Firstly I do not like making bad reviews but this restaurant really upset my wife and IWe hold a tastecard and was visiting London so after checking many reviews optedfor Hollands wine bar. I made a reservation for 2pm for Tuesday I booked it the day before. We were visiting london but had to get the undergound to Holland park to go to this restaurant but when we arrived at 13.55pm it was closed I have like everyone had bad experiences at restaurants but to be closed was a joke and had no phone call to cancel the reservation this has to be the rudest thing ever. I do not know if people are aware about the tastecard but you pay for it, it is not free but you get discounts on certain meals so not only did we have to pay for a meal elsewhere but did not get a discount as we would have done so it cost us time and money.I telephoned the restaurant at 1pm today the day after the booking again there was no answer it appeared it was closed again so I left a message to ask why they did not honour our reservation and for them to call me back and explain.I did get Genie the manager phone me back and she said your booking is ready for today I explained the reservation was for the previous day and she then said oh was it the chef had lost the keys and could not open yesterday which was to me obviously just a weak excuse. Normally I would ask to have them reimbursement for my out of pocket costs to make this situation right but I did not bother as this is totally unacceptable My wife and I are reasonable people if they had phoned aheadand said they had to close through lack of bookings it would have given us enough time to make other arrangements but they had given this excuse and had to stick to I would definately not ever think about making another booking so if you are booking this restaurant I would strongly advise you to phone before you leave home

This is an honest review and I hope it prevents other people from wasting their time and money. We wanted an authentic Thai meal but what we got was very disappointing to say the least and the service was appalling. On entering it was empty which should have given us an indication of things to come. However, as we were hungry we stayed and ordered. The Genie Platter starter arrived half cooked and cold, there was no taste or flavour. The main dishes were of the same poor quality with no taste or flavour. The fried rice looked like a lump of rice pudding and again with no flavour or taste. In the end we returned the food half eaten. A further shock came with the bill which was almost £80 and included £5 for a bottle of water and service charge. The bill was challenged and we were very clear in explaining why we refused to pay the service charge. I have enjoyed Thai cuisine on a regular basis but the food there was not at all authentic. I hope this review prevents other people from making the same mistake.

I love Thai food. It's my favourite, well it was before visiting Genie's at Hollands last night. The owner had a horrid, unwelcoming attitude. There was only one person in there. a sure sign to run since it was 8pm. I had called earlier to ask whether i needed to book as I had a Tastecard. I was told no. When we arrived, the same lady told me that i had to book! She aquiesced. I ultimately wished she hadn't. The food was luke warm and had not just been cooked. The taste was the worst i have even had the misfortune to experience! We left most of it, even though we were very hungry. i enquired as to who the chef was and was told he was Thai. Never, ever again!

This is one of the friendliest bars in the area. When you walk in you're made to feel welcome, and if you haven't made some new friends by the end of the evening, well you simply can't have been in Genie's. ...to advise anyone considering going to this restautant not to bother. We went for a birthday meal last Saturday. I made the mistake of checking TripAdvisor for reviews beforehand. None of which were particularly glowings, so I wasn't expecting much. Which was lucky. The place was empty on a Saturday night, apart from a couple of lone dinners - never a good sign. We were ushered upstairs by the manageress (I should note that her professional nature was the only decent thing about this place) and made a start on our evening. The thai food was terrible. My 3 year old could have done better. Just really poor mass produced off the shelf stuff. Anything cooked 'fresh' was probably done so a while back and frozen down to be reheated at some future point. This place can't have enough covers to justify a decent level of fresh stock. And the drinks? For a 'wine bar' you'd expect something half decent on the list?! Yes, there were a few top end bottles of bubbly, but the rest was cheap plonk with a hefty mark up. I enjoy my wine, but having tasted several different wines from other people, I stuck to beer. No riesling or gewurtraminer on the menu either, which you might expect in a Thai restaurant in these modern times. All in all, I won't be going back. And I suggest you don't either.

Its a shame I didnt read these reviews before I went to this restaurant, as we were left feeling very disappointed. Its never a good sign when you go to a restaurant to find there is no one else dining at peak time - we were the only people there! After enquiring with the waitress as to why the restaurant was empty she assured us that it is usually very busy as the food is always so nice and fresh - which what I thought was over emphasised, and would liven up soon.We ordered a Masaman Curry and Lamb shank, then stepped outside to use the telephone and within 2 minutes the waitress came outside to ask if we were ready to eat - so much for the food being freshly cooked! The food was bearable but both of the dishes looked and tasted like they had been reheated in a microwave.I would strongly advise anyone against eating at this restaurant unless you want to settle for an expensive microwave dinner!

I made the mistake of not reading the reviews properly before going. Thought I'd give it a try as I have a Taste Discount Card and it's accepted here. Big mistake. The food was dreadful! The lady running the place, Genie, was a nice lady who was chatty and friendly. The place was a little cluttered and tatty around the edges but generally ok. Our tablecloth was a bit dirty though. Reading the menu I started regretting our decision to eat there as it was half western and half Asian, rather than the Thai food I was expecting. When we ordered, Genie wrote it down on an envelope, which seemed strange, then went off to cook it herself, which was even stranger considering we were left on our own (it was empty apart from one other table of two). For starters we ordered scallops and spring rolls. There were only four small scallops with the roe still attached in a strange sauce and three tiny spring rolls. It wasn't nice at all and left us with low expectations for the mains. We had ordered a red duck curry and mixed seafood with noodles. The duck was very rare in places with blood leaking into the sauce. It also had carrots in and wasn't very authentic. The noodles were bland and pretty sure the seafood was cooked from frozen. They didn't even taste particularly Asian bar a bit of soy sauce. The food really wasn't pleasant at all. When the bill arrived it was a bit of a shock how much it came to. Even with 50% off the food due to having the Taste Card, it worked out a quite expensive lunch. We had been charged £4 for a small bottle if water, £5 for a small beer and with 12.5% service charge added it still came to £35. Would have been close to £60 without the discount!! For that kind of money I would expect really good Thai food. What we got was one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. Avoid at all costs!

We went to this restaurant with our taste card which is 50% off food. We ordered 1 starter and the 3 of us then ordered a main and a rice each. We then asked the waitress if ice cream is included in the desserts as we got a cake each she told us yes twice that ice cream comes with it. To our surprise when the bill came it was 100 pound and 72 after discount which was shocking. My bottle of fizzy water I ordered was 5.75 and our desserts we had we was then told by a different lady did not include ice cream and was not included in the taste 50% off. We cannot believe for the hours we waited in there with the appalling service they tried to charge us 11.60 service charge. Avoid this restaurant it's a complete rip off for crap food

The waitress was very nice, the live piano was a bonus (and the completely off key singing was very entertaining) however the food was a great disappointment. I had Thai green curry with which had no flavour (definitely wasn't agree curry) and my boyfriend who also had a Thai green curry with chicken tasted exactly the same, i.e. flavourless, just his portion was half the size of mine (tiny!!). It was definitely the worst Thai meal I've ever had (and I've encountered some pretty average ones in the past). Cannot comment on the British food they serve, but if you're looking for thai food, avoid this place! We were sitting upstairs, it was not very clean (stains on all table cloths) and smelled of damp. Despite the few positives of the place (nice personnel, quirky interior), the food was a deal-breaker and I won't go back.

I loved the decor of the restaurant and the staff were friendly, but we were the only people in the restaurant on a Saturday night! The food was good, although overpriced for what it is. On Saturdays they have live entertainment and as the guy set up he burped loudly whilst we ate! He apologised, but for someone working in a restaurant this is somewhat inappropriate. All in all we will not rush back there in a hurry. Which is a shame as they could do well in the location.

Very expensive for average, greasy food. The waitress recommended us a starter dish but it was all fried, greasy stuff not worth the money - all fried from frozen (which you can buy from any freezer in any chinese supermarket. It's not fresh and its tasteless. It's a cheek to charge so much for tasteless stuff fried from frozen that probably cost no more than £2 for the whole platter! This restaurant would be great if they provided fresh, good food at a reasonable price. You can get much better food around Notting Hill Gate.Genie really needs to take a good look at the decour, which is old and looks tasteless! It can be modernised even if it is traditional. Its about creating Style. The restaurant is probably still running because of the music....definately no for its food!!

Looks nice from the outside but very dated on the inside and smells "old" - 80's decor which by the pictures of events dating back to 1995 was the last time it was updated. The menu is Anglo Asian with prices which are ridiculous for what you get; even in Notting Hill. As others have said the starters are deep fried directly from frozen catering packs. Crunchy mushrooms are just deep fried bread crumbed mushrooms with mayonnaise and a 80's cafe style salad garnish (lettuce and cucumber), much the same quality for the Camembert. Both served in a style and on plate you might expect while in an NHS hospital not a restaurant. For main we had Thai which though quite flavoursome was extremely meagre in size. Dishes were £8.95 with rice an extra at £2.95 which isn't obvious when looking at the menu outside. The most outrageous is their price for drinks a bottle of Thai beer @ £4.95 and a small coke £3.25, or a bottle of average Sauvignon Blanc at an eye watering £45.Bill took over 20 minutes to come and the place was quite quiet.Thankfully we had a Gourmet Society card and received a 50% discount on the food, but they cleverly add a 12% tip (what for I am not sure) calculated before the discount and which they wrote the discount over in biro - I guess so they thought we wouldn't see it. When we asked they said it was "normal practice" - I always thought tips were optional in the UK.A disappointing dining experience in all.Save your money and spend it in one of the far better establishments in Notting Hill or pop into one of the restaurants in WestField

My husband and I came to London for the weekend and wanted to use the taste card he had given me for Christmas. Looked up restaurants that were local to where we are staying and as we both love Thai food and the reviews were good went to genie's. We ordered the genie's special platter. Word of advice don't order it. Its deep fried rubbish. The calamari were covered in greasy batter and soggy. Certainly not fresh. Deep fried breaded mushrooms definitely from the deep freeze and in the 5 times we have been to Thailand I have never seen them on a menu!!! Skewered prawns were rubbery and overcooked. The fishcakes and satay were ok but certainly not like anything we have been served in any other Thai restaurant. We then ordered the beef massaman and jumbo prawn and king prawn red Thai curry. Consisted of one jumbo prawn cut in half and 3 king prawns for £14.95. Not a spicy curry as I had expected. The beef was tough and gristly and a very small portion. It didnt have peanuts or onions as a proper massaman should. The rice was like nothing I have ever seen in any Thai restaurant in this country or Thailand. It resembled Jamaican rice and peas in its colour. RevoltingThe waitress took nearly 15 mins to bring the bill. All in all a very very disappointing meal.

Was looking for somewhere local at a good price with a warm atmosphere. Genie's provided all of this plus more. As me and a friend arrived at the restaurant we were delighted to see a live Jazz Pianist for the customers entertainment. The starter was lovely (Shrimp in batter) and the main a yellow thai curry which was just wonderful, a rich coconut blend with a hint of spice, simply perfect :) The prices were great although booked with a taste card I would definitely pay the given price for the food was lovely. The staff was very friendly and as soon as we sat down we felt very comfortable in the small intimate dimmed out romantic antique looking restaurant :) The entertainment was wonderful and really set a romantic mood which made our night definitely one to remember :) I also sang alongside the Jazz pianist, 2 songs of my choice and 2 in which he recommended. I thoroughly enjoyed jamming with the entertainment and left with a big smile on my face and a warm feeling inside from both the food and the atmosphere. Truly a splendid night. The only bad critic I have is I was a bit disappointed with the amount of options available on the menu but as the night progressed I realised the restaurant definitely makes up for it by providing every dish spectacularly...

If you are looking for a local, family run restaurant, offering good food at a reasonable price, then this place is well worth a visit. During the week Genies can be a little quiet, which may indeed suit, but on Friday & Saturday nights it takes on a totally different personna. The highly acclaimed Jazz pianist, Ebonard Lysander plays two sets starting at around 8pm. The first is merely accompanying you whilst you eat, but the 2nd after about 10, where he is regularly joined by various singers results in the place getting very lively indeed; it is worth not leaving too early. I have visited the majority of restaurants in the Holland Park area and in my opinion this is the best overall. It is a place worth paying a visit to irrespective of whether you are a local or a visitor. The atmosphere is relaxed and extremely friendly and is truely a little gem.

Just the right atmosphere on a rainy evening -- nice and quite after a day in the crowds of the city center. Genie is the host and chief chef aided by her daughters - very welcoming. Opened for 20 years, it is an obvious favorite with the locals. Listed as Asian cuisine, but also has European selections on the menu- our Dijon Loin of Pork was very tasty and reasonablly priced by London standards. Has a jazz pianist on Friday and Saturday nights. Wish we had found this earlier!

Attempted to visit on Sunday evening, most of the tables were sticky and tv volume was at full blast. Very rough atmosphere. The two girls behind the counter had a bad attitude and didn’t know what they were doing. Asked for a bottle of Picpoul and didn’t know what it was. When I told her white wine she opened the fridge and I could see some already poured glasses, some wine inside the metal pourers in the middle of a messy fridge. It did put me off and left straightaway. They didn’t question it simply couldn’t care less.
