Golden Cod in Gwynedd

I chose to give this place a try as it was the closest takeaway to where I was staying. Upon entering you can see the grease and grime on walls, and light switches. Pretty much everywhere behind the counter looked like it was not cleaned regularly. There was a distinct lack of basic customer service; no greeting, no please or thank you. Bits of tattered paper with faded writing randomly stuck up around the place and, what I assumed to be a fake note stuck onto the main menu board with brown tape. You can see the same note from a pic posted on here from 4 years ago!! That really should have been enough to make me walk out but it was late and I didnt know the area well enough to go somewhere else. After I ordered my food, I also noticed some disposable face masks randomly hung up on what looked like the end of a stainless steel utensil. The strings were yellow with grease. You will see them in the background of a pic posted on here from a different review from 1 month ago. It was possibly nearing closing time when I entered as they had hung the large floor mats on the railings at the fish and chips end of the takeaway (there are two sections in this place, one side for fish and chips the other for Indian food and kebabs.) I ordered the chips and a battered sausage. Unfortunately the food was not good at all.The chips were dry and the sausage was covered in thin light batter and was soft and mushy on the inside. I feel sad when I see establishments like this. It feels like the owners have no pride or passion in what they are doing. I wont be using this place again for the duration of my visit.

We always go out of way to stop here for a chicken kebab, huge chunks of chicken on freshly made to order naan bread - delicious!

Food is lovely. But cash only and no longer doing the curry dishes which is massive shame.

We live in the area and had to work late. We decided to get chips on the way home. The chips were tasteless and dry with hard lumpy bits in them. My husbands kebab was dry and the bread it was served on was clearly not warmed to soften. Both meals were stone cold. I totally agree with another reviewer, the girl behind the counter was rude and unfriendly. I wished we had not bothered.

Bought x2 kebabs (meat was dry) chips ate 1 they were like dry cardboard!!! A cheese/onion fritter … no taste of cheese and onion just potato 🤦‍♀️ worst chippy tea ever… stayed in caravan park nearby should have had my pot noodle instead!!

I live in the village, historically it has been a place to go but in the last month I would avoid! We ordered x2 chicken kebabs this evening, to say they were dry is an understatement! Do not waste your money, plus the young girl serving was rude. AVOID!!

Very small portions compared to other places have visited for similar price. not well wrapped don't take cards and service not very friendly would not return

The fish and chips and mushy peas were delicious absolutely fantastic the fish was fluffy, i actually wanna try the kebab next time am in there i recommend it

Fantastic chicken kebab & donor kebab last night. Love how they marinade the chicken and bake their own breads for the kebabs. Only £7.00 for a large kebab. Have given 4 stars as the place itself could do with a spring clean and a spruce up!

This fish bar is so underrated- the food here is so yummy and you can tell has been cooked in a clean environment. The staff were trying their hardest to be make me feel welcoming! It was such a comforting take out and it’s close to Dinas Dinlle beach which we took our food and ate as we watched the sunset. As it’s also close to Mount Snowdon we can back the next day after we finished our hike to eat more. So sad to be leaving this area but will definitely be returning here:). The pre house reviews did not match the quality of the food at all😍

Cash only here! Paid £8.10 for a Jumbo sausage, chips, peas and gravy, and £4.50 for a small chips and curry sauce - absolute rip-off !!! Surly, miserable Indian lady with very little English serving. Chips were horrible and dry.. as if they'd been overcooked and microwaved. Avoid this place.

Avoid at all costs. Charged £26 for our food and the chips were missing. Had to drive 20 minutes back to collect the chips and not an apology for the trouble and at one stage thought I'd have to pay again for the chips. Staff are surly, waited another 10 minutes just to argue the toss - chips are actually dry and not tasty. Save yourself a lot of bother and don't even go there.

Very poor service. Paid a lot of money and the girl serving had left the chips out so we had to drive back to pick them up. Had to argue with a very surly pair of staff who made us then wait another 10 minutes before we were finally given the chips!! Chips were hard and dry, food expensive and no card payments. Save yourself the trouble and don't bother with this place.

Ridiculously small portions, overpriced, dry chips and no card payments. Definitely a place to avoid.

Cash only, and the sort of chips you get in the afternoon reduced at Asda not at all enjoyable to eat, chewy and dry which was amazing as they looked as if they had cooked them from fresh. The shop is also tired and greasy and at over £16 for a very basic meal we were cheated. Avoid it, go to Caernarfon, I also hear good things about the pub opposite, just don't entertain fish and chips here.

Under new ownership even though we were the onl customers in the shop we had to wait a goid 1/2 hour for our food. The food not very tasty either. Shame the previous owners have gone.

Tried this place whilst visiting the area and on the recommendation about the kebabs . The establishment is extremely dated and tired to point of being off putting . Why would you have mega old , ripped posters and signs not to mention the heavily stained fittings and switches . Having said that the food was ok although the chips were poor . The kebab ( we had large mixed ) was plentiful and was ok but I have to say I've had much better .

We live locally & just popped on to look at reviews to see if the awfulness this place serves up has improved over the four years since our first and last visit. Apparently not, judging by the more recent reviews. They seem to have spread their nastiness into kebabs and curries though…

Fish was grease chips was over cooked it doesn't even deserve 1 star if you ask me

Fantastic So I didn’t use the chippy but the kebab part inside. It’s one of the best I have ever had! Fresh naan made there and then in the tandoor, delicious chicken and a nice donner meat (not like the greasy stuff from any other kebab place) fresh salads and tasty tangy sauces. Best in north Wales !

Couldn't fault the cod and chips it was delicious. The shop interior though was very dated don't let it put you off the good food.

Waste of £7.40 for a mixed kebab, cold as the shop itself, very dirty walls floors ceiling tiles, cobwebs were on their pensions. Window frames minging food left out flies everywhere…. Girl was pleasant enough but no ‘english’ understood when I tried to tell her that I changed my mind as soon as I noticed the filth around me, kebab got the bin. Outside the shop. Way overpriced and worth traveling to town for a ‘decent’ kebab if kebabs are decent🤦‍♂️

Got a large supreme Donner kebab, cheeseburger and chips and two jumbo sausage, All of the food was lovely will definitely be going back The two girls who served us were really friendly and polite can't fault it tbh

Sunday evening. Desperate for fast food (chippy fast food). Ordered fish, chips, peas and gravy x2 from The Golden Cod. Bellissimo!!! Comparable with our home town go-to chippy, George's in Reddish. Cash only, fill yer boots 👍

popped in after 5pm, chips were hard, sure felt like re-heated from last night, they should never of been served like that, it was clear the server could see how they looked, and like the other reviews, dont expect a smile, or a conversation from them-shame!!

First visit to the golden cod last Friday. Place looks a little run down. But the chicken tikka kebab was delicious. I ordered it on recommendation. I was not disappointed. The freshly cooked flat bread with great big chunks of chicken, loads of salad and plenty of sauce. I had the medium and o/h had a large. It was huge and honestly the large could easily have fed us both. Slightly less impressed with kids meals sadly. Ordered double burger plain. Got single, sadly we were staying 20 mins away so too far to go back and correct it. Chicken nuggets and chips went down well with miss 8. Plenty of nuggets (8) and enough chips for her, but if the portion is the same for adults (I don’t know if it is) then I would say it’s on the small side. Total cost was about £24. I would go back every week for one of those kebabs. It looks like this business along with many others is struggling due to the opening of the bypass. Of your in the area and fancy a decent kebab definitely worth popping in. They only take CASH.

We are staying in the village and happened upon this chippy on a Sunday evening and decided to give it a go. We were glad we did. The fish were freshly cooked, very large (justifying the rather high price) the batter perfect and the fish was tasty. The chips were good as well. The mushy peas were a bit watery and almost certainly out of a tin, but sadly that’s often the case these days. The establishment is cash only but I didn’t see a sign to tell you that - in this day and age it’s probably worth making that a bit clearer. However, happy to give a 4.5 review rounded up to 5.

Arrived no one on the Fish and chips side of the he shop, as the kebab side was busy, normally different staff in each section, had to wait sometime to be served, asked for Fish chips and mushy peas, was charged £10.20, I had to ask if this was correct as normally its around £7, staff said it was correct as prices had increased, (fish is over £5 now) whilst one staff member served me another staff member came over from the Kebab side of the shop wanting two trays of chips, could here staff whispering, then mention of it being a small chips, price board says regular, seems the last of the chips were shared over my tray and the other two trays, when I got home seems a lot of the chips had been taken off to forefil my chips order and the other customers, no way was this a regular tray of chips, the fish looked good, but was just warm and not hot, the only good thing was the mushy peas, definitely will be avoiding this shop in future and looking elsewhere for my chippy takeaway.

Very poor service unless your a local, Slownto get you your food, very smug, cash only but no signs within eye line stating that. Glad I won't be in this neck of the woods again so can avoid. Not sure why it was recommended by the holiday cottage we where staying in.

Fancy wasting your only cheat meal in the week on this. Avoid. To make it worse I’d just done a 5km run with a severe gradient. Chips had clearly been cooked several times over the past week! Save yourself the trouble and drive past.

Please don’t go here. I purchased a kebab and 4 sausages and chips. Where do I start. The kebab had a really funky after taste to it. I could not eat it also the chips were as hard as anything. Miserable staff. Definitely won’t be going back

Got to be one of the best kebabs around.

We used to come here at least twice a week, the food is very nice, we understand the prices have had to go up but shame the portions have gone down drastically too 😕

Was very expensive, the fish seemed shop frozen and chip were very yellow as if oil not been renewed.

I only wish I could post a picture hands down in any category the worst fish and chips I've ever experienced in my life possibly the worst food genuinely don't know how you could get it this wrong. I don't know what the people writing good reviews have been eating but it wasn't this. Takeaway kebab burnt and tasteless and oh dear never had such a disgusting chips , sausage and baked beans - swimming in grease all mixed together!.Beware of their customer service it needs great attention too. Avoid we certainly will for evermore!!

It said it offered Tandoori food and even displays curries on their menu but the man behind the counter just gave me a glazed look when I asked for an onion Baji. Why have a menu if your not going to bother with it? I then walked up to the other end of the counter and asked for sausage and chips. When I went to pay with my card, I was told they don't take cards. What business in this post COVID world only deals in cash??? I had to go to the local supermarket in the pouring rain just to get some cash out to pay. There was no sign in the chip shop saying cash only otherwise I wouldn't have bothered but I'd already ordered. Then the food, the chips were tasteless, I think the oil needed changing and the sausage was bland. It was a cheapest sausage you could get. My socks would taste better than the food I've just eaten here. Avoid if you have any taste!!

Tasty onion rings and scampi, but the chips were meh.

Fish was freshly and beautifully cooked as were the very tasty Beef burgers.

Great little takeaway. Super fresh cod with my fish and chips. Chips were perfectly done. Handy having the kebabs and pizza in the same store as well.

I got the mixed kebab because of the reviews and it is the best kebab I've ever eaten. The doner meat is especially good! I'm pretty sure the flatbread was cooked fresh because it is incredible! I was served really quickly and the staff were very polite - unlike other views mentioned here. 10/10, would buy again

Nice enough place, good food, service was a little slow and vibe was a bit meh but otherwise good place, reliable and tasty. Nice variety on offer for a chippy too.

BEST KEBABS EVER - try the large mixed kebab. A hidden and underappreciated gem.

Not only the best kebabs in Wales they are hands down the best kebabs in the UK , no other kebabs come close to these bad boys. Large kebab feels like a brick they are that heavy. Not many will eat a full kebab by themselves they are massive. Mixed kebab 10/10

In all of my years this has been the WORST takeaway of my life! Cold chips, naan bread kebab as dry as a sandy flip flop! Naan bread not cooked, made to feel very uncomfortable in the shop, felt very uncomfortable indeed, I will never go back!

The food lost its standard used to be good now you're more likely to get food poisoning, last time never again I was sick for 3 days with belly ache and diarrhoea.

Massive kebabs and always very tasty.

We’d had a long walk and were famished. We were very grateful that the Golden Cod was opened. We ordered one standard fish and chips and it was enough for both of us. It was cooked fresh to order and was just right. Chips were good too and piping hot. We sat at the picnic benches outside and it was a perfect finish to a great day.

3 stars, could have been 4. Great fish and chips. But customer service not friendly. The girl serving was ok. Miserable guy cooking was just that, not friendly, didn't say hello, in fact looked at me like I was inconveniencing him by having to cook

Excellent food. Service good. Had to wait a long time, but sure it was fresh cooked.

This used to be a very good chippy but I bought fish and chips there tonight and it was a miserable experience. Surly staff with no conception of customer service. The fish was dry and unappealing in a soggy batter, the chips limp and lukewarm and I had to wait ages for them. I only managed to eat less than half of it and binned the rest. Worst of all, the customer side was filthy and grim. Just hope the kitchen side isn’t like that. Been going there occasionally for many years but never again. Sorry to have to say all this but it’s just how it was.

Slow and didn't get the order right, didnt realise until we got home. Food is average. Been there a few times over the years and I would say it's declining, probably time to find a new place.

Poor service,chips are luke warm and need to reheat by time i get home(2 minute walk).the shop is just a shambles…owners argueing in own language which is embarassing whole you stood there watching..feel for the kids that work there as the owners dont look nice people to work for

Battered sausage and chips with curry sauce was excellent, however I was unaware of the kebab side, after I ordered I saw and they looked great!

Use this chippy often, when I went for a takeaway tonight the prices had gone up, ok fair enough what hasn't these days, but the amount of chips in the specials has also been halved and realised have way home that they hadn't put the two pots of peas in the order , had to turn back half way to collect them and it wasn't worth the trip back as the peas were mostly water, won't be using it in a hurry again, specials from a Chinese is much better

Had a large kebab and chips, it was very tasty, cost £8.50 for the lot, which may seem a tad over standard but the portion sizes more than make up for it, service was quick and the seating outside the shop was good Overall, definitely worth going

Fish pre fried and dry, chips ok only, reasonable portion size. On my visit they forgot to provide mushy peas which I ordered. I couldn't be bothered to go back in due to the overall experience, I figured the peas wouldn't be up to much anyway.

Exellent food , good size portions what ever is your order. We always phone the order through as it can be busy. Mixed kebab is to die for.

Waited over 30 mins for simple dishes, 4 x sausage and chips plus 1 fish. Chips were under cooked, sausage tasted like they were past sell buy date ( went in the bin )and fish was so thin and tastless it was more like eating plain crisp, staff not very friendly and didn't seem to know what to do or how to serve the public with manners. Only went there cos it was nearest but will drive the extra milage next time. Won't be recommending this place unless I have an enemy lol

Never tried the fish there. But the chips are classic seaside style (fish and chips) chips. i.e. very nice. But the jewel in the crown for me is the other side of the takeaway where they make Kebabs. The tandoori chicken kebab served in a fresh handmade, homemade naan bread that comes with your choice of fresh salad and variety of sauces is probably as good as they come!

Service seemed a bit disorganised. Average chips (lots of little crispy ones). Decent sized piece of fish but quite thin. Enjoyed the mushy peas! The takeaway did not look very clean which was a little off putting! (Was starving though so still got food!) Note it's Cash only.

Refuse to go there ever again. Every time I’ve been there, the owner makes you feel uneasy. A kid takes your order, then you stand there for ages. Then, they serve the people who come in ages after you first. How odd ?. The first time the chips were not good. The second time I walked out !

This is wales number 1 crap fish’s and chip shop the owner is rude and obnoxious and would be better working for the council collecting dog s**t off the street the place is shambles save you money and go elsewhere YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

It's ok. Had to que for 25mins. Portion sizes are quite small. Never the less, they looked quite short staffed, so credit etc. Fish was good, but again little on the small side for the price.

Oh dear. We were tired and hungry and too lazy to drive back into Caernarfon. What a mistake. It look grotty from the outside, was more grotty on the inside. Stood in a small queue for 20mins before anyone spoke to me, whilst various locals came and went and tourists stood around looking confused. Was told that our order would take 15 to 20mins when we were eventually served - this turned into 40mins. When we got back to our holiday home, the mushy peas were flurescent green, the curry sauce looked like something un-mentionable and the fish and chips were just aweful. The only time my (very hungry) kids have ever left over half of their meal. The McDonalds on the edge of Caernarfon would have been a much better bet.

Absolutely terrible. The chips were old, you could taste it. I don’t think the oil in the fryer has been changed since we were scared of the Y2K bug. No gloves were used whilst handling food. I don’t think a health inspector has ever walked through the doors. If they did…… would be shut down straight away

First of all the man who served us was very unwelcoming and impolite. Had an attitude of he couldn't be "bothered" to serve us. He spoke so quietly and mumbled that we had to ask him 3 times to repeat what he said. One plus is this place is a few quid cheaper than some other chippies around, however I would rather pay said few quid as the quality of the chippy wasn't the best. We ordered 2 large fish and 1 large chips. Portion was on the small side, fish was quite small and the batter just slid of the fish when trying to eat it. Batter wasn't crispy at all, I think it needed longer to cook. Overall won't be returning here and if I were you I'd drive past and go to another chippy.

Large queue and long waiting time not the best fish and chips but not the worst.

Chips shrivelled, dry, very cool (not in the good way). Fish was just out of fryer, but was only just ok, the batter was tasteless and hard but chewy. Gave one star because I couldn't give no stars.

Kebab znakomity.. W mięsie nie czuć tłuszczu jest naprawdę dobre dużo sałatek i ciasto ręcznie robione na miejscu. Porcja ogromna, Ja osobiście całego nie dałam rady zjeść. Obsługa szybka, sprawdza i bardzo miła. Ceny dużo tańsze niż w innych miejscach a za taką ilość jedzenia to można powiedzieć że bardzo niska. Naprawdę polecam,nie jem kebabów już w innych miejscach.

Great Keenan's best I have had in a long time. The large was huge and in a fresh baked pitta again something I haven't seen away from big cities. Very good, tasty and reasonably priced.
