We arrived here just after the kitchen had closed, but they very kindly made us some sandwiches; these came with salad and were very good. The young lady who took the order was very pleasant and friendly, as was the lady in the gift shop next door; they all seem to multi-task and have a positive attitude to visitors (by no means the case everywhere!) The café is housed in a dramatic stone building which is in keeping with the environment. Seating is on two levels. I imagine it could get crowded when coach parties are in?

A welcome cup of tea & coffee during a visit to the village. Lovely seemingly homemade cakes were very tasty! Friendly staff, & no disposable plastic…good to see they’re doing their bit!

As part of our coach tour we visited this attraction and my wife and I decided to have lunch in the cafe. We were not disappointed, staff were friendly and the sandwiches were well presented and tasty as was the home baking. reasonably priced given a captive audience. Worth a visit.

We arrived just expecting the usual cafe serving coffee and cakes but actually they had a variety of meals which are only served during lunch hours. Need to check ahead what they are if wanting to eat here. Almost everyone who visited the site seemed to pop in for something to eat or drink so might have to queue. Might be easier to do the visit and then eat. You get all the coach trips stopping here so can seem crowded although the tables were spaced out.

Mairi's homemade scones and the hot tea served up with laughter and smiles the cold, rainy day we visited were so welcome ! The care taken to keep Gearrannan in modern working order as well as the Art Gallery next door were a thankful reprieve from the elements, and it was _so nice_ to be welcome at a visitor site and not met with distain and suspicion. Mòran taing staff!

The cafe is small but well run and the seating is good. If you are lucky enough to be there during the herring season then do have the herrings in oatmeal. It is simple and delicious. We enjoyed our lunch and would recommend the cafe as a place to have a break. The fruit cake is particularly good. The staff are great. We had a chat with the chef who is in and out of the kitchen keeping an eye on things. Very friendly.

Arrived on a Saturday expecting to have lunch here - only to find the restaurant recently closed down for the winter. Have advised the management to advertise the fact. Previous experiences were good, nice food in an authentic blackhouse setting.

This is a small place but the menu was more than I was expecting with some real Scottish gems; herring fried in oatmeal for example, that would have been a “Scottish experience”. Pleasant and helpful serving staff and plenty of smiling - always a good thing! I had their own cured salmon which was excellent and hubby some Stornoway Black pudding - all made to order with nothing prepackaged ready to go - an excellent service. We managed to sit outside on one of the robust wooden picnic tables and that was perfect as it was sunny and we had our dog with us. The car park was full to overflowing and there were three bus tours in site but it all seemed to work well. Well worth visiting while you are at the black houses.

After seeing a lot of very good reviews we were looking forward to a bite of lunch here. Parking slightly limited by the small car park and must be difficult at height of tourist season. The cafe is small with space for about 30 covers. It is table service so find yourself a table, we found one for 4 and sat down - table still to be cleared . One menu between 4 - once finished with it the next table had to borrow it as they didn’t have one at all. Menu fairly basic but with a selection of local produce included. Ordered food and drinks and table was cleared then of plates and empty cans but it would maybe have been nice to have wiped the table of the leftover crumbs from previous diners. Food arrived promptly though got the drinks and scones first before the sandwiches. Sandwiches freshly made and mostly tasty though the cheese was a bit “plastic”. Pot of tea for 1 turned out to be just a cup. Prices fairly average. Possibly we were at a busy time but it shouldn’t stop basic tasks like cleaning tables being done.

This is a fairly small cafe which only has a limited range of lunches and baked goods. But it is very nice and very good quality. I had fried herring in breadcrumbs, which was very emotional for me as I have not had it for many years since my mother made it when I was a child.

The only drawback is the size of the cafe or is it just too popular? Fresh well cooked food is the key ingredient and the service was great - even got a lesson in Gaelic.

After walking round the village and visiting the museum it was a unique experience to have a coffee in the small on site cafe in one of the blackhouses. It gave you a better feel what it must have been like to live in one of these buildings. Coffee was good and I can recommend the home made shortbread too

Popped into this cafe for some light lunch after visiting the Blackhouses. I had the lentil soup and it was very comforting. It came with a slice of delicious soda bread. Service was good, if a little on slow side, but I put that down to preparation of the fresh food.

Popped in for an afternoon snack after visiting the Village (in the rain) and the soup was jut what was needed to warm things up. The tea, cakes and pastries also looked impressive, but we didn't try them. A couple at a table near us ordered two of the haggis, tatties and neeps plates, and finished every bit, so that must have been tasty too. Prices were average.

Do not expect high level food, but you can expect honest coffee, a scone, and good value. When we arrived at the Village, 2 coaches arrived as well, and we found a cosy place to hide from the elbow business...

Went to order the smoked haddock breakfast and was told it was off menu, as. we were staying there a few days I asked when it would be back on and was told it wouldn't. We then went for lunch and I ordered the herring which was also off menu, mackerel then ? off also. In the end I settled for the chicken broth when really I should have voted with my feet, only to find that the chicken broth can never of seen even a chicken stock cube as it tasted only of carrots and barley. Also, despite having space to facilitate approximately 25 guests, there was only one menu to share ???? You are surrounded by the sea and would like to eat fish, how difficult can it be - really difficult apparently.

There aren’t many cafes in the area so it was good to find one at the interesting Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. As it’s in one of the former blackhouses, it’s a bit dark, but is pleasantly furnished. The snack lunch we had was fine and service was helpful and efficient.

We visited today for some lunch. The food menu was varied and reasonably priced. The drinks cabinet had only a small selection but we all found something we wanted. The staff member on the till was lovely. There was quite a wait on food but I felt it was worth it as everything was lovely and hot and as far as I could tell it was made to order. We are deducting one star for cutlery not being readily available (it was busy so it was understandable)

Stunning view and friendly, efficient staff in a small family-run hotel. The quality of food was excellent, but fully grown humans may wish to order two main courses each, such was the rather miserly amount of actual food - scallops and monkfish respective.y - on our plates. Top marks for presentation and taste, but would have loved a little more.

We ate twice at Scarista House Restaurant during our recent trip to Harris. We have dined here before on previous visits over the last 20 years and this year it was better than ever. Beautifully prepared local food. First menu - Twice baked cheese soufflé, followed by Stornoway landed hake in a delicious sauce and some delicious vegetables. and then a chocolate roulade!. Second menu - goats cheese, courgette and cheese raviol with a nettle pesto (amazing!) followed by local hand dived scallops and the most delicious lemon tart with excellent pastry, lemon verbena ice cream and a strawberry and pink peppercorn coulis. Fabulous! Highly recommend the cooking here! An absolute delight!
