Golden Fry Fish and Chips Shop in Sunderland

This is the second time me and my partner have ordered from here the first time we ordered for delivery and they changed the price when they arrived at the door and just never thought anything of it and we have just tried to order again tonight they took forever to answer the phone then when they took our order they couldn't even tell us how much the food was they said it was between 20 and 25 something then hung up the phone and when we tried to ring back they just were not picking up the phone disgusting behaviour from the staff feel like they were trying to rip us off to be honest

Absolutely terrible service ! Rude staff. Will never use them again! Swearing at my child. Disgusting behaviour

This is for a delivery order, doesn’t let me add a review elsewhere, I usually order from this place at least once a week but whenever there is a problem with the food their attitude stinks and tonight is the last straw, 2 nights in a row ive ordered, last night they wouldn’t answer their phone and stupidly I placed another order tonight and when it was exactly the same as last night I did actually get in touch to be told never to order from them again, no one else complains which I know is a lie as there is a Facebook page and obviously here. The management is a joke for this place. I’ll never order from them again. Feel sorry for the ppl who work for them

Not so good. All-male staff sullen, never a smile or acknowledgement of a customer. Chips soft to the point of being soggy. Batter on fish patchy and lacking crispness. Won't be going there again.

Ordered a take away off just eat as staying In hotel near by. Positive was food was delivered quick and it was piping hot. Pizzas were okay, nothing special. Battered sausage and burger were okay. The chips were not cooked no where near enough and the curry sauce was like water

Really rude staff, placed a order for £30 for 2 kebabs one small tikka and chips and one portion of chips I asked for lettuce on my chicken tikka and chips and she told me I wasn’t allowed very rude no social skills what so ever, the food was alright but the small tikka and chips was a very small portion with about 6 chips and cost £5.30 will not be returning because the way the lady spoke to us was very rude.

Went in and placed an order for a special offer, asked for salad to be separate on the Donna kabab, told I couldn’t. I’d asked the women at the counter for no mushrooms on my pizza as I am allergic, she told the guy making the pizza no mushrooms, I looked and repeated no mushrooms just to be certain of this. I arrived home to find mushrooms in my pizza! When phoning up the store the women answering didn’t know what to say or do, after speaking with someone else she come back to say if I went back with the pizza they would change it over, I’d asked if it was possible for this to be delivered so that I could eat the rest without it going cold while coming for the pizza she said yes with a fee of £3.00 without asking my address. Having explained this is not my fault why should I be made to pay more, she comes back to say I didn’t tell her no mushrooms so they are claiming I am a liar. I was disgusted with such customer service I said it didn’t matter and ended the call. I will never be returning. To top it off the pizza was burnt and the kabab was dripping in grease which caused the pitta to be soaking too. Food and service 0/10!

We ordered at 630 for delivery at 730 yes its good friday but by 815 rang to be told it would be 15 to 20 mins by 9pm hr and half after delivery time i had to cancel my food befor going to start 12 hours shift thanks for nothing no great apology just no proble i refund no sorry can we do anything to help our great service not great customer service not and great food i wouldn't no i never got it oh sorry i did get nock on door hour and half after delivery time sent back i needed to go to work

Been here twice in the last week both times the chips were undercooked and some still hard in the middle. The chicken kabab was nice and the fish cakes had minimal fish in very disappointed

We phoned through for an order to two large cod and two large chips. We went to pick up the food. We were met by the most miserable people you could ever find in a shop (possibly mother and daughter?). No greetings, no life or soul to the shop. No smiles. One word answers to questions, e.g. when we asked if we could pay with cash or contactless card - 'cash'. No 'bye, see you again' or any sort of human contact. I know jobs are hard to come by but they could have at least pretended they were interested. We will not be going back there again.

Over the years I have used the golden fry I can honestly say this is the best fish and chips I have ever tasted the people have had this fish and chip shop since the 1970s the quality has never changed the fish is always cooked to perfection the batter is light and tasty and the fish are always large the chips are done to perfection no white and stuck together like a lot of places try it you will not be disappointed

Having used this shop for the last 10yr can say this will be my last Delivery last week 1hr 30mins This week 1hr 50 mins after having been quoted 45mins don’t mind shops putting prices up in the current climate but the standard of food has reduced dramatically, 2x pizzas warm and soft obviously been cooked for a while and chips absolutely atrocious over cooked and burnt, I have recommended this shop to so any people over the yrs but not anymore, how can a shops quality decline so quick,

Iv had a few pizzas and they are absolutely delicious, iv had them from various take aways and these are the best, also had fish and chips and they are huge portions well worth the money

The staff are miserable and the portion sizes are Pathetic for what you’re paying. I would not visit again.

Nice food but a comment on here is quite factual. The staff are miserable although that don’t affect their good ... but would be nice for them to be sociable and chat to their customers instead of looking at them as if they’re simple.

I’ve ordered for delivery and collection, over the phone and on the website on numerous occasions and it’s always been nice and hot, well cooked and presented and a generous serving. Would recommend the cheesy chips and garlic

Always go here if I'm having a take away food always nice staff also friendly nothing is a problem when I've been also had deliveries from here never had a problem

Anybody that has put a negative review on here has obviously never been to this chip shop. Food is always fresh, go there every Saturday without fail, and the fish and chips are consistently very good

On the web site the opening times of business is incorrect, several times we’ve visited and it says it’s open, however when we visited they say it’s closing in 20min and refused to put a fish in. The staff are miserable especially the female, which is sad as the food has been of good quality but you still need customer service.

Excellent pizzas , phone your order in and collect in 15 minutes . Fresh pizza with plenty of filling .

What a set of miserable staff who work there you would think they had lost a tenner and found a quid and the portions are small , also very expensive stay away

Papas en para el almuerzo. Todo estaba recién preparado y bien preparado. 4 de nosotros tuvimos 2 montones de peces, golpeadas y queso empanadas de salchichas. El pescado donde enormes y la salchicha queso tamaño donde ridículamente. Se lo recomendaría a cualquiera. El único problema era el tamaño de las fichas, pero después de todo no era una queja masiva.

For me this is the best fish and chip shop. They also do great pizzas all fresh. It's always busy which proves how nice the food is.

As always lovely food. I have never had a bad service or food from here. The size of the portions are very good and quality is excellent. Lovely batter. I would recommend this takeaway

Always go here for my fish and chips ..always fresh fish and you get a big fish .. The kids meals are spot on as well ..every thing from here is spot on

Cold chips, cold pies, cold mushy peas, if you can call them that. Missable staff, it's like they've done you a favour opening up !!!

Fui por primera vez contra mis instintos cuando vi no tantos buenos comentarios sobre el establecimiento, el personal era muy amable y aún más importante es que la comida era excelente y nos fuimos a un precio razonable. Recomiendo encarecidamente este hotel a cualquiera que esté buscando una cena rápida pero sabrosa comida, de esta manera se puede disfrutar por completo de la fantástica comida ofrece lo tienen a diario.

Really fancied some chip shop chips and got large bag for £1.80 there was less than you normally get in a chip butty and they were pale and not very tasty the staff seem ignorant like your a nuisance for bothering them, my polite manner was not matched by the staff. I won't be returning.

iv never had a smaller kabab deliverd in my live it was not worth half the money take my advise and go some were else like i will be from now on.

Sunderland born and bred, the Prospect fish and chip shop (Whillians' Fish Suppers) was always my second favourite after Harry (can't remember the surname) in Silksworth. I left the area many years ago, but my parents still live in Sunderland, and every time we visit, we always come back here for fish and chips. Although the ownership has changed from the Whillians' days, to me the batter (one of the attractions of Whillians to me) still tastes the same as it used to 30 or 40 years ago. The option of having bits of batter with your chips (unheard of in Dover where I now live) is still available too, delicious!On this visit, sadly no Haddock available, so forced to have Cod, which although very nice, is not a patch on Haddock generally. Huge portions are served, really huge (both in size of the chip portion and the size of the fish). Good value too, with a free third portion of chips if 2 fish and chips are bought, with 4 fish we were offered a free 2 Litre bottle of drink chips. Very popular still, it was heaving, even ran into a friend from primary school I had not seen for 43 years!Looking forward to my next visit.

Whenever we've been in Sunderland before my family has always had a fish & chips/pizza from here. Every time we've been before, the food has been good. This time, however, I found that the takeaway had changed management, and also gone downhill since previous visits. Inside, the place was clean and the staff relatively friendly and patient. It appeared that little had changed with the management change this time. My family all had fish and chips, whilst me, being vegetarian, had a pizza and a garlic bread. They all found the fish & chips to be good, and a similar standard to previous visits. The pizza, however, did not seem to be up to usual standard and, once halfway through my meal, found myself unable to eat any more due to a stomach ache caused by the food.The rest of my family had no problems at all with the fish & chips from the Golden Fry, but seriously, don't have one of their pizzas - and stay as far away from the garlic bread as possible.
