We booked last minute for coronation Sunday. Although short staffed they fitted us in. We were treated to table service for everything. Even the dog had her water bowl brought to the table along with a bag of biscuits! The roast beef was wonderful and we all reckoned it the best we'd had and great value for money. The staff were very friendly and more than helpfull.

Unpretentious home cooked pub grub at a reasonable price. Plenty of choices for carnivores and vegetarians. Pies have delicious light crisp pastry with plenty of filling. This is a Freehouse. Within easy access of Ripon. Highly recommended

As 3 strangers in the village we had a very warm welcome from the friendly bar man. The restaurant area was lovely, daffodils on every table, offering a traditional menu, and our food arrived on piping hot plates! A very enjoyable visit, we would go again if we did not live in Chester, Grantham and Tynemouth!

We stopped at the George and Dragon on the way to Center Parcs at Whinfell as it was only a short detour and I am so glad we did.The member of staff who served us was so helpful and gave us a friendly and warm welcome. We sat next to the cosy warm fire and ordered from the menu which is filled with pub classics and hearty traditional food.I opted for the homemade lasagne but unfortunately they had ran out - however this meant I got to try the delicious steak and ale pie which I can honestly say was the best i've ever had! My sister-in-law opted for a pork sandwhich which was filled generously and my husband had scampi which was also very tasty. The member of staff was very accomodating to our little girl (1 year-old) and although they didn't have a designated baby change (due to the old nature of the building) ensured that we could use the ladies facilities without being distrubed where there was plenty of room for a quick nappy change. If you are ever nearby do stop in - this is a real little gem of a place and I can gurantee you will be made to feel very welcome and leave filling very full.

Called in a couple of weeks ago when looking for a pub meal near Ripon. It turned out to be a real gem. Lovely home made food. Great veggie choices. Some of the best kept beer we've had in ages and a lot of care being taken over Covid restrictions. We sat outside as the evening was just about warm enough but it's probably now too cold to sit outside now unless you've got good thermals. I'd be confident that the owners will do a good job of being Covid safe indoors, as they had put a lot of thought into it. A lovely village pub with thoughtful and friendly service.

Stopped in Melmerby last Sunday en route to the Lake District via the Yorkshire Dales and although we were supposed to be self catering we decided to try the local pub and what a great choice it was.Not only was it the best Sunday roast I have had in a very long time but the beer was exceptional and as a regular drinker for over 50 years I know one when I taste it. Both food and drink were great value for money and the locals and the landlord very friendly. It was a great start to our break - than you (though sadly the quality went downhill from there on and the costs went up but that's the Lake District i suppose)

The George and the Dragon Team (Claire, Luke, and Will) made our Wedding Anniversary very special this year when we visited their establishment last Monday. They created a romantic ambiance by welcoming us with a decorative table displaying filled glasses of Prosecco, glowing candles, “Love” themed serving pieces, and pretty flowers.Claire prepared a bespoke 3 course menu encompassing: - A Delicious Trio of appetizers: Battered Halloumi, Tempura Prawns, & BBQ Ribs - Mouth-watering Pork Chops from a local butcher, Dauphinoise potatoes and a Lovely Green Veg.- Delectable patisserie style desserts beautifully displayed on a gorgeous “tree trunk” style platter. With our anniversary celebration being confined to the local area due to the current COVID pandemic, Claire, Luke and Will organized and delivered a truly memorable Wedding Anniversary Experience that we will never forget. We express our gratitude and appreciation to The George and the Dragon Team who clearly orchestrated “Hospitality at its Best” in the new COVID climate!

Landlady Claire has don a fantastic job of making the pub both safe and welcoming after re opening post lockdown. A workable one way system is in place, plenty of hand sanitiser and pretty flags all remind visitors to social distance . There is both indoor and outdoor socially distanced seating arrangement so you can choose where you are most comfortable. This pub has always had an excellent reputation for friendly service and this continues. If you are worried about your first trip to a pub post lock down, come to the George and Dragon in Melmerby as you will receive a warm welcome in a safe and friendly environment. On this occasion we just came for a drink to see how the new rules work but will be back to dine now we have been reassured that safety systems are in place without feeling the atmosphere has been compromised. Well done to Claire and the team.

This is a cracking pub, thanks mainly to the efforts of Claire the landlady and her staff. Although The George is a country village pub, it welcomes everyone and has made itself Covid-aware ('Covid-friendly' wouldn't be the right phrase!) so much so that we were allowed to keep the pen we used to sign ourselves in! It came with a welcome message from the pub too! We didn't eat this time but enjoyed a drink in the beer garden at the front, which is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. The service was quick, came with a smile and the Estrella lager was sweet indeed! We will return!

We had the beef and horseradish and pork and apple sauce sandwiches which were gorgeous. Proper meat from a joint not cheap sandwich meat and chips. Been to this pub before and well pleased with the food, unfortunately new people have just taken over. Very pleasant landlady. Menu very basic pub grub. Ordered steak pie and lasagne. Awaiting order (which took some tiime) landlady mentioned had pubs before but never done food and that partner/chef just been trained, Steak pie at £10.50 consisted of 8 very small tough pieces of meat and an undercooked pastry lid.accompanied by soggy chips and barely cooked yellow broccoli. Lasagne had this 3/4" thick glutinous "cheese" on top with rubbery layers of pasta. Complained to landlady, she went to tell chef and we just heard a raucous laugh. We are all for people bettering themmselves but not at the expense of the customer. We were offered a 10% reduction which was accepted because we couldn't be bothered with the agro if we refused to pay. Very very poor.

Having eaten here numerous times when the former occupants were here, we were a little concerned to find that they had departed to Sowerby some five weeks previously. No need to have worried, the Sunday lunch menu was the standard fare (and therefore just a little restrictive) but the food itself could not be faulted; both pork and turkey were excellent, the latter very moist. Jam roly poly and chocolate brownie good too.Good selection of 3 cask beers, though all of fairly low ABV.Near the A1 and dog friendly in the bar area too.If you're looking for small portions piled up tottering in an oversized soup bowl this place isn't for you, if you want good quality simple cooking then it probably is.

I would like to update my earlier review of the George and Dragon. This pub has now changed hands and I can no longer recommend it as highly as I did. Sadly, the atmosphere is not the same and it did not feel like the old village pub we have been accustomed to visiting many times. The background music is now a local radio station. I do not know if this is permanent or not but we thought local village banter at the bar or silence would be more fitting in our opinion. We visited recently for a drink but did not have a meal. The menu is now basic with a very limited 'specials board' some of the choices on the board the night we visited were 'All Day Breakfast' 'Cheeseburger' 'Vegetable/Meat Lasagna' which not appeal to us. I cannot comment on the quality of the food on this visit but left with no confidence about returning to dine. It is a great shame that the previous Landlord/Landlady have now left. They will be sadly missed by us and probably by many others too. Please do not visit on the strength of my previous review dated 4th October 2015.

We regularly go for Sunday lunch here, with our two girls aged 7 and 4. The Sunday lunch is fantastic - great meat and large selection of vegetables. The kids love eating here, and are welcomed. We have been for tea on a Saturday night too and never been disappointed, wide range of meals to choose from and great portion sizes! the homemade chips are amazing!Highly recommend

I have visited here on many occasions it is a lovely pub always greeted by friendly attentive staff & the food is excellent, I have tried many different dishes from the mouthwatering Sunday Lunches to the crispy battered fish & chips always cooked to perfection. The host Tony & Debbie are always happy to help & nothing is too much trouble the friendly bar person Angi is always happy to help & is always very cheerful along with the waiting staff, The pub its self is always spotless & a lovely cosy atmosphere with roaring fires just what you need at this time of year. I would be happy to recommend this to any of my friends & family.

My wife and I went to this pub for Sunday Lunch on the 3rd January. My wife had the beef and I chose the lamb which were both really lovely, cooked perfectly and in generous supply. My wife chose sticky toffee pudding for desert and commented that it was the best she had ever tasted.... believe me when I say that she has tasted an awful lot of sticky toffee pudding!! Thanks to all the staff at the George and Dragon.

There were 11 of us plus a 9 month old. The meals were spot on as always. I had the beef medallions and the meat just melted in your mouth. There were plenty of vegetables and extra gravy for those who wanted it (and the roast potatoes were just perfect). Have dined here a few times now and always been very satisfied. Would highly recommend for Sunday lunch or Christmas menu. Thank you to all the staff. Merry Christmas

I visited for lunch on Sunday to celebrate my 70th birthday. We were a party of 12 family members, some of whom had travelled quite a distance. As is usual at this hostelry, we were not disappointed. We didn't all have the Sunday lunch menu, we had quite a variety of dishes. All our dishes were absolutely faultless. Not one complaint. Tony and Debby and their staff made us feel very welcome, as always and it all made for a very happy celebration. Thank you Tony and Debby and Angie and the nice young man who was waiting on. We will be back soon.

Really good meal here last night with two friends - one of whom prefers her steak "blue" and that was exactly how it came. My pork medallions were gorgeous and the proper home made chips were delicious. We will be back!

I took the kids and missus for something to eat after a bit of shopping. Had a look on trip advisor and decided to pay the George and Dragon a visit. I'm so glad we did. To start I had the sausage and black pudding warm salad and my wife had the garlic mushrooms. .Both were very good but we both agreed the salad was outstanding. For mains I had the pork loin and my wife had the lamb. Again both were exception with the lamb piping it. Kids were taken care of with fish fingers, chips &beans. Followed by a good helping of ice cream. . The service was great and a nice atmosphere in the pub. Beer was nice too...really good experience. Will be going back.

Popped in for the first time today intending just to have a drink and eat elsewhere at a carvery. However we were served at the bar by a very friendly lady who asked if we would like to eat. We looked at the menu and were impressed by the choices and reasonable prices. I opted for the roast beef dinner with Yorkshire pudding and veg. This came with plentiful supply of horseradish sauce and gravy served on the side in a gravy dish. There were three slices of well cooked beef and I was impressed by both the quantity of food served and the presentation. My wife opted for a cheeseburger with chips, onion rings and salad. Again large portion of well cooked tasty food. Serving staff were polite and helpful and not intrusive. Deserts were sticky toffee pudding with cream for me- delicious- and apple and caramel tart with ice cream for my wife. Again really well presented and very tasty. I would definitely eat here again and intend to visit mid week for the fish or steak nights. It's a rare thing for me to write reviews but this pub, quality food and staff stand out as worthy of high praise. Do come and eat here.

We have recently moved to a village on the outskirts of Ripon and decided to venture further afield and try some new eating and drinking establishments. We first visited the George and Dragon just for a drink and was very impressed by the friendly atmosphere of both the Landlord Tony and the locals around the bar. We met Debby the Landlady briefly as she was busy organising a local event that night. We decided to book a table and try out the Sunday lunch. The food was outstanding and of a high quality, very fresh vegetables (good choice) tender, flavoursome meat and the portions are very generous too. The food we tried was home cooked and it shows! The presentation is also very impressive with attention to detail. We believe that the Debby and Tony deliver high quality food at very reasonable prices. We now regularly visit to eat there and sometimes just call in for a drink. It is a warm, welcoming pub Debby and Tony will go the extra mile to meet any special requests. Well worth visiting this country pub. I am sure that you will not be disappointed whether you go for just a drink or a meal - Just give it a try!

A wonderful English pub exactly what you would want to find.Well kept beer, despite the fact it's a Thwaites house, and excellent no nonsense food. Very friendly locals, staff and management.Close to the A1 and dog friendly, in the bar area, too.If you're looking for small helpings piled up in oversized white bowls this place isn't for you. If you're after well prepared, straightforward home made fare then you won't be disappointed. The Thai green chicken curry was excellent.Six of us had two courses (no room for pudding) and drinks throughout the evening for £120.00.

This is a large Cafe Nero in a building that was probably previously a bank or something similar. It serves the usual Cafe Nero fare. It is a cheap alternative to Betty's Tea Rooms that is located across the road.

This store has gone so far downhill it's unreal. Visiting on a midweek evening, stock levels were very low throughout - not just fresh foods but many aisles had little on them. The number of lines also seems to have dropped dramatically, with no Schwartz herbs and spices anymore - just the Sainsbury's own brands. The building itself seems to be running into disrepair, with countless badly patched-up areas of flooring throughout the store. The worst thing though is the checkout situation. If you've foolishly decided to get a large trolley to do a proper shop, on an evening you'll be left to fend for yourself and put through your 50+ items with limited space and very little assistance. If you've bought an item with a security tag, you can be waiting up to 10 minutes for a member of staff to be free to remove it after you've paid. I used to view Sainsbury's as the best quality mainstream supermarket after the likes of Waitrose and Booths, but it's no better than Asda these days. This is the last time I do my main shop here.

We visit anchor at whixley on a Saturday for the carvery once every 4 to 6 weeks and have done so for a few years now. It,s always been unbeatable quality BUT today was terrible. The portion of Pork was small and tough and half of what was on my plate was pure tough fat. (See photo) So disappointed never had this before and may give it a miss in a few weeks spread our wings and give somewhere else a go.
