Gilesgate Golden Chippy in County Durham

Best fish and chips that I have had in the UK. Skinless and boneless cod fillets with a beautifully balanced batter (also not greasy). The kitchen looked very clean and the food was very well priced. This will be my new chippy from now on. Note: they do not accept card so be prepared to take some cash along. Well worth the extra effort.

Excellent grilled chicken kebab with a fresh salad. Delivery is always really quick from here and the chips are proper chips shop chips which is great if you don’t fancy the side salad.

Ordered fish n chips & fish cake said they'd be there in 45 minutes still haven't been as delivery went too Bowburn so still having to wait.

I ordered fish and chips and that was nearly £10 down the drain, woke up with food poisoning the next day. My partner had a mixed grill wrap and he enjoyed his. Was bitterly disappointed and will not be returning

I ordered for munchies box to be delivered to me via food hub and the takeaway order was cancelled. I was debited £22.50 since Nov., 27th and have not been refunded till now.

Looks like dog food...never again will I order

First time trying here tonight, Me and the other half drove here and ordered the 16" munch box! Absolutely unbelievable! You get enough in this to feed a family of 4 to 5! Food was beautiful and the chicken curry and pizza is just Absolutely out this world! Would 100% recommend 👌 and the prices you cannot grumble with for the amount of food you get.

Great food, and definitely one of the better establishments in Durham! Pizzas and wraps and delicious too!

Me and my boyfriend went out for a drive we ended up gilesgate we didn't realise that we had driven 167 miles, but found a lovely chippy there friendly staff great atmosphere

On 17/06/2023 we had kebab we had lovely one few times but this time they left me dispointed off cuts was absolutely terrible I will try one more time if the same I will not order from here again big shame

Amazing food quality! Prices have gone up very recently which has steered me away…

Delivery very late and items missing from our order. Seems to be a running theme with deliveries judging by other reviews on Google. The restaurant did attempt to rectify the error and deliver the missing items. But it was already too late and there would have been too much karting back and forth. Friendly delivery driver though, apologetic over the phone. Did seem to be in a hurry. *Owners* why don't you take on board the issues with deliveries coming from the Google reviews, customer service goes a long way. Remember it's easier to keep old customers and it is harder to find new ones.

I'll never use this place again. They sent text saying they cancelled order as per request. I did not request order to be cancelled. Now have to wait 2 to 3 days for refund. Disgraceful.

From 5 star to 1 star, shame cause food is always great from here, but cancelling my order cause your too busy and not bothering to tell the people sat waiting for hours that you had cancelled it, is a total joke! Then hanging up on me twice instead of explaining? Classy 👌🏻

Shocking!! Waited 2 hours for a kebab and a pizza, for the delivery to arrive and there be no pizza, and we’ll as for kebab I’ve seen nothing like it. I wish I could upload a picture 9 stands of cold kebab and half a portion of lettuce and onion , how any one can charge for that and call it a large Donna kebab is beyond me, and not only that the phone has been off the hook for the past hour l, shocking food shocking customer service. Decided after ringing for over a hour to go to the shop. Looked confused when I said my pizza was missing. Made me a pizza as a replacement I wish I didn’t waste the diesel driving there as it was raw dough, how I don’t know as the base itself was 5mm thick. Shocking! Worst I’ve had ever

Pizza is one of the best in durham fish is fresh everything you need in 1 place

Absolutely fabulous place, great food, friendly customer service, amazing prices and excellently cooked. Would recommend to anyone. Get yourselves in. Very rarely order from anywhere else.

Owners are decent people but food is proper greacy and it not bad but not the best

Foods nice as had it plenty times before but takes wayy to long to get here they said it would only be an hour and its now 30 minutes late fair enough they're busy but the food is going to be cold if they're any longer

Pizza tasted like a greasy chip and cheese pulled straight off

From the outside it looks like the set for a comedy sketch satirising the humble British chippy, complete with suspicious sounding menu items and a residential style door rather than the sort you usually get at restaurant's (presumably it was the cheapest). This comedy factor acknowledged the food has always been great in my experience and comes at a great price, managing to be both cheaper and more consistent than its competition in my experience. For unpretentious fine fried fare at the best price in the city it's the place to go.

Beautiful fish and chips and value for money

We're used to good fish and chips. This was really not good, and we honestly couldn't finish it. Fish was dry and chewy, definitely from frozen and had suffered the consequences. Batter was mostly soft, and parts that were crispy had that nasty taste of burnt oil - a sign they should probably be changing their frying oil more frequently.

Ordered at 21.50 still waiting... why confirm an order when you cannot deliver??

Best pizza you will ever find from a takeaway/chip shop. We wouldn't go anywhere else. The customer service and quality of food is outstanding.

Absolutely shocking customer service, arguing with the customer it's not their fault the food is 2 hrs late, no apology nothing, the driver even refused to actually deliver the food when he did arrive and and insisted we had to go and meet him as there was too many houses

Waited 2 hours 15 mins for food and waited around half an hour for reply on there messaging service cant tell you about the food because i ordered from another pizza shop which came before my order was cancled at this place a joke reall

One of the best kebabs I've had in a long time, to top it off the chilli sauce actually had a bit of a kick to it a little hotter for me would be nice but still better than all the rest

Ordered at 7.40pm it's 9.15pm now can't get through on phone line, just eat says it's closed but order was accepted, took my money for the food, no email about any cancellation and no refund, shocking service disgusted

2 hours for delivery its joke wont be using again

2nd time ordering and this time ordered through their app. Food wasn't the best and really not impressed asked for no coleslaw and chicken kebab came with it. Also chicken kebab was previously nice cooked with peppers and onion this time it wasn't quite disappointing. Feel like because I ordered through the app that I got a mediocre service as you can't leave a review on the app. Will try one more time then just give up on take away treats completely.
