ok. I did however feel that the price did not justify the size. I was offered no choice of teas (english breakfast) and again it felt like the restaurant was more interested in maximising the profit margin than offering a reasonable product for the guest. Note that previous reviews on the afternoon tea are for a different menu. When I looked at the photos prior to my booking, what I received in no way resembled what others got more than a year ago... When my bill arrived they had added on 10% service without my approval. I did query whether I had been served the half tea rather than the full and the duty manager (Richard) was called to discuss this with me. Unfortunately he was very rude and turned bright red when explaining with some force that the menu stated what was included and that was what I got. No he said that was not the half tea. He said that they changed the afternoon tea menu a year ago. He brought the menu and asked me to read it, however, the menu doesn't tell you that the cakes are about as big as a thumbnail and that the sandwiches so small they equate to 1 slice to bread. They served a macaron that when I offered to share it with my daughter, was too small to cut in half so I got the lid and she got the bottom! It was laughable. So I agree with what other reviewers have written. It's true, this lovely little local gem has gone downhill. I think offering such a mean portion will lose them customers but that's what happens when you put profit before customers. + Beautiful grounds Stunning house Calm atmosphere Interesting local heritage (Gilbert and Sullivan) Fixed lunch is ok, but not great - Food average at best Poor customer service - duty manager was rude Overpriced menu Afternoon tea was very poor - many better choices available Service - amateur. I had to ask the waiter to clean the table and he then swept the food onto the floor and left it there! Yes another peel of laughter from my children, they couldn't believe it! What with that and spraying presumably cleaning fluid on the table , wiping around the plates and leaving them in situ - presumably so that we could eat from plates infused with cleaning liquid - was pythony'esque. As long as you aren't expecting anything great from the food a trip to Grims Dyke is still worth it. I would focus on drinks and a walk around the garden. If you're up for a laugh then go full Fawlty Towers and sit back and enjoy... I did call to make a complaint but no one got back to me. Says it all really

This is the first time I’ve been back here since the pandemic and boy, has it changed. I used to use this place to meet up with a couple of work colleagues; we’d do work with a laptop (using their wifi) in one of the spare rooms like the morning room followed by one of their prix fixe menus which offered good value for money. However, since the pandemic, they now take a deposit of £10 per head. I don’t like this, but I also didn’t get this refunded even though I gave them a three week notice of cancellation. Instead they say the deposit goes towards your next visit which for me, wasn’t until three months later. Another new charge was the use of the morning room - now £50 an hour! - instead we hovered in the hall trying to do some work on a laptop before lunch. The lunch wasn’t good either. Portions too big and didn’t taste great. All four of us left food on our plates from our main course. The fish and chips were nuclear hot and one of our party had a very uncomfortable time as burning hot food went down his throat. Both people who had the fish and chips didn’t like the batter of the fish and then waiting for the food to cool, found it went cold very quickly after. I had the prawn starter but didn’t enjoy the taste of the sauce and it was too big a portion size. Served in a bowl, it was impossible to use a knife and fork to cut up the food. When I mentioned this to the waitress she said it was because of the presentation and hard to make a pile of prawns and gnocchi look good on a plate. I had the burger which was far too thick and not seasoned well, so I left some of that. The burger was not in a brioche bun which they put in the menu. The desserts were nice though. Food needs to be less portion wise and more fine dining rather than country pub fare. You are have a great setting with a wonderful history. Make the food match the surroundings.

I placed an order with the manager and received a different order that was £4 more. The manager was rude and defensive and didn't want to change my order. After arguing the case, he gave me what I had originally asked for and still wanted to overcharge me. I again had to complain and was finally refunded without an apology. I later heard him apologising to another table for taking the wrong order. I didn't appreciate being spoken to like a 2yr old. Terrible service and basic food.

My husband suprised me with a return visit to the beautiful Grims Dyke hotel building 28 years after we spent our wedding night here. The Gilbert Restaurant is situated in the main manor house and is in keeping with this fine building. Yes, perhaps some of the decor is a little worn in places but the ambience and grandness of the room more than compensates. What is most notable is the excellent, friendly service from all staff. Our coats were taken without fuss and we were shown to our table. Excellent service from beginning to end. Food was excellent and beautifully presented. I liked that produce is locally sourced and we were told at the beginning which items were no longer available. The wild mushroom pie was excellent! Drinks were very reasonably priced. We were delighted by the added touch of a personalied pudding wishing us a happy anniversary- very thoughtful. One thing we noticed was the fixed service charge was only 10% which we felt was excellent value for the lovely service we recieved. We've been to many places where service is 15 or even 17.5% and the staff are not half as professional. I guess the management leave it to, the discretion of their customers to reward service beyond the set amount if they feel it is warranted- which it certainly was in our case. We will be back and wont leave it 28 years this time. Thank you.

Starting with the positives New menu etc and new chef I think The starters and main course were delicious no complaints the deserts were ok a bit limited but preferred the old style ones which were wonderful these were a bit big messy and dry. New this visit no offer to take our coats had to ask and also no offering of bread had to ask love the brown fruit bread which I got. But got the impression this is now not the norm. We were fine with the price no problem. Entertainment was a nice thought but a bit old fashioned and the gentlemen could have dressed up a bit being valentines music was fine. We used to get a gift on valentines evening a decent box of chocs but this time was a very small love hearts pack os sweets. A bit immature. As we visit about 4 to 6 times a year we do notice the changes. A nice touch however at being recognised in the bar area.

Booked last minute for afternoon tea with my mum and sister in law. Parked up and was impressed by the gardens and building. Went inside the Gilbert restaurant and was not greeted at all by staff so just made our way to a free table. We were asked if we wanted tea or coffee which came quick, no choice of tea. I asked to replace the egg mayo with humous and roasted veg sandwich which was not a problem. The afternoon tea arrived. Only 3 finger sandwiches each and if you want more you have to pay! My mums cucumber and cream cheese sandwich was really old, Mum said it tasted sour and I opened it up and the cucumber was soggy and looked like it was days old. My mum didn’t notice and I didn’t mention anything to her as this would have put her off the whole tea. Then the scones, 1 fruit 1 plain which was cold, hard and crusty not good. We had to ask for more coffee and tea and had to ask a second time for more tea. The cakes were an eclair, an apple strudel and a strawberry cake which was ok.

The Grims Dyke Hotel . Harrow . Fabulous old mansion once owned by Gilbert and Sullivan. Great setting in 100 acres of woodlands. No elevators to get your bags to your room so you have to get staff to take them and back when you check in or out. We had a fabulous full cream scones and jam English afternoon tea. Worth the money. We also had a good meal in the restaurant at night. We were disappointed however that although we had paid for a full English breakfast or buffet(all good) we were charged 2 pounds extra for oatmeal and another 2 pounds for a latte ??!! The final service killer was that they didn't have a corkscrew in the rooms but wanted to charge us nearly 20 pounds corkage to open our own special bottle of wine we got as a gift from Italy ,,even though we only wanted to drink it on our own room balcony! (On principle, We drove out and bought our own opener down the road for 1 pound!?) Who decided those extra service charges? Yes,, it's actually called "customer service" in North America. Otherwise it was good there but now 7 out of 10.

My family and friends stayed at the Grim's Dyke last week for a big family event taking place locally. On one morning I joined them for breakfast. The dining room is lovely and we were given a nice table towards the back. The meal and service were disappointing though. We were asked twice if we were ready to order, before we had even received a menu. The cold buffet was half empty as we entered towards the latter part of the breakfast period and messy-looking. I nearly tripped over a waste paper type bin that had been placed badly in the front centre of the buffet table, presumably for buffet rubbish. When I ordered porridge, I was offered it as plain, sweet or savoury with no explanation of what that meant. My sweet server didn't know either and had to go check what that meant. Apparently it's with sugar, salt or nothing. They would do better to offer sliced or dried fruit or nuts. Anyway, the food tasted very nice, including the porridge, mini croissants and coffee. My problem was with the service; my family being told they had better hurry up as the buffet was being cleared, the difficulty in ordering from staff and finally, being asked by the restaurant manager to move from our breakfast table to the bar inside the main hotel building so that the staff could set the tables for lunch. There were only 4 of us and they could easily work around us. It so happens that weren't just lingering. We were discussing serious family business and the empty dining room was a good location. When we did move to the library we were subject to a large, noisy group of 20 or more people congregating together, which then made our quiet, personal conversation difficult to carry on. The Grim's Dyke has a lovely building and grounds but it's gone downhill in many ways in the 20 years I've been visiting it. The upholstery in bar and sitting room looks dirty, the common areas don't feel fresh and well-maintained, and the restaurant manager is far more concerned with keeping to his schedule than in being hospitable.

Stayed here five times now, as family live in Bushey. The hotel façade is lovely, bursting with period features, great for a wedding, etc. However, the bedrooms, the restaurant, the bar, and all communal areas need a facelift. Some of the bedrooms in the annexe are positively grim, more like cells. The beds, bedding and pillows are the high points of the bedrooms, the dirty carpets, stained walls and tired bathrooms are the low points. The bar area is really, really appalling, it is so drab, depressing and poorly decorated. Some of the windows are cracked and broken, and in the winter months, it is so cold and uninviting in there. The gardens are a real treat, as is the outdoor seating area. Some of the staff are as tired as the place, the reception staff seem disinterested in ensuring their guests satisfaction, and have NEVER asked me if I enjoyed our stay. Most of the staff throughout the hotel desperately need customer service training.

We live in Harrow, and often go to the Grim's Dyke for a meal. I love the house, and the food is generally excellent. But we were a little disappointed last night. It was a Saturday, and busy, with a function on upstairs as well. One of the starters was bruschetta - which is OK, but unusual in a fine dining restaurant. I had sea bass and risotto for main, but the risotto was dry, and there was no sauce, so rather bland. My partner had confit duck in pastry - he's a good eater, but the portion size was massive, and presentation was family restaurant, not fine dining. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't that good, and the portions were too big. The staff as always were lovely, although they really need to sort out the bar service!Maybe it was just a bad night because they were very busy, or maybe it's time for us to find a new favourite.

The head waiter knew nothing of the offer on the website and so we paid the higher sum. Although the food was lovely and I would go again, I feel cheated at having booked at one cost and charged another. I know it is only an extra £1 but that is not the point. Why put an offer on your website and not inform the waiting staff?

My roast beef main meal was also terrible - the roast potatoes tasted like they had been re- fried from 2 days ago, the vegetables were blackened, the cauliflower cheese was powdery, the 1 slice of roast beef was full of gristle and inedible and I asked for gravy 3 times throughout my meal and it arrived after I'd given up trying to eat my meal. The desert was also poor - 2 pieces of filo pastry with some cream in the middle together with a few sour strawberries- please do not come here. It is a waste of time and money and the service is hurried but poor.

The quality and choice of food was fantastic. We had three evening meals, two lunches and three breakfasts. All the food was beautifully presented and the waiters were helpful and efficient. The prices were very, very reasonable for the quality - especially on Saturday evening when the restaurant had candles/candelabra at each table and extra courses (amuse bouches and the most wonderful pear sorbet) in addition to the mains.

Before our meal we decided to enter the Library for some G&T's. We were served by the bar manager who had a fantastic knowledge of his spirit selection. He immediately made us feel welcome and at ease. After our drinks we made our way through to the main restaurant where we were greeted with another round of great hospitality. A beautiful table for two overlooking the garden was awaiting us. The menu had a beautiful selection of fresh meets and fish. Drinks were bought over promptly and a food order was taken within good time. We had asked the sommelier to recommend a wine for each of our courses. It was yet again evident to see that there was a clear passion and knowledge for wine pairing. Every course was accompanied by a carefully selected wine from the cellar. We were also bought out a special course of the chefs selection for us to try. This was also accompanied by a complimentary wine. From start to finish the whole dining experience was one of the finest standard. Fellow guests were clearly enjoying themselves to great extent too. I would definitely recommend that you try out this restaurant with its friendly and knowledgeable staff, great food and picturesque setting.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here, I felt it was clean, tidy, even though I was only there for two days,I had an executive room well laid out well stocked, I met various staff, I felt even when busy, they made such a great effort to solve any of my problems, the rooms were often quiet even when busy, most of the patrons were mature and sensible, made for relaxed evening with a nice glass of wine, showers and bath was clean and rooms were constantly warm, I would readily use this hotel again when I am in town.... look out for there lovely wine selection, worth a look.

I treated my mum to Sunday lunch here as part of her Christmas present. This was our third visit and, as on the previous occasions, we had a lovely time.Perhaps best known for being the former home of librettist W S Gilbert, Grim's Dyke is now a hotel and restaurant, and as you wind your way through the tree-lined driveway you feel you're going somewhere special. The first view of the Victorian manor house, surrounded by ornamental gardens and woodland, doesn't disappoint. The interior is decorated in-keeping with the period of the house, with the original wood panelling, decorative tiles and stone archways restored to how they were in Gilbert's day. There's also an intricately carved fireplace in an alcove. Look out for the cheeky monkey stealing an apple.Despite the location, the restaurant is surprisingly good value with a three course meal costing £26.50. A glass of wine and tea/coffee and petit fours will increase the price to around £36.00 per head plus tip. The menu offers a wide selection of dishes, and the portions are very generous, and beautifully served. I had wild mushrooms and rocket in a white wine sauce on homemade bread, sea bass on creamy mash with spinach, baby carrots and a leek and paprika sauce followed by lemon tart with clementines. It was delicious.I'd recommend this as a place to come for a special occasion, as the setting is stunning, and the staff when we were there couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. They also offer afternoon cream teas. And you can always walk off those extra calories in the surrounding gardens and woodland.

Us three ladies planned a lovely walk this morning through the adjoining woods and stopped at the Grim's Dyke bar to have coffee at approx 11:30 am. We were sitting alone initially and a gentleman who appeared to be the bartender came in, looked at us (more than once) and started to stack wine bottles on shelves. After being ignored for some time we approached him and asked if thy were serving. He checked his time first on his mobile and said the food started at 12 even though the website had said 11. Nonetheless, he did say it would be ok. Two of us went to the loos and when we returned there was one serving of tea on our table. When we realised that the other 2 coffees and scones hadn't arrived one of our party approached him and he argued that we did not in fact ask for coffees as well. We all explained that we had and he was insistent - no apology - just unnecessarily argumentative. He then proceeded to tell a colleague who was passing through and pointing at us 'they said they ordered and didn't' loud enough for the other guests to hear who were then arriving for a wedding. We then decided that we would pay for the single tea as we were not comfortable at all. He still continued to argue when we went over to pay. Just to add that two of us are black women and one English (I prefer to think that this was not the issue here). We then approached reception to make a formal complaint. The duty manager Annmarie offered us a seat in the lobby area and we explained our misfortune. She was very gracious and reassured us that this would be dealt with. She offered us complimentary drinks and we were hesitant and wanted to just leave but were glad that we stayed. She helped restore our confidence in the service but it is truly unfortunate that this gentleman represents there 'front-of-office'.

Last time I was here for my mother inlaw's 6th birthday. Always had a fond memory of the place. The settings of the restaurant in the beautiful grounds of the hotel is stunning. But the restaurant itself has seen much better days. Although the food was of good standard, the decor is very much outdated and unformately the lunch time staff were not very professional

Ok - I have to admit it... I didn't have high hopes for this place. My father in law booked it for his family birthday lunch. Had the feeling it would be expensive and average. What a pleasant surprise. The Sunday lunch was of a high standard. Lamb was cooked to perfection - medium and gorgeously pink. Potatoes crispy. Large portions (not that I generally rate size over quality - in this case it was both).Desserts and starters were good too (fairly typical in choice - such as prawn cocktail etc, but done well). The grounds are lovely to walk around, especially he woods areas with the kids.Overall - very good, and nice to be surprised.

We had a fab meal al fresco tonight in the beautifully kept gardens of the GRYMSDYKE hotel. I've attached a photo of the menu to show how wonderfully reasonable it is for a midweek meal ....... My goats cheese filo parcel to start was delicious - crisp on the outside and flavoursome on the inside. The crispy seabass on spinach and mash didn't disappoint either and all plates were cleared with a big thumbs up for the fat chips accompanying the meat dishes. We shared a few desserts (the rich dark chocolate truffle was a smooth, melt-in-the mouth delight) and the lemon posset was apparently light and creamy. Coffees were served with petit fours that turned out to be yummy mini dark chocolate truffles. A thoroughly enjoyable meal was had by all, the price was extremely good value, the service impeccable and we shall definitely be returning.

There is nothing particularly negative to say about our visit to the Gilbert Room restaurant, which is an attractive room in lovely grounds - but nor did our party of 9 have much positive, certainly not that would mark it out from many a decent pub lunch. It all more or less 'did what it said on the tin' (I'm not implying tins were used!), leaving us rather uninspired and a bit disappointed as we had higher expectations than the reality.Comments on my own meal would be:- breads both perfectly fine (walnut and tomato, I think)- crayfish starter reasonably tasty but larger than necessary and served in an old-fashioned dish/style- beef main was not a large portion of beef, nor the tastiest I've eaten, and the veg choices were rather boring - again, served in a pretty rustic manner- I knew I shouldn't have plumped for the tiramisu dessert as it consistently disappoints wherever I try it compared to our homemade efforts (neither of us are great cooks - we must have used better ingredients) - it was OK- an americano would have been a better choice than the standard filter coffee, which was typical 'English' ie not very strong nor tasty.Service was pleasant but not really any more than that, a little more attention paid to talking to each other than anticipating diners' needs.I'm not saying don't try the Grimsdyke but maybe Sunday lunch is not the best time - overall, it's mainly a matter of expectations and we had clearly overestimated. My brother's comment sums it up well - they should focus on reducing some of the portion sizes and improving the presentation (an, in some case, quality). I also think that the welcome could be more fulsome.

Staff were lovely no complaints there...but breakfast was adequate only food wise....extra for baked beans !!! Tea was a bit stewed....sauted potatoes were dry and hard...tomato dry too rather disappointing...however the location is beautiful...Just needs to perfect the important parts that make a stay enjoyable and special as opposed to average and disappointing....it's a shame really as it has potential and we paid a lot for an average experience...I have had more satisfying experiences at a Travelodge

We were taken to the Grim's Dyke Hotel and restaurant by old friends for a light lunch and opted for the bar menu. The bar is warm and comfortable and had a friendly barman who was most helpful. We ordered their outstanding smoke salmon sandwiches which came beautifully presented (no crusts!) and was a sizeable portion. I had a cajun chicken caesar salad and that was excellent, a large piece of perfectly cooked and well spiced chicken on top of the traditional salad. My wife and friends had tea and coffee as accompaniment but I had an excellent half pint of real ale. It is a very picturesque setting and we certainly would opt to go there again if in the area. One not to miss if passing by.

I bought the afternoon tea as a present for my mum, however was very disappointing. The sandwich selection was very not great. The eclairs were hard and dried out, and the pastry was soggy and disgusting. The only edible part was the scones. We were expecting so much better from this venue. We did ring the manager and he apologised and agreed the selection was very poor and offered us a free voucher. After numerous phone calls, this has not been honoured. Obviously their customer services is like their cream tea, RUBBISH.

We visited for 'Afternoon Tea'. There are a few variations to chose from, like half cream tea (scones & fancies), Full Cream team (The full works) & Royal Cream Tea (comes with a glass of bubbly). We opted for the Full Cream Tea (just under £14 at the time of writing). This was with tea (or coffee) and refills were offered. A three tier platter was brought to us, sandwiches on one level, scones on the second & fancies on the top. Strawberry jam & clotted cream were also brought. Plenty to eat but, really, DON'T have lunch before you come as this tea really fills you up. Service was quick & efficient. We were seated in the Library bar area (which was fine) but we could have used the drawing room. When the restaurant has finished lunch, that is also available for the tea's. There is a veranda outside with some seating & umbrella's. Ideal when warm & sunny. A walk around the grounds will reveal some assorted garden settings and the ducks in their pond. Overall well worth while a visit.

My mother and sister arranged a surprise celebration for my silver wedding anniversary as well as a get together for my mother's birthday. The food was superb and there was a good variety of menu options for each course. The staff were most accommodating especially the waitress who noticed my young nephew was having difficulty cutting his steak and offered to do so for him. We were given a table in a bay window which made us feel like we had a private room but with the atmosphere of the restaurant. Each course was delicious and we were all especially pleased that my mother who is undergoing treatment was finally able to eat a meal she could taste and enjoy. The different amuse bouche options depending on what menu was chosen was unusual and very much enjoyed. I would certainly recommend the restaurant and thank the staff for a very enjoyable experience all round.

We had a fabulous experience at The Grim's Dyke and think it's old world charm and stunning location are hard to beat so close to London. We booked quite late for a party of 6 for birthday celebrations and were given a lovely round table by the window. The staff are very good - one waitress was particularly pleasant - and at no point did we feel rushed, dspite being the last to leave the restaurant. The food was delicious, with plenty of options and the portions were substantial. Our waitress asked if we would like our coffees outside and reserved a table under an awning for us in the beautiful gardens and then went out to check it was not being used before we went outside for the last part of our meal.Grim's Dyke offers absolutely fabulous value for money - in fact, a group of us are going for an afternoon tea and opera soon.Stunning grounds and a beautiful old house make for a tranquil afternoon and you're only 30mins from the hustle and bustle of central London, which I love, but sometimes it's nice to get away from the madding crowds!

Had previously eaten in the restaurant some 2-3 years ago when the food, service, decor and ambience made a pleasant experience. Booked a table for lunch for my family on Bank Holiday Monday. What a disappointment. The dining room is tired and unwelcome and the lunch menu was lacking in anything of much appeal so much so that I was at a loss as to what to choose. I chose a mushroom starter followed by fish and chips none of which was anything to write home about. An unpleasant experience from what used to be somewhere different and good to eat.We will not return.

My partner and I stayed at the Grim's Dyke hotel over a recent weekend when going up to see my my son and wife.I used to live in the area and had always heard good stories about the hotel and was quite keen to see what it was like for myself.OK, prices were a tad high, but when considering the grounds etc etc was willing to pay them.Anyone who know's me, will confirm that I don't really worry about the cost of anything, just so long as the product warrants it.Unfortunately the Grim's Dyke hotel in my opinion does not.It is very tired and needs lot of TLC.There are many examples and I won't bore you with them all, but a few are as follows:Dead light bulbs in the en-suite and several other ares. Sorry, this is a personal bug of mine as I think replacing blown light bulbs is such a simple task, but if not done, demonstrates (to me anyway) the level of service operated by the venue.Bits of ripped wallpaper in the bar area.Missing grills to radiator enclosures.Rotten section to the bottom of the en-suite door.A very, very soulless room, that would be rejected by a Formula 1 Hotel operator. If any of you have ever stayed in one of those, you'll know what I mean.A shower that provided the barest minimum of water. To call it a trickle would be generous!Tea & Coffee facilities in the room where provided, but no basic, standard tree. Plenty of Earl Grey and some of Twinings other herbal infusions. But I wanted a cup of normal tea, especially after having fought the M25 car park on a Friday evening to get there. We did request at reception some normal tea bags, which duly arrived....the next day. There are many other points we could make (such as why have access locks to the front door and then leave the side doors open all night?) , but for both of us the ultimate had to be with the full English breakfast.Apparently baked beans and Black Pudding are extras on a breakfast that is ticketed at £12.95 per person.Black Pudding more or less is understandable, but a portion of Heinz's best???? Come on, Baked Beans area vital component of the Full English! So to sum up, a great venue to visit, walk around, smell the flowers, but to stay there, Nah!

I have eaten in many parts of the world but it was most gratifying to discover somewhere really good on my doorstep. Having been aware of the hotel for some time, it has taken me a while to try out the restaurant but I am so glad I eventually did. Building aside-( it is taken as read they are lovely)- the important thing is the service and food and they are really good. The restaurant initially looked a little formal but the service was very friendly and truely accomodating. Our starters of sardines and fish assiette were excellent- beautifully presented- gorgeous soft fishy fish cake. My duck was tender and well cooked. Maybe the peas a little overdone but I won`t quibble. The bread offered 'gratis' was divine and home made I was tol. My partner had fish and chips- lovely chunky home made chips and nicely battered cod. We were so full we could not have desserts. This is a lovely treat to find. People of Harrow. Get behind this good restaurant- trying out interesting takes on classics and making diners welcome.

I went here last year for a mate's party on a Saturday night & I was lucky to find a table as it was very busy. The food was alright but not cheap comparing to other places plus I had a pint of Guinness & I think that was about £5.50 & that was expensive , I am glad I went to Weatherspoons before hand for a few drinks with a mate as this place is not cheap for their drinks. If I go again I probably do the same thing have a few drinks at Weatherspoons or at home so by the time I get to this pub I wont need to get buy many pints & just enjoy a meal.
