Second time I’ve stayed here. This is a wonderful character pub with rooms. You get a very friendly greeting. The rooms are freshly decorated and spotlessly clean And the beds are so comfortable. Downstairs the bar is always busy with friendly locals. The beer is very well looked after and there is good choice of so many drinks. The food is always really good - lots of choice. Always seems to be some fish choices and it’s all delicious. Percy, the landlord is local and knows the area well so is able to help you find the best Places to visit while you are staying. His family support him in running this charming Pub. I’ll be back for longer next time. Thank you Percy. A very good place to stay.

A really charming family owned and run pub/restaurant/boutique hotel, the Griffin Inn is one those superb discoveries that you find by accident and love forever. The rooms I've stayed in (1 & 3) are decorated beautifully, feature extraordinarily comfortable and huge beds ( a charming canopy bed in room 1) made up with wonderful linens, duvets and pillows and with compact, cleverly designed and fitted out bathrooms. But the real joy is the food for the Griffin Inn has a huge catering kitchen, staffed by brilliant chefs and support cooks, producing really excellent quality meals. The crispy belly pork is to die for and the homemade lasagne I had was truly the best I've had outside of Italy with a beef ragu that had gorgeous depth and range of flavours. I genuinely recommend staying and eating here... and if you do, have a chat with Percy behind the bar about the wines, he knows his stuff and stocks carefully thought through choices.

I felt really looked after. When booking I mentioned my 5 food intolerances and a few days later the chef rang to ask if the food he had planned for me would be OK, it was. When I arrived at The Griffin the waitress knew about it, so I didn’t have to hunt through the menu to find something I could eat and the food they served was superb. My husbands meal also was excellent. My congratulations to the chef, who I think was called Matt and to all the staff for friendly and helpful service. Will recommend and certainly visit next time we’re in the area.

Completing a north to south Wales bike ride with friends and stopped at the Griffin Inn for a night. The owner was super friendly and accommodating as we reserved 3 rooms on the day without notice and he was able to fit us in. Rooms were comfy and had everything you need. The pub has a lovely “secret garden” that was nice place to enjoy a pint. We had dinner in the pub and it was all tasty with good portion sizes, but stars of the show were the staff who were all fab. We were also able to store our bikes so definitely a great place to stop for those that are doing Lon Las Cymru cycle route.

Stayed for one night having climbed Pen Y Fan earlier in the day. Staff very helpful and friendly. Stayed in a twin room. All very clean and comfortable. Bar was busy in the evening, but all very friendly. Had a steak and a few pints of beer - ate in the bar although could have gone through to the quieter restaurant. Continental breakfast was great as was the coffee. I'd brought the dog, and finding dog welcoming accommodation can be difficult. Had a great time at The Griffin. Good value. Good service. Great food. Definitely recommend.

Yesterday (22nd. November) was our first visit to The Griffin and as soon as we walked in we experienced a warm welcome enhanced by the warmth from the log fire in the bar. We were taken to a table and handed the menus which were more extensive than expected. The service was always with a smile and timely ensuring that the food and plates arrived nice and hot. My “Lamb’s liver+bacon+mash+veg:” selected from the day’s ‘Specials’ blackboard was delicious. The two ladies accompanying me had the Pork Escalopes from the main menu and declared them to be really excellent. Afterwards, although a ‘macchiato’ was not on the list of available coffees, the lady serving us offered to try and make two. The first attempt was not quite right but the second attempt was perfect. Our lunch at the Griffin was a very last minute decision due to the Wye Knot Stop café opposite being closed (despite their website saying otherwise) and as it turned out, we were pleased that they were. It was due to the efforts of those who served us and especially those working in the kitchen that our lunches at The Griffin were so very enjoyable . . . so it’s a “Hvala” from Croatia.

Went out for my mother’s birthday and found the service extremely poor were the only table in at the time (early evening) and found it as we were being rushed through our food wouldn’t be left alone by the waitress also found her extremely rude. And when we thought it wasn’t going to get any worse when our food arrived it was burnt and over cooked, my mother and grandmother and my little cousin were still eating as they started to take plates away even my cousins plate as he picked up his last bite not even had a chance to chew before the plate was taken, again made us feel like we were being rushed out. The waitress just came across as she just didn’t want to be there, we were not offered dessert we had to go up to the bar to request it, my cousins felt so rushed that they left early before dessert. Me and my family found the whole experience extremely disappointing and will not be returning.

A Great Pub and restaurant again! Percy Haines - a young and energetic modern publican has taken on this iconic pub after a long closure and turned it into a wonderful heart of this local community. The beer is exceptionally well managed, you get a friendly reception from our host and his staff and the food is excellent. The menu has a good variety of choices and the food is well presented and is delicious. I am actually staying and the rooms are traditional but spotlessly clean and have everything you need and they represent very good value for money. It is just great to see a local young man setting the trend and reviving this pub to restore life in the community. First Class!

Several items on the menu not available, including the only vegetarian option. Food took over an hour to arrive, and that was after having to ask. Other diners arriving after us were served first. When the food did arrive, it wasn't worth the wait. A few slices of beef swimming in an industrial gravy slick, a few soft roast potatos, boiled broccoli, a dehydrated Yorkshire pudding, and some mushy cauliflower cheese. But after such a long wait, I ate what I could. No real apology or explanation apart from it had been "manic" even though the dining room was far from full. I would have been embarrased to charge anything except for the drinks.

It must be said at the outset that we visited the Griffin during the Hay festival and the place was full.We decided to visit after seeing some of the photos of the menu. Lovely welcome from a young girl .The place is full of character and clean. It was a limited menu perhaps due to the festival. The starter was acceptable. The main meal , roast beef dinner ,when it finally arrived, was disappointing. It had already been noted that others that had ordered after us had already been served. A nearby table had their main meal served before their starters! A long wait was not a problem but the fact that the roast potatoes were inedible was a problem. One could not cut them and part of both potatoes had been burnt. The roast parsnip was burnt in part but not so hard that you could not cut it.The beef was edible and so was the well boiled broccoli.A huge disappointment but also disappointed when one drew this to the attention of management there was no apology or expression of regret but simply thank you for letting us know and we shall draw it to the attention of the kitchen staff.

We visited wales as a group of 50 year old men and a well behaved dog. .The sun shone and we made the 45 minute journey to the griffin to sit in the sun and have a lovely time. The idea was for the 7 of us to have a lovely picture postcard day in a typical country pub.All looked well..the sun shone....plenty of space in the carpark ...then we noticed "no dogs allowed in beer garden" ....absolutely gutted...we sat at the front which can only be likened to an intersection in downtown bombay for motorcycle noise.. a few of us visited the empty beer garden to dream of what could have been and it's an absolute oasis compared to the paris to Dakar rally vibe that you get out the front. Please dont get me wrong I'm not a rabid dog fan that cant see sense but I couldn't understand why they would ban dogs from a lovely rural empty beer garden.

We stayed at the Griffin Inn for 2 nights a Tues& Wed we had booked what we thought was a spacious double. We were greeted by a very pleasant & efficient young lady ,things then went down hill the very small double was behind the door & one side against the wall this room (5) was more suitable for a single room bed very uncomfortable left with terrible back ache.no chair to sit on in room but when I mentioned this to owner he did say he had to minimise items in room due to Covid . We could not have a shower as even if you ran shower for 15 mins still cold. the owner did say the would be looked at. We ate there Tues evening & we had 2 very nice Pizzas especially the shredded Duck with plumb sauce, didn’t eat there the second night as were told same menu just Pizzas & a couple of curries , shame as we would of liked to try the Al la Carte menu which sounded nice, but to our surprise we were sat in the bar having a drink & seen a waitress taking out a very nice burger , not happy about this as not what we were told & had to eat at 4pm at the cafe across the road which was very nice but too early for us & really dinner & a drink where you stay would be better. The toilets in the bar did not have any paper towels & the hand dryer was not working Not good. The Decor in the Restaurant & Bar was very nice. Continental breakfast very good plenty to choose from we had to pre order the night before, Our room & evening food on offer did spoil our stay which was a real shame.

We decided to stop at the griffin for a quick meal on our way past, although we could’ve stayed longer!! As soon as we walked in it was just lovely, with fires lit and a cosy feel to it. We were really pleased with the selection that the menu offered, and the specials all sounded delicious. We each had a different starter and main, and none of us could fault a single thing about our meals. I personally had creamy garlic mushrooms in a filo pastry shell, followed by the lamb special with mashed potato and (I believe) a red current sauce. It was beautiful, the lamb was perfectly cooked and tender. Flavours and presentation were both excellent - much more finesse than your typical ‘pub food’, although portions were still good! This pub had been closed for a number of years so I was very excited to learn it was going to reopen under new management. I have now visited 3 times, but doubt I will go again. The first time it a visit with friends. It took a long time to order a glass of wine at the bar, 3 different people asking what I would like, I would have had a second with the meal but decided it would take too long. The food was good, but we asked for extra gravy/sauce and were told we couldn't have any. There were only 2 other people in the pub but it took so long to order, get anyone's attention etc. The next visit was coffee and cake, again it all took so long and no atmosphere in the pub at all. The third and final visit it took 1.5 hrs to have 2 courses, no atmosphere again, fire lit but it was so cold, kept coat on the whole meal. Food good but not anything special and overall expensive for what it is. There would have been a works xmas meal booked but we were messed around so much we went elsewhere, there are nicer venues nearby.

The Calamari was cooked well, but the salad was a poor addition, lacking presentation.Oxcheek and Seabass fillets as mains. They also lacked presentation. The Seabass had new potatoes. I am confident that these were from a microwave. The side vegetables were a small dish between the two of us and were overcooked and lacked flavour. This was not the standard of food expected for the cost.Another couple asked for the Fish and Chips, but there was no fish, so they left.I hope this was a one off, as there are many positive comments made by other diners.

It was looking very sorry for itself and it’s good to see this local business doing well. The ambiance is warm and inviting and the restaurants were full but not crowded. I chose the fish pot which was a mixture of fish in a cream and Gruyere sauce with herb topping...delicious...could have licked the plate! Others in our party chose the venison burgers which they enjoyed - good sized portions and the wine list was comprehensive and reasonably priced. There were several vegetarian options which is good to see - the vegetable stack was much enjoyed. For pud, staples included sticky toffee pudding and a lemon posset which were a tasty end to the meal. Our waitress was friendly and attentive without being intrusive and the service was prompt but not rushed.Overall a very pleasant evening to be repeated.

This pub has been closed for a number of years. It has recently been refurbished and re-opened its doors in July (2019) with a renowned local manager at the helm. He has successfully transformed it into a welcoming establishment with good beverages and a friendly atmosphere. The menu looks good, but the food however disappoints slightly, and lacks any flavour or flair - just generic pub grub. I had hoped for slightly more, considering the pricing structure on the menu, but this is early days, and I’m confident that they will raise the standard of the food, turning it from a good pub into a great pub!

Recently reopened. It's beautiful and been modernised but kept the character of the Inn. We were there for the Royal Welsh Show which was approximately 11 miles away. We stayed for 2nights and were made very welcome by Percy the owner and his team. We would definitely recommend this Inn to everyone the food was excellent and and catered well for Coeliac (gluten free) food. It was interesting talking to the locals as they were pleased it had reopened it is very popular!! Thank you Percy for a lovely stay.

Rather disorganised service, but the food was good, when it arrived. The bill was reflective of the reputation but not the experience I fear.

This is one of our top 5 restaurants in Wales. The food is great and there is a good wine list and also a very good pint of Butty Bach.

The rare occasion of eating out can sometimes be thwarted by a less than creative menu not the case here always innovative and creative, beautifully presented with love and flair.

While visiting the area, some locals recommended this place for lunch. Menu was small but ample. Our server could have been a tad bit more attentive. Food was good but overpriced, ample parking.

Loved to stop for coffeee here and have had dinner in the past but now just a distant memory. It looked very sad, all boarded up, Suggest Tripadvisor drop it from their list as it is now history!

En la esquina de una calle muy transitada, el restaurante está cerrado durante la primera visita, pero allí sólo por el día. No obstante, otra vez. El menú tal vez un poco pretencioso, pero con algunos productos locales de temporada. Tal vez una alternativa para comer en LLangoed Hall?

Have had lunch here several times, always good but not what I would term usual fare. The food on offer tends to be locally sourced, cooked to order and well presented with prices midrange.

Have visited here a few times when we stay in the area,, so called recently on a Sunday to find the place all boarded up a looking very run down, there was a notice in the window saying Nothing to be removed with out permission of the landlord what a shame to find the lovely quaint old place where we have had some lovely meals in such a state, one can only hope the brewery will open it again soon and restore it to its former lovely self..

Was a frequent visitor to the Griffin but it's since been sold back to the brewery. A real shame as it was a fantastic unique pub with traditional food and great ales. Id assume it'll follow suit like all brewery pubs now and become generic with a rotation of managers. Feel privileged to have visited the pub and hope it manages to get up and running again soon.

The food was average, the night we were there the service was really slow. The pub itself I suppose is typical of the area - it did need masses of TLC everywhere. Locals seemed ok with it. Unfortunately we would not recommend it or revisit it

The evening started well, nicely laid out room, cosy, with a fire much needed on a cold evening, attentive waitress and a well prepared starter. As we were out celebrating a special occasion it looked like being a good night Then came the main course - at £16.95 I expected my sirloin steak and trimmings to be nigh on perfect, unfortunately my requested well done steak was 'bloody' there were a few slices of mushrooms, a small, bitter half a tomato and a mountain of overcooked chips. As I hate bloody meat my meal was spoilt for me, and I was told a reduction would be made. When we came to pay, I was charged without explanation for a 'special' £8.99 being half the cost for the meaI that I could not eat. The person behind the bars explanation was that I had eaten half of it. I was outraged, if part of a meal is unacceptable then the whole meal is unacceptable and I expected a full refund to be made. My husband refused to pay for my steak and this was sullenly agreed to but with no word of apology. On top of it all we then waited some 10 minutes to pay by card but the card machine wouldn't work, so I ended up paying by cheque. As a couple who have run a successful hospitality business for the last 6 years we were very surprised at the lack of empathy and professionalism towards a customer who had had a bad dining experience at their pub. I don't think we'll be back!

My wife and I were recommended this pub by some people in Hay-on-Wye. What a little find. The Service was a pure delight and the warm fires make it a good old fashioned pub atmosphere with good Beer and the red wine was good too.We went there 2 nights in a row and on each night had different things off a short but well organised menu.It was well cooked and exactly what it said on the Menu. A pure and immensely well priced delight.A good find, thank you Hay.

We went here for dinner on a Monday night and really enjoyed it. The pub had a great atmosphere (even for a quiet Monday!), a lovely fire and good food. The waitress/bar maid was particularly friendly, welcoming and brilliant and really made our evening even better.

Not many of these places left A REAL pub serving good pub food A great log fire and stone floors The decor has not been changed for sometime which is just how a real pub should be Far too many pubs in the UK have been given makeovers that make them all look similar I dont want Wetherspoons look a likes I want character and thats what this pub has in spades The place smacks of history when you walk in Yes it looks tired Thats because it has seen a lot You can take your pint from the bar and sit a\t an old table and reflect on year/decades of others doing the same Anything more than the very occasional lick of paint would wash all that away Pubs like the Griffin Inn in Llyswen need supporting there are not many left The food is not top notch but thats because its pub food It is wholesome It is good value and it is prepared with care The staff are locals and they are lovely people In years to come these places will be sadly long gone So for now go there and make the most of it

My boyfriend and I stopped on the way back from a weekend in Cardiff for a meal. I've driven past The Griffin many times and always fancied stopping for a meal but I wasn't disappointed. It was a Monday night so we weren't sure if they'd be serving food- we asked and were met with a friendly 'of course'. We relaxed on arm chairs by the fire whilst we chose our food. There was lots of choice and my boyfriend is quite fussy about food but luckily there was lots he could have chosen. The waitress was very friendly. The food was home cooked and very tasty. Delicious puddings. We'll be back!

Called at The Griffin Inn for lunch. We ordered from the 'specials' board and I had lasagne ...with chips would have cost an extra £2.50! It was served in a very shallow dish, was not home made and the bottom was hard like it had been in the microwave too long. Served with a few bits of salad leaves. ..no dressing! Waitress very friendly though. Think I'll give this place a miss in future.

We spent a Sunday travelling from Wiltshire to Aberystwyth and back in one day and stopped off for a late lunch at the Griffin Inn. Lunches finish at 4 but we rang ahead andbooked a table only to find that we were going to be much later than first planned.A further phone call ensured that 'lunch' would still be available then and boy werewe pleased to arrive. The food was amazing, lots of it, hot and delicious. We followedit with puds, of course, which was just as fab! The staff were lovely and we left for our onward journey wishing we lived closer.

Disappointed. Couldn't go inside because we had a dog. Only non-dairy milk available was oat and cold - so no hot chocolate or lattes or cappuccinos. I asked if it could be heated up but apparently it couldn't. It was a very cold day and we had to sit outside because we had the dog with us. After having read the reviews for this cafe I had great hopes but I was sadly let down.

Travelled from south wales on our only child free weekend to recieve a terrible service! Arrived at 3:30 and the hot tub was freezing cold from the moment we got there! Tried to blame us for taking the lid off that it wasnt warm! Bed was unmade with no bottom sheet. Did not recieve an email with terms and conditions about bbq’s on the grass which id say having signs for people to see no bbq’s on the grass would be more obvious! Tried to fine us 100£ for the grass and 200£ for leaves being in the hot tub when i dont understand how you can avoid that if your in the hot tub most of the day/night with trees surrounding your pod! Just another excuse! We didn’t get the chance to use the hot tub! Filled us with excuses from the moment we got there promised the hot tub would be warm by 9 and then it went to theyll empty and refill with warm water instead, but that didnt happen! Also ignored any repsonsibility to answer our questions on when the hot tub would be useable! Could have saved ourselves £120 and stayed at home in our garden! Our third stay there and thats our thanks! Would not recommend or return!

It was a lovely pub and the food was excellent, cooked by Sue. We stayed for three nights in the biggest room so plenty of space to spread out. I can highly recommend. Will we go back? Definitely YES!

This is a regular stop for breakfast on the way to Cardiff. Service is always quick and food is good value for money. Bonus if you manage to park outside as well.
