What a disappointment , been lots of times before we even made special trips just to go to majors raved about it to family and friends but not any more I would be so embarrassed to take anyone there . Since the new owners took over its gone down bank at a rapid speed chips are greasy and chewy fish batter is soggy and curry sauce tastes powdery pie pastry hard and dry. This was our very last visit , unless they up there game I don't think they will be in business for much longer. So sad.

Never ordered before, and was told the food was lovely, it's not my fish wasn't cooked the chips were hard and cold I paid 34 pound and couldn't eat any of it im so upset

Visited Tuesday lunchtime but was disappointed with the quality of the chips. They were soggy, greasy, and mushy. Not what is normally served. The lady who served us was lovely, but the other two staff behind the counter were lifeless and ignorant. Maybe it was a one-off, but definitely, the quality of the chips was poor.

The the fish was awful not cod poor quality all round. Will never purchase fish from Majors again. Sad the ownership has changed as the quality of the fish also. Chips remain the same

The chips need to be more chunky. They look dead hardly looks like chips they look soggy.

Me and my partner fancied a chippy recently so I ordered on Uber eats & the chips were not the nicest I’ve had from here, most chips still had the peel on or were green-ish. I ordered two bags of chips & only one was sent too, and the size of the large bag nowadays is laughable, curry sauce was watery too unlike it’s usual consistency. Sometimes when I come here the food is lovely & is exactly like the nostalgic majors I remember from my childhood, other times the food is not up to standard, it really is hit and miss & depends what time you go. Another thing to add is specials are no longer on the menu, meaning you have to order everything separately and pay an arm and a leg and as I’ve said portions are very small nowadays. The roe for example is around £3 and a cone of chips is £3.80 on Uber eats, whereas they used to do specials such as roe, sausage and chips in a small tray, I’m not expecting them to be as cheap as they used to be but it just seems like daylight robbery.

Visited today for first time in quite a few years and was shocked to say at the prices and the portion sizes ! We had roe and cone of chips x 2 small mushy peas and two cans of pop £16.48 with a ketchup !!! The roe was so thin I was sooooooo disappointed in the roe for price of it such a rip off it was approx 1.5cm thick and that’s no exaggeration might not of even been that thick if I’m honest !!! The chips has lots of black eyes in them it wasn’t a pleasant experience at all !!! We were eating in and paid 60p extra for the pleasure but when we stood up noticed other customers had a plate but we wasn’t given that to eat ours off !!! I just think I would have been happier with the roe being a decent size and the chips all being edible for that cost to be fair !!! We will be coming to bilston more often for shopping as we enjoyed the market but will be seeking an alternative eating venue at that is way too expensive for us for what your given to eat !

If you are supposed to open at 11:30am then try opening on time instead of just standing and talking, when you have a queue of people outside. Waste of time

Oh my goodness. Best chippy ever. Only downside is I was with a friend who is in a wheelchair. There is no wheelchair access.

Was the first time coming since being took over and won't be coming back had fish and chips and a chicken and chips and the chips were absolutely horrible ended up putting them in the bin.

Best fish and chips in the world. Honestly a portion of chips that would have fed two people. The new line of milk shakes need some work but main attraction is outstanding

Normally come here once a week. But after today I’m so disappointed. Honestly there chips used to be amazing. But after today I won’t be visiting again. Chips were cold and tasted very hard. I ate 3 and threw the rest in the bin. Gutted. New owners need to learn how to cook!!! AVOID.

Absolutely awesome food me and my mate travelled from Birmingham.Because I told her how nice their fish +chips and its great to see some thing don't change ,Absolutely the best chipshop in the Midlands,well worth travelling for ,Unfortunately no wheelchair access. But definitely worth trying. SEE YOU SOON MAJORS 😊.

I was there nearly 15min and all the staff just ignored me I feel stupid all the customers are looking me because they are ignoring me not taking my order and I feel shame and I leave it from there that is absolutely wrong

Went here after the new owners take over, walked through the door and the ladies were the same as the ones I seen years before. Ordered fish and chips, was the same as before. A lazy fryer where all the food is waiting and this appears affects quality, the chips are ok but the fish is pale and uninspiring. This place has always had decent ratings but after going twice in about 2 years I can't see why, especially when Chaplin's is just down the road and Chaplin's is several times better. Major disappointment.

I normally love majors but the experience I had to day was absolutely horrific. Waited 10 mins for them to dish up 2 small cones of chips . Microwaved my curry sauce infront of me for it to still be cold curry jelly when I opened it a minute later , chips were greasy , chewy and stone cold and the service was absolutely dreadful. I normally love it here but I don't think I'll be going back.

We had lovely fish and chips here. Also tried the SFC, which was great too. The fish was cod, cooked to perfection. The portion was generous, we couldn’t finish it. Really nice and clean. Will definitely be returning.

When I visit the family in the Black Country I must have my orange chips fix , sadly this visit the chips were just warm and the cod row was cut very thinly , cut backs like this will only drive customers away .

the battered chips are just amazing. when the fryer opens and you see the golden goodness you know you are in heaven. the staff are a bit of a laugh too, great prices and the food is superb. I`m going there on my birthday. New owners still the same great battered chips and reasonably priced very pleased

AWFUL PAID £33 they gave me 3 kids sausage and chips instead of 3 jumbo sausage and large chips didn’t receive mini cod and chips also ordered curry and peas but got 2 curry’s complete wrong order no number works when trying to call them £33 for what a complete and utter shambles of an order chips were cold and won’t be ordering again to much errors! If they didn’t have the items they shouldn’t have taken the order……. If they did have the items their staff clearly cannot pack the orders correctly as this was a large order and received not even close to my order!!!!!! Avoid

I have been coming to this chip shop for 25 years. Since the new management I tried it out today and I can say for sure the chips do not taste the same as they have done! Even the after taste of the battered chips lol

Major's has been a part of my fish and chip eating history since I was a kid... and the food is still absolutely delicious! Those famous orange chips always hit the spot and the fish is so light and crispy with the batter... notwithstanding that the staff there are always so friendly and helpful! 😜✨️

Just been in here since the take over and I don't know if the owners are being cheap but they have changed the formula of the chips, it wasn't just myself that thinks that all the family does, if you're the owner I urge you to keep the formula of the chips that was given to you before the takeover or you will lose your customers.

The shop smells rancid like old chip fat and the food is vile, Greasy chips with too much batter, I am trying to understand what all the hype is about Major's its by far the worst in Wolverhampton. If you want quality take a trip to Newbridge Chippy off Tettenhall Rd its well worth the visit and you won't ever go back to Majors lol I live in Bilston and travel to Newbridge for my chips.

The food seemed alright at first despite small portions, although afterwards the aftertaste of old rancid oil was overwhelming and it made me feel quite sick for the rest of the evening. The worst part however was the service, we had to wait ages for them to fry up more chips after running out, which is weird for a chip shop on a Saturday evening. The premises was also absolutely filthy and very dated. The staff all seemed pretty miserable but I don’t blame them, working in somewhere as dirty as that. Overall, very disappointed. Looking at other recent reviews, it seems like this place has gone downhill recently. Avoid.

I haven't been to Majors for decades, and as everybody still raves about this place, I thought I would take a drive to Bilston and treat my family to some good old fashioned fish and chips on a Friday night. What a disappointment, 6.30pm on Friday night, the place had nobody in, the floors were filthy, there was hardly no food food available, no kebabs, and had to wait for fish and a battered sausage to be cooked, the staff looked a mess, no uniforms, they all looked dirty which resembles the restaurant and decor, I handed over £26 took my food home, the chips were soggy, greasy and not nice, the fish that was cooked and the battered sausage, was the only thing eaten, everything else was thrown away, the place used to be talk of the town, now its an embarrasment, close the doors and shut shop, theres far more better fish chip shops in that town and surrounding area

Went and had Monster Cod and Chips today, the Chips were fantastic orange battered chips. Really nice. The cod on the other hand, it was cooked perfect however it left me feeling sick as the oil needed to be drained, fish needs to rest for 10 minutes to let the excess oil drain off. This wasn't, I needed gaviscon after it, but it tasted nice which is strange, if they let it rest in the cabinet first then it would probably be nice. The staff member who dealt with me seemed nice and helpful Behind the counter looked a mess as chips on the floor, however the shop was busy and they were doing that much you can forgive the chips on the floor. Around 30 in the queue, that shows a sign of a good place. People willing to queue. The eat in part, the tables had food left, there is a bin but some idiots are above putting their left overs in the bin, 'not my job' people You have to pay 60p per meal to eat in, which for the price of what you pay, I can't see why, just greed really. Drinks are expensive, £1.25 for a fruit shoot, I saw people going to the nisa over the road and bringing drinks back The monster cod was easily a foot long by 6 inch wide. If you want a food challenge or a meal for two just buy that. Definitely worth a visit, but the owners lost two stars for the price of drinks, the 60p eat in cost and the cod oil making me feel sick Didn't see any vegetarian or vegan options, unless you have just chips, but they're probably cooked with fish and sausage Not gluten free either Batter is dairy free

For me, this is the place to have fish and chips, there's no where else that comes close. Really traditional, really unique to the black Country if not the UK because it's original and done right. My mouth was watering as I wrote this 😂 Edit - The staff are great here, direct and serve fast. Portions of Majors aren't huge, there are definitely bigger portions in other chip shops, however this is no nonsense proper food that is rich and filling, so you don't need that larger portion. As for price as of the date of this review, it's not much different to any other chippy

Best chips in the west midlands

Nice food but very ,very expensive. They have NO WASHING UP to do as cutlery goes in dishwasher . Paper cups for hot drinks and cardboard boxes for food . Disgraceful that they charge 60pence each to eat in floor very greasy and realy bad smell from toilets

The legendary Bilston chip shop rarely disappoints, went for classic fish and chips, great tasting iconic battered chips and a lovely piece of fish. Recommended anytime but even better on a rainy day.

I love the is chip shop half the time. It’s hit and miss, when their good their amazing but sometimes they aren’t. The prices are also very high these days. Such a shame, just with the food was always consistently good.

If you want fish/sausages/pie and chips, you’re covered here. Fish is really tasty and good size portion. Orange chips were tasty. Only problem was, we ordered a large portion and there wasn’t that many. Problem is that they don’t have much of a selection. No chicken kebab or fried chicken. Not many options. Place looks a bit tired too

Can be a bit hit n miss, when on form it is a heavenly experience but periodically it can be very average, i think this may be linked to who is doing the frying, they need some consistantcy and a good training program especially where the frying is concerned. Ladies out front are friendly and hard working. Prices are higher everytime i go in and this is becoming increasingly a rare treat these days. Just in on 13th july...shop just opened and they dont have chips ready..4 staff just chatting..been i q for 20 mins. 5 people walked out. Get a grip the owner...you can tell when you are not here as your staff really will kill your business. Atrocious service.

Went to Bilston for the first time in years walking past majors remembering when I went in as a kid and thought why not Walked in shop empty woman behind counter didn’t look at me carried on doing an order (all I wanted was a cone of chips) walked back and forth numerous times still no contact after 3/4 minutes gave up picked money back up off counter and walked out. Had to check that I wasn’t invisible when I got home in the mirror

What a lovely place for fish and chips having seen the Macmaster doing a review of the battered chips as we were in the area we just had to try. We went for the MONSTER cod and regular chips. What a feast all brilliant

Went to try the Orange Chips, which were very nice. However the cleanliness wasn't good. Chips all over the fryers, kebab skewer just resting on the floor. Half way through our order the woman serving walked to the door and shouted over her friends for a talk. Even though it didn't shut for 2 hours they weren't going to put anymore sausages in. Overall not a good experience.

Came in looking forward to some lovely orange chips, instead I was presented with beige potato mush. Chips had little red dots that looked like spots (weirdddd) brought a battered sausage (50p more) and batter just dropped off when touched it. Sausage was dry (super dry) charged 60p to sit in, I mean we paying for food (if you can call it that) and they charge us extra to eat it. Best part of this meal was 5 minutes later when I threw it back up tasted better coming out. Majorly disappointed I want my money back.

First came here on my 16th birthday and boy I was excited to try the food I had a large cod with chips and curry sauce and lemme tell ya best fish and chips I’ve ever had the battered orange chips are crunchy crispy and soft very nice and the fish well they could do better on the fish batter as it doesn’t stick on the fish well but nice fish in my opinion the curry sauce was smooth and a good taste to it I highly recommend this place

Shame can’t give 0 stars, went at 8 chips were being cooked fresh, got them back and was so much grease in the paper all the chips were that greasy they all had mushed together No choice of other options no sausages no kebab meat

Was very disappointed when I visited your shop last week , I had chips and curry sauce , the sauce was way too hot and thick also some of the chips that I found in the box was nice the rest was scratch ends and lots of batter bits in bottom of box and some this had black bite in them , was very disappointed , plus only 2 staff on when we were there at 1om the queue was to back of shop , so over all a very disappointing visit for me and my friend . They had pie and chips and chips was the same as mine . Plus the price which I can understand coz cost of living . But won't be visiting again . Sorry 😔😔

If you're a vegetarian don't eat the chips from there, they cook the chips in Beef Fat and not telling no one at all

Still good but has become quite expensive since my last vist. Over £9 for small fish chips and mushy peas and eating-in means you now eat out of a cardboard box and they no longer plate it up. Still the quality is unchanged.

First time here in many years and the last! Although the fish and chips were very good, the place could benefit from a deep clean. It looked and felt extremely dirty, with floors, walls, tables and chairs neglected. The bins (for customer's use) were overflowing onto the floor which in itself is a hazard..greasy floor. Behind the counter, again, food all over the floor. In my opinion it needs a visit from a health inspector! There were a couple of young mothers allowing their very young children free reign to throw food about, screeching whilst jumping all over the seats. Not a nice quiet lunch that we were looking forward to. Majors...you'll be shut before long if things don't improve. 😠

In my opinion, best fish and chips in Britain. Been going here since I was 14 (when I lived in Wolverhampton) I’ve moved to london and then Manchester and I always tell people about this place. The original orange chips.

Majors sells a unique type of chips that is worth visiting to try. It's not the most welcoming place in terms of diversity...nor has it ever been!!!🥴 so don't expect a customer friendly welcome. Just buy your chips and get out quickly.

I have used the Major chippy since it opened in the 70's, and I used it in the open week. I've used it on and off as I've moved in different places and still gone to the major's chippy,as my taste of childhood. This was the first time in a couple of years. Boy was I disappointed, gone are the battered orange chips and if you sit in you have a cardboard box to eat your meal.

Majors is a long standing fish and chip shop in Bilston. I've been going there for over 15 years now I believe. Even now their orange chips are unbeaten in my opinion, I've never had better than from here. In the future if I move out of the area, I'm still pretty confident that I'll be ensuring to pass by just to pick up a mini fish and chips with a can of Vimto.
