Average cafe but over £12 for a regular cappuccino and regular hot chocolate and two cookies seems expensive.

Because the Geffrye Museum is so outstanding, you'd expect the cafe to be of the same standard. Sadly no as even a short strip for a warming tea/coffee on a chilly November day was an exercise in frustration as the staff seemed uninterested in providing timely or friendly service.

Well, it's a nice place situated in one of the most interesting museums in London - but the service really is incredibly slow. The prices are a bit high as well, and the seats aren't too comfortable; the café simply benefits from being literally right in the middle of things: in between the exhibits from earlier centuries and the ones from the 20th century... They COULD try a little more!

Went here with my partner for some lunch in a good mood and actually left feeling sad. All the staff looked miserable. We were told to sit down and we’d be served but the waitresses kept clearing other tables even though so customers were waiting to be seated. I even saw the manager pointing at us to tell the waitress to take out order. My partner went up and asked if we could order and he said yes they’ll come to the table and so we waited again and the waitresses cleared more tables and literally sauntered around with absolutely no urgency. Eventually we ordered and the waitress was passably friendly. Food was really nice but when we went to to pay the man taking the payment was practically scowling. Waited for a smile or an acknowledgement that I was a person to no avail. Totally clueless as to how to run a cafe. Avoid!!!!

The cafe is currently situated in the midway area of room exhibits in the museum. The staff are welcoming and there is a choice of cakes and pastries and light cooked food. It is table service and there is a choice of seating in a light and airy space. It will be interesting to revisit when relocation has taken place after the upcoming major refurbishment of the museum

went recently with a group of friends, pre-booked a table for lunch, which was just as well. The Café was busy. The Staff were friendly and efficient, the food was lovely fresh produce and 'homemade' (which is not often the case). The museum is closing for refurbishment in 2018. I hope the food stays the same.

We had lunch and an afternoon cuppa and cake here recently. On the positive side, the surroundings are pleasant and I enjoyed my soup of the day. Waiting staff were pleasant. The prices are reasonable for London and the museum is free so all good to this point. I returned for a cup of tea and a piece of cake mid afternoon - the cafe was quieter but there seemed to be no system to the service. We ordered tea and cake - the cake was brought quickly but the tea did not arrive and eventually I chased it up - it came but the order was wrong. A shame because this could be a good place.

Had lunch with a friend at the cafe. Made most welcome by a female waitress, who took our order. Food arrived quite quickly, but delivered by possibly the most dismissive and rude waiter I have encountered for quite some time. Request for coffee was barely acknowledged, the initial bill for food was snapped up and the updated version stuffed in a cup without any comment but a nice blank stare. Request for a coffee for my friend was taken by another member of the waiting team who seemed to have lost the power of speech. The coffee and desert didn't arrive after 15 minutes, and we were told curtly by him that it would arrive 'soon' - 25 minutes later, we gave up and left. Would look elsewhere to eat next time I visit - plenty of other places in Hoxton.

Our visit was completely spoilt with the service and food in the restaurant. The meal was laughable- after a 25 minute wait, the food finally arrived. ( which consisted of an hors d'oeuvre size quiche, 2 boiled potatoes & a bunch of lettuce leaves - all for £12.50). To add insult to injury, only one of us was served with the other meal having been forgotten. We continued to wait, only to be told that there wasn't anymore quiche available. Everything seemed to be disorganised and the staff totally bewildered as to how to resolve the problems. Eat somewhere else, it will save you the stress.

We stopped here for a snack on a visit to the museum. We liked the space and the view out to the beautiful gardens. We ordered a bacon sandwich, which came on good bread with quality, thick bacon. The chocolate brownie seemed homemade and was good and squidgy. The tea came in a generous pot and was nice and strong. The coffee was good. There were jugs of water available which we really appreciated on a hot day. The service was very pleasant but a little forgetful. Overall we really enjoyed the cafe and will be happy to go again on our next visit to the museum.

This cafe was quite a find in the Geoffrey Museum. It is light and airy and overlooks the period gardens. The day I visited was warm and cloudy but this didn't detract from the ambiance, which was light and airy. Service was very good, I wanted a variation from the set menu, which the chef was only too pleased to be able to accommodate. The homemade lemonade was like taking a step back in time - just like mum used to make. The food is reasonably priced and was delicious to eat.

Having tried the cafes at almost all the museums, galleries, and attractions in London this one stands head and shoulders above the rest, though admittedly my opinion is only based on the soup, coffee, and tea. For one thing, you get friendly table service in a restaurant with a view over the garden and plenty of space. The menu offers an excellent choice, from sandwiches, soup, and cakes to more substantial hot meals. My soup was one of the best I've tasted, accompanied by very fresh, brown, locally baked bread. They pride themselves on using local suppliers for this and many other items. Unlike most of the others, it looks as if they run it themselves rather than leaving it to outside caterers.

The food is prepared on site and is superb. Drinks are often from local - Hackney - suppliers. Last time I had an incredibly tasty chilli butternut squash soup (arrived piping hot) with cheese scone. (I wish I had taken a photo as you could tell it was going to be tasty - it looked homemade.) Service is a little amateur - the bill is often wrong and it can take a while for the right thing to arrive - but I put up with it given the tasty food. A bit of staff training and change of outlook at it would easily deserve five stars.

When the server arrived with the order he didn’t know the difference between the various drinks and had to go back and ask, by the time he returned half the drinks were luke warm, By then we had been waiting so long we drunk up, paid and left. Mostly, even with reviews, I’m of the old fashioned opinion that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.But in this case I really do have to write something. My experience was so odd. That is really the only word for it. And although it wasn’t ALL the fault of the people working here they certainly were the major contributors.I was in the area for a meeting and, although there are plenty of restaurants in the area, I didn’t have much time and decided to go here because I thought it would be quick. The greeter handed me a menu and told me to sit anywhere. The place was about 70% full but there was only one small table free. It was still cluttered with the detritus of the last customers but I decided to sit there anyway because I thought it would be inconsiderate to sit alone at a four or six person table. This was, I presume, my first mistake. The staff ignored me. They cleaned off all the other empty tables but simply did not bother with mine.So after about 20 minutes, when the place had emptied out more, I went and sat at another already cleared table.I was quickly attended to. I asked the waiter why they hadn’t bothered with me before. He looked down at my empty table and told me it was because I didn’t have a menu. Well... I thought to myself, did have one at the other table, when you didn’t come over. But I didn’t argue the point with him. I just ordered my lunch. As I was waiting and tapping away on my laptop, a lady approached my table and asked if she could join me. She explained that she was waiting for some people and didn’t want to miss them. By this time time there were plenty of other free tables available but I was too much of a gentleman to object. Even though she was in a cloud of perfume, coughing and mumbling to herself, I thought it would be too rude of me to get up and go to another table.I suppose it may have been slightly rude of me not to chat to her but, I was very focussed on my meeting and had plenty to think about. When she got her food, she complained that it was cold and asked if it could be put back in a microwave, but her waitress didn’t do anything about it. After which we both ate our lunch in relative silence. When I got my bill I discovered that they had included two desserts which I did not have. I pointed this out at the till and the person there told me it was because I was sharing my table and that was what the lady had ordered. He said I would not be charged for that part.Except that I told him that it wasn’t what she’d ordered at all - I’d been sitting next to her when she ordered and even if I hadn’t heard her, I’d seen that she wasn’t eating two desserts. After which he told me that this is what she had ordered “next”. But exactly how did he know this? As I say, I heard EXACTLY what she ordered. I also heard her complaining to the waitress about it. How could I not, I was right next to her on a small table. I thought the bloke on the till was just making all this up to cover for the fact that they’d tried to charge me for food I hadn’t ordered. What a shame. This restaurant is in a beautiful spot attached to a very interesting museum. The food itself is nice enough. The building is of a unique design, well lit and overlooking an attractive garden and conveniently right next to Hoxton railway station. But there is something very odd going on with the staff here.Exactly what, I have no idea and since I will not be going back, it will forever remain a mystery.

Having had a thoroughly enjoyable morning with the kids in the Museum itself I was in no mind to spoil things by arguing with the cafe staff, but I can't let my first (perhaps only) visit to the cafe go without comment. Firstly takeaway hot drinks are forbidden, understandable given the nature of the Museum, but parents wanting a beverage have to sit down with their children in the cafe. Which leads to the second problem, if parents pack their children's lunch (and there are myriad reasons for this, not just cost) they cannot eat it in the cafe even if the parent is having a meal. Again, I understand the management's reasoning which is why I asked first, but the rude response of the staff left me in no doubt of their position. So I trudged off to find somewhere the kids could discretely eat their lunch (unlike the nearby Museum of Childhood there is no separate 'picnic' area, plus it was unseasonably cold to eat outside) after which I went back to the cafe for my long awaited coffee and cake treat. And look, on their website there is an offer ' ..any hot drink and cake for £5!'. When I asked the server I got a blunt 'we've stopped doing that' and when I showed him the offer (marked 'new!') and he snapped 'if you're going to cause a problem you can have it for £5'. Nevertheless after a 10 minute wait and a frankly dry cake and weak coffee I was still given a bill for £6.25 which I left on the table not wanting to wait any longer. So, save your money for your donation to the upkeep of the Museum (I would like to think they got a share of my overpriced afternoon tea, but the reality is the Museum probably sees little of the Café's profits) and have a picnic in the gardens if the weather allows.

A friend and I visited the Geffrye Museum yesterday to attend the Crafty Fox Market but before browsing the crafts we decided to settle down to some lunch at the museum cafe. The man who appeared to be running the cafe took our order within minutes but 30 minutes later we still hadn't even been brought drinks. We got the man's attention and reminded him of our order (which he has completely forgotten) and he went to the till and appeared to put our order through at last. Our drinks then arrived but no food emerged. Another 30 minutes later we reminded the man again and he went to 'check' on our food order. It finally arrived an hour and a quarter after we had sat down, no apologies were given at any point and the lateness was blamed on the time it took to make toast!! We were outraged and expressed our sentiments at which point the man made more excuses about the busyness of the cafe (people who sat down a few minutes before had been served) and again made a big deal about the fact that my friend's dish had to be 'warmed' (she assured me it was barely warm anyway). We were also shouted at rudely and told the only thing he could do was give us free cake and then walked off! Considering the unpleasantness made us not even want to eat our lunch, we declined the cake. When we ate our meals, they were not as described on the menu and missing basic elements as well as having very little flavour. Not worth the wait, the money or the mortifying customer service. Our server eventually guiltily offered us 50% discount off the food (so the previous offer of just cake was a lie) and even dared to ask how the food was when we did begrudgingly pay.Ruined what was otherwise a splendid craft market. We felt demoralised. This cafe is clearly letting the museum down. A real shame.

The Geffryer Museum itself is well worth a visit, small, approachable and interesting, and in a beautiful building. The staff are young, enthusiastic and always freindly - a very nice atmosphere. The cafe, too, is very attractive. But, the food is very ordinary and small portions are just taking the mickey, especially given the high prices. I had the tortilla, ok but nothing special, and the tortilla itself was smaller than a cigarette packet and accompanied only by a few leaves of green salad. At around £7, a rip-off. My wife had the fish rarebit, two small slices of bloomer with mashed fish and some cheese - similarly mean-minded and not a rarebit at all. Even the all-day breakfast at £8 manages to be much smaller than you imagine. Honestly, if you're at all hungry, eat before you go and save some money too.

My partner had the bacon sandwich on soft, fresh, homemade, granular bread, a snip at £4.75. I had a good glass of Merlot £5.75 for 175ml and tap water was freely available in carafes. Visited on a busy Sunday afternoon. Table service only so I waited for a table to be vacated. When two tables became available I was still not called forward by one of the waiting staff neither was I or other customers acknowledged while we waited in the queue and brushed by. When I was finally allocated a seat no apology was given for the length of time that I had to wait nor was I given a menu. I was placed by a table where a family sat whose baby constantly screamed and banged on the table with the parents making know attempt to stop the unnecessary noise. Food is cooked to order and I opted for the East End breakfast. Although my meal was full of flavour and cooked to order the portion took up the centre of the plate and I was still hungry after I had finished. It weighed in at £7.50, hence I expected a bigger portion for this non proletarian sum. My latte costing £2.65 was nothing more than a runny milky coffee. We three members of staff run off their feet, as fourth staff member was necessary to manage the queue and to greet customers. However, all members of staff were polite at all times. Toilets are located nearby and are lift accessible. If you do not mind being ignored on arrival by staff, anti-social behaviour by other customers through their lack of supervising of their children and prefer small portions of food, then this café is for you. As for me, I'll probably visit one of the surrounding Vietnamese restaurants that offer better value for money.

I was to meet a friend at the Geffrye Museum. I arrived early and had noticed on the website that they served two kinds of afternoon tea. I was coming in from Bath and was looking forward to a nice afternoon tea. When I arrived at the café, I was rather rudely told that that information was old and that they did not serve afternoon tea. I expressed my disappointment and suggested that they need to update their website. ( I have just checked on Jan. 27 and afternoon tea is still listed on the cakes menu on their website.) I told the man in the café that my friend would be arriving soon and that we might be back. Indeed my friend had not had lunch so we returned and she ordered a sandwich. I ordered a scone and a pot of tea. I do not know about the quality of the sandwich, it looked good. However, my scone was so dry, I think it was at least two days old! Also, the person serving us seemed to be irritated to be waiting on us. This is all very unfortunate as the setting of the café is very nice and we thoroughly enjoyed the museum. However, the service and quality of food at the café left much to be desired.
