I hate instant mash, food very bland and boring. Breakfast was a complete shambles, ran out of everything and people had to wait until 08.45 for the 0800 breakfast. Half of the resulting food was undercooked! Just not good enough

Ate here one evening recently with work colleagues. A small select menu but that's ok so long as the food is good. Well, what can i say? This was one of the worst food experiences we have had whilst travelling the country on business. Ordered fish and chips. Simple to cook I'd have thought but hadn't been prepared for just how badly it could be done. Batter was thick, overcooked and hard. Fish was so dried up was hardly anything you'd remotely consider to be fish. Rancid (literally) mushy peas and undercooked, cold chips. My colleagues had beef curry... tough as old boots and totally inedible. The chef agreed when we complained about the state of our meals.... not tge point. Why bother offering a restaurant service at all if willing to serve such substandard food. Do not bother visiting this restaurant and, most certainly, do not stay at tge h

The evening menu for our all-inclusive package was quite varied. Steaks attracted a small supplement. Breakfast was buffet style; the All-English and omelettes were superb. All the food we had was good portions, nicely cooked and well presented. Overall, excellent value for money.

The restaurant and bar were nicely decorated and clean. However, the food was not fresh I.e. tinned mushrooms for breakfast and for garlic mushrooms. Seemed like the food was mainly bought in ready prepared.

Steak was not fresh and not cooked right. I ordered medium done, it was fully done. It looked like the meat just came out of the fridge, it had a strange structure and no taste to it. Vegetables were not fresh and not well prepared. Wine: we asked for a wine list, which we got. We picked wine from the list, then the manager came back with 3 bottles of wine that were not on the list, saying that this was all the wine that he had! Then why come up with the wine list? Coffee: I ordered a cappuccino after dinner, but got something that was more a macchiato with too much milk or not enough coffee.

Mothers Day at the Goldthorn. First course Leek and Potato soup, While I rarely put salt on anything I eat, or cook with salt for that matter this particular bowl of soup had no rich base and was under seasoned to the point of being tasteless. With a couple of lonely croutons there was more flavour in the glass of water I had on the side. 3/10 I also had the opportunity to try a Caesar Salad which on the menu promised a topping of crispy bacon. Really? What appeared was fresh crispy salad, a small plus, but coated in a Caesar dressing that was over salted. The crispy bacon had been substituted with tiny pieces of chopped processed ham. A disaster. 2/10 For the main course it was Roast Loin of Pork on a bed of mash, seasonal vegetables and roast potatoes. It could have been hotter, the mash which incidentally was probably either ready made or a Smash variety was cold. The two thin slices of Pork Loin sitting on top dry as a desert around the edges. The gravy though, wasn’t bad, nicely seasoned and not too thick to pour. 2/5 The vegetables were a mixture of over cooked frozen chopped green beans that had gone a shade of grey, under cooked sliced leek and watery cabbage. The carrots were fine except for the one on my plate with a long black hair stuck firmly to it. The roast potatoes must have spent sometime in a rain forest, the skins wet and rubbery and no longer crisp, probably heated in a steam oven or microwave. They did not have light and fluffy centres. It certainly was not piping hot, more a tepid British summers day. 1\5 Finally I finished off with Cheese and WIld Berries. Perfectly in order the cheese cake light, the base crumbly and the berries tart. Perfectly in order except for the large thumb print on the top. 3/5 I also tasted the Triple Choc Gateau which was in fact nicely balanced, with a light sponge and not overly sweet. 4/10 The coffee was fine. As I was a guest and not paying the bill I kept this matter pretty much under my hat (which I was not wearing at the time) as it would have been rude to my hosts. However it was a set menu, was not that expensive considering it was three courses and coffee. All credit to the staff, they were friendly and courteous. 5/5 I actually felt nostalgic for a few moments as it reminded me of school dinners served to me in the 1970’s, in a school not so far away…..

We shared a super family breakfast after a one night stay. There was no problem in a table being laid for 8 of us although we were 3 families who had booked separately. The menu was extensive with plenty of choice. The hot meals were cooked to order & were served well cooked & hot by very pleasant staff.

Starters were good, steaks were nice, cooked as requested, rump of lamb was very tender. Minted mash had no mint, rosemary jus was lumpy and had no rosemary, honey roasted root vegetables didn't appear at all but a lot of garden peas did, pork belly had no crackling, mustard mash had no mustard, braised red cabbage didn't appear either but a plateful of carrots did. It would have been nice to have been informed the vegetables weren't available and allowed to make a choice rather than the chef just substituting peas or carrots. Why bother producing a menu if the chef just makes changes without consulting customers? Cheese board was okay, lemon tart with ice cream came with cream, was sent back and came out with cream and ice cream. Thank you to the Manager who did speak to us, apologised profusely, took two main courses off the bill and bought us a round of drinks. Spoilt the evening though as we didn't go out to have money knocked off the bill, just wanted to have a nice meal out with friends.

My friend and I bought a 'livingsocial' voucher for afternoon and used it last month. we hadn't seen each for a while so it was a special way to get together for a good old natter! we were greeted with a very friendly welcome at reception and went into the restaurant. The room looked beautiful and most of the tables were laid for dinner. at the far end of the room the tables were more simply for afternoon tea. We were offered a glass of wine (included in our voucher) and after we had been brought these we were given a bowl of soup which was lovely. we were then brought a cake stand full of small sandwiches, cake and jam and cream and scones. Tea came in a pot with some extra water that I'd requested and everything was so delicious. The waitress who served us was extremely efficient and looked after us very well. I would recommend a visit anytime but especially for a special afternoon treat. We will go again.

We eat out on a regular basis so wanted to try somewhere 'new' for a change..Although we have been here in the past but not for a long, long time. It was a Sunday evening so thought it would be quiet. I booked a table for 2 by telephone and the lady was very pleasant. When we arrived we went to reception and asked where the restaurant was, 'just to the left' we were told, which was ok but they didn't ask our name or time we had booked the table and really should have taken us there, anyway we found it, it was 'just there on the left'! There was no one to 'greet' us, we could've just walked in 'off the street' so we asked the gentleman behind the bar, he said 'just go in a sit where you like'. The room was quite busy, this was just after 8.30pm, mostly families, which surprised us, a table of young men and another couple. It had the feel of a 'holiday hotel' dining room, one family were playing cards in between courses! The room itself was quite scruffy and the chairs were worn and marked. It wasn't exactly a place for a romantic candlelit meal for two, which luckily we hadn't gone for, but if we had of done it wouldn't have been, it was too bright for a start and I sat right under a spotlight! There was one young man serving so it took a while to take our order, we did think of leaving after 15 minutes waiting as we weren't impressed. The 'barman' finally came over with the menu, which was the Sunday Lunch menu, I think we could've had the a la carte if we had asked for it but we weren't offered any other menu. He took our order for the drinks, a pint & a tonic water. When he brought the drinks he gave me the pint and my husband the tonic water!! We ordered our starter & mains at that point, we also expected a bread roll whilst we waited but nothing! when the young man brought our starters he did apologise for the initial wait and he was very polite, Sir & Madam etc. the starter was very nice , melon with fruit compote, for our mains we both had salmon accompanied by seasonal veg. you couldn't fault the meal tbh. We only had the two courses. Now the next thing was do you wait for them to bring the bill or do you get up and just walk out to reception?? Nobody came to clear the plates and ask if everything was ok or if we wanted a sweet, so we just got up and went to reception. We had no table number but the receptionist seemed to know what we had to eat although she hadn't included the drinks, we could've made a quick escape but she was really nice and we felt guilty so we pointed out she hadn't taken for the drinks. All in all we won't be going back in a hurry, although like I say the food was good, but we were disappointed, as we thought it was considered one of the better Hotels in Wolverhampton.

My wife and I attended the goldthorn for Sunday lunch on 09/06/2013.we purchased an offer of the groupon site and although the offer was supposed to end in April, they couldn't accommodate us until that Sunday, which to us wasn't a problem. We were shown to the bar area for a drink whilst we were shown the menu and waited for our table to be ready. The menu offered a choice of 3 starters, 4 mains and 3 deserts. After around 5 minutes we were asked if we were ready to order, the order was taken very politely with information about each dish on the menu offered if we asked. We were then taken to our table and within a few minutes our starters arrived. We were left alone to eat our starters and given enough time to chat before the plates were cleared and our mains arrived. The same happened with our mains and we at no time felt rushed to leave the table. We were offered coffee or tea at the end of our meal and we decided to have our coffees in the bar area which proved to be no problem at all. The meal portions were just enough for us and we felt pleasantly full on our departure. All in all we found a very pleasant experience with all the staff that waited on use being very professional and polite. We will probably go again paying full price next time.well done everyone at the Goldthorn Hotel.

We purchased a Sunday lunch for 2 via a Groupon offer, however we were dismayed back in February when we phoned to book it and were told we would have to wait 3 months to use it (which would be past it's April expiration date ) because they were that busy and didn't have any available bookings until then. Fine. We booked it in for May and thought it should be good given that there's a 3 month waiting list. How wrong we were. Food was average, meat looked like the kind you get in cheap pubs that buy it pre-sliced, veg was over cooked, very stingy on the gravy. It did taste OK though. Service was a bit of a let down too. When we arrived it started off well and as we were early we bought a drink from the bar (£3.70 for 2 half pints of coke). A member of staff gave us a menu in the reception area and then came back 10 mins later to take our order. When then waited another 5-10 mins to be seated and the starter arrived straight away.No-one offered us any drinks (we had finished our previous ones and left the glasses in the bar) and we had to ask twice to get one. Then it took about 15 mins for the drinks to arrive and one of the glasses was only half full of orange juice (small half pint glass), I questioned where the rest of the drink was and they filled it up (no idea if we got charged extra as no itemised bill is produced). Also a slight delay with our main dishes, we were waiting for quite a while and the serving staff kept asking us if we'd had our mains yet! Eventually they arrived and we did receive an apology as there was a 'mix-up' in the kitchen.Dessert was OK but very basic, I had the ice cream which was a scoop of vanilla, strawberry & chocolate. My partner had the apple pie.The whole experience was much like being in a residential home, with the decor, the food etc..In all, it was edible. But I wouldn't eat there again as it was a massive inconvenice having to book so far in advance, and really not worth the wait.

Wife and I have just returned from Sunday lunch (£13 for 2 on a Living social deal - value for money and more). The meal was excellent the staff friendly and efficient, the place was packed but everyone was having a great time. Nothing too fancy on the menu but it was well cooked and delicious. I had Stilton and Apricot salad to start followed by Roast Beef with all the trimmings with chocolate fudge cake and ice cream for dessert. Coffee was included too. My wife had melon starter, Roast Pork for the main course with a specially made strawberries and meringue for dessert. She is Coeliac and so needs a gluten free meal - this was no problem, proper gravy and a pudding she could eat!It is sometime since we have been to the Goldthorn and last visit was only average - this was excellent and the place has changed out of all recognition - would have no problem recommending the hotel to friends or family for a great Sunday lunch.
