Tues eve at gellifawr for an evening meal. Very limited choice but thankfully neither of us are fussy. We asked why there wasn't no music on and apparently speaker wasn't working which made things very quiet and awkward. The waiter was great, isaac, no faults at all, felt sorry for him if I'm honest. He offered us drinks, no lager :/. The meal then was very disappointing. Very greasy and small portions, no flavour. Tonight's bill was 47.. Last night's at a nearby pub was 26... No comparison. Last night's was 10x better. Very disapointed. 3/10

Amazing food, I don't think we have any photos as it wasn't on the plates long enough! The night before the wedding our family and friends enjoyed the burger and chips, Katsu Chicken Curry and pork noodles. They were amazing. The wedding say we had chicken in white wine sauce and the potatoes that came with omg! Lemon cheesecake for desert was lush. A friend had the vegetarian option and cleared her plate, therw were plenty of fussy eaters, the restaurant was more than accommodating and not 1 complaint.

I stayed two nights and thoroughly enjoyed the food My first dinner started with smoked salmon and local crab starter served with warm buttered toast beautifully presented sizeable portion and delicious, followed by Welsh lamb rump served with bubble and squeak potato and a beautiful gravy , perfectly cooked pink and again a good serving .washed down with a glass of good Merlot , followed by a decadent desert of Eton mess , naughty but nice ! Second night I choose ham hock terrine with pickled veg side and toast , good firm terrine and amazing pickled veg, followed by poached salmon served on a bed of sliced potatoes with brown shrimp sprinkled over the whole dish , the salmon was fresh and moist and great taste , washed down with a glass of Sauvignon blanc , the previous evening the chef , who chatted after service , told me he was making chocolate brownies for this evening , so I felt obliged to partake , two smallish slices accompanied by vanilla ice cream and a raspberry coulis looked and tasted so good ! This chef knows his stuff and has a very relaxed friendly manner . The timings for serving were spot on , a faultless two dinners Thank you .

Back in the area and we could not miss Gellifawr for Sunday lunch. Especially as our daughter was with us and demanded her favourite. Once again had a superb lunch with good service. We were in the small restaurant this time which is cosy and very comfortable, possibly nicer than the main room but that is no complaint. The meat was delicious and tasted as if it had just been cooked, nice thick slices too. Thanks Simon we will be back again no doubt about it.

We tried the restaurant on the first night of our stay, and very pleased we did, the steak was excellent and although a steak knife was provided it was not needed as it was so tender. The waiter was also extremely polite and helpful throughout making it a most enjoyable evening.

Another family favourite but when I booked the table I was told that the carvery was not being run but the roasts would be plated. Perfect, no queuing! We were treated to an excellent lunch with beautiful vegetables with a wide variety and beef which was superb. Always a treat to come for a lunch to Gellifawr and so pleased we came last Sunday. I was surprised that for once the restaurant did not appear too busy, again perfect for us but the restaurant deserves more attention - just keep a table for us:-)

We had an evening meal whilst we were staying at the hotel, and the food was very good. We didn't have a starter but I had a main meal of seared salmon and my husband had the duck. Both were cooked and presented very well and the sevice was excellent. We both had a dessert of a lemon posset, which was a large portion and quite rich, but we finished it! Lovely restaurant to visit for meal and the hotel has a good bar with new seating and plenty of space to sit outside to admire the views if the weather is fine.

After arriving at the hotel, I was in two minds whether to eat in the restaurant – even though I have eaten there before and the food has always been good. After looking at the menu I decided that there was not anything there that immediately jumped out at me. Luckily for me the Chef appeared and basically asked me what I fancied and when I told him he went off and cooked it – and to a very high standard and at a very competitive price – now that is service for you! I doubt that this would be possible in the more busy months ;-)

All the staff were so helpful and made us feel very welcome. We had a wonderful time which was topped off with the best Sunday lunch ever. The starter of homemade soup was delightful followed by the most amazing roast dinner with all the trimmings. Huge compliments to the chef and can't wait to return

We dined here all week for evening meals and breakfast. The beef stroganoff was awesome. The Coq Au Vin was possibly the best I've had, the chef has his own secret recipe sauce which is delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection with freshly made peppercorn sauce. The haddock fillet in crispy batter with seasoned hand cooked chips was also good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant 😋

My partner and I, having paid £40 per head and pre-booked our food from a very limited 3 course menu, we didn't expect much could go wrong. Although the room and tables were nicely decorated, there was very little atmosphere and no welcoming drink on arrival as you would expect on Christmas Day. The soup, whilst tasty, was only luke-warm but the biggest disappointment was our main course of a traditional turkey dinner. It was served plated up on small dinner plates with two large roast potatoes, parsnips and a few other trimmings (there was one very small "pigs-in-blanket" and I think there was some stuffing although not easy to find). The turkey was mostly small pieces of dark meat, the only piece of breast on my plate was very small and was dry and hard. We called the waiter who after visiting the kitchen informed us that there was no turkey left and could only offer us a complementary glass of wine in compensation. The tureen of vegetables was very ordinary consisting of sprouts, carrots and cabbage. The desert was also very ordinary with the Christmas Pudding served in strange meatball shapes. There were no extras such as mince pies or petit fours served with the coffee. We were only in the restaurant approximately 45 mins and left feeling very disappointed and cheated. I was so upset that I immediately emailed the manager with my complaints as I don't usually go on Trip Adviser. I got a reply full of apologies and an offer to send us some vouchers for Gellifawr or their sister hotel the Emlyn Arms as further compensation. That was three weeks ago and there is still no sign of any vouchers, hence my entry on Trip Adviser. I believe this whole episode is down to poor management and, although we live locally, it is unlikely we will eat at either of these establishments again.

We had booked a table for 7 people having previously been here before in the past for xmas day lunch under different management at the time. I can say that we were truly left feeling disappointed with the lack of effort that had been put into the whole time we were guests there this time. As we arrived it was just like any other normal day very basic with no complimentary buck fizz on arrival. As u would expect being xmas day no effort at all been put in to the xmas day dinner menu. The starters were ok, but the main was very basic had to ask for Yorkshire puds as the chef had forgot to put them out! With the beef dinners No mash potato and a very basic small selection of veg. the pudding had no effort of presentation been put in to it. My partners ice cream was melted mush! And the xmas pudding with homemade brandy sauce arrived in a sauce that looked curdled and not a pretty sight! the xmas pud was in a meatball like form shape that was very odd. No mince pies offered with tea & coffe at the end felt very no frills. Very disappointing as we've had a lot better elsewhere on xmas day. Overall it was a shame that they didn't go out of they're way to make our family day a special day. It wasn't the staff's fault just badly organised.

Have been coming to Gellifawr for lunches / dinner and staying in the hotel for years. Over the years it has changed, as have the owners, but the food has remained consistently good. The carvery today was first class with beautifully cooked selection of meats and lots of fresh vegetables to chose from. The service was good with lots of staff to look after everyone, for understandably, the restaurant was busy but it was buzzing with life. More than happy to recommend a visit to the hotel and restaurant for it is obviously still thriving and long may it continue to!

I have stayed several times at Gellifawr but this time was special as we booked the whole hotel and all cottages for the wedding of my daughter and stayed three nights with most guests staying two nights. This is an ideal venue for a wedding of around 100 + guests as there is accommodation for 70 or so in the hotel and cottages and plenty of other accommodation nearby in Newport and district. We had a barbecue for all guests on the Friday before the wedding and this broke the ice for a real party and allowed bride and groom to meet most of the guests before the big day. The barbecue food was superb and the event was weather proof as we had all the food served indoors buffet style. The wedding with over 100 guests went perfectly and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The Chef is superb and will get you anything you want from sandwiches to a full roast lamb and the quality of the food and presentation is first class. I cannot compliment the staff and venue enough and will certainly be back for a weekend escape in the lovely welsh hills overlooking Newport.

Second meal was slightly better, had the Chowder again which was excellent and then Lamb which was disappointing, asked for veg to be kept separate this time. Considering my expectations, which were raised by the excellent Chowder this was not a memorable meal.

We are visiting our daughter in the region and, as a special treat, she booked this restaurant for Saturday evening. The location is wonderful, in the middle of the national park, but it means a long and meandering drive so it needs to be good. Whether it was because they had a wedding reception from 3 pm but it was a big let down. The menu was very limited, steak or curry or pasta or fish and chips, which was hardly challenging. The wine list was also poor but there was a note that they were in the process of changing supplier. We ordered a nice bottle of kiwi sauvignon blanc which arrived unopened leaving us to do serve ourselves. When the cod did arrive it was the smallest that I have ever seen, about the size of a single sea bass fillet! The creme brulee unfortunately forgot to have a hard caramel top which slightly defeats the object and the assortment of biscuits with the cheese platter were extremely poor. The food was not inedible, just very average. I did comment about the above and the deserts were not charged which was something.

The food was excellent, can not find fault with anything. The staff were very helpfull and plenty of room in the room, as some places can overpack the tables. We went for the Sunday carvery. To start we had cod coujouns (beautifull and steaming hot) the main was the carvery. On offer was beef(a little too red for our liking) but went for the pork and turkey which was very delicous with plenty of veg and steaming hot gravy. Our desert was summer pudding and the crumble. Beautifull. We will be back as we dot live far away. The price very reasonable. Diolch yn fawr Gellifawr, mi fyddwn 'nol cyn bo hir.

The food was great - rib eye for mains which melted in the mouth and crème brulee for afters. However the tables are really small and noticed that another diner had to put his water jug on the floor. Had breakfast both mornings of our stay. Both days the restaurant was heavily understaffed and the waitresses took far too long to respond to any requests. These were for simple things like milk/sugar/ketchup/toast/butter. The beans, scrambled egg and fried potatoes on the second morning were cold. There was no milk in the jug next to the self serve cereal bar. Not the kind of service I expect when paying £110 a night for a room.

Crikey - what happened here??? Where did the chef go who used to be here?? It's awful. Once upon a time it used to be heaving and you would have to wait for a table as even the locals would come to eat. Ok - alarm bells did ring when there was only one table set!!! Clearly they weren't expecting anyone to walk in either. The menu is no longer a selection of in season game, fresh fish or anything else. It's like a little english attempt at trying to cook Italian and it is not good. When the waitress bought our food, she had no idea what anything was....so instead of learning the menu (you know the usual basic training), she came out and said "fish"..... when asked if it was the cod order.....urm yeah, it's fish. You get the idea. Don't order the seafood!! My pasta came.....pasta fine......sauce thick and stuck to the bottom of the dish.....prawns, well overcooked rubbery and hard......mushrooms, cold and raw.......mussels, oh dear.....kind of pulverised.....bits of crumbled overcooked mash that tasted slightly like a mussel - all of them. Anyway, after a couple of attempts the waitress came over and asked if everything was ok. Explained the above (politely) and she said she would take it away for me. Which she did! I didn't get offered anything else though!! Eventually managed to order the salmon & pasta, ate a bit as I was starving, but it wasn't nice at all. Oh and miss out the cardboard covered in yellow grease!! Oh sorry.....I meant to say garlic bread??? Apparently that's what it was. Needless to say - it was out with the Rennies!!

No one likes to feel forced to eat at the hotel but there is nowhere else within reach and driving around these roads at night is best done fully sober. In the event, the restaurant itself was more than acceptable - an Italian meal with lots of nice touches by the chef, including home baked bread and vegetables that could not have been more perfectly al dente. With a bottle of reasonable wine, the overall price for 2 came to about £45. The decor was fresh and neutral, modern rather than chic.On Friday night there were only 3 tables occupied (another couple and a family) but the waitress seemed to be constantly busy and I hope they lay on more staff if it gets really busy!

There are more reviews of Gelli Fawr in the accommodation section and this really would be a lovely place to stay; it's in a fantastic spot, with lots of good walks from the hotel. However, we just went for lunch. There are lots of places in lovely settings in this area, but Sunday lunch can be grim (pre-sliced Makro meat, gloopy pretend gravy, frozen veg, glutinous apple sauce, soggy grey roast protatoes). At £13.95 for 3 courses, Gelli Fawr is not much more expensive than some of these places, but the food is in a different class. Definitely nothing from Makro. Duck terrine starter with chutney and salad was all obviously 'home' made. Prawn salad was made from decent prawns with taste and texture. Bread rolls tasted freshly baked. The roast beef was outstanding and came with real gravy. Baked cod with caper and lemon sauce was lovely and perfectly cooked. Interesting, fresh veg. Roast potatoes were the only disappointment - not grey and soggy, but not crispy either.Desserts were lovely. An excellent almond and raspberry tart with high quality vanilla ice cream and a strawberry pavlova that actually tasted of strawberries.3 choices of starter,4 mains, 3 puds + variety of home-made ice cream. Portions are very generous. Friendly and efficient service. Attractive decor. Why on earth wasn't it full?
