Absolutely delicious food and such a warm welcome from the delightful staff especially our waiter who had only just started and had come from Peru. Sorry, I can't remember the name of our waiter but he was utterly charming and attentive. We will be back and would recommend The Grey Gull 100%

Excellent lunch … my husband and I ate here and we could not fault the food, it was very good. We both had a big bowl of piping hot vegetable soup with two slices of bread and two bits of butter and then we had the main courses below,. It was also excellent value for money … two courses for £10 from a very good menu choice …..and you could add the third course for an extra £2 … a three course meal for £12 … you won’t get that in many places .. not to the standard of the food we were given … we were very impressed and the waiter could not have been more helpful. Thank you again for a very enjoyable lunch .

Great location if you’re walking along the Crinnan canal. We had well cooked fish and chips sitting outside in the sun. With our dog. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Good value. Dogs are allowed in the small but very comfortable bar area, though it only has low tables so only suitable if you want sandwiches and snacks. The Resteraunt looked very nice but no dogs.

Had a great stay here at the weekend. Myself and partner stayed in room.6 we had a sea view and the room was very large clean, we had a birthday dinner with family and friends. The meal was excellent, scallops were cooked to perfection and every commented on how large the portions we're especially the burgers. The staff were very attentive special mention to Allan who went above and beyond to make sure the birthday party ran smoothly. We also had a private function on the Sunday celebrating my baby shower everything was perfect thank you for a great stay x

We are staying locally and have eaten here twice in 4 days. First time we ate in the evening and both really enjoyed the substantial and well cooked beef bourguignon. We returned for the lunchtime 2 courses for £11 and it exceeded our expectations. As requested, chef cooked my beef rare and my partners beef well done, and the accompanying vegetable selection was all perfectly cooked (al dente) including lovely asparagus. The pudding was excellent too. The helpful waitress told us the chef was new and was from France. We will almost certainly eat here again before we go home.

Just home from a woucher deal at the hotel, this was cheap and I'm glad we did not spend a lot of money on it. The hotel is tired looking and the entrance and reception were very run down and dirty looking, our room was ok but that was mainly due to the lovely view (although it was quite hard to see through the dirty windows), Could be a lovely hotel if it was cleaned up and given a bit of TLC. Staff were ok, food was ok. Our room door didn't seem very safe. Had a nice weekend but shame that the hotel is so much in need of a good spring clean and a paint.

We arrived at this hotel for our pre-booked Soup and Sandwich lunch, only to discover that they had no record of our booking thus nothing available. We then had quite a long wait until they managed to rustle up the soup and sandwiches. Soup was very tasty but I was not impressed with cheese and tomato DOORSTEP sandwiches. We were not offered any form of apology. I definitely will not be returning or recommending this hotel to anyone.

We stayed at The Grey Gull Hotel for one night, and having never been to Ardrishaig before we didnt know what to expect. We were happy to see an extensive parking area and very close to the hotel too easy for taking bags in and out. We were greeted warmly by Jason and shown to our room. We were delighted to see we had a Jacuzzi bath in our room, which was a family room with one double and one single in it. My son loved the jacuzzi bath, as it has multicoloured lights that change as the bubbles go. So fun!! We had a little walk up the village and apart from a couple of pubs and shops there isnt much to see, however the views of the sea and the canal make up for that! Its so beautiful! We had a couple of drinks in the bar, and were seated for dinner. I chose the hot smoked salmon with salad to start and Cod with mash and veggies for my main - it was very nice indeed - they catered well for my son too and we all really enjoyed it. We had a comfortable nights sleep in the room, very little noise from outside and the room was cool and spacious. Breakfast the next morning was a buffet of cereal and fruit, with a menu for cooked items. We both went for Eggs Benedict with Bacon, it didnt disappoint although my husbands egg was a little underdone for his liking, but I enjoyed mine. We would definately come back and stay in this hotel, great value for money, lovely staff and good views.

We, a group of 6 people, dropped in without reservation. No need for a reservation because a lot of available tables. Passing the open office the person behind the counter (man) saw us but no need for a friendly welcome.4 of us have ordered the Rib eye steak. After some minutes the waitress came back - only 1 steak available. She recommended the burger. So 3 of us have ordered burgers. Guess what... after some minutes the waitress returned - only 1 burger available...The poor waitress, a friendly young person (the reason for the 2nd star), then recommended some other food.Food in general ok, Rib eye steak was below the expectation. If you spend the night at the harbor, take a taxi and drive a little further. My sister stays in Ardrishaig and has talked about the Grey Gull before. I was visiting her for a few days and she suggested going for tea there. We are both vegan but she assured me that the chef was really accommodating and had even com3 out and spoken to her personally on previous occasions. The place wasn't busy so we got menus and asked the waitress about vegan options. She was lovely although seemed a bit inexperienced, and went to f8nd out. She came back and said there were only veggie sausages and a veggie burger (neither of which are actually vegan). We were a bit disappointed but figured it must be a new chef. We then asked about the soup and away the waitress went again and it WAS vegan. We ordered soup and chips. Now all we had to do was get our previously ordered bottle of.prosecco. We waited...and waited...and waited... Eventually my sister went to the bar and the lovely bar guy there apologised and gave us it - along with 2 big wine glasses rather than the dai ty flutes the table next to us had - it tasted the same so no harm no foul! The food tasted good - although they brought soup and then waited for us to finish before bringing our main course - of chips! No-one came near us for the rest of the meal - if they had, they'd have got another bottle of wine out of us but instead we decided to go home. Better staff training needed as they were all lovely but didn't seem to know how to wait on tables (in fact one guy was wandering about with a pint glass of coke and just put it down on the table behind him when he poured wine for a big table!).

I would suggest not eating at Grey Gull, unless frozen veg still icy in the middle, old potato wedges incinerated to within an inch of their life (passed off as chips) sticky tables and gravy-less steak pie are of interest. Whilst a couple of meals ok, overall a disgrace. £50 + and two sore stomachs, not a good day.

The hotel is OK, but has some issues. There isn't enough parking space and that leads to a quarrel with the people living next door. In the room for three we only had towels for two. We ate here two nights in a row whilst staying at a local B&B (Kilfinnan View). The food on both occasions was very nice. A reasonable selection was on the menu, but don't expect fine dining - this is good quality "everyday" food at reasonable prices. Service on the first evening was good, but the second evening (maybe because they were understaffed) was very, very slow. We did try to eat here on our third night (a Friday) but there were no free tables - so if you want to eat here and have limited other options then make sure you book. A perfectly nice restaurant with good food - just watch the speed of the service.

We stayed for three nights at the Grey Gull and whilst it was comfortable enough it was very dated. Our room was very plain but a bit rough around the edges, like a hook having been taken off the back of the bathroom door leaving a broken patch, and no information in the room apart from the restaurant times on the back of the door. The bathroom door also had a problem in that it is quite warped so is difficult to shut. In the pictures on the website it showed each room having a lovely leather wing-back chair - this was not in our room so it was just a table chair to sit on.We had dinner in the restaurant twice, and both times we were given a list of things on the menu that they weren't actually doing that night. Our desert ordering was a disaster with my husband ordering a chocolate fondant torte and I ordered two scoops of ice-cream - mine was delivered in two separate bowls and my husband was given a chocolate tart. When he pointed out that that wasn't what he ordered the waitress went to the chef and came back saying that that was all they had left and did we want it or not. It was a not.Breakfast was a similar story, as my husband would have like porridge but as it was not on the menu he didn't ask for it and instead we had toast and cereal, and then we noticed people getting porridge - needs the menu looking at I think. Great views from the restaurant and the food we did end up eating for dinner was lovely.Be aware that if full there is not enough parking so you may need to park elsewhere.

The best attributes of this hotel were to be found in their restaurant. Breakfasts were, OK, if a bit rustic......however, bread for self toasting was left in their supermarket bags on the table and on two mornings the supply of marmalade seemed to have dried up. Dinner menu had a good selection and the quality of food good......chips to die for!! Rooms were of a decent size and generally well appointed for this grade of hotel. Front facing rooms had the benefit of loch views and although on the main road, this quietened down in the evening and during the night. The maintenance programme could be improved with several items in the room not functioning ....lamps, bathroom items. Management dealt with these, but these should have been detected before each room is reallocated. The bar is not open past 10pm even to residents and the accompanying lounge also appeared to be closed off to residents at this timelA hotel wth a lot of potential, in the meantime, room for improvement in the points mentioned.

Driving through Ardrishaig, hungry and scunnered having found nowhere inviting looking in Lochgilphead, I was passed the Grey Gull and doubled back in the hope of at least a cup of tea. What I got was a very cheery welcome, a truly magnificent vast bowl of soup, and a plate of delicious sandwiches with salad which easily saw me through until dinner at the end of my journey. And all at a cost much less than I'd expected.Ardrishaig & Lochgilphead both need a serious shake-up if they have ambitions to be attractive to tourists but they've got the basics (Crinan Canal basin for a start) and the Grey Gull is already setting the pace.

'What would you like for breakfast Sir' ?was the greeting i got when entering the restaurant for breakfast . The restaurant has an ever changing view of Loch Gilp, its lighthouse and Argyll forest beyond, and further down to distant Arran. My Previous request for breakfast was would 'you like to see the menu ? 'Try them and see what requests the 2 chefs manage. My full Scottish was quickly served and hot and lasted me the rest of the day.The small en suite bedroom was very warm with more great sea views and I was interested to see that modern skill had been used to keep the authentic look of the building - double glazed windows in authentic wooden sash and case frames. The proprietors are hands on and chatty sharing their wisdom gained from a life of living in a variety of countries all over the world. The cost organised on the phone was half the price that internet accommodation companies advertise.

Having arranged to meet four friends for lunch at a local hotel, we discovered it was closed on week days for winter. After a quick discussion, we decided on a café down the road. This was full however so we couldn't get a table. the only place left to try was the Grey Gull. None of us have ever eaten there before, but I'd been in for a couple of meetings in the past and the restaurant seating area looks lovely with nice art a good atmosphere and lovely views over loch Gilp. there was only one other table occupied in there at 1pm, so no problem getting a seat. we chose a table (no one seemed to want to greet us and seat us, so we sat down ourselves) and the waitress came over with menus. the only thing she said to us was " soup of the day is cream of mushroom" and then left. All of us ordered burgers "beef burger with cheese and bacon, served in a ciabatta bun with chips and salad" and tea for 5. we were brought teacups and saucers, but no spoons, and one tea pot which just about gave us one small cup each. we had to ask for another pot.when we were half way through our meals we remembered that the burgers should have come with cheese and bacon. they were delicious, and we have no complaint about the standard of the food we got, but were disappointed that we didn't get what we ordered.the waitress never came to see if we were ok during our meal, and at the end only asked " are you finished?" I then took the opportunity to point out that we were missing some of our meal. she shrugged and said she'd go and ask the chef. when she came back she said if we'd wanted cheese and bacon we should have asked for it. We replied that it was in the menu as 'served with' not an optional extra. to which she shrugged and walked away.when we came to pay we had been charged the full price for the burgers, and again no apology, or thank you or even goodbye. would think twice about going back there again!

This was my first meal out in Scotland and I was treating friends. I laughed at a previous review because we had the same experience of approaching the main door to see a man in his office eating a meal.We also weren't met but told from across the room we could sit where we liked. A couple of us ordered pizza, it was awful. A cheap pre bought base with raw mushrooms that was at best like warm and cold within minutes. The pasta dish also arrived luke warm. No one came over to ask how our meal was, something you would expect in England. When waitress cleared away my nearly full plate she didn't utter a word however when another waitress came over she asked if we'd enjoyed it. We replied that it hadn't been great and that it was cold and none of us had finished our meal. She disappeared and we waited and waited and no one came over. In the end we asked someone behind the bar for the bill, nothing else was mentioned by the staff or us so we left. That will be my last visit there. 2 stars for the location and venue as they were nice, shame about everything else.

On approaching the Grey Gull where we had booked for dinner we were appalled to see an elderly gentleman (who appeared to be in carge) sitting in the open office eating food with a knife and fork and watching football on television.Nobody welcomed us and our table was pointed to in the distance. We then discovered that half the menu was unavailable and what we did have was very poor.We will not be returning and will certainly not be recomending this shambles to anyone else.

We were very lucky to find this lovely restaurant after a long drive from the south coast. Very enjoyable, the specials board had some delightful fish meals and it was reasonably priced too. Later in the holiday they helped us out by keeping the kitchen open for us when we drove back from the Mull of Kintyre. Friendly, helpful and fantastic artwork on the walls too. Give it a go.

Met up with friends here midweek and it was a pleasant experience. Restaurant is bright and spacious and we got a table beside the window which allowed us to enjoy the views of the loch. Ordered from a varied menu and specials board and the curry was delicious. Had to wait quite a while between courses but this wasn't an issue as we were chatting but would be if you wanted a quick meal. Would revisit.

This was our first visit to this hotel for a meal, we live about 30 minutes away and decided to try somewhere else for a change. We did book our table and it was a quiet night but the fact that I was greeted by my name having not been here before was a pleasant surprise. The staff were very friendly and efficient at their job. The food was absolutely lovely, and the portions were the best we have had In any hotel we have eaten in area so far. My husband ordered steak and to get it with salad, fried mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, onion rings and home made chips was the best he has had, also a sauce at no extra cost. He has had steak at other hotels and gets a few chips and some veg which is not what you expect with steak, and he is always hungry after!!I would advise if you are a small eater to ask for a small portion as I was unable to eat all of mine which I didn't like as don't like to waste food, we had no room for dessert but the ones we saw other persons having looked very appealing The restaurant it's self is clean enough but some of the chairs are looking shabby, the reception is welcoming and the toilets are very cleanI would have no problem recommending this hotel as somewhere to dine out and we will be going again

Always looked like a nice place to eat when I've passed by, but this was the first time I've had a meal there. There were 3 of us, and all 3 meals were great - good portion sizes and excellent quality. There isn't a great selection of places to eat out in the evening in Lochgilphead and Ardrishaig, so it's great that one of the places there is is this good.

Un très bon menu à 15 livres avec plat dessert ou entrée plat. Des mets classiques mais bien réallisés.

This hotel is a rather fine building at risk of becoming shabby thanks to the elements. Rooms are big and comfortable. We ate at the restaurant, which is a slightly charmless addition to the main building. The menu didn't really promise much but food turned out to be better than expected and we had good meals here. Salmon steaks were beautifully cooked with tasty accompaniments, and roast pork the following day was a huge thick slice, with well cooked potatoes and good vegetables. Eating out in this area tends to be expensive, and often disappointing, food here is reasonably priced and better than most. There is a very good range of bottled craft beers, £4 a bottle, and some fizzy stuff on tap for those who like it. The owners are very friendly, and to my amazement rounded my bill downwards - I've never known that to happen before.

This restaurant is local to us and provides excellent quality for the price. The food is very nicely cooked and well presented with a good variety .To make things even better there is an inclusive menu which provides even better value. To be recommended especially for the views from the dining room.

Beautiful location, nice room, front of the house staff very nice.Very disappointed that cooked breakfasts finished at 9am particularly as our visit was during the school Easter hols and we had my 8 year old grandson with us. The chef and waitress were very annoyed when we came down to the restaurant just before 9 and were most unhospitable. My husband ordered kippers which were microwaved and leathery and the general service was very poor and unfriendly - we were made to feel as if the staff were doing us a favour by being there. Despite the lovely surroundings, we won't be back as the breakfast experience left us with a very bad feeling about the place.

We had driven over two hundred miles to see my niece who lives and works in Lochgilphead decided to try here for a meal as a treat for her and she even recommended here was beautiful looking hotel. Had no problem getting table.waitress nice and friendly.we recieved our meal my niece asked for the pork shoulder which said had crispy crackling this was not the case. She even asked for a steak knife as she couldn't cut the pork. As it was us that was paying for it I asked her to send it back which we did. we did this discreetly but to our amazement the young lady came out of the kitchen stomped over carrying the same plate and thrust it in my nieces face demanding what was wrong I explained as she came across angry and agressive! Never have I ever seen this before! The meal was replaced but it totally ruined our night! I think this girl should have it explained to her that the customer is always right regardless of her personnel feelings. Not once did this girl apologise ! If I thought for one minute we had done anything to provoke this attitude I would have got up and left . I'm so disappointed that staff are seemingly allowed to do this. Our steak pie was gorgeous and couldn't fault that . Disgusting attitude

I have been going to the Grey Gull while on holiday for a number of years now, although it has changed hands over that time I have always had a very good meal. The menu is varied and well priced. The food is fresh well presented and of a high standard. The staff are pleasant and helpful. I hope to continue to eat here whilst on my holidays in future.

In our opinion not recommended The location is ok, right in the center. Some of the hotel's own parking spaces are in front of the door We didn't like anything else in this hotel. It was probably the worst hotel on our entire UK trip. We booked a better room with a view. I don't want to know what the standard rooms in this hotel are supposed to be like, but the room we got was dark, very worn and very dirty. Even though the relatively friendly manager at the reception assured us that it was the best room in the hotel, we don't want to believe him: firstly, because it would be a real shame for the entire hotel, and secondly, because it's not true: us We've already seen that there were rooms facing the sea in the same category, where it certainly wasn't as loud. And our room had a window facing the promenade with several bars and cafes, so it was very loud until late at night

Best part: rice is available Worst part: butter chicken tastes sweet, like coconut, like a pumpkin soup. With pieces of chicken floating in watery broth. As an asian tourist, i recommend you come here only if you need some rice in your system

Food was of a high standard and reasonably priced. The mussels were the biggest and plumpest I've had in a long time. Would definitely recommend although they do add a service charge on to the bill automatically, irrespective of the size of your party. It's a bit presumptuous, but i assume you can ask for it to be taken off.

Great ice-cream parlour! Lots to choose from! But it's overpriced for what it is frozen water and flavour can't be expensive! To make but it's alright I would recommend this place more than "vanilla" next door 🚪
