Golden Pheasant in Carlisle

Service brilliant from start to finish. Food was also brilliant- very tasty, plenty of it and hot. Salmon and garlic prawns particularly good. Very cosy atmosphere on a chilly day.

Called in for a Sunday Roast. Very friendly welcome from the staff. Both of us ordered roast turkey, which was very tasty. A good-sized portion with plenty of vegetables and proper roast potatoes and Yorkshire Pudding. Too full for dessert this time, but hope to try them on another day. Only slight criticism would be that we both seemed to get different vegetables and the food was hot but could have been a bit hotter.

Staff and the pub restaurant are brilliant hotel rooms are old and in need of tlc and noisy all night from ventilation from the pub shame really cold be a lot better

Used to be a nice, gourmet pub. Went today, and while the prices (at least £19 for most mains) still reflected this, the food absolutely did not. Squid came with evidently out-of-date lettuce that was discoloured, and the squid was terrible and chewy, straight from the freezer. Messy chips had the dryest beef I’ve ever tasted and the cheese tasted fowl. Had to pay at bar as servers had forgotten about us. The coke was clearly watered down and flat. Seems like there must be new management that do not care whatsoever about the standards, yet continue to charge prices of a high end pub. Same food standard as Wetherspoons and yet charged extortionate prices. Will never return and i encourage everyone else to avoid, shameful.

Dropped in for lunch. All good except potatoes served with chicken schnitzel were cold. Had obviously been precooked and fleetingly warmed in a pan. When young waitress told about the issue the answer was ‘l’ll tell the kitchen’, nothing happened so l spoke to her again. Her answer was ‘l told the chef’. So l was left with cold potatoes. When paying at the bar l mentioned the issue to another waitress who said again ‘l’ll tell the kitchen’ so seems to be what the staff are instructed to say when a food complaint is made. Not good enough really. We live locally but won’t be back.

Went for Christmas Eve dinner with my wife & five kids, from the second we walked through the door all staff were great, welcoming & attentive to the kids. Drinks were served promptly, food was really excellent quality, even the kids which is often overlooked. Special thanks to Alex who bailed us out with some Christmas crackers for the kids!

Had a family Xmass get together tonight , what a wonderful place , sat by the wood burner [ very cosy] food excellent , staff very friendly and efficient . will return in the near future . p.s as the train station is just a stones throw away , will be useing the train so i can sample there ales . so will review again in the near distant future. best wishes for the holidays

Waited more than 1 hour for starters.table booked for 12.15 and started arrived by 13:35. Informed our ticket had been forgotten. Starters were rushed. The accompanying toast for the pate still in its bread form. When the main turned up the only hot item was the roast potato. Absolute shambles. 2 hours wasted on cold food

My wife and I stayed at the Golden Pheasant on 6th and 7th August 2024 as our son was getting married at the Oak Tree of Peover on 7th August. We had other friends and family who also stayed at the Golden Pheasant and the accommodation was very good. The pub itself was very nice and the food was excellent 👌 staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay and could not do enough for us. We also received vouchers whilst there which was a nice gesture 👍. Would certainly recommend 👍

I had a lovely meal at this pub/restaurant. The staff were friendly and the food was good. The pub has a wonderful patio and spacious beer garden with a summer house and children's play area. It is a beautiful, rural setting.

A good summer lunchtime visit. Big garden área that kids were enjoying. Pleasant sandwich - very good ham but bread was disappointing. Would visit again.

Nicely kept clean and not too bad a service

Hoping for a lovely family meal, it fell far short of expectations. I have never seen a more anaemic looking caesar salad and the 'tower burger ' was more like a bungalow. I ordered 2 bottles of sauvignon blanc and received 1 bottle of pinot grigio. Very disappointing.

We had a lovely weekend stay, the room had nearly everything we needed ,you do have to share an iron and ironing board, with other guests. but the staff are very helpful and happy at all times.The breakfast is very good and we had some lovely evening meals, and the Sunday Roast was delicious and very popular with the locals.The location is easy to get to in a very pretty village, and is very popular with families, it has a very large beer garden and park area for children. But there is also quite area's to sit for couples without children. Inside there are several seating areas some with log fires very cosy and comfortable.

My friend and I stayed here on Thursday evening after a cancelled flight from Liverpool which was supposedly to be rescheduled from Manchester on Fri. From the moment we arrived the staff could not have been any more attentive and helpful. We were shown to our room which was lovely, a decent size, such a comfortable bed, top notch bedding and great, powerful shower. We had a few drinks outside in the gorgeous surroundings then decided on dinner. The food was excellent, both had mackerel pate, served with toast and salad garnish to start followed by the smaller rump steak and all the trimmings. Again this was lovely. The staff told us not to miss breakfast as it was really good. They weren't wrong ! Quality produce, served piping hot and plenty of it. Sadly our flight was once again cancelled so we headed home. The disappointment was masked by the staff, once again being so friendly and helpful. I honestly don't think we have been anywhere and been greeted with such lovely people. We will definitely return for food and an overnight stay. Looking forward to trying the Sunday lunch and of course the breakfast again. Keep doing what you are doing, it's not often you find a hidden gem like this.

Great cheese and onion pie .. highly recommended

Two of us had an outstanding meal here recently. We had Steak & Ale Pie & Trout & Garlic Bread with Cheese as a side & all elements were cooked well & tasted superb. The two JW Lees ales were kept very well although too cold. Service from three female staff members ( particularly Charlotte) was very good on a busy Tuesday evening & we shall definitely return.

For those doing the Plumley ale trail, the Golden Pheasant is the first pub on the list. Located virtually in the middle of nowhere, it is a short two minute walk from the train station. The staff were all very polite, friendly and professional. The drinks were reasonably priced, and I would personally recommend the J W Lees Original. The food was OK. I had the fish and chips, which was a fairly large portion. It filled a hole, but I would say it wasn't as good as my local chippy. However, the cheese pie was highly rated by those who tried it. The pub is kid friendly and very popular for groups and parties. There is free cost of parking here and a wheelchair accessible entrance.

Room could do with being lighter/updated, lighting improved. Walk in shower rather than step over bath as was unable to get in and out, a deep clean very necessary. Bedding was clean and white. Matress comfy, would be hot in summer as only two small windows which were desperate to he cleaned along with the frames. Room very tired. We struggled carrying suitcases up and down stairs as no lift or offer of help.

Only one non alcoholic beer available- not very enterprising. Nowadays people want more zero choices if they drive or are on medication.

We stayed two nights at The Golden Pheasant, the service was absolutely fabulous. I couldn't fault it at all. All staff did their very best to make our staff comfortable and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend a stay here.

A brief stop for a drink after a friend's funeral. Not enough time to eat before having to catch train home.

Popped in for the lunchtime menu. Good food at reasonable prices. Attentive staff. Well kept real ale.

A perfect stay! Room was a good size, the service was fabulous and so was the food. Great railway links too as the train station is just across the road.

Ordered the steak and ale pie. Got a slice of pie smaller than a dairylea triangle. No chunky chips left, a few peas. Gravy was cold and had to ask for it to be warmed. So for £16.45 was a particularly poor meal, we won’t be going back.

Beautiful country hotel with period style accommodation and friendly excellent service. I booked through an app and turned up at the last minute, but was received a friendly welcome, and was provided with an excellent supper in-spite of missing the set meal hours. The room was spacious with a very comfortable four poster in the period style with a pleasing selection of hot drinks provided. After a good sleep, an excellent breakfast was offered. Altogether a very enjoyable experience.

Had a dripping pipe under a floorboard keep me awake most of the night, free wifi is so bad I was lucky if it just connected, floors in the room creaking like crazy everywhere you walk and a neighbour who had his cell phone alarm going off for more than an hour. Overall the venue is not bad but the niggles made it a bad experience.

Used to LOVE coming here as a kid and enjoyed the playground/bowling green area - it’s been beautifully updated and we can’t wait to enjoy it in the summer! The inside is so lovely and cosy, flowing to a beautiful open area with large windows that leads outside. I can’t recommend this place enough, it’s the perfect combination of coziness in the countryside, with smiley, friendly staff!

This was a superb mid-week lunch sitting by a warm fire in cosy and comfortable surroundings. The welcome was warm and immediate, the menu detailed and the food fully lived up to expectations. Above all, the service was excellent - a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience.

Where for an afternoon lunch and the selction was great, service was excellent and the food was perfect and well priced . I would highly recommend this place.

The Golden Pheasant goes the extra mile and you will struggle to find better value combined with excellent service. The Rooms are well equipped with even little coffee cafeterias. I used it for business and it was perfect

Went with a party of 8 as we have been here previously. First time I have a Sunday roast. Not sure how the bottomless gravy works as we only got one jug when asking after the food was served though that may be how it works. Minor quibble aside, the roast was one the best I have had for a long time. We had the sharer for 2 and we were not disappointed. Definitely worth a revisit. The staff were friendly as well.

Lovely country pub with real ales. Disappointed that the staff kept serving an ale after it had been pointed out that it tasted of vinegar and had gone off.

Had a meal on Sunday served by the lovely Amy who welcomed us with a smile. So much so we decided to pop in for a coffee the next day due to our train being cancelled. Again Amy was there with the same lovely manner. Definitely recommend.

Location wise this pub is perfectly located as the train station is literally a 1 minute walk, one stop and you are in Knutsford a beautiful town with cafes / restaurants and boutique style shops , wonderful! Our service was impeccable from start to finish , reception greeting fantastic and bar staff especially AMY was just incredibly professional / courteous / helpful and much more … thank you Amy for all your help to make the 2 days stay special. The manager was fantastic as we had a puncture and he assisted with the help in getting us back on the road, again thank you. Suella again just fantastic! Thank you … By the way the sunday roast here is the best I’ve ever had so a massive compliments to the chef ! Absolutely fantastic food here …well done chef ! Beers wise again a very large selection , a massive pub with a massive garden to accommodate, excellent size for any situation. Went for a Sunday roast to celebrate my partner's mother's eightieth. Food was verygood and the service was excellent. All of us enjoyed our meals and if in the area would visit again.

Very pleasant dining experience with family. Food and service were both great and the staff were friendly.
