Greenhead Hotel Restaurant in Barnsley

We visited on Steak Night and enjoyed perfectly cooked rib eye and crispy chips. The house red wine that was part of the deal was very nice indeed as was the beer. All of the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Would return if staying in the area again as the wider menu was very tempting.

The locals are right to consider the Greenhead to be the “posh” establishment in the area. It’s not fancy, but there’s a flame on the table and flowers and the cutlery and linens are a cut above other places’. The wine list is extensive and there are many beers available. Prices are about 15 - 20% higher than in other establishments in the area. The food is very good. Kind of nouvelle cuisine. Tasty and artistically presented. There are essentially two sides of the menu, with the right side featuring dishes you can pair with others for a prix fixe that gives you a bit of a discount. The smoked haddock entree was excellent; the recommend steak frites would have been excellent but for a section of gristle. The service was cordial, but I had to search out a server to get the bill. The only thing that kept the score from being five stars is an off-putting notice on the menu that, unless the patron objects, the bill will be increased by 10%, with that amount going to the servers. A more cordial means of achieving the same thing would simply be to raise the prices.

We come from Newcastle to meet up with friends from Scotland and everything about this place suits us nicely. My cheese souffle was gorgeous, as ever, and my two kinds of lamb was spot on (the extra side dish of onion rings embellished beautifully). Choice of 3 local ales as well as usual suspects was a bonus. Great place.

Food was really good, all three courses! Was great quality and great value was the best place we'd eaten all weekend, the staff were all great too.

Had a drive out to Northumberland and my husband had spotted this lovely place online when planning our route. Many extra brownie points to him as it was wonderful, the best Sunday lunch I've had in years. Lovely surroundings and staff, there will definitely be a return trip when we next go to visit Hadrian's Wall.

We stayed one night whilst cycling west coast to east. The staff here were helpful and friendly. The room very clean and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast both excellent.

Started with appetizers (olives, frickles, cod cheeks), then leek soup, then mutton and chicken main dishes. Everything was wonderful! Several drinks from many different pages of the menu showed great range for a bet this size. And Charlotte was super nice to our group of Yank hikers.

Had a family meal here whilst on holiday in a cottage close by. Really lovely pub with friendly staff. Thank you Charlotte ! All the food was lovely and we had a great evening.

We stayed here while walking Hadrian's wall. It's only a short distance from the trail and easy to find. We stayed for one night and had breakfast, which was included in the price. The hotel staff were all very friendly and welcoming. We had the set three-course evening meal which was really good value and the food was beautiful. The restaurant has real fires and was lovely and relaxing. Our room was really clean and the tea/coffee facilities were lovely. The bed was ever so comfy, and the ensuite bathroom was really nice with a huge hot shower. The breakfast was amazing and we ordered a pack lunch for the next stage of our walk. We really enjoyed our stay here and will definitely come back again.

We stopped in the hotel for a 2 night stay which included breakfast and the evening meal. I was worried when we were shown to the room as we were about 20m from the local railway line and I am a light sleeper, but I didn't hear a thing! Room was large and shower was excellent and clean. Liked the small bottles of real milk provided in a fridge on the landing for tea/coffee in the rooms. Breakfast was a good selection of items, and the Northumberland (Full English) breakfast was very good quality, the sausage can make or break the breakfast for me and this one was excellent. Evening meals had a good selection and we tried several of the dishes over the 2 nights, all well presented and very tasty! Staff were all very approachable and friendly. Outstanding value for a BBD option, don't know how they do it. Definitely recommend and yes we would go back!

We had our annual family pre Christmas get together at the Greenhead Hotel and it did not disappoint. A fabulous dinner with excellent service, a gorgeous cosy room for the night and a huge breakfast the following morning! Very good value for money, we can't recommend this place highly enough. Thank you to all the lovely staff that looked after us so well.... and they even provided some snowy weather for us to wake up to which has definitely put us in the Christmas spirit!!

We’ve just returned from a fantastic stay at the Greenhead. The pub itself is very welcoming and has a fantastic menu for lunch and dinner - classic British classics but elevated to fine dining. The breakfast was also superb and included a dog breakfast too! The room was very luxurious - even more so when you consider it’s dog friendly - with lots of space for our two year old pup. On arrival they even provided a dog welcome pack and there’s a great outdoor dog wash and bin. All local attractions are within easy reach too. We’ll be returning!

My wife and I stayed at the Greenhead pub whilst walking the Hadrian way walk, Firstly I must say, the room we stayed in was the best room we had on the whole of the HWW walk, clean, modern and extremely comfy, coffee and tea making facilities and lovely biscuits too! the shower was great and the bed very comfy - perfect after a hike in rather miserable weather. We ate in the bar area (I had the Belly pork and my wife had fish and chips) both meals were lovely and filling I was also very happy to see 3 great local cask ales on the bar which all tasted amazing and in perfect condition - the breakfast the following morning was great, using quality produce. I would also like to mention how friendly all the staff were, from the staff working in the bar during dinner / late evening and the lovely and very happy lady working the breakfast shift - your all a credit to the hospitality industry. We will definitely be back again when in the area as this was one of the stand out places we stayed at on the whole of the walk

Wonderful food, wonderful staff, wonderful night sleep. Came once before in July and loved the food, so decided to return now and stay the night. Once again the food was incredible and always amazing service from the staff making us feel welcomed and appreciated. The room was lovely, even with it's size it didn't feel small, instead feeling very homely and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely and again with wonderful service from the staff making us feel great before we left. Would absolutely stay again if in the area, amazing value for money and cannot reccomended it enough.

We arrived a little late for the lunch order, but the helpful staff and kitchen made us welcome and the food was great with special touches such as warm artisan bread. With our two dogs in tow, they went out of their way to make us welcome.

Stayed here with my friend while cycling the Hadrians Cycle Route. There was secure storage for our bikes, always a plus. The staff made us feel very welcome, they were all very nice, nothing was a bother to them. The room was clean and comfortable. Neither of us slept very well though as the pillows were way to hard, very uncomfortable. But the shower was excellent. The food was amazing, the best restaurant I’ve eaten in : in a long while. Breakfast was equally as good, set us up for the days cycling. I will definitely be coming back.

What a meal! My partner and I both agree this is the best meal we have had. Starters were absolutely beautiful, and cooked to perfection but the mains are where they truly shone. I had the Chicken and every element of the dish was cooked perfectly. My partner had the burger and said the combination of flavours mad it the best she has ever tasted.

Exceptional accomodation and service. The meals were delicious and of superior, fresh quality. Vegetarian food was great too. Would return again. Best accomodation and food of our week-long trek along Hadrian’s Wall.

First Rate Pub Lunch at a lovely bar with perfect staff. What more could you ask for? We had two courses each for £18 a head. All four dishes (parfait and pork fingers to start with steak and chicken breast as our mains. Food was very well prepared and faultless. If we’d have had room for pudding I’m sure they’d have been equally good. Highly recommended.

Stopped here after a long day out on Hadrian's wall. SO GLAD WE DID! Excellent service and the food was fantastic. I had a lovely risotto which was generous in portion and taste. My partner enjoyed the sea trout. The sticky toffee pudding is a must. Coffees were delicious as well. Definitely would return next time we're in the area!

We found this pub using Google but be careful that you don’t confuse it with the a place of a similar name in Brompton. We didn’t stay in the accommodation but booked in for lunch, The bar/restaurant is fabulous and the food is truly excellent! The service was prompt and very friendly - we would definitely recommend it!

Delicious pink lamb, fresh vegetables cooked to perfection. Perfect Yorkshire pud! Best Sunday roast I've had in a long time. Lemon meringue tart for dessert was also very tasty. Would highly recommend. Extremely friendly helpful staff too.

A friendly welcome, top notch food and COVID adaptations that don't spoil the experience make this a great place to visit.The Scotch Egg starter was novel, impressively presented and thoroughly delicious, While my cod and chips main was large, well cooked and served with really well made mushy peas and tartre sauce.Some good local beers as well. Would definitely return if I'm in the area again.

We stopped here after visiting local sites. We had a great dinner, starters main and dessert - everything was delicious and the staff were very friendly. These were really nice surroundings in a clean covid secure bar with up to date decor. Unfortunately our campervan broke down in the carpark, we were allowed to stay until we were able to move it in the morning. Cannot highlight enough how good the food was, a really worthwhile stop.

What a wonderful surprise! I had been to Greenhead Hotel many many years ago when it was a traditional pub with basic pub grub and basic interior. A pitstop rather than an experience which is what I was expecting when we visited again but the place has been transformed! We had fantastic food in the modern bar area in front of the fire and the staff were so friendly! It really felt as though the staff were genuinely interested in talking to you. I’m trying very hard to find another excuse to go back. A destination pub now rather than a pit stop. Thank you!!

We called here for lunch today it was a miserable day, the bar was quiet we were asked to sit wherever we wanted menus were given and order was put in quickly, food came shortly definitely worth the short wait, staff very friendly will definitely be back

Popped in for a quick bite - so pleased we did. We had hot beef sandwich with mushrooms and caramelized onions, was very enjoyable. Importantly there was no problem in swapping out the ciabatta bun for a gluten free bun. Given the late hour we arrived they were also happy to offer us something off the dinner menu - incredible service. In fact the service was fantastic nothing was too much trouble. Lunch menu offered good choices very reasonably priced given you are near a major tourist attraction (Hadrian’s Wall).

Group of 6 of us dined here for 2 nights and had the best burgers by far, and served with friendly and welcoming people.It was a joy, especially amongst a group of "hard to please" who gave applause for both the quality and the exceptional value.Thank you Greenhead Hotel

Having driven past the hotel many times before we desided this time to stop over for a late lunch/early dinner, I'm glad we did!Very attentive service, tasty food huge portions and everything was hot. Loved it so much that I'm taking the family there when they next visit!Oh and great prices.......

We arrived after a day long walk along the Hadrian Wall, and the Greenhead Hotel was a pleasant surprise. We had a delicious dinner ended with amazing desserts. The Guinness was also excellent ( I was dreaming about it before arriving in England ). All the staff of the restaurant and hotel was extremely friendly and helpful. Thanks again for the lovely evening!

De kaart biedt zowel regionale als internationale producten. De soep met brocoli en stilton was een topper, maar ook de andere gerechten waren prima.Heel vriendelijke bediening. Aangezien wij logeerden op ongeveer 1 km werd ons zelfs een terugrit naar de B&B aangeboden. Mooie zaak!

Called in for tea after a trip to the wall and expected a but of standard pub fare. Me and my chap both ordered the Greenhead Burger and it blew my tiny mind. They were so outrageously stuffed that despite being pinned in place by a skewer they were in danger of toppling. The Greenhead burger is an an 8oz tasty beast topped with a slab of black pudding three thick rashers of back bacon generously smothered in melted smoked cheese, finished with a little salad, sweet marmalade relish and topped with a brioche bun. I had make some adjustments in order to pick it up it was so gargantuan.The whole ensemble was super tasty and the flavours worked well. The sides of potato fries, coleslaw and and proper homemade onion rings finished it off nicely.I ate so much I drifted in to a meat coma in the car on the way home.The staff were very friendly, attentive and even though there was a big wedding on it didn't impact on us at all. Thanks for my top tasty tea!

We called in here hungry during the Bank Holiday weekend in May. We were made very welcome and the service was polite and prompt. We eat out quite a lot and the Title of this is a quote from my husband when he was half way through his meal, (the belly pork) which he heartily finished.

This pub was friendly and provided great food when we were here last September, the new refurbishment has now given the ambience a warmer more inviting feel. The food was still great, the atmosphere friendly and the prices very reasonable.

After a long journey by car from Birmingham how nice was it to be so nicely welcome with a delicious dinner and a lovely room ! All the members of the staff are really kind and helpful, the also have good advices about the visits to do in the region. The traditionnal breakfast was also really good. We higly recommend ! I visited the Greenhead Hotel Restaurant for dinner with my brother. The food and beer were very good. The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere and the staff are friendly and efficient.

My wife & I visited the Greenhead last week for lunch & were very pleased with the experience.

Stayed at the hotel for only one night, but had a nice time. The people who run the hotel were friendly and courteous. Only had breakfast, but it was beautifully cooked and set us up for the day ahead. I would stay here again, if the opportunity arose.

Situated just off the busy A69 and near Hadrian's Wall, The Greenhead hotel is a friendly pub serving local beers with a reasonable choice of food for lunch and in the evening.

Nine of us went for dinner at this pub tonight and each and every one of us were very very impressed. The staff were lovely really friendly but professional and the food was gorgeous. We had a mixture of steak, vegetable curry, Cajun chicken burger and gammon as well as children’s food. The portions were huge. And so tasty, if you fancy really well served well cooked pub food then come here x

Popped into the Greenhead after a trip to Carlisle. And weren't we lucky! The night was Pizza night. A pizza oven outside the premises, pizza's cooked to order....and what a pizza. Thin, crispy, full of flavour. Very very nice. Veggie, hot n spicy, traditional, meaty options....they were all there. Additional toppings available too. Washed down with extremely well presented and very tasty local ales. Just off the beaten track but easy to access. Very happy with our evening. Tuesday's in July are 'Taste it Tuesdays'. We feel the need to return. Thanks to all.....we were made very welcome.

We chose this hotel because of its proximity to Hadrians Wall, and in particular the iconic Sycamore Gap. We spent two nights at the Greenhead Hotel in March 2018. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Our room was large, warm and clean and the food at the hotel was lovely. We had a full English breakfast both mornings as well as eating our evening meals in the cozy bar. I'd definitely go back to this hotel if we decided to go back to the area in the future.

Ate here twice, first night was Cumberland Sausage with mash, plus and fish and chips all tasty and generous portions.

Fuimos a la comida era insuperable mi lb tuvimos una comida que disfrutamos. Me he alojado aquí unas cuantas veces, ya que es local en donde vivo y puedo decir que nunca he tenido una mala comida. Navidad es buena si buscas un lugar de fiesta con entretenimiento en vivo y buena comida es sin duda un lugar que elegiría!

We called in here while passing by and had a very nice Sunday lunch. The portions were good and the food was delivered quite quickly. The kids meals were nice too. We would call in again if in the area.

As part of a charity coast to coast walk we had an evening meal here. The staff welcomed us in and made us feel better after a hard days walking.The food was good traditional grub which was needed!The staff were excellent and looked after us. A truly wonderful pub.

Called in on way back from Hadrians wall having not eaten much lunch. We were greeted by a warm welcome and lots of lovely food to choose from. I had been looking forward to a recommended dish but due to new owners it was not available. Not to worry after our lunchtime experience nothing was going to perturb me from having a lovely family meal.

stayed here on way to scotland, gave short notice of our stay but was given a warm welcome,,,i found the rooms ok but my lady found dust etc so more attention req in the cleaning, the evening meal was excellent ,,,but proper sauce would be better than satchets,, the staff were very freindley as were the locals in all a very pleasant stay. home from home,we will be back in the year for a longer stay ,,,looking forward to the breakfast again ,,

This is the second visit and did not disappoint. We ordered food and were advised that the kitchen was busy but the wait was no longer than anywhere else. The food is outstanding. Steak pie, fish and chips and salmon were all top class. The portions are a very good size with great value for money.

We had a very pleasant dinner and a really good breakfast - both quite simple but generous and freshly cooked. The only slight disappointment was the excellent home made treacle tart, which would have been wonderful warm but was served fridge cold and therefore rock hard.

We didn't stay here but eat here one evening whilst walking Hadrian’s Wall. The bar/restaurant was busy with a mixture of locals and walkers/cyclists. There is plenty to choose from on the menu as well as a number of daily specials. My wife chose the lamb shank and I had the steak both of which were good. The atmosphere was friendly and the service good with a fair choice of beers and wines.

Great food, didn't stay but eat here on Wednesday, and returned for an equally good Sunday Lunch, the beer was just as good

Unfortunately our young waitress who was very polite having served me the last available Gammon I think went home and we were left alone with no further service.The other waiting staff in the restaurant.Having finished our food we left the restaurant and went to pay at the bar. When asked if everything was ok by the licensee it was easier to say yes.The food was average and the service was poor but it was a midweek pub meal.

Average food, I had chicken and leek pie and husband had chicken with bbq sauce. Chips were like chip shop chips and not the best and the choice of veg (swede) was a bit strange.The room we were in was also extremely warm (and made it a very uncomfortable meal) even though it wasn't a particulary warm day. Kids meals were nice and decent portion size.

A big party of us didn't phase them in the slightest and we hadn't pre-ordered. Friendly service and quick too considering the size of the party. Huge portions of very nice food. A very warm night but we were kept cool with the fans over our heads. Good value for money all round.

The people were friendly, accommodating, and genuine. The food was good, and the ales were fine. We liked it so much we went there twice before continuing the wall walk. It is a great place for locals, couples, families, friends, business, or solo.

We were walking part of Hadrian's Wall going east from Gilsland, and stopped at the Greenhead Hotel for a very nice lunch (sandwiches and tea) and a welcome bathroom break. Everyone was pleasant and helpful and the dining room is beautiful.

We walked from Holmhead Guest House to the Greenhead hotel for tea between two 40K walking days along the wall. The food was amazing (we both had chicken and leek pie with a few pints of cider) and the service was perfect. It was nicely busy and had a lovely atmosphere. Great location for anyone staying in Greenhead or surrounding areas.
