Gourmet House in Sefton

I used to frequently visit this place a lot prior to Covid so as we were local we decided to go back. It was awful. Cheap poor quality food, some cold, tasteless meats, strong smelling prawns and the best of a worse deal was a small piece of cheap chocolate cake. Nice staff on hand to very few customers and now I know why. Over £20 each for rubbish - Never again !

Very relaxed atmosphere. Decent food. Decent staff. It is a typical town centre Chinese buffet but that doesn't doesn't mean that it isn't excellent value for money.

I have bin twice to this chinese and both times we have left with bad stomachs, didn't think it was the food the first time but after we went on Saturday, we will not go back again sorry

Met with a surly, gruff “cash only” welcome. Extremely poor service- waited so long for drinks order that we started on the buffet, bit confusing to say the least. Seemed to be 2 staff on duty, one barely awake. Shame really, don’t feel comfortable recommending here at all.

When I first went the food was average. Now there is a sign on the door saying you have to now pay before eating. And Cash only! I will not bother to return!

We went as the reviews were amazing. I rang to book a table and the customer service was shocking. Whilst we were there a staff member was stood up falling asleep. The food was awful, we had one plate each and some ice cream. The prawn toast tasted like chicken and the duck was vile and dry. As soon as we left I vomited, it made me and my boyfriend very ill. I rang to complain and was passed round to 3 different people. I was refused a refund and asked to provide my medical records to confirm it was food poisoning. After complaining for the third time, I was advised a manager would call me back and never. I don’t understand the reviews, the food and customer service was vile.

We loved this place! It definitely is a bit of a retro throwback decor wise but all the nicer for it! The lunchtime buffet on a Thursday was superb- loads of dishes- all hot and fresh and they replenished them as well. I was impressed to see shredded duck and pancakes on a lunchtime deal plus soups and loads of dishes. Delicious beef in black bean sauce, lovely tempura, different rice and three types of noodle dishes includin chicken chow mein. Old school yes but tasty and delicious. Funny when my other half picked up something thinking it was a chicken gougon and it was chicken gizzards- let's just say he didn't try it! The desserts were good too with an ice cream machine plus sauces, loads of jelly, cake, little mousses a chocolate fountain and fresh fruit in the buffet section so nice melon and orange slices etc. At lunchtime with two pints of diet coke it was 28.00 for the two of us which I thought was pretty good. Good service with plates being regularly collected. I would definitely return if I was in Southport.

4 of us ate at the Gourmet House restaurant on Thursday afternoon & I can't understand the negative reviews. All the staff were very friendly & attentive, the plates were hot so u needed a napkin to carry them which is exactly how it should be & all the food was served at the correct temperature. We all enjoyed the food including the variety of puddings. We will certainly be back at the Gourmet House next time we're in Southport & thank u once again for the positive experience.

Food was awful and not worth money. Had to eventually go to bar and ask for our drinks order to be taken. Wont be back.

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS PLACE USE TO BE GREAT. NOW FOOD IS COLD NOT MUCH IN PANS NOT FRESH. TO BE HONETST IT WAS HORRIBLE WILL NOT BE RETURNING HERE NOT GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY.

We were overall satisfied and enjoyed the food however it wasn't very warm. Some options were not clearly labelled so sometimes we didn't know what we were eating.

Not sure if others are over zelous with reviews or we are too honest! Food was poor at best, all the food was obviously mass produced bought in items like spring rolls etc and rest of food was thrown together and looked exceedingly unappetising. When the dishes were running low they scooped it all into the middle of the tray to look like there was more. All food was less than tepid. Staff uninterested and place was dirty. I walked past a dropped sprung roll on the floor at least 6 times and it was still there when we left. At £18 plus drinks each We wished we had gone elsewhere. Very very below average

Honestly, not great. Read the reviews first, many of which were positive but I would disagree. There's a very limited choice of dishes, many of which are not Chinese. If you want a variety of different shapes battered chicken then this is for you. Many dishes weren't labelled or were labelled wrong. I picked of one thing that was labelled as "Chicken Fillet"(I already knew it wasn't, but was curious)...it was a mozzarella stick! Who even wants a mozzarella stick at a Chinese buffet? Many of the dishes were empty and food wasn't replenished quickly enough, despite it being a Saturday night and not very busy. Desserts were ok, but very small. Chocolate fountain looked like it'd seen better days and had hardly any chocolate in it. No drinks menus on the table which was disappointing. Overall, I probably wouldn't return and I wouldn't say it was worth the price.

We go regular here but I was surprised when I got to the door last night and for mother's Day the were charging 5 extra per person I thought oh ok may there is a different menu or a free drink for mum, but no nothing In fact some items were missing. First time we visited and were very impressed. Fresh tasty food, plenty of choice and the staff were efficient and friendly. The buffet area was being constantly scrumptiously cleaned and restocked and it was reasonably priced. Will definitely be going again.

Came here for my birthday back in May, and I was certainly not disappointed. Good food, nice surroundings and very reasonably priced. Can't beat it for the money! You can park on the street outside for a couple of pounds. Highly recommended.

We visited this restaurant as we wanted something quick but with a choice. We weren’t disappointed. Food in the trays was refilled regularly and was hot and tasty. There was a good choice of food and drinks were reasonably priced. If we lived in the area we would use this place again.

Really enjoyed our visit. Great choice of food. All tasted fresh. My daughter recommends crispy duck pancakes, my son loved all their beef dishes. Good service. We come across this little gem of a Chinese buffet place. All I can say you must try the food it’s lovely. We had no complaints what do ever. If your ever in Southport and you fancy Chinese please try you won’t be disappointed.

Fried rice very greasy. I noticed hardly anybody was trying the king prawns.They must have known they the cheapest, tasteless and most rubbery available. chicken tasted fishy. sweet and sour chicken like encased in concrete. I could go further but nuff said.

Avoid this place , my daughter made it very clear she had a nut allergy . The manager advised on which dishes she should avoid instead of giving her good advice telling her not to dine there! As a result she was careful and only ate as advised . Seconds later had to be rushed to A&E;! I cannot stress enough this place should be avoided at all costs,

I went into this restaurant with my friend and told the staff about my peanut allergy. I was told which food I could and couldn’t have. Within 5 minutes of eating I had an allergic reaction to the nuts in the food. Which caused a hospital stay. I spoke to the council regarding the food and when he went in to check he tested he food which did have nuts in the sauce. He also said the food hygiene levels in there are very poor with cooked and raw meats kept together. Would not recommend. Even upon going back into the restaurant they didn’t even apologise. They actually had the cheek to say “well you got a free meal” the worst restaurant and service I have ever had. Would not suggest going here.

A lovely chinese restaurant and all you can eat! Very clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful.The food is wonderful and so much choice. The desserts are lovely, especially the chocolate fountain! Keep returning with my husband. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We had been recommended this restaurant by a number of friends and definitely weren't disappointed.

Lunch is £7.95 per head per adult. There is a choice of 2 soups, both lovely and hot. There is crispy duck with pancakes, prawn toast, seaweed etc. , for the main course there is a choice of noodles, rice, vegetables, chicken curry etc. ,and they have desert too. The flavours are great, and the choices are great, if there is one flaw the main courses and plates are not very hot, but for what you are getting and the flavours you can’t complain. I’ll definitely be going back, the staff are lovely too.

I struggled to find anything edible dry chicken dry ribs cold chips this place is definitely NOT for me at all.

We visited this restaurant based on the reviews as I love Chinese food. Unfortunately I was really disappointed with the food on offer. Starters such as prawn toast were just bland, ribs were cold, chicken wings were not on offer on our visit. Prawns had been battered unpeeled which made them inedible. The prawn main course had prawns which were hard and the beef courses were chewy. Chow Mein was not replenished whilst we were there nor was the foo yung. Service however was good and prompt and staff were friendly. Puddings were plentiful. I would not return and would rather spend my money elsewhere.

My wife and I visited this restaurant for lunchtime buffet,and found it quite disappointing, ribs were stone cold the food looked as if it had been standing for a long time.

Went to this Chinese after reading the reviews. So went to give it a try. Every thing looked fine and clean and I thought we were in for a good meal.

Thankfully I booked a table - as at 7pm on a Saturday evening the queue was right out of the door!

This place offers a vast selection of tasty and well presented food with all the expected Chinese favourites plus many more dishes. All kept nicely topped up as needed and extremely clean and tidy. Very good value for money. Only negative is the beef dish on offer which is not of the standard of all the others

Lunch visit with a friend on 13th May, very busy when we arrived at 1.15 the tables were all full and plenty going on. The only downside was it was full of children of various ages with it being the weekend. The food was plentiful and hot, being constantly replenished it was very flavoursome with plenty of choice which should appeal to most people. Service was fast and staff very polite. We didn’t have a booking but a table was given straightaway. It has a ramp outside for disabled access but inside is very narrow and if busy a wheelchair would find great difficulty in moving around and trouble accessing toilets. This is a cash only establishment, we have not experienced any problems with rude staff or food on our previous visits.

We regularly eat at Gourmet House because we enjoy the freedom of buffet style eating.

We haven’t been here in quite a while so decided to go for a date night. It has been given a revamp which has made it brighter and very pleasant. The food is plentiful and varied from soups to duck pancakes, ribs, etc to curry, beef, chicken and prawn dishes. The sweets are also oh so tempting! Ice cream, tiny cakes so you can try lots of different ones and a chocolate fountain with sweets and fruit to dip in. It was a Tuesday night and there was a steady flow of customers which goes to show it’s a popular place to eat, if we go at the weekend I would definitely book ahead.

This restaurant serves great Chinese food. The food is fresh, tasty and appealing and the prawn toast is the best I have ever had. We will definitely be going back there and the food is also great value

We were slightly apprehensive tbh, a few buffets have horrendous rep. We booked in advance and were sat by the food. WE ENJOYED EVERYTHING we tried. Very clean place ( this is so important ) lots of variation, regularly re filled and checked. I was in king prawn heaven and could have spent until closing eating platefuls of all prawn varieties on offer. I tried nearly everything, as some food normally, would not order ( sweet & sour). There were duck, beef fillet, king prawns, mussels,noodles,seaweed, cantonese pork, loads more I've forgotten + various curry sauces and large variety of potatoes/chips & vegetables. Daughter & hubby enjoyed a variety of desserts. I had another plate of king prawns for mine !

We visit gourmet house several times a year, it is our very favourite Chinese buffet :) We usually visit for the lunch menu as it is a bit cheaper- but the selection is great whether you go for lunch or dinner. Full buffet suitable for meat eaters and vegetarians, as well as a great dessert selection and chocolate fountain. I love the ribs and cantonese pork, as well as the beef fillet in black pepper sauce! Would 100% recommend :)

I'm normally stay away from Chinese buffets, but until place is fab. Friendly staff, great with children, clean and well attended. The food is amazing. Not too salty and great quality. Literally love this restaurant. So glad my son chose it for his birthday. 5 of us for late much with a soft drink each...£34 total. Amazing and delicious!

We love coming here as a family for all Occasions. The staff are very accommodating and the place is clean with a huge selection of food it's very convenient to be able to pop in and grab a meal without waiting. We will be back when we nect visit Southport.

My friends insist on eating at a cheap buffet restaurant were they can eat what they want and as much as they way. Sadly I find the food to a poor standard which sitting in a Bain Marie for several hours at at time I can’t really blame them it’s what people who go there want. I don’t find it cheap either the bill always come to £20-25 per head. We could go to a better Chinese for this amount I feel.

I had a lovely meal with a best buddy at the Gourmet House back in the summer. The food is delicious and hot when you get into onto your plate. The choice of food on offer is good. I like the buffet style where you can help yourself to food and eat as much or as little as you like.

We had just visited the fire place immediately next door so decided to try here for lunch. Walked in to a friendly greeting by a couple of young girls who showed us to a table right beside the buffet area. The food looked lovely and there was certainly a good selection available, from soup, ribs, duck panckes with all the trimmings and then several mains. I tried most of the dishes on offer and all were very tasty although a couple of them were a bit cold, this can be a problem on buffets. We then had desserts of which there is a great selection of cakes, ice cream and even a chocolate fountain. All in all a great meal and at under eight pounds each !! We usually drive over to Wigan for a Chinese buffet but agreed that this was as good. The place itself is considerably smaller but this made it more authentic. The staff were very friendly and one Chinese girl spent her time just keeping the service area clean and topping up the food as required. Will certainly be visiting again

Pleasant, warm atmosphere and friendly staff who explained the dishes etc as we were buffet "first timers". Plenty of variety of dishes available and all fresh and hot. The wine was reasonably priced. All in all a really enjoyable and value for money lunch.

My family went here for my sons birthday they did have ramp to enter the restaurant but to go to the toilet it was extremely steep ramp to which I nearly toppled backwards. Then when getting to the toilet the disabled toilet was behind the door of the toilet entrance and was not big enough to get wheelchair in I’m paralysed so have to be transferred onto the toilet which I couldn’t do and had to wait until I got home then when leaving the toilet and going back down the ramp it was near impossible to turn at the bottom because they had put chairs there will not be eating here again

Been here on several occasions and always look forward to my next visit, staff are always helpful and pleasant. And the quality of food speak for itself. 5star. Wide variety of even for the fussy eaters. The cakes are a must.

I probably visit this place at least once a month. The place is awesome! The Chinese food choice is superb and there is also some of the standard British stuff that you would expect like chips, onion rings, nuggets etc.

Staff welcoming, attentive, friendly and polite. Clean food area and well stocked dishes at the servery. Food was hot. Not a huge selection of hot dishes on offer but what we tried, was delicious. A vast array of desserts on offer. We are visitors to Southport and definitely recommend a visit.

This is a lovely and clean place with such a good choice of food and desserts. A chocolate fountain and an ice cream machine aswell makes it great for the kids and the adults! They have sausages, nuggets and chips for the kids too.

The most rudest staff persons you will ever meet. Ridiculously priced and the attitude in there is terrible. Definitely don't recommend eating there, Kung Fu would be the best option.

Went for a birthday celebration. Food choice in buffet was good and quality was good. A big negative was that my 2 daughters (aged 12 and 10) were charged adult prices instead of half price kids. Staff informed me that they class a child as 8 years and under. The front window display states a child must be 140cm or under. My daughters are slightly taller. If they were under 140cm I would have stood my ground. The receipt stated '3 adult dinners' when in reality we were 1 adult and 2 childen. Left feeling diddled. They should look up definition of an adult and use it correctly in their pricing. Disappointed.

Went for lunch yesterday with two of my children. Came to pay the bill and card would not go through as no connection. Told to go get cash & I should have paid before I ate!! Manager Sindy keept my card and threatened to call police in front of my crying child!!! She frog marched me forcefully to get the cash in street!! Outrageous. The place is a sham. Who treats people like that. If your business is scamming tax man at least be upfront about cash only & don’t terrorise children. Disgusting

Went in for food with my friend my 8 yr old and 3 yr old.. the 3 yr old had minimal amounts of food mainly taking bits off mine an her mums plate.. they charged me nearly £3 for rola cola. My bill was £50 for 2 adults a child and a baby.. when challenged we got it’s under new management and when looked online at prices they were different from what we got charged. The food wasn’t fabulous the duck was hard and fatty and if your just popping in for a bite to eat make sure you have deep pockets

Visited here with my girlfriend and adult family yesterday and would definitely go back. The staff were really friendly and didn’t rush us as is common in some buffet places.

Decided to go on Wednesday 2nd of May following recommendation from a friend. (Can't beat word of mouth). Had no problems getting a table but I think when we go at the weekend we will definitely have to book. The staff were very friendly and there was a great of selection of dishes, unusual for "an eat all you can" buffet. The food was hot and fresh and the place was immaculate. (I don't usually mentions loos but these loos are cleanliness personified). Parking is a little difficult which is why we've marked it down by 1 but I'd recommend this Chinese Gem to anyone.

Three of us decided to go to The Gourmet House on Saturday evening, we were warmly greeted and escorted to our reserved table, passing about 10 people by the entrance, who didn't reserve and were waiting for tables to be made available. The place was packed, noisy and chaotic, obviously very popular. At £13.95 per person for as much Chinese food as you could eat you could not complain. The selection was amazing and delicious, I recommend the spare ribs. My only complaint was that a Diet Coke cost £2.70. We enjoyed the experience and the food, full marks to all the staff who were worked off their feet, but we all agreed that it was not our cup of tea, but glad we went. CASH ONLY (strange).... .
