Had a great visit to celebrate my husband's birthday with our two children. We had afternoon tea which was delicious. The staff who looked after us, namely Steven, Beata and Kinga, were not only attentive but went out of their way to speak with the children and make them feel welcome. Great food and service, we will be visiting again soon!

A modern traditional style quirky hotel perfectly placed in the centre of manchester ideal for a visit to the opera house. Spacious clean rooms, nice lounge bar/area. Only reason I gave 4 stars is the price. At £220 for the night it was £100 more than the Radisson and it isnt £100 better.

We stopped for lunch as it was nearby and had enthusiastic reviews. Lunch room is basically a bar and the ambience chilled somewhat by the Civil Service using most of the best tables for interviews. We thought they were having coffee initially or we would have sought elsewhere. The staff were helpful although a bit distracted. The burger was good, but why a brioche bun and why a stale brioche bun. If a purportedly good hotel tries to do a burger it should excel and surpass a takeaway or else not try.

A large group of us visited for afternoon tea and were not desperately impressed. We had to pre-order due to the size of the group, but when the food was brought out we found that the menu of the gentleman’s afternoon tea had changed significantly- eg rice pudding instead of chocolate brownie/short bread for the sweet treats. When we queried it we were told it was because of Chinese New Year, and there was no apology or offer to get an alternative for those who would not have ordered this had they known what was coming. The cakes of the traditional tea were not all that great and not enough were brought out for us all.

They had obviously noted small comments I had made when booking and remembered them on our arrival which I was impressed with. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a mix of traditional and gentlemen’s afternoon teas and both were delicious. As we were a party of ten we had our own private ‘classroom’. Once finished we went up to the third floor for drinks on the wonderful rooftop terrace. Fabulous day and we even had sunshine! Only criticism is to eclectic hotels as when I asked if the staff got the service charge they didn’t! If you decide to try it remember to tip the staff separately and don’t pay the service charge.

I had organised a champagne afternoon tea at the Great John Street hotel on Saturday 26th August for my sister for the start of her hen weekend in Manchester with a group of friends... and we couldn't of had a more perfect start to our celebrations! From the moment we arrived to when we left the staff were there to cater for any need we had and made our experience so enjoyable! We had a train delay which meant we was late arriving for our afternoon tea which was no problem for the hotel and they were more than happy to wait for us and took all of our luggage and stored in their luggage room so we could enjoy the afternoon tea. The food was delicious and the portion sizes were more than enough. Enough that we had to box some and take with us to our apartment which we ate during the weekend and was still impressed by how delicious it was! The hotel itself is beautifully decorated and we was lucky enough to have our afternoon tea in a private room which made our celebrations more special. Thank you so much for starting our trip to Manchester off in the best possible way! We couldn't have asked for anything more. An extra thank you to Diane who took complete care of us all and made our experience what it was! If you are thinking of booking the afternoon tea here then don't give it a second thought and book it!

We were seated in The Library which was fab-absolutely love the decor in this hotel. The service, portion sizes (even if we had paid full price) and presentation were all excellent. My only criticism would be that most of the cakes were very rich, to the point that I could only eat half of everything (and I never leave food on my plate!). Would be better to mix it up with more fruity/lighter options.

Our party was three ladies and one gentleman and we would have liked to order the gentleman's afternoon tea for our gentleman but the booking form says minimum two persons. Strangely you could order one gentleman's afternoon tea if you paid a further amount for an alcoholic drink!!! where is the logic in that?On questioning the waitress she insisted that it was possible to order one gentleman's afternoon tea but notice was needed. They need to correct the booking form as it is misleading. We were also seated close to the door so there was constant traffic passing by. All in all we would not go back again.

Had afternoon tea as given a christmas present for the Gentlemans tea. Have first to say the hotel is an old schoolhouse, we entered the lounge/bar area but our table was up on the balcony and we felt the atmosphere was not as good as downstairs.Having said that still stylish and we liked the mismatched china on the tables. The food was superb with a good variety of items, scotch egg was fantastic as was the chicken and leek pie. Fish and chips and a wanton also included. For desert a most moist brownie and was divine with ice cream and cheese and biscuits. Our daughter had the ladies which comprised a number of sandwiches and a super selection of cakes. All served with a glass of champagne and a selection of teas.A most enjoyable experience.

On arrival we were made very welcome by the lady at Hotel Reception and the lady who showed us to our upstairs table. The waitress came very quickly to show us the special tea menu. We ordered tea and a bottle of sparking water which came quickly followed by a plate of small burger French chips small square of fish and two recooked thick chips a Prawn wanton a scotch egg and a small dish of chicken and leak pie with a white puff pasty lid. We were not asked if we wanted any condiments to go with them I would have liked salt and vinegar and mayo and tartar sauce. The air conditioning was very cold and although I eat quite quickly the pie and burger were cool. The food was tasty Then the waitress brought us cheese and crackers and brownie with ice cream all on the same plate which I thought was strange. There was no butter for the crackers and we were not asked if we needed anything. Not asked if we wanted more tea which by now was stone cold. We waited 10 means nobody came so we went to the bar and paid for the water we used a birthday present voucher for the food. What a shame our first impression from the two ladies who greeted us was not continued for our meal. For what we had to eat I would say it is overpriced but tasty

I came here for my 18th birthday with one friend. I did quite a bit of research into the different tea rooms in my area but I found them to be not suited to the situation (too informal etc.) and, in some cases, too reliant on themes such as Mad Hatter's tea rooms and the like. What I found at the Great John Street rooms was a fantastic atmosphere with a very modish interior - incredibly comfortable with a particularly pleasant attention to interior design. There was an incredibly wide variety in terms of tea available - to the point at which my friend and I had specific flavours to accommodate the tier of foods we were eating at the time. There was a choice of ladies' and gentlemen's tea; I am not sure what the difference is (as we both had the ladies').The food was excellent and held a wide span from finger sandwiches to macarons. As it was my birthday I also received a complementary slate with strawberries and rocky roads. I'd definitely recommend the Great John Street Hotel - although my experience was as a birthday event I would highly recommend it for, say, formal lunches - there were also other guests who looked as though they were celebrating bridal showers etc.

On the day of the afternoon tea a member of the hotel staff contacted my friend to discuss her food allergies. As a group we were really looking forward to the tea and had high expectations - we were to be extremely disappointed. When tea was served a general cake stand was provided for those eating a standard diet and separate tea stands were provided for the vegan member of the party and for the individual with the food allergies. An explanation was given of the items on the stands and my friend was advised that all of the items on her cake stand were safe for her to eat. A few minutes later a waiter came along and said that the wrong stands had been given out and insisted that the stands should be swapped with the vegan tea being given to the person with allergies - the stand included a cake with a huge walnut on it, a chocolate dipped strawberry and a cream based dessert. After being challenged on this the waiter eventually agreed to remove the stand and after a little while came back with the replacement tea - this consisted of a single scone, a chopped apple and a few segments of chocolate dipped orange - a poor selection in view of the cost. We were not offered any tea or champagne and so eventually we had to specifically request that these be served. After asking twice we eventually received these. When we had finished eating we were left with the used dishes in front of us for over an hour - one friend started to clear the dishes so that we could have a little space around us. We ordered some drinks and even when they were brought the waiter didn't clear the tables - in fact as they were so crowded he brought a small cabinet to place the wine bucket on as he couldn't fit anything on the table! The next day I rang the hotel and asked to speak to the duty manager to discuss the poor service that we had received. I was advised by the receptionist that the manager was in a meeting but that someone would call me back later to discuss my complaint. When around 10 days later she hadn't called I rang again and eventually spoke to the duty manager at length - she assured me that she would call me back with a response within a week. A week and a half later I still had not received a response and so I contacted the hotel again, spoke to reception again, explained the situation again and once again was told that the manager was in a meeting and that she would call me back. Three weeks on she still hasn't called.I am bitterly disappointed with the level of service we received during the tea and certainly with the failure of the hotel management to try to address the numerous concerns that I have advised them of. We chose to go to Great John Street Hotel because we assumed that we would have an afternoon to remember - we will, but not for the right reasons.

Visited for afternoon tea last Saturday. We have been before and had a great time so we were looking forward to it. However we were both a bit disappointed with the food/drink. Venue is lovely and the tea room is very nice and cosy. On arrival we went to the bar, I wanted a glass of prosecco however they only sell champagne, which is fine but I would prefer to see a drinks menu. I asked for a gin & tonic and the barman started to make it without giving me a choice of gins, when I asked for the selection it was very small choice and all very standard gins- not what I would expect from a boutique hotel in Manchester at this time. My husband was also disappointed in the ale selection, again used to most places offering unusual craft ales. Our afternoon tea drinks arrived, were very nice and good selection, however each section came out as a separate course, with afternoon tea it should all come out together. It could have been because we were seated on a really really small table so everything wouldn't have fitted, so small that we also had a foot stool for the drinks. I had the standard menu, sandwiches and cakes were delicious and very well presented. My husband had the gentleman's and it was not up to the same standard. There was plenty and it looked a good selection but we expected better quality ingredients, chicken & leek pie - the filling was extremely rich and the puff pastry top was poor, the slider was average meat with a tomato, piece of dim sum was ok, scotch egg average, mini fish & chips was nice. For dessert, brownie & ice cream which was nice but not very imaginative but the cheese and crackers were extremely poor- it included two types of cheese - Brie and cheddar and Jacobs crackers, he said the chutney was nice. I've visited several of the Electic hotels and this just didn't feel up to the usual standard.

Came for Afternoon tea with my husband - a treat from son and daughter-in-law - we were seated just inside the doors to the roof garden as it was a sunny day but windy, The staff were lovely and service was relaxed (we were not in a rush!) I had the Champagne AT and my husband the Gentleman's AT we shared some of each and found the quantity of each just right - everything was presented beautifully, service was attentive and extra pot of tea offered and accepted. All in all a great experience we have reccomended to others and will be repeated.

Booked afternoon tea for my mums 80th birthday. The food was lovely but service really not good. Lots of staff walking around with clipboards who were all very nice but seemed to have no clue about what afternoon tea should be. We actually had to ask for the tea! We asked for more sandwiches and the manager came over and explained to us that we were only allowed 5 fingers each! Really?? We had one small pot of jam between 7 of us and had to ask for more. This could be such a lovely event but there really is a training issue. Serving of afternoon tea is a skill and I'm sorry none of the staff, as nice as they were, have it.

We have enjoyed afternoon tea/ gentleman's afternoon tea many times at this hotel.Comfortable chairs and settees, desirable sandwiches, scones and cakes and as much tea as you wish. The decor is shabby chic with non matching cups, saucers and plates. However, on this occasion we were disappointed by being given heavy non china cups and one had a fine crack in it which leaked!Come on Great John Street, purchase more china and ensure an excellent rating.

Always fantastic service and rooms are luxury and worth what you pay for them. Nothing is too much trouble, we have been staying here for years and never had a bad stay. We have also hired the hotel on an exclusive basis for a party and they could not have been more supportive. Wonderful rooms, ambience, service and food!

My sons and I stayed here for one night to attend a family wedding in the hotel. What a beautiful setting but also a very comfortable, cosy hotel too. The balance between aesthetically pleasing whilst also making you feel at home was perfect. The wedding worked so well in the hotel and the setting only added to what was an amazing and lovely day. The hotel bedrooms were 5* with all needs catered for - nice fluffy towels and delicious smelling toiletries. All in all one of the nicest hotels I have ever staying in both in the uk and worldwide. Well done Great John Street Hotel.

I visited here with some friends. We booked a private room which felt very much like a board room and the actual main part by the bar looked much more appealing However, the staff were very attentive and polite, everywhere was clean and the Gentleman's Tea was very nice. It consisted of a mini burger a mini fish on two chunky chips, a basket of fries (??? a bit odd since serving the fish on two chips) a mini chicken a leek pie which was AMAZING, half a scotch egg (slightly over cooked) and a won ton, a cheese selection and a delicious chocolate brownie. It was served with a bourbon cocktail which I didnt drink and would have prefered to have swapped this for a different drink but were disappointingly told this wasn't an option, all in all it was a lovely visit and we were very well looked after.

I booked online which isn't a great system however when we arrived they checked our order it was wrong, it took a lot of backwards and forwards and talking to the kitchen and finally I had to pull up the email which states what I booked and finally they decided we could have what we'd booked. This left a slightly sour note to the rest of the time. The building and the room is lovely, very cosy and you do feel like you're in your own little corner with how the tables are set out. The gentleman's afternoon tea was lovely and would recommend as the selection you receive is the best we've found so far and every element was cooked lovely. Staff kept our teas filled up too. We were told repeatedly that we had to leave by 2.30 for a large booking however we had finished at 1.45 and couldn't find anyone to give us the bill till 2.20I probably would return as the food is great but would make it as an extra long catch up with the girls!

Had a lovely afternoon tea at this hotel, due mainly to a special offer. We had a ladies and gentlemen tea to share, both equally as nice. The initial entrance to the hotel was quite disorganised, which took the edge off the experience. Would have tea there again.not sure that I would stay in the hotel, needs some refurbishment.

A friend of mine said I have booked us somwhere pack your bag and make sure you bring you swimwear. The taxi took us to the Great John Street Hotel, it was one of the best surprises I have ever had, this place is beautiful and very unique, every room is different and sooo luxurious, there is fabulous history with this place too, it used to be an old school. We had glasses of bubbly in the hot tub and enjoyed the night skyline of Manchester. I have since surprised a few of my friends in this way one being my daughter and they all had the very same reaction. I treat my daughter every year and they give her a Lovely warm reception. You have to try this place xx

What a fab hotel tucked off a side street. Lovely decor and ambience from the minute you enter. We had the gentlemans afternoon tea which is a more manly version of the traditional afternoon tea. Portion sizes were great and all the food was lovely. Good value for money. Staff were friendly and food service was good. Def worth a visit if your after a twist on afternoon tea.

I've just visited with 5 family members for afternoon tea and it was lovely! The sandwiches and cakes were all really tasty as was the gents afternoon tea with cheese and biscuits and a great selection of tea available. My only critique is we all agreed we didn't like the pie in the gents afternoon tea, it was a little tasteless and too watery but apart from that everything else was superb. The decor is really lovely and the staff very polite and attentive.

We were given vouchers for afternoon tea as a Christmas present so didn't know what to expect on our visit. We were greeted at the reception on arrival and shown into the bar and restaurant area; we were greeted there by Marlena who was very friendly and engaging. We had a Ladies and Gentleman's afternoon tea and it was a very enjoyable experience and made the more enjoyable by Marlena who look after us really well indeed. Lovely touch being able to try different teas from a very extensive menu of teas. The best afternoon tea experience we have had to date; well done.

I submitted by mistake a review for the rooftop bar which was for the hotel. This is my favourite boutique hotel in Manchester a special find I came across it on a one off when I was invited to a special event with a friend. Food is delicious has such a cozy feel but with a classy touch. Highly recommend if you prefer ambience and would enjoy a drink instead of busy nightclubs and bars.

I booked the gentleman's version for my boyfriend's birthday. The food and service was excellent. The savoury items are served first as they are all hot, followed later by the desserts but with a good enough break in between. We couldn't manage all of the food so we took some of the desserts home in a box. Can't wait to go again!
