Been here several times food always excellent. First time here for Sunday lunch. Was fab. Take a tupperware as you will not eat it all. Three of us went we were all full and brought a container full of beef and lamb home for the dogs. Lovely crispy roasters, plenty of veg cabbage, brocoli, peas carrots boiled potatoes Yorkshire pudding lashing of gravy. Desserts looked lush but to full to try them. 100% recommend

We were late attending our booking (which was my fault, I admit that I got the time wrong) and we were met with hostility from moment we walked through the door! I apologised and thought the place must be busy and what a hassle we must have caused. But no, in fact it was quite the opposite. We were the only ones in the restaurant, so I'm not sure if the awful 'welcome' was necessary.. The awful attitude continued as we ordered and the person taking our order couldn't even turn and face us, shouting out 'what can I get you' at this point I said to a friend 'I feel like walking out this is awful..'. But it was a birthday meal, so we stayed and thankfully the attitude was lifted a bit towards the end. But we did not feel welcome. The food was quite average, the sausages weren't nice at all and the meat (in most of our meals) just felt beyond average. The steak wasn't nice. We had heard great things about this place but unfortunately we were made to feel unwelcome and the food was below average.

Accommodated us easily without booking on a Saturday lunch time during a Wales rugby match. The atmosphere was friendly and exciting. Plenty of tables all around the pub, we were in a room on the right hand side at the front of the pub. The kitchen was open to this room so you can smell the food cooking. My vegan Shepherd’s Pie with a choice of chips was really nice. Hubby thought his jacket potato with cheese and beans was nice, he enjoyed it. I was a happy bunny as they serve my favourite Thatchers Blood Orange cider. Toilets are clean.

We decided to pop by at 11.37am today with our little girl to get some food and relax after a nice Sunday morning. The website as you can all see states it’s open at 11.30am. The sign on the side of the pub by the front door also states it’s open at 11.30am. My partner and I were dealing with our daughter just outside the front door when a very rude woman opened the door and (almost shouting and very rudely stated) ‘we don’t open until 12!’ There was absolutely no need for her to be so rude. I pointed out the website and the sign stated it opened at 11.30 and again very rudely said, ‘ I told you we don’t own until 12’ I will never go back to this place again and i will tell everyone I know about this rude woman. This really deflated the atmosphere and to be honest ruined the morning. Why do some people have to behave like that. She could have spoken to us like nice decent people, and got the point across

I really am in a state of shock tonight , we booked in as I fancied a steak and thought I t would be a nice treat . We arrived at 6.30 , they new we were coming as we booked in for 7.00 . When we arrived , they told us we were in the conservatory and only then did they put the heaters on . We kept our coats on for a while and said to each other “this isn’t good “I ordered a medium 8oz sirloin and my partner had a burger . As we were waiting the pub got fuller and fuller with drinkers rather than people having meals . This rings alarm bells to me .When the food arrived I really wish I took a photo of it as the steak was as thin as a chip , it was so well done I am honestly in shock . I have never seen a sirloin steak that thin . I told the staff and they took it away . I was told a fresh one would be done straight away . That wasn’t the case so I went to the bar and cancelled it as my partner was literally finishing his burger and I would have been sat there eating alone . The blonde bar girl did get a bit gobby but the owner said it was fine and it was the chefs fault . When we left we had a back handed apology saying he was sorry but he had lost three steaks , his partner intervened as I think he was a bit drunk and confused . Not the romantic meal we expected . Avoid . It’s a pub for drinkers

Love the Greyhound and have visited many times. Food is standard pub grub but usually very nice. However, last Saturday I noticed there was no longer a vegetarian option on the menu which is very unusual in this day and age. Also when my husband's meal of fish and chips arrived it was gargantuan! The fish was big enough for the four of us and there was an absolute mountain of chips with it. Totally unnecessary and really unhealthy. No-one needs that amount of food. The Princess Chicken was also much too large. Huge meals such as these are just contributing to the obesity crisis. Another point I'd like to mention is that it was very difficult to talk with the TV on in the restaurant. I counted about five screens throughout the pub that night that no-one was paying any attention to! Please just turn them off unless there's a big game on! Sorry to sound like a moaner, but I just think the Greyhound has lost a lot of character of late. It's still one of my favourite pubs and the staff are very friendly and helpful but it seems to be going the way of bars in America with TV screens blaring and spoiling the ambience of what once was a lovely traditional British pub. Ok rant over!

I hate leaving negative reviews however I must relate an incident that occurred on our recent visit. We entered the pub after a concert in the local church. Purchased two pints of Hancock’s HB a beer not seen in many pubs and was a very long time since I had tasted it last. Started drinking and found that it had a rather bitter taste however as neither of us was used to drinking Hancock’s beer I put it down initially to my tast buds. My mate found the tast the same as me. I drank about one and a half fingers and then asked my other colleagues in the pub to have a taste to confirm my thoughts of this being a bad pint! Yes all confirmed that both pints were bad. Returned to the bar where the landlady was serving. Explained the situation and after a little huffing but no apology offered us a Doombar replacement. Ok we thought bad pint to be replaced as expected. The new pints were poured to the exact level of the pints that were returned, by that time approximately two fingers down! We both looked at it astounded. Could not believe that we had this as replacements! Continued to look at it and eventually the landlady returned and muttered that we had drunk two fingers worth and she was replacing what was being returned! Wel yes I see her point!! But customer satisfaction o dear dear me! Never again!Thinking of the Faulty Towers sketch where Basil Faulty had served a bad Prawn cocktail and the consequences!

The mix grill was huge alot of it for 11.50 can't moan at that but it seemed rushes and red onion well am not a fan of onions and it ruined the taste of my food. I used to a couple of years ago visit this place as a venue for our local association union meetings. Back then the place was dark and dingey, ok for a pint but that's abut all. The place shut down and was refurbed under new management. I and a colleague decided to give it a go and see if it was worth returning as a meetings venue. The place has undergone a much welcome turnaround since i last visited. The bar lady was friendly and efficient, the carpets were much cleaner. It also seems to have had a lick of paint and was bright and airy. Decided upon the 8oz steak and rack of ribs along with mushrooms, chips and peas. The portion size was large, the ribs cooked to perfection although me and my colleague found the steaks to be tough and chewy.. The beer doom Bar was thirst quenching and he prices very reasonable. Will i come here again, the answer is a resounding yes.

Visited the Greyhound inn 13/3/2018 asked to book a party of 15 for a sitdown meal on the 31/3/2018 the woman got her diary out in front of us and we were told that it was okay as long as we leave by 5 o’clock which was fine with us . We then decided to have a meal at the venue, we proceeded to order our lunch we asked for a tuna mayo jacket potato amongst other meals and when the meals came out I noticed the jacket potato was very dry so we asked for a little bit of butter, so with her huffing and puffing she went and got some and as we started to eat our meals I then noticed my tuna mayo was actually chicken mayo so I asked the member of staff and she told me that I told her I wanted chicken mayo so I then asked the rest of my family did I say that and they all told me I asked for tuna mayo she then became very hostile and nasty towards us and said that’s what you asked for and basically it was tough and to just eat it. Unfortunately it wasn’t very welcoming for us so we left our meals and decided to leave. After one hour I get a phone call from Greyhound inn telling me that they have double booked my special occasion and that I would have to look for somewhere else. So besides losing money for the hostility from one of there member of staff if I have to personally recommend this place for a meal and a warm welcome I would stay well away.

This pub has recently been taken over by new owners and has undergone a slight but noticeable facelift. The interior is lighter and it seems slightly busier now but still retains its' old charm. The Greyhound does not profess to be a high class restaurant but does achieve a very good in terms of probably better than average 'pub fare' for a reasonable price. We booked as a party of three and were seated in the conservatory. The tables were good as were the seats. The rump steak (12 oz) was quite thin, which made cooking to taste difficult but the product from the kitchen was tasty, and with accompanying salad, chips, onion rings, mushrooms and peas a very good meal indeed. The vegetarian curry was also good apparently (I am not veggie so have to take advise!).I have seen afternoon teas being provided on another occasion and believe this pub deserves, at the very least, a visit to sample what it can provide.

Living local to this area, although not being a 'local' to the pub, we visited the new refurbished Greyhound Inn during November and December. We have now eaten here on 3 different occasions. The food is delicious. My husband would highly recommend the speciality steak/ribs, I enjoyed the lasagne. Having our young son with us, we were made to feel very welcome. Although at first, you do feel to be an inconvenience, since we waited a time to be acknowledged in the restaurant area, since the one bar person was busy talking to those in the bar area, when this conversation had finished, we were greeted pleasantly.

Me and my dining partner ordered the pubs Gourmet Burger, no explanation of what it was on the menu however the most expensive and the word 'Gourmet' used, we thought it would be good. Well, we thought they delivered the wrong burger and called a member of staff over. It was a burger with a small amount of undercooked onions in a very mediocre bun, no mayonnaise, or extras. We were informed it was 'gourmet' because it was a superior burger in quality and bigger than a 1/4 pounder I disagree with that. We were extremely disappointed and expressed that with no avail. The burger was very dry and my dining partners bun was hard. We did eat it(except the hard bits of bun which would endanger our teeth, because we were hungry and it was too late to go anywhere else. We expressed our disapproval again when the plates were collected. No one in the pub came over to see us, we did wait a while. Shame on you Greyhound Inn you have lost at least 2 customers plus our many friends who we will advise to stay away

Visited the Greyhound Inn today with friends we had the lunchtime offer two courses for £8.50. The food was nicely presented and enjoyable served promptly. We had two meals of egg ham and chips one fish and chips and a welsh burger served with sweet potato fries a round of drinks all for forty pounds reasonably price. The staff were pleasant and tried their best with our orders all served correctly.

Staying in wales for weekend driving round trying to find somewhere fuss free for dinner. We didn't fancy the Toby carvary so did a sat nav search and thought let's try the Greyhound inn. We were so glad we did. It was very busy in there which is a good sign as it must be popular with locals. To begin with we were told there may not be a table. The staff managed to accommodate us with no booking which was great. The prices were low but the service and food was brilliant. Fuss free pie and chips -lots of them with salad. My OH had a curry with rice and chips, washed down with a pint of lemonade each all for £17.90 you can't fault that.

So glad we made reservations for 5 of us for lunch yesterday as it was very busy. The food was excellent and service excellent. All the staff were friendly and efficient, and most accommodating (as we needed to move to a quieter area). Nothing seemed too much trouble. This is our second meal at the Greyhound , it was as tasty and as good value as the first. We will certainly return.

As mentioned meals cheap. Big breakfast was big and was very cheap. Cooked well but all a little tastless like you get from the cheapest meats especially the tasteless sausages. Could not fault the value for money but not the tastiest meal I have had.

We booked the Afternoon Tea for a group of 18 Ladies. On arrival we were shown into the conservatory to our long table. It looked amazing with white tablecloths, pink serviettes, bone china cups, saucers and plates together with fresh flowers. We then were served with our tea and a glass of Processco . The food was fabulous - an assortment of fresh finger sandwiches, a variety of small cakes, sausage rolls, quiche and decorated with strawberries. This was then followed by warm scones, jam and clotted cream. This was excellent value and a great service from waitresses. We will definitely return for another visit.

booked evening meal very disappointed in service and standard of food, had the sirloin steak which come with the trimmings, steak was tough as old boots struggled to cut also the peas were out of a tin and cold, they just wanted you in and out as quick as possible certainly will not be going back!.prior to going was looking forward as this restaurant had a so called good reputation but let me tell you they wont be getting a good word passed on from me, its a case of getting what you pay for,pay cheap get rubbish

Lovely place with really friendly staff, I have a nut allergy and I was put totally at ease, was shown an allergy book where everything was clear, and staff were really thorough and knowledgeable. Would really recommend!

This is the oldest pub in Newport, so it seemed rude not to call in for a drink. I had a half pint of a good hand pulled ale. My partner had a pint of stout. It is worth a visit if you’re interested in traditional beer.

Really sloppy service when the place is only half full seems ridiculous. Staff were arrogant.
