George and Vulture pub in Hackney

Cracking good traditional London pub. Fine Fullers Ales, a roaring fire and a really nice team behind the bar. They also do truly excellent sour dough (SoDo) pizzas. Well worth a visit, and Hoxton Square is just a few steps away. No noisy fruit machines, and a great clientele, mostly smart young(ish) professionals. We will be back for another visit.

Great pub atmosphere-proper London pub like my dad use to regularly frequent. Staff friendly. Guinness excellent. One of the friendliest pubs I’ve been in.

Just such a special pub, as Fullers pubs are. The best beer you can hope to taste. Wonderful atmosphere and a gem of a find And the found is excellent

Had a problem the previous week but the manager (Simon) rectified it immediately, couldn't had asked for any better customer service. My wife and myself had roast beef for lunch, one of the best Sunday roast i have had. Top quality ingredients and plentiful. Fantastic staff and great atmosphere

The guy behind the bar, I assume the landlord was so rude. He might need to remember that customers are customers! I asked for mustard to go with my pork pie (over priced for the quality), he insisted on putting the mustard in a pot even though I asked for it on the plate and was asked 'why am I being so impatient'. After waiting for a good 30 minutes (it wasn't busy) my pizza never turned up. I didn't ask him where it was as I didn't want to look impatient again! When he did come over, and I asked where my pizza was he scuttled back into the pub to cook it. Offering no apology! As all of my colleagues had finished their food I went into the pub to ask for a takeaway box, he abruptly told me that the pizza was on his way! Pizza came out, female server was rude and offered no apology. Will not being going back!

This is our local. It’s always absolutely rammed, but a nice place to pop for after work drinks. Quiz format is really good too.

Made a reservation for late lunch and arrived, our table was there. We ordered at the bar and waited for what seemed 30 minutes for a couple of pizzas. After asking, we were told there was a large group and they ordered before us. Maybe so, we didn't see they did and maybe they booked too. Either way, would have been helpful to be told as we had meetings to go back to and the wait meant our lunch was very rushed and we returned late to our work. The other thing that surprised me was that online the price is 9 quid, but I was charged 12!!! No receipt. I said I thought it was 9. I had checked menus before hand. I was impressed with the knowledge of staff when it came to our order and ingredients, and the pizzas were hot and fresh. A little too burnt on the base. Staff were friendly and kind and the atmosphere in the pub lovely. Also a plus that they accept cash. Not happy with the price though.

After a hour’s wait (with no heads up that this would be the case), our meal arrives. Meat was dry and overcooked, cabbage so hard that it was inedible, Yorkshire pudding was from a packet & tasted as if it had been cooked in rancid lard, carrots were burned. Gravy on the side was interpreted as not needing to give us any gravy, so the dryness of everything couldn’t be ameliorated. Waitress was surly, no apology, we had to wait at the bar to ask for salt and pepper,l. Staff didn’t care about our experience - didn’t even want to engage - and completely ignored the people at the next table. I can be picky about food - but my husband will literally eat anything and left most of his meal. We won’t be coming back.

Times are hard so the offer of Monday 2 for 1 pizza at the George and Vulture was too good to miss. Delicious sourdough pizza with imagination toppings really hit the spot. Usual price is £12 so real bargain for a large quality pizza. Friendly bar staff, will definitely be back👍

Probably the worst manager I've ever experienced. Very picky about who he likes and doesn't appreciate locals. Or anyone that likes interacting with his staff. Probably the worst experience I've had in a pub in london so far. Made to feel so unwelcome. Wouldn't recommend.

This was one of my favourite attractions in London for the entire weekend that we visited. I can't recommend highly enough. Such a fun time and we would most certainly re-visit next time we're back in the city.

Went here for Sunday lunch on a warm early September day. The staff were so welcome especially Simon the landlord. Nothing was too much bother. The food was superb, a roast with so many trimmings. Perfectly cooked and attention to detail was great. Atmosphere was excellent and would highly recommend.

Visited several times last year in the build up to Christmas and in both Jan & Feb. Left rave reviews and couldn't stop telling my friends about this superb venue. Had never been made to feel more welcome by the gentleman and his team and the atmosphere was incredible! Sad to say the spark has very much gone out! Staff seem fall less happy less eager and less motivated and the atmosphere is completely absent. Wait times were PATHETIC. please turn back the clock!!!

A couple of us went to the George & Vulture on Saturday last week. We arrived around 7pm and it was incredibly busy but we were still lucky enough to find a table despite not having a reservation. The service was quick and all the staff were incredibly polite and welcoming. The pizza was delicious, they had a great wine selection, and were all very accommodating for any dietary needs. Thanks to Simon and his team for a lovely evening!

Two people waitressing. Pub 80% full Waited 20 minutes for service. Another 25 for our three drinks to arrive. Would be really good if they could get another person serving.

Clearly understaffed, waited 40mins for a beer, then got a second round only 15min before closing? The only waitress sat down with patrons for a cigarette while we were trying to get someone’s attention to order. Painful evening, looks like they’re having management issues but that’s not my problem unfortunately

Visited on a Saturday, tried to say hello to staff who pointed at security, managed to grab a seat indoors. Table service was prompt, ordered two pizzas really delicious and fast service. No cutlery offered or any napkins, went to ask for napkins and got...

Visited this gem with my wife towards the end of last year and were made to feel very welcome. Excellent choice of drinks at a decent price - we didn't eat but the food also looked fantastic. Staff were friendly and energetic and the atmosphere with other customers was good. We recommend the George hugely and look forward to returning.

I used to live across the street from this pub but never came here. I recently moved back to this area and decided to give it a go because I heard they had good pizza. Went in with friends who live close by on summer bank holiday and found out that their Monday deal applied that day as well. Pizza was fantastic! Only beer included in the deal was Peroni, which is OK but would have preferred another local choice.

Fuimos allí con nuestra hija para bebidas. Gran ambiente, servicio muy atento y una gran mezcla de gente. Incluso tenían ofertas en bebidas, gin tonics y encantador. No tienen comida pero lo que vimos parecía delicioso. Sólo puedo recomendar este bar, fuimos dos veces.

Vimos las buenas críticas aquí y decidí probar un lunes por la noche. Super sorprendido en 2 por 1 en la pizza al horno de piedra. Queso de cabra n artículos tomates deliciosos - rocket n, personal amable, me encantó.

Avoid, avoid, avoid! This is an obviously and outrageously racist pub. I've lived in London all my life and luckily have never had to experience treatment like they dole out here and seem to consider as normal. If you are not a white person you will not be welcome!! Unless you're ok with supporting an establishment like that please don't waste your time here.

As an old street local I've been frequenting the G&V since 2008, and have to admit it's a great local pub with a homely atmosphere and friendly staff.I love winter days when the fireplace is roaring and you can enjoy some drinks and great food with friends. It's a great escapism sometimes from the hipster and gentrified area.

Gorgeous pub with amazing food. Really relaxed atmosphere and great place to enjoy an evening/afternoon with a group of friends. We ordered our food all together and the staff were able to serve us all on time and all the orders came through correctly. One of our friends changed their order last minute and no fuss was made over it and the staff were super friendly and accommodating which made the evening more enjoyable. Great array of drinks/lagers/beers/ales; and food menu was fabulous. Catered for all our needs. Going to make this our local hang out. Couldn't speak more highly of this fab place.

This is a lovely, traditional British pub but with very good food and a lovely atmosphere. I was there with my kids, all over 18. We found the place to be very homely and the staff friendly. The food was a cut above usual pub grub and the pizzas were excellent. I saw no evidence of discrimination and one of my boys who is gay said he felt very at home there. Do visit.

I'm glad it has good pizza because it's got nothing else going for it. This establishment racially profiles and criminalises customers with no evidence or grounds for doing so, without so much as an apology. Avoid!

We were in this pub, which we always frequent, and one of our colleagues who is a black woman went to the bathroom. She came out and was removed from our table of 20 and accused of taking and selling drugs with absolutely no evidence at all, she offered they could search her bag at which point they simply pointed at a random lady who was walking past and said "you sold her drugs didn't you"It was a vile case of blatant racial profiling, as the only black one in a group of 20 people. When this was pointed out to them, a member of staff "Simon" I believe he was called tried to appease things by saying "My girlfriend is black" - it could not have been any more text book.I suggest anyone who cares about racial equality steer far away from this vile pub.They should all be disgusted.

It's a big building from the outside but surprisingly small inside but on a quiet Tuesday we had a great lunch, at obviously London prices, in a shabby chique environment with excellent food and beer. Staff are friendly and it's a relaxed place to eat and drink not far from Old Street and the Shoreditch hinterland.

This a very nice place to go and grab a drink after work. On Fridays, the pub can be a little crowded so I recommend to drop by earlier. They also have incredible pizzas.

I researched Sunday lunch in London and this place had good reviews but unfortunately didn't live up to them. It started with only 3 tiny bits of bread to share a camembert, how does that work? No problems it getting a bit more but not great having to wait for it. I ordered the veggie option but it tasted really bad, meant to be a red onion gravy but it was like baby food. Again, no problems getting it changed but not what you want. The potatoes were under cooked so not in anyway the crispy roast you expect but the lamb was lovely. The sticky toffee was just a plain sponge with a toffee sauce. The waitress was great and so's the venue but it was such a shame especially as it was an Italians first ever experience of a Sunday lunch on a visit to the UK :-(

Dreadful "roast" potatoes that were more like old boiled potatoes. Watery gravy and chewy meat. Don't bother eating here, you'll be disappointed. AI had to feel sorry for the only waitress trying serving a whole pub by herself!

The George and Vulture is by far one of my favourite pubs in London. It has nice pub atmosphere and decoration, huge tables, some couches and a selection of beers. The pizza is by sodo pizza and is served every day. All pizzas are awesome but I am a big fan of Lorena which has butternut squash and feta. If you buy the sodo key chain (at £5 - it pays off at the first time!) you can have 2 for one every Monday. During summertime there are some tables to sit outside overlooking Pitfield street which has been recently through a makeover but at 10 you will be politely asked to go inside.

You're typical British Pub but with a spin......They make great, creative pizza. It seems a bit weird, but delicious. Good decor as well.

This is my local. I've lost count of the times I've been but they do the best pizza around. Plus a grey pub quiz on a Tuesday. It's worth booking for the quiz. It's also a great pub for a lazy Sunday afternoon in winter as they've got old battered sofas, fire, beer and pizza.

The first thing that strikes you about George and Vulture is the large sidewalk area and outside seating that makes you feel like you are in the centre of the Hoxton neighborhood. Upon entering you notice a laid back atmosphere and the fresh smell of pizza. Unlike many pubs in the area the service and bar staff are very friendly and accommodating. We ordered two of the sour dough pizzas and hand down it is the best pub pizza I have had for a while. The selection of drinks in equally good, featuring a wide selection of lagers, bitters and malts. The crowd is a combination of locals and office groups that are as friendly as the bar staff. The music is enjoyable without being too loud for conversation. A great place if you are looking for a quality pub off the busy streets of Old Street.

"Sodo" is quite well known in East London for pizza dough. The nearest place in zone1 to try their pizzas was this pub where they prepare the pizzas in a corner near the bar, using an electric oven.The atmosphere is extremely casual, it's a bit funny they take bookings because I saw a group having to gather stalls by themselves despite the booking... not total anarchy but quite close to it. Men's toilets are insanely small.They don't come to take orders so you need to go to the counter. When I ordered the waitress seemed to be about to burst in laughter and I found it quite rude. Anyway, I placed the order and the pizza was ready in about 5 minutes. The first thing I noticed were the poor toppings: barely a few chunks of mozzarella on a thin pizza. The taste of dough was indeed good but I didn't go there to eat focaccia with some tomato sauce.Prices are alright, 6 pounds for a margherita, but quite high for special pizzas (over 10 pounds without wood-fired oven and no generous toppings is not a good deal).Overall, a disappointing experience that may fill you the stomach but this pub can be fine just for a brief pint with friends.

Siamo stati in 25 amici. Abbiamo prenotato per cena il giorno prima e senza problemi ci sono stati riservati due tavoli. Il manager è stato accomodante e gentile. Si mangia inoltre (insolitamente per il luogo) una buonissima pizza cucinata dal pizzaiolo italiano. Consiglio questo posto!

I have had the opportunity to visit this great pub twice in the last month...The first for a corporate get together with a few like minded colleagues and the second for a few drinks for a colleague moving abroad. Both occasions were great but different, the first night during the Rugby world cup live on TV were the All Blacks, so we were entertained by a great bunch of Kiwis enjoying the rugby, as was everybody in the pub that night. It was packed, but the staff were extremely well organised and friendly, nothing was too much trouble and there were no queues at the bar at anytime.. The second visit was on a much quieter night but there was still a great atmosphere in the bar and a great cross section of people. I have to mention the Pizzas...great food to go with a good selection of beer, promptly served no frills, just what you need when out with a few friends.....All in all I can't wait to visit again...I wish I had a local like this one!

I go to The George & Vulture about once a week for a pizza and a glass (or two) of wine. The margarita with olives is my favourite being vegetarian and is amazingly only £6. The pub is very busy so best to get there early to get a table but it has a good atmosphere.

Have been a few times; this most recent time had the pizza and really enjoyed it: crispy and generous on toppings. Drinks aren't cheap but really no more than most of central London. Very nice decor and a friendly atmosphere!

A bright cheerful atmosphere with and good ales selection. Always full of happy locals. The sourdough pizzas are a standout with a great base and fresh ingredients. The wines available are few but appropriate for a wine drinker to enjoy a good pizza or any other food selection. A definite recommend for a relaxing and fun evening out.

Lovely Fullers pub, a lot of students use it. Massive high ceiling. Beer prices even for London a tad expensive for a sub urban site in my view. Pizza's really good. Staff non rescript with little customer interaction or up sell. That said, I liked it an would return.

Popped in here whilst passing. We only had a drink so can't comment on the food, but the place itself is lovely, staff were really friendly and we plan to go back for food next time.

Always try to book ahead if you are going to eat or drink at the George and Vulture. They dont have a massive or great selection of beers/ales but its ok. Drinks prices are pretty average London prices, perhaps closer to the more expensive side. The atmosphere is pretty standard, pub-like and nothing out of the ordinary. Its a nice 'social' place to go with your friends near Shoreditch that isnt too hipstery. The pizza's are great. They are a good size and not too expensive. They have a great selection of 'toppings' that arent your standard boring pepperoni's, Hawaiians or meat feasts. I had the goats cheese pizza and absolutely loved it!The service is OK, nothing out of the ordinary. The bar tenders look a bit glum whenever I come in here and I dont think i've ever seen them smile! But they arent rude or anything.

I am a HUGE fan of pizza - especially sourdough pizzas. And so when me and some friends were meeting up, I suggest here as I had heard of Sodo PizzaWhen we got there, it was a pub. An actual pub. But I wasn't interested in the decor, I was there for pizzaSo my friend started a tab which was a dog chain (very quirky) and we ordered our pizzasWhen they came, it was great flavours, but a regular dough and no one could tell what I was ranting an raving about. And it was a little burnt n the crustSo I looked a little silly as Im a pizza connoisseur and had heard good things about here, but it was really average at BEST

Two visits in a matter of a couple of days. Excellent food and service. For Charles Dickens fans this is a must when you visit London.

Good old fashioned hearty lunch and good beer in some great traditional surroundings. Thorough recommend it as a good London haunt.

The sourdough Sodo pizzas are some of the best in east London, so if you are in the area it's a great stop for a quick pizza.

Coming from New Zealand, Pub Food has a wholly different meaning.The George and Vulture had an amazing menu and interesting and varied specials of the day. The extensive menu is an education to a newcomer to UK pubs. There was excellent service and a great atmosphere. A great selection of ales for sure.

Confused at first by the unconnected restaurant of the same name. Pleased that we eventually got it right. This big tall traditional and corner pub is used by a lot of locals but also a lot of passing trade or folk like us spending a day near Hoxton and coming in on a recommendation. Good hospitable feel. Well kept beers and generally good fun.

Lovely light and airy pub, with big and small tables for all sizes of groups. We went on a bank holiday so it was pretty empty, but this was good for us. Starters were tasty and the pizzas were big and delicious. Food came quickly and very reasonable priced. Barman was friendly and the pizza chef brought us our food, nice touch.

Lovely traditional London pub with a warm welcome. A fine selection of very well managed Fullers ales, also some nice lagers, a well balanced wine list and a very good selection of fine malt whisky. New in 2014 are new chefs and new menu with very, very tasty sour dough pizzas - all hand thrown and hand made in the pub - quite the best pizza I have tasted in years. We brought friends from Devon here and they loved it. Wish Shoreditch Council didn't make nearby parking so expensive ......... so take the tube to nearby Old Street (5 minutes away) or take a bus, and then enjoy an extra beer or two.

This place is amazing, sourdough pizza, cured meats and lovely selection of small plates. The staff Stephen and Kane were friendly and very helpful. Defo worth a visit

A traditional London pub serving real ale and good value wine with a twist... freshly made pizza to order in addition to traditional fare. The pizzas are stunning. Long wooden tables ideal for family parties or groups. Totally child friendly. On our visit, five adults and two children shared six pizzas and including pints of London Pride all round (except the children!!) the bill was less than £70.
