Ordered a takeaway. First (and last time) but the standard of food was truly terrible. The sweet and sour chicken cantonese style was probably the worst I’ve ever eaten and although I didn’t try the chicken green pepper black bean sauce my wife told me that it was of a similar standard. The spare ribs were inedible. Strongly recommend that you give this place a miss

Not a good welcome place empty duck chow main not edible staff never asked if every thing was ok . When walking to toilet could see in kitchen what a total mess chef sat down on phone when paying what over priced very expensive avoid don’t go there

Tonight we took 12 Cubs out for a meal to try some new food. Booking was easy and straightforward. Staff were brilliant at catering for one child's nut allergy and everyone enjoyed some really well cooked, tasty food. The duck was particularly commended as was the foo yung. The staff were really kind and helpful and several parents were so impressed they ordered take away for the rest of the family. The Cubs did indeed try (and loved) new dishes and had a wonderful time. Thank you!!

We were visiting Hereford for the day and fancied a Chinese for lunch, we came across the Golden River and noticed the lunchtime offer of 3 courses for £9 a head which seemed an excellent offer. Not sure why the place was empty other than ourselves, the food was delicious probably the best chicken and sweetcorn soup I have ever tasted and my partner thoroughly enjoyed his chicken noodle soup. For main course I opted for Sweet and Sour chicken and my partner had Prawn Curry, both dishes ( we shared ) were plentiful, hot and delicious. We both had banana fritters to finish, the batter coating was light and crispy and made a perfect ending to a lovely meal. The lady that served us was so nice, bringing us a map of the local area as we were unsure of where to find a shop we were looking for. We thought that the lunch was exceptional value and will definitely visit again when we are next in Hereford.

Picked up our takeaway last night, the sweet and sour sauce and curry sauce were cold the chicken was only luke warm and not crispy and chips totally inedible. Thus only goes to show the food was not fresh on the day. I did have chicken chop suey which was fine. I had too complain about a month ago as the sauce was like water and bland and the chicken was double cooked and burnt. They did give us a free sweet and sour. But now they have just lost a loyal customer as it is to expensive to throw in the bin. Will not be returning.

We have eaten here before. We noticed that prices have risen not a problem expected,but to remove the sweet from the set meal as well as raise prices isn't acceptable. Also disappointed in the sweet & sour chicken the sauce was that sour it was bordering on being inedible. Won't be going back again.

11pm on a saturday night, the place was empty. we found out why! the food was bland and poor quality. Minimal chicken in the chicken chow mein, curry sauce was very watery. cold rice, very greasy pancake roll. used to be great years ago but its really poor now. wont be going back. to be empty on a saturday night just shows how poor the food really is. also no atmosphere, no background music, blank walls.

Words fail me... I don't know where to begin! I should have realised that a quiet restaurant at lunchtime is a No-Go but needed a quick lunch for my family but i had no idea that this would simply be one of the worst meals i have ever had. Absolutely no atmosphere in the restaurant. Each course got progressively worse. Inedible sweet and sour chicken, raw chow mein noodles, luke warm rice and a banana fritter dripping in oil. Nothing had any flavour or seasoning- so bland and uninspiring 🤮 Never EVER again!

Stale inedible Prawn crackers or should that be Prawn sponges On a Friday night! Never seen so much oil in a pancake roll! No veg in the Special Fried rice, couple of mushrooms. Will not be back. Golden as all the food looks the same light brown Gravy.

We lived in Herefordshire for over 10 years and have spent the last 3 away but had to come for an appointment in Hereford, so thought let's go to the Golden River Chines Restaurant for lunch, as it was always so good. Well we both have to say that it was an awful lunch and sad to say we agree with the last reviewer that it was total PAP. It is so sad as it used to be good but maybe a change of ownership, change of chefs who knows. Sadly we will not be returning, when we go back to Hereford later this week.

got a Special Chow Mein takeaway. Been here before and it was OK then. Maybe the cook died since. Anyway, this time there was NO VEG except for canned/frozen bamboo shoots and the whole was covered in a gloopy sauce which didn't taste of anything much except sugar.

Ordered a Beef Satay which I've ordered 100 times before in other places. It was unrecognisable from any Beef satay I've had before. Didn't come with any vegetables and the sauce was thick brown sludge that didn't resemble a peanut flavour whatsoever. Horrible stringy bits of beef also. Just terrible. I didn't even let them know because I was so disappointed so I just left the plate barely touched. Sauce was also extremely sweet. Want to KFC after because I was starving. Much better experience.

Mediocre but edible, and anted to write a review as the terrible reviews here are unfair, but the 5 stars aren’t right either! There’s better Chinese take always in Hereford, Jasmine house or our preference is the wing sing.

Dived in here for a quick evening meal. The food was very disappointing. Had bbq ribs, very fatty and bbq sauce debatable. Beef mushroom appeared to have sliced roast beef from the supermarket stir fried into it and was swamped in a sort of soy sauce based ‘gravy’. Lacking in taste and texture, sadly no llove in this cooking from the kitchen.

Ordered a takeaway and the service was quick and the staff were extremely polite. Food was first class, and I would definitely recommend the Golden River.

Ordered in advance to collect .1 hour later still sat here waiting. If they don't cook until you pay why on earth do they not let you pay over the phone. Feel like I'll still be sat here at Christmas Awful Customer service 0

Just had a Chinese takeaway and I have to say the food was awful. Ordered sweet and sour chicken balls and mushroom and beef curry. Chicken balls actually came as a whole piece of overcooked chicken with thick soggy batter hacked into pieces. The curry didn't taste like curry with soggy mushrooms and bitty pieces of beef.

Went with two friends, to say the food was poor quality is an understatement. Some dishes way too salty and some of the meat was just awful. When I mentioned it to who I presumed was one of the owners she just looked at me like I had horns coming out of my head. The chicken especially was not right, it was like slimy and with no taste to it. Will never go back there again even if it is one of the few Chinese that is open in Hereford on a Tuesday night.

Absolutely shocking quality of food & service… None of the dishes we ordered were as described. The chicken, pork and beef dishes we ordered only contained mechanically separated meat (MSM), they had the look and texture of peddegre chum. Sweet and Sour chicken was basically a lump of MSM covered with a sauce that gave off a smell of overpowering vinegar. Cold egg fried rice without any egg, a dish called sizzling squid & king prawns was served up with just two prawns and one tiny piece of a squid’s tentacle. Toilets were dirty and neither the men’s nor ladies had any toilet seats. The staff were miserable and unwelcoming they took our order, served our food then sat like mannequins in a weird trance like state until we asked for our bill. The atmosphere in the restaurant was on par with a mortuary.I won’t be going back…

Our normal choice of Chinese Takeaway has closed so after trying a few & really not being that happy with what we got, we tried the Golden River, I have to say that this is now my No1 Chinese in Hereford, food ready at advised time, really nice taste & quality , highly recommend.

Have eaten in there and from there twice. The first time was a dinner experience and although the food was OK the bottle of wine for just around fifteen quid made the experience acceptable! We tried the set dinner and there was way too much food and took aa large doggy bag home. My partner thought she'd treat us recently and the food was incredibly OVERSALTED! SO SALTY WE could not eat it! Yuck.... our search for good Chinese food in Hereford continues....

I personally think the food is over salted to add taste to a mediocre food but my wife loves one dish in particular which makes me happy because she is. When I come home to visit family in Hereford I try to visit before leaving and take home for our tea ( reheated of course!! ) I have had a sit down meal here and it's OK, the owners ( the staff ) are not overly friendly, but there are far worse places to eat. For this region of food, nothing really beats it in this area

We went to the golden river on the spur of the moment. The hosts welcoming was good. Although the restaurant missing Chinese ambience. My Starter spare ribs for 2 was brilliant. crispy Duck and Ricewas beautifully cookedSadly the girls Prawn cocktail came on a Plate and awkward to eat, much easier in a dish. They weren’t that impressed with the chow mien or chicken Maryland. Starter, Main and a drink each cost £36 for 4. £9.00 each very reasonable. If Just me I’d go back again tomorrow but don’t think I could convince the girls.

We were in the area and Hereford was only ten minutes away, so decided to look for some Chinese food. On the map, this place was the closest to where we were, and it was open quite early just before 6pm. We ordered the chicken in orange sauce, homestyle tofu, prawn fried rice, and vermicelli noodles. As we were the only ones there, apart from the takeaway customers, it didn't take long for our food to be served. The food was not bad, and fairly priced.

Teníamos un coche después de tener muchos sitios comidas y fue tan buena, de hecho, fue el mejor. Algunos dijeron que el cuerpo no como un todo pechuga de pollo rellenos, así los miembros de nuestro grupo que de esta manera muy superior a la de pollo. pelotas Me refiero a esta era de pollo fresco y delicioso. Nuestro huevo frito arroz también era delicioso como las patatas fritas. Las salsas que teníamos era increíble, de hecho todo era impecable. El mejor lugar para comer comida china.

Vine para una comida para llevar mientras en mi camino a casa desde el hospital. Pedimos la comida y como no estaba lleno, en efecto, nadie estaba comiendo, llegó bastante rápido. Llegamos a la casa y dan mi comida, me quedé muy decepcionada. Mi dulce y agria pollo como toda una corte de pechuga en trozos, nunca he tenido antes. Estaba lleno de grasa y el bateador era como algo que había sido remojadas varias veces, simplemente, no podía comer comer. Mi arroz no tenía sabor y nos sentimos bastante clumpy, sin huevo en absoluto, lo que estaba bien eran las patatas fritas. Así que fuimos en bin, pollo arroz fuimos en bin y yo pasamos hambre. Nunca se vuelva, tan solo de pensar que hace mi estómago churn.

Good food at good prices and it is plentiful. What more can I say, they'll even pack up your left overs as a take away.

Propina en aquí en una noche lluviosa, sorprendentemente no desean conseguir wetter! ¡Qué hallazgo, muy moderno por fuera y por dentro. De hecho, este establecimiento es fácil perderse ya que no tienen "Tipo neón" fuera. Es una calle muy transitada, así que quizás no son permitidos. De todos modos, la comida era de primera categoría. Creo que es un restaurante familiar, y se notaba. Excelente menú además de unas cervezas, etc. si te gusta. Tenía carne salteado con salsa de alubias negras, por lejos la mejor que he probado. Era temprano, así que me sirvieron muy rápido, pero luego restaurantes chinos normalmente hacer esto.

Dios mío este chino era increíble absoluta delicioso. Y una excelente relación calidad-precio. La comida era tan tan bueno, sabroso y abundante. Otras personas han comentado que no están siendo hermoso chino que niñas en traje tradicional son lo planeta. Honestamente puedo decir que nunca he estado en un restaurante chino en Herefordshire que tenía camareras que no lleve ropa tradicional y de todos modos no hace ninguna diferencia para la comida de todos modos. Un comentario estúpido. Pero si te gusta la comida china mejor curry excelente de siempre, y las patatas fritas caseras prueba preciosa. Fantástico lugar para comer

Este restaurante chino que tan buena, la comida es deliciosa. Una excelente comida a un precio muy razonable. Todo servido juntos y muy caliente y sabrosa. El curry vetable mejor que he comido nunca y patatas fritas increíble. Un muy buen lugar para comer si vas en Hereford para nosotros impecable.

La gran cocina china y relación calidad-precio raciones son abundantes y es la mejor comida china que he tenido muy sabroso así que me alegro de que fui por esto en lugar de India.

I've been a customer of the Golden River for longer than I care to remember. Takeaways are lovely and take a reassuringly long time to prepare. Eating in has also been a good experience - I have always been waited on swiftly and courteously. This is a very under-rated restaurant in my opinion.

Went into this restaurant for a real simple menu meal. What I was served made me wish I had never gone to this location to purchase chicken ball's.The amount of oil that came out of food was enough to make me think why oh why did I bother. The other problem with these chicken balls was the amount of crispy batter and that this medd were chicken breast cut up. Never again will I ask this restaurant to supply me with food.

Went on New years eve for a meal with friends. Most impressed with the food as were the rest of our group. The chicken and sweetcorn soup was lovely and the prawn toast to die for. I had the most delicious Chinese lamb hotpot for mains and drank some lovely medium white house wine. Oddly a 250ml glass of house wine was £4 and yet a bottle was £12.50. The egg fried rice wasn't the best, as far as I could see it didn' have any egg in it. That was my only little gripe though. The waiters were great and the food was piping hot.The lamb in my hotpot was plentiful and succulent. I was surprised at how quiet the restaurant was but it didn't spoil our enjoyment. Will be going again soon. The restaurant was very large and anonymous looking but what the heck. The food was excellent and the service good.

We had a takeaway after working late in Hereford center and thought the food was great!! Very tasty. The restaurant looked really clean and tidy we should have eaten in really but maybe next time.

Cant understand why the place has gotten so many bad reviews ????..been going here for years and have tried both takeaway and sit in. On all occasions the food has been to a good standard and hot. And for the record they do the best beef curry and chips ;)...fact!! ;)

Sweet & sour chicken .... made of vinegar, the fumes burnt my retinas so it was no surprise that it tasted horrendous. Egg fried rice without egg. The vegetable curry was nice and so was the chicken and cashew nuts (but to be fair she had drank a couple of bottles of prosecco first). Our party of 8 all concurred the sweet and sour wasn't fit for human consumption. When we asked for the bill we mentioned that the sweet and sour wasn't nice and it was just like vinegar and no sweet - the owner was extremely rude and refusedTo acknowledge the feedback stating they had plenty of other customers (2 others in the room) and everyone liked their food it was meant to be sour he was raising his voice and being very rude to us. Still, the bill was only £50.20 for 8 people so if you go on price and don't care what the food tastes like this May be for you. My only consolation was that my mate vommed in their toilets.

I visited this restaurant back in May while visiting family. We went quite late on a Friday in a party of about 7. I ordered a sweet and sour dish, and was extremely dissatisfied. The sauce had an overpowering taste of vinegar to the point that it was actually impossible to eat. Although not all of the food was this bad, none of it was good! The atmosphere was lacking and the restaurant itself was fairly unclean. This is also the first Chinese restaurant I've come across that has salt and vinegar on the tables - trust me, no one needs the extra vinegar!

I come here several times a year when I feel like a good sit down Chinese meal. I have yet to have a bad meal here and the service is good and fast. I usually order the beef chow mein, egg fried rice and chips which is always great value as it tastes great, there is a lot of it and it is cheap. I have also tried several curry dishes as well as the chop suey and it has all been good. The only problem I have with this place is the lack of atmosphere and it could do with some traditional Chinese music playing in the background since it is quiet in there, it is very easy to hear other people's conversations from across the room. So some music would be great.So overall it is a great place and would recommend it.

Yes the food is plainly presented - no frills.but actually the taste &quality of the food is very good. Restaurant could not be called stylish - it's functional and clean though as I suspect the kitchen is.Have recommended to friends and family who agree and go back.Sweet and Sour chicken is a favourite for some - curry for other. Not so keen on the chips myself but I love the battered tiger prawns - lovely light batter and prawns not rubbery in the slightest.well done golden river get someone in to style your restaurant and help with the food presentation and that will convince those who judge purely on appearance.

We visited this restaurant yesterday lunchtime. My sister and nephew ordered from the set lunch menu but I ordered from the main menu.The restaurant was neat and tidy but we were the only customers for the duration of our visit.We all had a spring roll for starter. It was served alone, there was no decoration on the plate but it tasted fine and was not too greasy.To follow, I had ordered special chow mein. I stressed that I did not want a dish cooked in fat and as I love crispy vegetables, bean sprouts, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots I thought this would be a good choice. He assured me he would tell the chef I wanted no oil.The meal arrived. The noodles were very dark in colour and greasy. The vegetables were soggy and uncrisp, but the worst part was it appears there was what looked like sunday lunch gravy poured all over the dish! This gravy was sweet and awful. I spooned as much as I could off my plate and then asked for another clean plate to transfer what was left. I took a couple of mouthfuls but just could not eat it. I told the waiter it was dreadful but he said they had been cooking it like that for 30 years! I did think to say, this could be why we were the only diners but resisted. My nephew ate his curry which he said was average. My sister also had chow mein, the chicken variety which meant she did not have the 'special' gravy poured over. She ate a few more mouthfuls that me, but said it too was the worst Chinese she had ever tasted. The bill arrived and I was charged for the dish I did not eat. I will never enter this establishment again. It was a truly awful experience!!

It was a hot and sunny evening in September (2nd) when my friend suggested going for a Chinese and a gossip. Usually, we gossip at the Indian as we love Indian food. But today we fancied a change. I have recently started on a high protein diet, so was worried about splashing the cash on food that does not come into my planned diet. So I thought to be on the safe side I will order the duck and pancakes. Anyhoo, we rocked up to the Golden River, excited for our Chinese. Please don't expect to rock up to a fancy restaurant and expect to have beautiful Chinese girls with pins in their hair taking your order. Instead, as soon as we walked through the door we were spotted by a grumpy looking man who before we could even get a word in, pointed to a table at the back of the 'restaurant' and said there, there. What surprised me most about this was how he assumed we had come to eat in, and not order a take away. Anyway, we sat down at a table for four people, at the back of the room. My friend had said it is really cheap here, so I was hoping this was the case, without compromising the quality of the food. The menu looked promising, offering all the usual things you would expect to see on a Chinese menu. However, I could not find duck and pancakes on the menu, nor could I find spring rolls. I decided to go with the crispy duck option, a chicken and sweet corn soup and a vegetable spring roll.Whilst taking our order the man who had pointed to our table and who was not looking particularly smart with his shirt hanging out, rushed us through our order like he was in some sort of a hurry. This gave me the impression that they were running some sort of conveyor belt service, but in fact the restaurant only had about 6 other customers in it. As the waiter scribbled down our order saying 'Yes' after each thing, he then attempted to hurry away without taking our drinks order. My friend quickly called him back and we placed our order, again in a hurry. Don't expect any sort of introduction, like his name, the specials today, candles on the table or anything like that. This is a very very basic type of restaurant. A while later our drinks arrived, followed by our food a little while after that. The lady who brought them out was quite old, dressed in what appeared to be her 'day off' clothes. She forget to bring out the chips that my friend ordered, so when my friend asked about this and they were eventually brought out, ten mins later, the grumpy waiter also brought over another pile of chips, asking if we had ordered chips :-s upon saying no, he then went around the other tables, asking everyone else if they had ordered chips. He then gave up and took them back to the kitchen in a huff. I get the feeling that staff moral is low here and they have very limited job satisfaction. When my crispy duck arrived, it was not so crispy, and was swimming in a pool of hoi sin sauce. I do like hoi sin sauce but I really was hoping for just crispy duck :-/ never mind. It was cooked quite well. The sorting roll on the other hand....I was expecting a small, vegetable spring roll. But this was a beast, and I certainly could not at it all myself! It was also swimming in saturated fats. So I stopped after a few mouthfuls as I could imagine myself having to cycle to France and back just to work off the calories in this. If you a greasy food fanatic though this would be right up your street. The chicken and sweet corn soup, I can't complain. One of the best I have tasted. Overall I have to say that the quality of food did not appear too bad. From what we had ordered. But the service here is terrible, and the paper table clothes made me feel like I was at a children's party every time it brushed against my arm whilst trying to eat. We were there for about an hour or so, and not once did anyone come to ask if everything was Ok with our food, or take another drinks order. Upon paying, we left the table before any of our plates had been collected, and went to pay. The grumpy waiter quickly did a calculation on his little calculator so we could split the bill. He then grumbled "10 pound 10 pen" took our money and we left. No good bye or thank you. Will we return here again? Possibly. But there are plenty of other restaurants to try. So will definitely be trying elsewhere before considering returning here again.

I should have known when I walked in - I was the only person eating on a Friday lunchtime!First taste of the spare ribs suggested an unusual ingredient combination. The meat on the first rib was tough and gristle and inedible. Others were at least consumable, but very poor. Sweet and sour chicken HK style just so poor compared even to the average take-away. Rice too moist and looked and tasted unappealing.Low point - food, second low point was the attention of the fly throughout the meal, although, to be fair, there was no one else for it to annoy. Decor unappealing. Dry white wine was not dry. But the high point - the wine is cheap.

Great service, only took 10 min for meal to arrive. Food was of a good standard. Would definitely recommend especially at midnight after a few pints.

Recently had a meal here for the first time since the relocation. In the previous location it was a place to go when the clubs closed for a take out so was always too drunk to form an opinion. Now that I have sat down for a meal I realise inebriation is key. Possibly the saltiest and greasiest Chinese meal ever. The lights are too bright and there is no background music. My vodka & diet coke was served in a wine glass and the service was pretty miserable. It was reasonably priced but I would have quibbled if charged any more. If you want to sit and eat cheap greasy food in a brightly lit atmospheric vacuum then this is the place to be. Not if you want an evening of ambience.

'The River' Is not a place for a romantic meal since it does paper tablecloths. I know why they do paper tablecloths though, as it's a prime venue for post drinking fodder. The staff are lovely, very tolerant of people who can barely remember their own name, nevermind order a chinese meal and the food is great!

Popular Chinese restaurant. Food was very good. Hadn't been since they moved. Hum ming gardens is probably better value and of a similar quality.

Whenever I visit family in Hereford, I tend to eat at the Golden River at least once. The food is always good and the portions big. Best of all, the bill surprises me every time by being so reasonable.A little music (classical or Chinese, not pop) in the background would help with ambience, but that's the only negative.

We didnt even make it to the resturant and they put us off completly!!!! I made a phone call to the resturant to find out when they would be open, their telephone manner was horrible and they were completly unhelpful. They couldnt have put us iff more if they had tried, they didnt seem to be wanting new custom!

Me and all my friends went out for a dinner one Saturday and we had a lovely dinner. We all really enjoyed it and it was cheap as well. And the people are really polite to you too. Would like to go there again.

I used to love the old upstairs Golden River. My first time back since moving back to herefordshire. It was awfull!!!!! All 6 dishes tasted exactly the same. However im pretty sure none of them were supposed to taste like Heinze BBQ Sauce. The service was non-existent, we had to ask for our order to be taken twice. And the lady who bought our food was wearing her outside coat with something down the front of it. The restaurant however was clean, but this did little to help the rest.Left without eating even half the food. Very dissapointed.

Very nice meal with the family.I recommend the sizzling plate varieties.Only drawback..The dirty glasses with lipstick around the rim.

Not bad provincial Chinese restaurant. (But they put malt vinegar bottles on the tables for God's sake!) Nice crispy duck.

The blinds that appeared recently now prevent night time diners being exhibits in an aquarium! Very minimalistic design however and the place has lost all the charm it had in the old upstairs venue. Not recommended on the basis of its new location and vast window frontage onto the street. I dunno how Gary ended up being served 'Indian' (see review below)
