Goa Exemplary Indian Cuisine in Sunderland

Cannot believe this was our first visit here but it certainly won’t be our last. We booked for 6pm and there wasn’t a free table to be seen. The staff were attentive and friendly, there was a wide choice on the menu ranging from more traditional dishes to more bespoke dishes - we went for 2 curries from the Goa House Specialities and WOW they were amazing. We have eaten curries all over the UK but we could both honestly say it was one of the best curry’s we’d ever had. Huge compliments to the chef and staff, keep doing what you’re doing!!

Table was booked for 1830 in time for the happy hour menu. Food was very tasty and hot. Service was fast and friendly. Naan bread was fresh fluffy and warm. Restaurant was full by the time we were leaving. Will definitely return soon.

Excellent Indian restaurant with a fantastic vibe on a busy Saturday night. The food we three had was extraordinarily good with quality ingredients. This rivals any of the best Indian restaurants in Newcastle such as Sachin or Rani, in my view. And eith plenty of nice pubs/bars up toward Seaburn, a good night out can be had in the locality. Strong Recommend.

Came here tonight to treat my Mam for her birthday, I’ve been a few times and as always, I cannot fault this restaurant. First time for my Mam and she absolutely loved it. The food is delicious and you have a wide choice to choose from. The staff are brilliant, very helpful and friendly. We’ll both be back here, thank you Goa for another lovely meal. New to the area - have tried a few different Indian takeaways. Goa was by far the best out of the 6 or 7 in the area. Excellent service and a great authentic taste. The texture of the curries was spot on and the meat was flavoursome and well cooked. Would highly recommend.

Average food for an expensive price. Better places to go for less money. Starter came and was a nice start then the main was a let down. Think they for got to put spice in my curry and chicken was a little tough. Customer service was not the greatest. Got served after people that arrived after us and had to keep asking for drinks.

Stopped in Sunderland for a night, popped in for our evening meal, Service was amazingly fast and the food was good. Really good value for money as well.

We eat in lots of Indian restaurants on our holidays and this was one of the best we have found. The food was excellent. We decided to try the Korai, as it was new to us and we were impressed. Service was friendly and there was a very pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant - busy without being overfull and background music at a level that allowed conversation and added to the ambiance. If you arrive before 7. p.m., the 'early bird' set menu is excellent value. A bit strange that no restaurants in this area came up on a Tripadvisor search of 'restaurants near you', even though our hotel was only 100 yards away. Glad we found the place on Google!

Went on spec and got a table. Had the Happy Hour menu which was good value. Good food. Good service. Tried a couple of different dishes. Would have appreciated slightly longer between courses. No hot flannels.

Ordered a delivery for my birthday. Starters, chips and naan were greasy and soggy as well, curry left a pool of orange water on the plate and everything seemed to have the same underlying flavour, like one spice had been used too generously in everything. Really disappointed given the price

I’ve been to this restaurant many times. The food you cannot fault but the customer service is not great. The manger/owner thinks he is running a professional restaurant however I think he needs a few lesions in customer service. My wife and two daughters went for a meal on a Saturday night in August. The restaurant was busy as it was bank holiday weekend. We booked a table for 6.30pm and we were at the restaurant a few minutes early. No problem and shown to our table. We ordered our drinks and food. Everything was fine until it came to the end of the meal. Our table was cleared after our main course. The customary hot towels came out and then cleared from the table. We were then sat for ten minutes. Not once were we asked if we wanted a coffee or wanted a dessert. My daughters both wanted a dessert. So eventually I got the attention of a waiter to order. While we were sat waiting for the desserts to come out, the owner/manager came over and asked if we could leave the table and sit in the bar area to finish our drinks as he needed our table back. I was gobsmacked by such a request. Bearing in mind we had just ordered two desserts. We had only had the table for a hour. I replied and said we’ve just ordered two desserts I’m not moving. After that comment the meal felt spoilt and we just wanted to get out of there. I understand if we were just sitting there ordering drink after drink and had been at the table for two hours but this was ridiculous. Like I say the food you cannot fault but the customer service is terrible. The owner thinks he’s running a high end restaurant. Unfortunately his service skills are far from high end. We will never return to the restaurant which is a real shame. Plenty of other really good Indian restaurants in Sunderland that would be grateful for our custom like Yuvraaj Restaurant.

The food at Goa is absolutely tremendous I will be going back sometime soon and the staff were brilliant and the price range is good.

Went for a meal in happy hour found the service and food excellent it’s nice to see the staff observing the COVID rules and we felt comfortable and safe

We have always wanted to try here and have done so a couple of time Pre-COVID times. We booked a table as we knew it would be busy. We were greeted by what I assume is the owner. Shown to our table and had our drinks order taken. I got the bhuna chicken on puree and it was very tasty and extremely well presented. I then got chicken balti which was very tasty and huge portions. A table booking is a must as every time we have been, it has been very busy

Lovely meal this evening. Restaurant was busy but not packed. Social distancing measures in place with numerous hand sanitising stations as well as screens between the few tables that could not be spaced far enough apart. Negative reviews regards distancing measures nearly led us to cancel our reservation, delighted that we didn’t. Food and service very good. Highly recommended.

We arrived 20 mins early, but were greeted and shown to a table within a few minutes. Atmosphere was good 7.30 pm on Friday night, plenty of diners and staff.Had a glass of the only red wine available it was vinegry and was sent back.Onion Bahji starters were just ok, with hardly any accompanimentSag Aloo seemed ok except it tasted of fish!Main course of Korai was bland with lots of onion. £38 for 2 of us - Never Again.

Booked for eat out to help out discount, haven't been before so seemed an ideal time to try. We were not dissapointed, very busy but plenty of staff,covid management fine but not OTT like some places, if your paranoid don't go out is my opinion.food was absolutely fantastic, not a single thing to complain about and will be back again and again.

Arrived to see virtually no covid-19 measures. No track and trace details taken, tables packed in, very very busy no social distancing. When I mentioned the apparent lack of measures I was told that people were back to back so it was ok. I said we wouldn't be stopping and was told 'if you want to stay safe eat at home'

The food here was really lovely but I was extremely disappointed with the last of COVID-19 measures. Actually apart from the bottle of hand sanitiser at the top of the stairs they haven’t done anything that I could see to protect their customers. The tables are all right next to each other and all the tables were full, the staff including serving staff and kitchen staff don’t wear masks, things like menus which are plastic coated are just collected from tables and handed to the next table without wiping them. I loved the food which was cooked excellently but I did find the medium/hot dishes actually weren’t hot at all but they were packed with flavour. If I was in the area again I’d probably return.

This is the best Indian food experience in Sunderland by a mile. Beautiful food and venue not to mention a sea view. Can't wait to return.

We got a take away, however the restaurant looked lovely. We ordered bindi bhaji, tarka dahl, channa masala, onion bhajis rice and chapattis. The food was amazing. The best take away I’ve ever had. Really tasty , not at all oily. The staff were really friendly and it was really reasonably priced.We were staying at the hotel a few doors along. If I was local I’d be a regular.

Being from curry capital Bradford. There isn't much around the UK to live upto places we've been.Chicken korai was poor taste, poor texture, not spiced correctly. Chicken pieces were too large. It was sweet a bit which isn't correct.Golden rule if u see Asians eating in a Indian resturaunts you know the food will be authentic curry. Nothing at goa is authentic. The chefs are clearly not got traditional Indian cooking backgroundsI could take them to a little place in Bradford which operates around five tables and wipes the floor with this place on Qaulity. There is Asians queing for the food its thst good. Seems to me like goa staff are minting it with there private reg range rover outside and lafing at the jordys for lining there pockets. Value for money expensive for taste. I think goa is more for representation. They like colours. And jordys love a pint wi there beer even the women sat down where lager drinkers. This tells me they have poor taste buds. 4.7 it's too high and deserves 3.5 from a curry connisuer!!!!!!

We went with friends as a belated Christmas present. A hidden gem on the first floor in the heart of Seaburn. We had eaten at another restaurant owned by the same person and visited this one because of our experience at the former. Needless to say, we werent disappointed. We needed an early booking because of a theatre vist immediately after. Service was good, food excellent and the sea view an added bonus. Highly recommended.

Visited for first time recently. Table booked for 6.30, restaurant was busy and only waited about 10 mins for table which was fine. However, after ordering meals there was a 30 minute wait for stater then a further 45 mins for main course. On a positive note the food when served was delicious.Would go again provided we were not in a hurry to go some where else.

Amazing food but poor service tonight unfortunately. We ended up waiting over an hour after our starters until our main courses arrived. We knew there would be a wait but sadly no one advised it would be this long. We had small children with us and ended up taking our main courses to go. Food was delicious when it came though.

Before booking I e-mailed a few good Indian Restaurants around Sunderland as one of our daughters is Vegan and I wanted to be sure that she'd be properly catered for. Taz from Goa e-mailed back almost immediately to confirm they could cater for vegans and that she didn't need to order in advance. Might sound obvious, but it isn't always the case with some places. The guys at Goa couldn't have been more helpful. Two omnivores and a vegetarian were dealt with quickly and then our server took the time to talk through the vegan options. One one point, when he was unsure, he went to the kitchen and came back quickly with the answer.We started with poppadoms with chutneys - the onion and apple one was delicious.We enjoyed a wide selection of main courses, from the very mild, nicely spiced Bhuna Chicken Masala, to hot and spicy but still flavourful Chicken Madras, not forgetting the veggie and vegan mains. Three side dishes we ordered were also prepared Vegan so that we could all enjoy them. All in all, an excellent meal in very nice, relaxed surroundings with a good atmosphere. Definitely not our last visit here.

We chose this Resatuarant for a change and wee delighted we did. We loved the comfortable chairs and well spaced tables, white cloth etc. The service was excellent and we just loved the food. We asked for one dish to be less spicy and it was- so good to findthis option. So well presented food and professionally served. Faultless. Will go again

First visit to Goa. We were warmly welcomed. Tables are well spaced so that you don't feel crowded by other diners. Food was very good. I have been a few years ago and was always nice. The staff were friendly and the service was good even though we turned up at 930pm on a Tuesday. The shashlik was very nice and the curry I had (forget the name) was first class. Only critical bit is the rice was a bit dry and tasted old. Would go again 100%

What a beautiful place with amazing people and gorgeous food. We have fallen in love with kayum our waiter, as well as the onion bhajis. Kayum’s service and customer service was exceptional. How is by far the best Indian restaurant in the area. We often eat here in large groups and the staff are very accommodating of 15/20 lads!

We went here on a Sunday teatime as a party of 9 for a 40th birthday and 8 of us had the happy hour menu. As is the norm you have to pay a bit more for the little extras like Tikka rather than plain chicken, or a flavoured rice, but on the whole we found it to be good value.

Fantastic dining experience. The staff were fantastic, friendly and attentive. The food was exceptional and was all bold, flavourful and delicious. Everything we ordered was presented beautifully and it is a very obvious everyone who works there takes great pride in cooking great food and providing excellent service. Highly recommended

Got a take out from here tonight which was absolutely delicious I had pakoras for start then chicken curry and rice it had big chunks of chicken will definitely be back samosachickencurry which had big chunks of chicken

Visited here a couple of weeks ago and were welcomed by a lovely young man. Drinks were served quickly and the food was brought out at after a small wait. Delicious and plenty! It was also my son’s birthday and we asked if they could do anything special and boy did they make him feel special! Would highly recommend and return again!

On arrival greeted by very friendly staff and shown to a lovely window table. Excellent drink selection and all staff very knowledgeable of the menu. Food was really tasty. We arrived just after happy which we normally do and is fab but still great. Only thing is when ordered pompadoms you normally recieve the sauces however we didnt. The starters were lovely / mains fab. Definitely recommend x

The ambience and service was great. The starters and naan were good but the curry let's this place down. We ordered 2 medium curries and they were completely without spice. If you like really mild curry this place could be for you, if you like flavour maybe try a hot curry or go somewhere else!

Been here tonight but had a take out which is 25 percent cheaper we had onion bargis for starters then I had chicken korma which had big chunks of chicken and was delicious hubby had lamb Sri Lanka which had loads of lamb big chunks he said it was amazing we had pilau rice and garlic naan well recommended will definitely be back

Went for meal with friends and we all prebooked our meal yet when we arrived we were given menus staff seemed disorientated i had prawn cocktail which i cud not eat because it was warm it hadnt been kept in controlled temperature i got served my curry which stood ages before my rice arrived therefore my meal was lukewarm they approached us and asked if they could squash our tables together so they could put squash another table in for other customers we felt really rushed my opinion is over priced over rated and would not return cos i was ill day after

Had an absolutely delicious meal here for my graduation! Ordered the chicken tikka bhuna, chicken rogan josh, and a chicken hariyali - all of which were amazing. The staff were so so friendly and couldn’t have been more helpful either; one of them (we didn’t get any names, sorry) took the time to explain the different flavours/consistencies of the food we’d ordered to ensure that we weren’t disappointed, which I thought was lovely. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back!

After walking down Queens Parade the doors to the upstairs restaurant was spoilt by the door to the backyard which was open to view and not a pretty sight.If it wasn’t the responsibility of Goa to sort it out it would have good not to have this as a first impression.

We came here for our monthly thank god its friday meet up. Weve been here several times for very good reason, excellent service, friendly and non intrusive, wonderful menu and quality of beautiful authentic food, good wine and beer choices, cleanliness and overall top dining experience .

If you are visiting Sunderland or live here this restaurant is well worth a visit, especially if you love Indian food. We took friends from Essex who were visiting and they loved it. Great choices from the menu, food is superb. It's very well presented and great value for money. The guys in there gave great service, very attentive friendly and professional. If you are visiting for the Sunderland air show then this place is ideal.

We are regularly customers to Goa and our experience has always been great. Our last visit was no exception and I felt a review was needed as it was exceedingly busy on Friday evening.

A first visit for my wife and myself, although the other party members (all family) are regulars and chose the venue. Their choice cannot be faulted- food and service were outstanding. Value is excellent, we are used to paying much more for such quality in the South East.

At hotel next door but could not resist menu and after reading the other reviews could not pass it by and have a meal. Service is fast and friendly and the food choices and tastes were one of the best I have tasted around the globe.

Visited as a party of six. The restaurant has a very smart contemporary design and super friendly efficient staff. Prices are above the norm but the portions are huge. We all opted for starters, a main curry dish, rice and naan bread, we each had two drinks and the bill came to £150. They do offer a set menu for £10.95 on certain days and nights.

I was served a draught beer supposedly Cobra which was extremely poor! The starter was bland and greasy. The main course was also greasy and I left half of it! Won't be back, looking at reviews which are generally favourable I wonder if it was the cooks night off. Won't be back!

The meal was fine but I have had better. A good selection of dishes. Quite expensive for what it is. I would rate it adequate but not special.

Just wanted to say thank you so much for making our family celebration so special. Nothing was to much trouble, my daughter who is vegan had so much to choose from and each dish was adapted to meet her needs. Everything without exception was delicious, we were greeted with warmth, my 85 year old gran was fussed over all night and the service was brilliant. Thank you so much for a really special night.

Family of four and only one of us ate their meal! Far too much coriander in nearly everything we ordered which completely spoiled the taste. One curry was very sweet and had the most odd taste, again so disappointing. Will not return but we gave it a go as their advertising pics look so tasty....will stick to our tried and tested Moti Raj....cannot be surpassed.

Had our table booked for 9pm on NYE, it was very busy so a small wait was expected. Our waiter was very apologetic and seated us as quickly as possibly. We had our drinks topped up regularly and had our food brought out relatively quickly considering the number of people being served overall. It was our first visit and the food was amazing. Maybe a little over priced for NYE but that’s to be expected. We will definitely return in the future.

Wandered in last night. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. We’re put next to a young couple with two kids under three which was painful. Who takes this age kid out on a Saturday night at 21.30hrs. Not the restaurant’s fault but they should have been ushered into a corner where their noisy and disruptive antics would not disturb anyone else.

Smart place, had the happy hour meal. Excellent naan, nice Sri Lankan chicken. Jal fraizee was heavily flavoured with tomato puree. The sauce with the prawn on puri tasted very fresh, but the puri itself was like four communion wafers. Good in parts!
